A Chilly Autumn Wild Camp - Nortent Vern 1 - Lake District
Nice to be back out camping in weather other than rain or poor weather conditions! The UK weather this year has been mostly rain and high winds again with what seems to be an increase of storms as well! What’s going on? This was a nice camp using the Nortent Vern 1 tent again, the tent handled winds no problem of 25mph and 30mph gusts. Nortent have upgraded the tent poles from 9mm to 9.5mm and have now sent these to me free of charge so will use these on my next trip and compare’ plus I can use them for double poling in really high winds. I still haven’t made my mind up about the Nemo Tensor Extreme sleeping pad, its comfortable enough but considering the very high R-value you can’t reall...

Wild Camping in Bleak Conditions - Using The New Nortent Vern 1
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Another interesting Wild Camp in Lake District. This time I was using the new Nortent Vern 1 which many people are trying to say this could be a challenge to to Hilleberg Soulo. The weather conditions were awful again, this time the visibility was very poor with rain, mist / fog with 20mph winds. The route was rocky, wet and slippery for first half and then boggy for the remainder. The tent is ...
Wild Camping in Non-Stop Rain - (Testing the Nemo Tensor Extreme Sleeping Matt).
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Weather forecast got it wrong again as it was supposed to be very light rain but ended up being non-stop heavy rain all evening and night. However, still good to be out taking in all the countryside air and admiring the Great Lake District views. Also got to test out the Nemo Tenser Extreme sleeping Matt which was very comfortable and warm. Apart from being tent bound all night it’s still good ...
My Winter Wild Camp From Hell! How it All Went Terribly Wrong!
Просмотров 36 тыс.9 месяцев назад
What started off as a promising looking wild camp turned into the worst wild camping experience I could imagine. If only I had taken my 9 Inch Easton tent pegs the tent would have been secured, unfortunately the ground underneath the snow was a bit soft and muddy probably from all the previous rain. No boulders about either to put on top of the pegs just wasn’t my day. The wind gusts only start...
Wild Camping in Storm Babet - Hilleberg Nallo 2 (RedTarn)
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Год назад
A much tougher hike up to red tarn than anticipated, mainly due to the high winds and rain. Red tarn is 720meters high and is situated below the summit of Helvellyn which is third highest peak in England. The Hilleberg Nallo 2 tent was excellent, straight forward to put and very stable in the winds with good living space. Look forward to taking this tent on my winter camps although I still love...
Wild Camping at Sprinkling Tarn - Lake District (Terra Nova Starlite 2 Tent)

A good walk up to Sprinkling Tarn from Seathwaite farm although visibility wasn’t the best at the top. Nights starting to draw in a bit now as it was dark by about 8.40pm. Weather and views the following morning were superb, think I picked the wrong day and should have waited till the Saturday. Starting to get into my favourite time of year for Wild Camping, love autumn.
Blea Water Wild Camp - Big Agnes Rapide SL Sleeping Pad Review
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
Thought I would take the Hilleberg Soulo on this trip as I hadn’t used it in about 5 months. Also wanted to try out the Big Agnes Rapide SL Sleeping Pad, have to say it’s the most comfortable pad I’ve ever had and will be my go to pad from now on. The path up to Blea Water was very boggy especially after all the rain but was a decent enough walk and fairly easy, will definitely do that one agai...
A Very Windy Wild Camp In The Terra Nova Starlite 2 Tent
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.Год назад
Good little test in the wind for the Starlite 2 and have to say it handled it no problem at all. I definitely think pitching the tent into the wind is the right way to go, that was a good tip from Taunton Leisure. Good thing also about this tent is the space inside should I get tent bound because of bad weather etc. The total weight is 1.8kg including the footprint modification for the vestibul...
Wild Camp Lake District - Terra Nova Starlite 2 Tent Review

Wild Camp at Grisedale Tarn Ambleside and a look at the Terra Nova Starlite 2 tunnel tent and also the Rab Ascent 300 sleeping bag. Was very impressed by both but could do with looking at the regular wide sleeping mat due to the luxurious space inside the Starlite. My EXPED UL Sleeping Matt is overkill for summer due to its R-value of about 4.8 which is about -18 for winter.
Naturehike Cloud up 2 Tent Review - (Budget Tent Wild Camp)

