Script aside or whatever, the movie has amazing production quality and performances
Gladiator 2 was a great ad for Gladiator 1. We all went back to watch the original to see how much better it was.
Hey there! Loved your take on Gladiator. Your insights were spot on! I was wondering if you might consider doing a video on M:I Dead Reckoning? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks!
Gladiators vs. Predators could be a cool comic
Yeah, but, they all need ammunition, and a short stubby near razor sharp blade that you need a grinder to cut in two to ruin and that you can put on your wall mantle and it looks cool, lasts longer. Yeah, if I want somebody dead and it was a choice between a sword or a gun, I would choose the gun. But swords are beautiful. Also, the soundtrack to gladiator is awesome.
Fighting men troughout the ages didn't look like jacked up movie stars. Roman Centurions looked like 1920's wrestlers and boxers. They had strong constitutions but didn't spend their days pumping iron.
This is a classic, and mostly it was good not due to the script because they had lots of stuff missing, the actors made it work and the editing, truly a team effort!!! I love the movie, and I never think about the build of Crowe because he sells the character, I believe he's just a guy, someone with fighting experience, and the rest is just a great story!!!
Actually Gladiators were all quite fat and tubby. Check out Roman art of Gladiators, they were all large men with large amounts of body fat. Gladiators were specifically fed on high callory diets to increase their fat levels. The reason behind this being that most blows delivered in the ring were light slashes, designed to look really good, but caused minimum damage, allowing Gladiators to survive fights that looked dangerous to the audience but were actually pretty safe for the combatants. The light slash from a blade would cut the large amount of fat and produce blood, making the wound look serious. However, the fat was preventing the blade from cutting into muscle and tendon. It was show business, with Gladiator shows being the movies of their day. Gladiators would of resembled something like modern Sumo wrestlers. Gladiators would not have possessed the modern gym bunny muscular body.
But the important question is who would win a fight between Maximus and William Wallace from Braveheart?
Not sure that most gladiators or soldiers of that era were ripped, Zack! Crowe looked fit, strong, like he could take care of business - honestly, that's what gave Gladiator at least some sense of realism. Be honest, what did most of the guys you served with look like? I bet more like Crowe and less like some actor that's been working with a personal trainer and dietician for 6 months.
You know who doesn't love Gladiator? Russell Crowe. That guy lost his temper more than once with Ridley Scott over the poor script quality. You want to see a great Russell Crowe movie? Romper Stomper. Holy crap, he is scary as hell in that one. Totally unlikeable, but in that good way like Pesci.
This one is from my pool of top films I rewatch a lot. I also rewatch his Robin Hood and Master and Commander, but not as much.
I remember reading an interview with Crowe when the movie was released. I think he said that he was told not to lose too much weight, because 'chunky is hunky'.
I'm starting to form a conspiracy theory about the prevalence of blade and gladiator in the early 2000s barracks and the casting for gladiator 2.
9:52 I always think of the Family Guy bit of Ben Affleck preparing for a role 20 minutes before it shoots.
Historically Gladiators were known to be in excellent shape but they had a layer of fat that would actually protect them against cutting and stabbing weapons. Look up “Barley Munchers” you’ll see what I mean.
Gladiator is a good movie and Russell Crowe a great actor. That said: Go look a Chuck Liddell circa 2000. Crowe’s body mass index is about the same. Chuck Liddell never looked like a fitness model either.
I don’t believe you need chiseled abs and major pecs to be a slugger MMA fighter.
@@TimScottSuiGenerisI always look at Nate Diaz, he's some random looking guy who'd leave the beach bar, and put you to sleep or pop you 2-3x before you wake up 15min later.
Clicked on this to say, ZACK! I FINALLY GOT YOUR BOOKS! Hyped to read Rambo first, gonna read Jawbreakers in order tho because hi yes I'm that guy. Pics in the morning. Also I'll actually watch when work is quiet.
Gladiator is Ridley Scott making a Shakespearean period drama.
I remember loving it while also recognizing there were a lot of elements that just didn't work outside of a movie. It made it cheesy, but I didn't care. The soundtrack was amazing, and half of the lines were specifically written so that accountants and dentists could repeat them later at work.
Dang, I still have not seen this movie.
Then you are not yet entertained.
I just watched the round table last night, but they talk about the on set shooting and most of the actors say banning guns on set would be fine. Until it gets to Nic Cage and he says it would be a bad thing to do without saying it. He says every stunt man needs to be an actor and every actor needs to be a stuntman and needs to know how to properly use a gun.
The historical inaccuracy is what bothers the right people.
I think the emperor is the new Johnny Storm
Mini rant (not directed at YaBoiZack): Why do people that have never seen the original movie go and pay good money to watch a sequel? I get some people were not alive when Gladiator came out, or for that matter, when the original Top Gun came out, but you can always stream the originals at home (sometimes even for free). I have never understood this.
It could have used more of the rhino goring the gladiators. That part sort of just comes and goes. It picked up for me once they got to the gladiatorial part.
