works great but boy does it get hot. thats what you get with 10 pounds of shit im a 5 pound bag
What duplexer did you use ? How many watts out are you getting? And what is the swr reading between repeater and antenna ? Please
It’s mostly likely about 3.5 watts with a duplex
Sweet job!
Thank you

Nice video. Like see more of you operating SDR device you built for older and not so old radios without the waterfall.
I can show it on a 718. Probably the only One I can show without a scope on the radio
A very misleading click bait title.
Yeah. Explain yourself?
Very good video, I am going to connect my Yaesu FT-891 to my SDRPlay, just ordered CAT control cable today for the FT-891. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Just make sure you use something on the antenna line or you will burn out the front end of the sdr when you transmit. Ask me how I know lol. Good luck let me know how it goes
@@SlowGoose Yes sir, I have the switch box you linked in your description. Everything is ready, just waiting on the cable. BTW - I like your concept of the DIY switch box, was it difficult to build? I do electronic repairs and am intrigued by your box. Keep up the good work, I subbed and look forward to your videos.
@@deankq4adj125thank you. All the box is is a rf tap and a relay that interrupts and grounds the sdr coax. I’ll make a video on the box but it’s not pretty yet.
@@SlowGoose That sounds great, I'm looking forward to that video.
really cool project!
Thank you. Makes a world of difference. In the shack and portable
I thought you were going to transmit from inside. lol ✌✌
Maybe next time. Most of the buildings are in pretty bad shape. And getting an antenna up might be tough.
@@SlowGoose Rodger that. We'll give you a pass this time. lol ✌✌
That's awesome. I'm hoping to do some remote "Catch and Release" events which is really no different than the POTA only 11 meter. Great video. ✌✌
I still use 11 meters. Check out some of my other videos on some of the custom ones I’ve built. Stuff like this is what got me into ham. Tons of different avenues to go down and throw fistfuls of money at. Usually at least one band is open.
@@SlowGoose I'm thinking I'm going to at least get my Tech license be cause my Dad is ham, has been since late forty's early fifty's and I would like to get his call as a Legacy Call. I've seen your Washington line up. Very impressive for sure. ✌✌
@@udx-483muddbucket5 Thats what got me into ham, my father wass pushing me for years to do it and I was plenty happy on 11M. Once i finally broke down and did it I couldnt belive i waited that long. Took my general 2 or 3 months after and once I saw all the dx there was out there I was hooked. good luck studying and hopefully you get your ticket and I can talk to you from one of the parks!

I have Both of these SDR Play United!
The sdr play models are some of the best I’ve used so far.
This is a confusing and somewhat annoying video. Just get to the point and show how to hook this stuff up.
A more comprehensive video is in the works. I’m not thrilled with all the movement in this video myself.
Heckle Fish for the win!!!
YAHTZEE !!!
Why two 40m hamsticks? Do you use them together and phase them or something to get some gain out of it?
Got it. The hamsticks are set up as a dipole with the bracket.
It works as a dipole. One side is a radiating element and the other is counterpoise.
I like that pelican case. I have one about the same size but without the wheels and handle. My settup can't quite fit into the case because I use a Bluetti EB70S "solar generator" to power everything and it doesn't fit in the case. I also use an ft-991a and have an EFHW but tend to use my mobile top loaded hustler vertical (with resonators) because throwing an antenna in a tree is controversial and sometimes prohibited.
That’s the issue I was having with the end fed that led me to build this trailer hitch contraption. It works well and no one can tell you you can’t have it on your vehicle.
9 watt 5vdc panel? @ what current ? Baofeng pair will need 1.8 amps xmit, but I'm not sure these have bms on the extended batpack. I purchased the alkaline/low to mid grade nimetalhydride AA. Charge rate 850ma to 1.2 amp each, depending on workload. Picking up the components to build or buy one outright, 2.5 amp regulated charge controller.
I’ve never had it out long enough where I’ve had to use the solar panel. But it is not enough current.
Does this work with Quansheng also :)?
If the plug on the interface fits it will usually work. I have used it on several different radios
@@SlowGoose Thank you for the answer!
Holy Hell - I've never seen a setup like that. I'm jealous. That must have cost you a fortune.. Can you do a video of your full setup?
