Leather vs Fabric Hiking boots

When it comes to hiking boots people tend to fall into two main camps, those who prefer leather hiking boots and those who prefer synthetic or fabric hiking boots. Causes of Heatstroke in dogs. Its Not What You Think

There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the causes of heatstroke in dogs. Some well-intentioned such as the infographics we see on Facebook telling how hot is too hot to walk our dogs but they are often simplified to make it easier to understand for the masses. This can cause a lot of friction between well meaning dog owners and dog owners who are just getting by as best they can. ...

    Having done a lot of work as a security guard I will second your recommendation of a 3 D cell Maglight. It is my primary go to flashlight when I'm working outside at night. Maglight has a variant using a proprietary LED that puts out an amazing amount of light, is highly resistant to damage from impact (unlike a bulb which could break if you dropped it) and has good battery life. The only real problem with a Maglight in general is that the rubber boot that covers the switch is prone to coming off. But some duct tape over the boot can be a reasonable fix.

    Very useful video. We have many roads like this near where I live, and I filmed some content like this a while back, but don't think I ever uploaded it. One of the things I do is to carry a pair of walking poles, and when cars approach I carry them across my body at waist height, as many car drivers don't give pedestrians room, but equally they don't want to scratch their shiny cars, so they do move to avoid the tips of the poles damaging their vehicles. Not many people are aware of this, but on unpaved roads where there are pedestrians, car drivers are supposed to slow down as they pass AND give 2 metres of clearance. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for uploading.

    ... however, IMO, if u feel the need to buy military ration packs dont buy from an online company, they just want their company to grow bigger n richer, better to buy from an individual on ebay, marketplace, gumtree etc from someone whom is or was in sevice,, along with item description they write things like this is left over from when I was serving... this is surplus from when I was touring in ...they also sell the usual household items as well which companies dont do. i just bought powdered drink water tablets n fire n water proof matches from ebay sellers v8ratty and hadworsedays1, i dont know these people personally, but best to buy from an individual u dont know what they might be needing money for,, disability aids at home due to disability,, counselling due to mental illness, maybe they volunteer thier time to train cadets , etc, etc.

    I have both. I think the key difference for me is that leather will always reward you with comfort and is repairable. Synthetic materials will be consistent out the box but will need replacing. Synthetic can offer better insulation properties if working at or above the snow line and you don’t need to treat them with anything if you don’t want to. To get a proper leather boot, you’re talking 3-4mm leather which weighs A LOT and is going to cost £500-750 outlay. I now avoid waterproof lined leather boots because no manufacturer can make a lining that works long term, or is fully repairable. Meindl are shocking for this and their warranty is a joke - they won’t cover anything and always have an excuse. If I’m out for multiple days and need reliability, there’s no contest and I’m reaching for my heavy triple stitched single piece leather boot (Dundas store Bjorn). They won’t let you down when you can’t afford it in the middle of nowhere. The risk with a glued synthetic boot is the sole and uppers can fail. That happens on the side of a mountain or the middle of a multi day hike; that’s gutting and potentially dangerous (carry approach shoes in bag). The other issue I see a lot with leather boots now is most £200-300 boots simply aren’t well made and are also glued together (not stitched) with the goretex liner which will fail before the rest of the boot. Therefore, if you have the money, buy both but spend the extra on a double or triple stitched leather boot. If you don’t have the money, buy a decent synthetic boot but make sure you keep it clean to minimise risk of premature failing. The other thing seldom mentioned is investing in good quality insoles for boots to give you that extra support when your feet get tired and decent socks. Both things can totally change your experience. if i need insulation with low weight for day trips, I’m reaching for my Asolo Fugitive because they are the best all rounder I’ve found. Give the boots a rinse (inside and out) to keep sweat and sediment from wearing through the goretex liner, and you’re good. If need reliability then I’m reaching for the Dundas - and they are one B-E-A-utiful boot 😎

    When I was school-age (now in late 60s), we were told to walk on the right to face oncoming traffic (as you said). That gives two pairs of eyes observing. I often drive down country lanes and frequently now see people walk on any side, but appear to be mainly the left - are young people no longer told this?

      I haven't deleted the two gentlemens posts and so censorship has not taken place. I believe they may have removed their comments. I do have every right to censor my channel, but I only tend to do so if people are just being rude without any constructive feedback in it, or it's clearly misinformation or trolling. Look all I did here was wear a different jacket, I wasn't making some big political statement in the channel, it was cold so I opted for a warmer jacket. This is me, my authentic self. You have your beliefs and I have mine. Mine don't override others and others certainly don't override mine. I hope that isn't offensive, but I am who I am and I'm not the BBC. If you have an issue with the UK sending millions to Ukraine, that very much is your problem rather than ours. No offence intended but you need to write to your MP, not me. I am just a guy with a RUclips channel.