Great Wild Camp with Fabulous weather and views. Temperatures dropped quite a bit at night so sleeping bag and matt not so ideal as I cold even with a montane prism jacket and hat on when sleeping. Tent was really easy to pitch and excellent space. The temperature dropped quite a bit later in the evening and sleeping bag didn't keep me all that warm to be honest and I didn't have an insulate ma...
Wild Camp using the new Terra Nova Laser Compact 2 & Rab Neutrino 400 sleeping bag
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.Год назад
After a couple years of Wild Camping I finally realised that carrying my winter gear which weighed about 18.5kg during the spring, summer and autumn was really over kill and far too heavy. I do love my Hilleberg Solou but at 2.6kg including the footprint it's a heavy one person tent. However, my new 3 season gear only weighs about 11.5kg and it made my walk so much easier, this is definitely th...
Stickle Tarn Wild Camp - Lake District
Просмотров 505Год назад
A short but steep wild camp at Stickle Tarn Lake District on what turned out to be another wet and windy wild camp. Have come to learn that you cannot trust the Mountain Weather Forecast. Better to check local weather forecast station and try to judge it based on that. Rain was supposed to have stopped by mid day but rained constantly so was tent bound again with winds hitting 50kph throughout ...
Winter Wild Camping in Sub-Zero Temperatures - Using an OEX Tent (Lake District)
Просмотров 495Год назад
Wanted to try my old OEX Bandicoot 2 tent out as I hadn't used it for a couple of years instead of my Hilleberg Soulo. Weather forecast was much windier and colder than forecasted, that was my second issue of the day, the first issue was my hydration pack water pipe had kinked and couldn't get any water out as I was walking. As usual I ran out of time and daylight at the top, the batteries on m...
A Very Wet & Windy Wild Camp Lake District - Rab Alpine 800 Down Sleeping Bag Review
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 года назад
A very wet and very gusty wild camp with the odd rumble of thunder and hailstones. I knew the forecast was gusts of about 65KpH and wind chill factor of about -8C so wanted to try the Hilleberg Soulo and my new Rab sleeping bag in these conditions before the winter. This was the worst conditions I've camped in so far but feel a lot more confident about my equipment for the winter. At one point ...

