    Wow that's one very versatile cymbal. If you could only take one cymbal (plus hi hats) to a gig, that's the one. I've recently pulled the trigger on a full set of Agop Xists, which are excellent, but I now want a 22inch Jazz Ride Trad! Amazing crash sound on a cymbal of that size!

    @charlessmith263 15 дней назад

    The mantra here is this - in a jazz session, when the "solos" happen, you do the comping with usually the 'upbeat" snare syncopations - but since this is "jazz", and "jazz" means "improvisation", make the jazz music listener feel the suspense on where you are going to do that "snare upbeat" hit. Vary the time between doing the syncopations, and spread them out. If you want to repeat upbeats, do it only in a short time and then let it go. Keep the suspense going. Generally, snare upbeat hits are going to be a lot when you do fills - and much less when you are in groove. Hope this helps.

  • @charlessmith263
    @charlessmith263 15 дней назад

    From doing 3rd triplet bass drum hits on every beat of 4/4, to short drum rolls, to doing the blast cymbal strike on the 1 after the fill, to doing little snare syncopated accents to the jazz swing groove - jazz comping on drums can be complex. You just need to know the different between straight eighth and swing rhythms, and you need to feel the jazz combo ensemble before you do the syncopations/variations to the jazz basic rhythms (and any fills thereof with it).

  • @charlessmith263
    @charlessmith263 15 дней назад

    The basic jazz fill pattern in swing 4/4 - generally - is this - a snare strike (accented usually) on the second half of 3rd beat, and on the next measure, a bass drum stinger on the first "1" of the next measure - accented usually also. On that bass drum stinger, you can keep the "ride cymbal" on 1 together with it without "blasting" the ride. That's what I am thinking of the basic jazz drum fill. But don't go crazy like Buddy Rich and just simply "blast beats" in jazz without feeling with the other jazz musicians feel with you -unless these musicians know what you are doing. Otherwise, they may be upset with you and you may be kicked off the jazz jam - or the jazz combo. Be sure you get seasoned in jazz drumming basics before you go drum-crazy.

    What a video very insightfull i must say. But I would say addition of metronome would be very helpful I'm not a drummer but I use DAWS to program drums. A metronome would have given me a better idea of when to engage snares and other elements all together.

    As a Drummer and Producer, this is so good! The difference is enormous! Love UA and use all of their products, but the Super 8 are simply MUCH BIGGER! Nonetheless, with the x8p you'll have an amazing sound, but it you compare it, for sure it's more open and clear with Super 8. Great video man, be well!

    I’ve never been a UA guy but I like their plugins. Nothing against the hardware either. However I don’t think using the modeling changes anything with the “current”, as it just uses the DSP to process the incoming signal before it hits the DAW. Am I wrong here? Any documentation on that claim?

    The difference is actually pretty monumental to me. The Super 8 sounds so much fuller in the lows, has a more open and airy top end, and the whole kit just sits in space better.

    This is gonna sound crazy. But I'm listening in a treated room and good monitoring (atc's), and there is a pretty big difference. Its hard to describe but the super 8 to me definitely has a "color" to it and its something that I was shocked that it was as big of a difference, there is a high end subtle push and forwardness to the super 8's that I love. Before this I wasn't sure if I wanted to get these preamps or just the built in pre's. Now I'll get a little cheaper interface (without built in preamps) and get these pre's! Thanks!!

    Wonderful Jazz instruction series you have; love your teaching style and straightforward, right-to-the-point exercises. Little hiccup for me was that my counting started to swing a little which started affecting hit timing! I have to be mindful to keep it militantly straight time. And it's pretty cool to be developing some independence and to be able to sense, manage and keep the straight time and swing time elements separated, sort of from outside yourself! Really, really helpful and spot-on instruction. Wish I lived in in-person lesson distance.