    wet wipes/baby wipes are v good for keeping clean n fresh during time of the month, dont get the really small sized ones coz you end up with half the blood on your hands, if you run out of sanitary products, turn to other things in your kit, if u got a small bath towel and a couple of flannels cut the bath towel up into pieces n use flannels as a bath towel, cloths meant for getting rid of condensation, etc, wash n reuse yr diy sanitary towels by immediately soaking them in cold water for a few hours whenever you change them,, n then boiling in salty water n then rinsing in cold water n then hang up to dry, cut up, attach to knickers with surgical tape gaffa tape whatever tape you got, raid yr first aid kit ,dressings meant for wounds or absorbent cotton material meant for a sling, etc, use yr common sense n think outside the box, material must be soft and absorbent so polyester wont be much good,, its a real pain in the arse,, female sanitary products are multipurpose, fire starters, first aid dressings for wounds used with surgical tape or gaffa tape, etc, so even blokes should consider adding female sanitary products to their kit.

    Thanks for the excellent cautionary warnings to alert people to the dangers of walking on roads and night. Unfortunately Road Traffic Incidents have increased since the start of infections by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly referred to as the Covid-19 illness. Take care out there as many Covid19 brain damaged people are driving vehicles and are suffering from impaired risk assessment and heightened aggressive responses. This increase in "accidents" was observed prior to the availability of any vaccines.

    I'm Canadian so I'll be the UN Peacekeeper. lol You must remember that Americans are Brits on the other side of the pond; they knew what it was like to live under English law and they factored that in when they set up the USA. Canada is in the middle, and guns for group competition or solo target shooting are just as valid as hunting. Like the UK we don't have stand your ground or Castle laws (hey, aren't those castles British things?). Our right to self defense is limited by first avoiding, then de-escalating, and only when our health and life are in danger can we legally fight. However, cops here are lazy so you will be charged with assault first and then YOU have to prove you were in the right to defend yourself even if the attacker invaded your home. Only police and criminals are allowed to carry guns in Canada; therefore when someone tried to shoot your wife or your child, you will not have a gun to shoot back BUT the criminal will and the police arrive after the shooting is done. Canada has a very poor government right now and it is trying to put us on a UK level when it comes to gun ownership. Now imagine you worked hard to buy a car, paid taxes on your car, paid taxes on the fuel, and have a 30 year clean driving record and suddenly the government wants to take your car away from you for "the greater good". Remember, that at least in Canada (and likely the USA) cars kill more people every year than guns. UK lawmakers are also insane when it comes to knives. Banning the locking feature that is, like a seatbelt, a safety feature to prevent the blade from closing on your hand, show how low IQ the law makers have. USA gangs have guns, UK gangs have knives; people who want to injure or kill will always find a way.

    • @dogdadoutdoors
      @dogdadoutdoors 10 дней назад

      But you have to remember whilst there is always a way to kill somebody, overall homicide rates in the UK are 8 times lower than they are in the US, even taking the population differences into account. It's clearly working for us by comparison.

      Thats a good point, and it works great for the back, but I can't see the back of my rucksack from the front! Ideally, you'd have a rucksack cover and a high viz to cover you from all angles. I think its most important, assuming you are walking into oncoming traffic to be seen from the front, as those drivers share the same lane. I use a vest for me and just a high-viz reflective belt for my bag, but then I'm big enough (or my bag is small enough) that you can still see the vest from behind with the bag on too.

Without intending to make my channel overtly political, I feel it's important to signal my personal support for our friends in Ukraine who are not only defending their own country from foreign aggression, but by extension Europe. I don't think Putin would have stopped at Ukraine if they hadn't blunted his sword and held back the tide. I have been wearing that patch on that jacket since I got it in 2022. I just don't normally wear that jacket when I am filming. We have quite a few Ukrainian families in my town who were displaced by the war and I like to make them feel welcomed and supported. They are worth having just in case you get caught out. I got caught out over the summer when I got lost on a training area and ended up having to walk back along a road in complete darkness!

  • @MikeMakesUK
    @MikeMakesUK 11 дней назад

    Number one rule: Take responsibility for your own safety on the road. Do not rely on anyone else. Hi-vis and lights are all well and good. They can certainly help, so use them by all means. But it is far far better to not be where a vehicle is likely to hit you. Don't walk along busy roads without a pavement or a substantial verge. See or hear a vehicle coming? Get off the road! Watch the vehicle pass. Only then continue on your journey. Eyes and ears open and pay attention. What you can hear and see and reacting appropriately is more important than (but doesn't negate) the need to be seen.

      @dogdadoutdoors 10 дней назад

      I kind of agree with you, which is why I highlighted the need to be vigilant and take action before I went into high-viz, although on many official trails there are sections of road you really have no choice but to walk along. Verges can be dangerous too if they cause you to stumble and fall into the road, you just need to exercise judgment and try and take the lesser of two evils sometimes.