I appreciate that very much. It’s been a long go getting it to where it is. I’m not sure if you looked but there are a few short videos of the shack. It’s hard to be comprehensive in one video. Too many things and I get side tracked lol. Hope you enjoy the videos.
No need to worry about the seam mate, it looks okay. Like in motor vehicles and other products, when seams or joins are necessary, the designer creates a join that is pronounced or aesthetically pleasing so it looks like the join that was meant to be. They don’t try to hide the join like in years gone by, but integrate the join into, say, the car’s design.
Appreciate the feedback. So far it’s worked out pretty well. The radio comes out of there quite often so it’s actually helpful
Excellent video. Made my day.
Happy you enjoyed it
Ok, so, my 991a, is seen by the RSPdx in uno. I can change frequencies in Uno and my 991a responds. What I'm missing is seeing the waterfall with the signals. All I see in Uno is just regular waterfall but no discernable signals. What am I missing? I see in your video a cable connected to the "Ref In" jack in the back of the SDRPlay. I don't have that. Is that what I need? What cable is it? Thanks.
The line at reference in is the usb cable between the sdr and the computer. If you are not seeing signals on the waterfall you may need to adjust the gain on uno. If that doesn’t work try installing another sdr software and see if the problem continues. If it does try different antenna ports on the sdr and make sure the correct antenna is selected in the program. You may have over driven the front end of the sdr. I had that problem and it was because I had my antenna switch disconnected so the sdr never was blocked from my tx power. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions
@@SlowGooseand if you have over driven the front end, we have to replace it right?
@@maxasaurus3008 It has protection diodes that usually pop and it stops there. sometimes you can do more damage
Nice idea
Thank you
As long is as it works for you its good and yes you have nice setup
Thank you
Will this setup work with the FT-891?
It should. As long as you can connect to a computer via the usb port. The tx ground should be picked up from the tune/linear din plug on the back. Not sure if the pin out on the din plug is the same as the 991 but it will work
Awesome video. So basically you connect the FT-991A to your computer and then combine the programs, Omnirig and your SDR program to create what you have. Is that it? Not sure how you are connecting the control of your radio to SDRConsole. I get the connection to the SDRPlay device but the control and video from your radio has me stumped.
Thank you. That’s pretty much it. But don’t forget you also need the sdr itself.
Yes, I have the SDRDuo but still don’t understand how you are controlling the radio.
@@rbc1225I will make a video showing how to set it all up. But omnirig is what talks to the radio. Have you installed the yaesu drivers?
That would be awesome, just a short video of setting Omnirig. When I load Omnirig and start it, all that shows up is 4 com ports, nothing else. I will google some help on it and see if I can work it out. As far as drivers, yes I have the Yaesu drivers, it works fine on my win4yaesu program, but I am interested in yours too.
Noice. New Subscriber. Do you have a link for the foldable antenna? Thank you,
Here you go. This is for the 42.5 inch. That’s what I use. There are several lengths amzn.to/43iilO3
How do i change the language on my vr-n75 from Chinese to english
The only question is the camera moved around so dam much do you supply the sick bags for free.. because I couldn't watch it without felling sick
Unfortunately the puke bags are 2 for a dollar.
what would happen if you did that on the GMRS Pro?
The gmrs pro will go into factory mode but I have not found any advantages to it. It still won’t let you program frequencies manually. Only gives you a list of the gmrs channels
This video made my dizzy.
Yeah it was a bit much with all the back and forth. I plan to make another one a bit more refined.
Is this Windows only?
I believe sdr console will work on windows and mac. That being said, I just checked the downloads page for it and I am only seeing a windows option.
Hello. Interesting video, but lacking in explanation. How do you configure with the cat câble? Omnirig settings? Connecting the box for PTT switching?
It’s hard to give a complete answer because it will vary for everyone. Depending on what port you have the radio plugged into on your computer Will determine the comport. Once you figure that out you just select your rig from the list. As far as the ptt line, on the 991a it’s a bit of a pain. Most radios have a dedicated send line or something of that nature. On the 991a you have to get an 8 pin din plug for the remote jack on the back. Then you need a line from pins 2 and 3. One is labeled as tx ground and the other is ground. It will short across when keyed. The cat cable itself can either be the usb or the serial port on the back of the radio. Drivers for the usb can be found on yaesus website and the serial cable (at least in my experience) will either come with drivers or a link to where to download. The antenna switch is just like hooking up a watt meter. Coax passes through and there is an sma jack that runs to the antenna input on the sdr. Hope this helps. Any more questions feel free to ask.