Great set up you’ve got, tent looks awesome, nice to see you back out again
Hi im getting a used Terra Nova competition 1 one same shape as this one. How have you found it in the wind? How did you attach extra gunpoints? More guy points the better !
I’m 6ft 2 and I have the Nevis 100 and it’s surprisingly spacious I can fit my 90 litre berghaus rucksack in there with my pillow and what not and there’s plenty of room you won’t get a better house than this for the price and there’s vids on here up against the hillaberg and it withstands a right pounding 👍🏻 great vid pal
The water is for his dramm
Cracking end to the video showing the reality of mountain camping! Love it.. also love what you did with the footprint - I also like a sheeted porch area - so useful. Thanks for making this film!
That was quite a watch.... Would loved to have known whether the 9 inch. Eastons would have made the difference... Well done you on surviving the experience...
Just wondering, do you keep the footprint attached when you pack the tent up?
maybe glance at a weather forecast next time you camp up a mountain in the middle of Januray ?
Great effort
Abisko 2 and shape 2 can match it in my view.... and experience. Plus I remember not liking or wanting to like the Shape 2. Outstanding tunnel tent
That was the best and most entertaining out door video iv ever seen. Thank you.
I was that terrified watching that I will never ever camp out or even be able to sleep well tonight...
Anyone else out there finding that the Nemo Tensor Extreme is uncomfortable? Plenty warm, just blamed it on a sore back after an all day hike. After a few weeks back home it still felt the same. The horizontal baffles? I have other pads with verticle baffles and don't have a sore back. Are the baffle directions copyrighted?
At ur safe
At lease ur safe
How do you rate the noise level of the Rapide mat ? Any crinkle sound when you move or roll around ?
I've been using the old version of the Nevis (Vango Zenith 200) for 7 years now and it's been great. If and when it dies, I'll be getting the Nevis.
Great video! The silver mat - what make is it please
Nice sound. I recommend you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak.add this sound in your bucket list.
Still inspiring video to go camping, thankyou.
Thanks Jock, great looking tent and a stunning camp. I've subscribed 👍
Love the video mate👍🏻 was considering buying the nallo 2 myself . If the tent is designed and expected to be in severe conditions it shouldn't be up to you to buy additional pegs to make it SAFE!!!
Hi mate, the 4 bungees if you look close they are double looped so they are stronger and don't have to stretch as far ❤
Nice relaxing wild camp with cracking views. 👌🏼
do you need to seam seal this tent?
You don’t need to but I did anyway
At lest with the fog you couldn't see your tenting neighbours. 👍
I can advise you to put mat under a silver foil not other way. Even if your mat have a good rating you inflating with a cold air so my advice will give you extra C to comfort.
Great presentation of the tent. If I were willing to carry all those cans of Brew Dog and a whole bottle of wine I wouldn't be concerned much about the weight of my tent or anything else for that matter. Is loads of booze mandatory for Scottish camping adventures?
Mandatory for a Scotsman 😜 I never drink it all tbh
@@jockoutdoors2727 As an expat Scot I just needed to be sure certain traditions were being upheld.
Well done Jock loving the Spaghetti Western music, need to get a muff for your mic to sort out the wind noise,
Hi, I watched your vid a while back but coming back to comment as I'm looking for a first serious wild camping tent. Whats this tent like for sitting up in and what is your overall experience like with it? Ideal for 3-season conditions and would you recommend this? Any other recommendations for a lightweight tent for a new wild camper? Cheers
It’s quite spacious tbh but not the best for sitting up in unless you sit up in the middle. Great little tent though.
WOW!!! That wind! OMG that was insane! Glad you made it through!
Nice video! Looks like a relaxing camp in the rain. What tarn was that below you? It almost looked like Angle Tarn but not sure. Cheers from California.
Easdale Tarn Grasemere
Nice video…Have fun stay safe.
Holy shit. I'm glad you survived. Peace stay strong brother.
Great video, thank you! I have just bought the same one, wide width, but regular length. However, I am struggling to find a padded mat or even a foil mat to go underneath that is the same width. Do you mind sharing which one you have please? Looks like yours is as wide as the Rapide!
I got my close cell foam matt from Amazon, just type in foam foldable camping matts. Think they are about £20 and all standard size.
Untill you need a piss 😣😣
Beer is good for you 😉
Well done
… like why????? Omg
You endured enough to gain all our respect. Salute to you sir. Awesome video and experience for all of us 😁👌🏽
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for sharing your experiences. I'm sure everyone who's watched it has learned/re-learned/had reinforced, important lessons. We all need to be reminded that Mother Nature can get really nasty & that we need to take all necessary precautions in an effort to mitigate her nasty moods. Strong Gusty Winds are the most difficult of nasty weather we have to deal with, much more so than rain or cold. Yes, I've "Like", Subscribed, & rang the notification bell. I carry a Soto WindMaster fuel canister type of stove. I always begin with a full 4oz canister, thanks to my G Works fuel transfer tool. I have an old wool sock; I cut the toe box off, cut a small hole in the toe end of the sock so I can pull it over the top of the fuel canister & leave the covered valve accessible when I want to use it. The wool sock prevents condensation from freezing on the metal canister when being used by the stove PLUS a sock covered metal canister is much more comfortable when placed underclothing to keep warm or next to your body when inside your sleeping bag. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Absolutely NOT! It should have been at least 3; but then you got that extra weight when pushing limits.
Lucky guy, walking down in those conditions could have ended very badly. A tent collapsed still offers shelter especially with a warm sleeping bag, yes it won't be the best of nights but you will be safe until daylight. Agree regarding the Easton pegs or should we call them zombie killers, use nothing else, never let me down. Stay safe, atb Bill
Im not going to be nice like tje rest of the comments, you are a very lucky guy,min 5 and 50 mile winds and you decide to go up a mountain. Your an idiot!?!
He wasn't experiencing 50mph winds when hiking up or when selecting the site to pitch his tent. However, I do agree, that he probably should have selected a more sheltered campsite. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
I sympathise, I had the same tent for over 12yrs, I took it cycle/camping all over Europe and it performed brilliantly. Then last October during storm Babet (I think it was called) I was camped in Pateley Bridge, the winds were so strong the outer was blown against the inner and capillary action took over. I was getting a constant shower all night long! By early morning all my kit was wet through, fortunately I was using a sleeping bag cover or my down sleeping bag would have been a soggy mess. Anyway I threw the tent out and bought a Durston X-Mid 1 person tent. Haven't regretted it.
My solution to your experience is the outer material I selected when I bought my Western Mountaineering Down filled Antelope (5ºF) sleeping bag. I selected the Gore-Windstopper outer fabric that has a 12,000 hydrostatic head rating. I don't want my Down filled sleeping bag to get wet. I could have selected the Micro-Fiber outer fabric that is lighter & more packable, but only has a 2,000 hydrostatic head rating. When that fabric gets wet so will the Down.
I'm over my budget for camping gear now, even so these bags would be way over my budget, until I win the Lotto!!😁@@azclaimjumper
Brilliant adventure, that’s why we buy Hilleberg tents.
I have & use my Hilleberg Enan in the high Sierras, however, Hilleberg tents, like all tents, need to be staked down with big rocks on top of pegs in strong gusty winds. However, broken poles is an entirely different matter. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
@@azclaimjumperI had a pole break on an MSR Hubba Hubba NX a few years ago, that was a night to remember. Hasn’t happened to me with a Hilleberg though. Safe trails brother.
@@dougieranger A tent with a broken pole may fall on the people inside, however I think it should continue to provide more shelter than getting out into the open & unsheltered surroundings as long as the guylines remain reasonably intact & stakes remain staked into ground. I like to think that Hilleberg 3-season tents are stronger than so-called 4-season tents made by other manufacturers. Hilleberg 3-season Enan is the model I chose instead of the 4-Season Akto. When I'm expecting a night of strong gusty winds, I make it a point to keep my boot right next to the top part of my sleeping bag because if I should need to get out of the tent in an emergency, my boots are the very most important piece of equipment I have. I, personally, would be severely limited if I didn't have boots on my feet. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
That wind sounds icy. You don't need cans as they'll keep you cold have a shot of whisky instead.
Saw the views you had and thought Id give it a look.... Nice little film. Shows that bail isnt fail. Sometimes its a win. You did well to make the right choice. Lesson learned too. Ive done two camps since i bought some longer pegs and left them at home so far. Not next time!! Stay safe out there . Subd 👌
GREAT VID BUT PLS BE MORE PREPARED AS ID LIKE TO CONTINUE WATCHING YOUR VIDS!!!!!