    • @MikeMakesUK
      @MikeMakesUK 10 дней назад

      @@dogdadoutdoors Very true. You have to make the judgement. With dangerous verges, I will always say stop and let traffic past before continuing. As we know, there can be exceptions. However, if you absolutely have to rely on a driver seeing you, then you shouldn't be there. It's clearly too dangerous for walking. Find a different route if that is the case.

    A number of years ago when walking home from the stables where I kept my pony, I wore flourescent, reflective bands on both arms, both legs plus one fixed to the back of my backpack. I also had reflective cycle clips on my ankles, a red bicycle light on the back of my backpack and 2 white bicycle lights (those little silicone ones, often sold in places like Halfords for around £5) on the front, attached to the shoulder straps. All of the lights were on the slow blink mode. Every car that passed me as I walked along the narrow footpath (path on one side as is common on some bigger country roads), slowed right down and gave a very wide berth. Without those lights and reflectives, I would have been invisible to passing cars on that unlit, tree lined country road. Even if they didn't see me well, I raised my hand to thank each and every one of those drivers as they passed slowly and cautiously. Wear lights and reflectives while walking at night or in poor weather conditions folks 😎

      It really does make a difference. I remember cycling back from an adult training night in cadets in uniform, which was camouflage. I had two rear lights so didn't worry too much, one on my bike, one on my rucksack. A car nearly hit me from the rear and beeped at me so I stopped and checked. One light had gone off and the other had fallen off! Thats why belt and braces using everything isn't overkill!

    Obviously, camping in the UK is much different than in America. When you have 70 million people on a tiny island, there are not a lot of places remote enough to avoid people. Personal protection is much more limited. In America, your problem is more trailhead crime. People are breaking into cars. If you follow the two mile rule(hike in at least two miles), then 99% of your people problems disappear. Although tweakers(meth users) are very persistent. I have found an abandoned camp used for manufacturing drugs far out in the wilderness at very high altitude. Hiking around Northern California, I could see someone stumble on a cartel grow. That would be life ending. America has greater fauna than Britain. I know where I live, larger animals are a threat to people. To go into the woods where I live without some protection is not just ill advised, it is foolish. We have grizzlies, black bears, wolves, and cougars. Plus, there are a number of other exotic predators. Most people don't know, but dogs are the NUMBER ONE bear attractant. Equal to not practicing camp hygiene. Bears consider dogs to be wolves or coyotes. Which are a predator to bear cubs. Bears will avoid humans generally. But if you have a dog, they all of a sudden become interested. A great deal of bear attacks happen with a dog present. In the northern states of America, bringing your dog. can bring you problems. Especially the Pacific Northwest. So even if you don't encounter two legged predators here, you have to beware of the other varieties. It is tragic that level of camp safety is required understanding in the UK. I watch a couple of camping channels from there. It seems strangers wandering through camp is commonplace there. Even in the middle of the night or someplace that seems remote. The legal policy on self defense in the UK is absolutely ridiculous. Not being able to have a fire so you don't attract attention? That sounds like it tears out the soul of camping. Blessings brother.

      We definitely have a much denser population than the U.S and so getting away from people can be harder and thats why we keep bumping into people, there isn't a 'wildnerness' as such. Parts of the some of the bigger national parks like Snowdonia can be very quiet, so long as you avoid the tourist areas. Our self defence policy always seems odd to Americans, but you have to remember whilst we speak (almost) the same language and share a lot of common values, its a very different culture. I actually did a video on that one which kind of explains some of the logic behind it. ruclips.net/video/VjVq7FCyvHM/видео.html

    Well, there was this one time I woke up on high alert. I had no idea why, but I was on high alert & just knew something was up, so I lay very still & quiet. after a while I heard the wild pig grunting outside my little low profile 1P tent. It sounded like the pig settled down close to my tent & after quite some time I succumbed to sleep again to wake after dawn. Lay there a while, what to do, was the pig is a boar, still sleeping or nosing around nearby, would it be startled by me? I couldn't hear anything & well, my morning bladder needs decided the matter anyway. Never saw another sign of that pig, but I did pull up stakes and moved on by mid morning. I certainly don't fancy my chances in a run in with a wild boar, especially solo. Those tusks can have you bled out in a minute or two.

    I would beg to differ about who Jack the Ripper was. The prime candidate and the person the City of London Police were watching 24 hours a day was a man called Aaron Kosminski. He was only saved from arrest when his family had him committed to a private mental hospital where he died two years later.

      @@dogdadoutdoors Aaron Kosminski was the man the police believed was responsible for the murders and for whom there is most evidence against. All theories are not equally valid, there are a lot of wild ideas that are provably false. Such as a member of the Royal Family, the Duke of Clarence, was responsible. If Kosminski had not been committed to a private lunatic asylum, it is highly likely he would have been put on trial and sentenced to death and there would not be the continuing mystery.