Works well at 100w or less on the 991A. Anything more the switch won't handle it. For guys running amps forget it, buy a true SDR rig like a FT-71O that allows an external monitor then your good with added power without worry. If your ok with 100w then your good.
I can run legal limit. You just run it before the amp. It never sees more than 100 watts.
@@SlowGoose makes sense & good to know.
Nice setup, and thanks for the link to the USB switch, I used it!
Glad to hear it helped! The more I get used to having it the more I like it.
You'll have insertion loss from the RF switch/ splitter. Why not tap the IF?
Because that won’t mute the input on the sdr. If you tx while the sdr is receiving you will over load the front end of it.
@@SlowGoose You can tap the IF (not RF) internally.
@@AndrewPepper True, I tapped my IF and it's a game changer! <$20 shipped for the tap board and some soldering and baby we got a stew going!
How are you programming your non-repeater HTs to transmit/receive to your repeater? VHF (rx) on channel A and UHF (rx) on channel B, then turn the TDR on and then go to the TDR-AB and lock it to A?
I do it in chirp. There is a setting for cross band. I would have to pull up chirp to give you a more complete answer
@@SlowGoose thanks! I should be able to Google how to do it in Chirp
I’ve been meaning to do a video on chirp. There’s a ton of stuff in the program that’s kind of confusing.
Panning your camera around doesn't make me interested in your video, it makes me seasick, and want to wretch! :)
I had no idea Dice Clay was a ham! Just kidding man. Great job! I’m inspired to experiment with this.
Ohh she got a bone of her own lol. Funny thing is my name is Andrew. Good luck setting it up. It will change the way you use your radios. I bought one for my father a few years ago and now he tells me he could never go back. No need to touch the radio any more
Very very cool setup. Man those rigs are beautiful
Thank you.
The other benefit is now you can open up the receive to a wider bandwidth! Great job.
Thank you. I take it you’re local? I’m on Long Island

Pretty good combo, especially the speakers arrangement, quite practical to have a KVM on the machines, I used to have a hardwired KVM with toggles, years ago.
So far it has worked out great! I’m waiting on a few more pieces to finish up the radio side of everything. Hopefully they show up today

Thank you
looks like it worked out good!
Yeah it works well. I want to go a bit more in depth on some of the other things
soo those duplexers are the trick to make the repeater box to work? what specification should I look for those?
It’s not required for it to work but it is required if you want to use 1 antenna.
@@SlowGoose with two antennas happens the same
This is the third porta-peater youtube I have seen. Looks much easier than the one my buddy and I had about 13 years ago (it was far bigger, heavier, and harder to set up). When will someone put up a video that actually shows the radio configuration process? I see in the comments that you have later videos. I will check them out.
Radio setup as far as what? Frequency? Offset? What would you like to see?
@@SlowGoose On which to set up roger beep, how? On which to set up ctss. I think I know, but some may not (xmit, rcv, both)? Lengths of interior cables if it matters? Why two separate batteries? How to make holes for charging and antenae that don't leak. Ours was in a metal 40mm grenade ammo box and we had leaking problems. How to prevent heat buildup. Is there any programming to do on the repeater controller?
Very good questions to think about. Thanks, @@michaelbrininstool4515
Made of money. Just jealous of course. Nice job on the shack. Better than some EOCs or Dispatch Centers that I’ve seen.
I wish I was made of money. Years of changing design and trading for better stuff. Just a guy with a dream lol.
I assume you used a duplexer, seeing as how you only have 1 antenna.
Yes, in the other videos I show the duplexer/diplexer
I have blue eyes and blue leds killed my vision. I ended up putting black tape over the leds. Apparently wwIi pilots developed cataracts due to intense lights on the radio gear..
The blue does get a bit overwhelming. I usually have to put some sort of filter in front of it to dampen the brightness.