As long as they didn’t resurrect Maximus I’m fine
Same thing wrong with Highlander 2
You're probably suppose to take a picture of the shrine to Solomon Grundy
This feels like a movie that they could have called anything else and then dropped a reference to the previous movie in it and that would have felt more natural because no one would be expecting it. I think we have a few real actors around, but most of them have been snubbed by hollywood in one way or another, like Nicolas Cage or Brendan Fraser.
I’ve wanted to see a naval gladiator fight since I first learned that was a thing totally worth the price of admission.
The " oh my" type guy was great. Deadpool and Wolverine had one also.
Drinker: Who asked for Gladiator 2? What man wants to see a movie about gladiatorial combat or Roman history!? At the Wicked screening we were having constant sing alongs and dancing in the aisles! My Fitbit told me my heart rate never got below 120!
Not as terrible as people are claiming But im now about 95% certain that Ridley Scott has dedicated the last of his salty-british life waging high-budget cinematic warfare against the sacred cows of cultures he loathes; in the most smarmy, patriotically-british way possible Napolean actually got the french to momentarily suspend their bi-weekly revolution to collectively croak dissaprovingly Gladiator 2 might just be the straw that breaks the itallian's spaghetti A-historic but focuses on actual historical figures that the native cultures are likely familiar with while the rest of the world is left clueless regarding the screeches of blasphemy? Check Does the main cast feature anyone close to the culture's being depicted in terms of nationality? Pedro Pascal is chilean which is just like spain which is burrito italy Ariba! Will the script at least feature the native languages in some way? Script will be 99.9% english with british accents But for sensitivity's sake they might have a few characters offer their best tony soprano Is this because countries like italy, rome, and/or france have yet to discover cinema and have no history of film making in their countries? 😂😂😂 Tune in next week as Ridley Scott begins production of his next period epic, which aims to explain why India is far superior without british rule; using american actors and production companies, and features a mural of Kirsten Dunst using the magna carta as a perogi while wearing an "i ❤ ganesha" t-shirt
To me it felt like Gladiator 1 is finding and becoming a fan of a new metal band You follow them for a while as they become increasingly popular Eventually they relase Gladiator 2 where they were afforded top of the line production, instruments, an actual studio; but all of their success has ironically resulted in a final product being a completely anodyne experience devoid of most of what drew you to them in the first place. Most dissapointingly many of the consessions you could overlook in the earlier work due to the quality of the final product are now hyper exaggerated from the overproduction.
I saw the movie. I liked it. I have a poster of it. I still like Ridley Scott.
I thought the story was very messy. The original might have some historical inaccuracies, but the story has a clear path, great characters with a satisfying ending. This one just doesn’t live up to that. It needed a decent antagonist. Denzel’s character turning into the villain seemed to be a last minute decision.
I don’t think it was a last minute decision, Macrinus was scheming the entire time to take over. From the gambling against a very influential/popular senator, the sabotage of the General’s revolt, to discovering the secret of Lucius’ heritage, to staging the downfall of both Emperor’s.
Cheers as always
Happy Thanksgiving!
Now what does Boyd Rally have to say? Id rather hear his thoughts.
"Fuckin' librals made swordfighting gay!" ... probably
Nerdrotic said in his review for wicked..." the acting was good, the music was good, the set pieces was good.... I HATED IT" I couldn't believe he ACTUALLY said the quiet part out loud!
I mean... if the writing sucks then the acting, music, and set pieces aren't going to save it. The story is the most important part of a movie. Everything else is just pretty pictures and sounds on a screen.
It felt like a half written script. Like there's no reason for a lot of stuff that the character do
You're the most Army person I know. Can you review Generation Kill?? I love that mini series
It definitely wasn't boring . It was bad but it wasn't boring . I never came close to dozing off or anything. I actually liked the lead actor but I seem to be on an island with that.
As GenX I distinctly remember Siskel & Ebert actually reviewing a movie AFTER they watched it. I never would have thought reviewers would have any credibility if they “reviewed” and didn’t watch it. I suppose if you go into Gladiator 2 thinking it would be trash & don’t want to watch it, then don’t review it. 🤷🏻♂️
Shocking thing about this movie ...Denzel was horrible..he was playing Denzel in a movie that takes place now instead of someone from Rome then. It was bad.
Gladiator did not need the guy from Training Day, and yet...
@@GrahamBradley Did it need Johnny Cash?
Stop coughing, dammit!
Its not really a sequel. And the first movie was perfect as you would say.
👀I don’t think I ever finished the entirety of the first Gladiator😅
Are you not entertained!?
It definitely has its lulls… it’s not the technical masterpiece people claim it is (nostalgia plays into that), but it is great.
I rewatched it a few years ago, I don’t think it’s all that great. It’s hovering around decent, in my book. My friends love it so my vote is outnumbered.
This movie is a modern masterpiece, and pretty much the ultimate example of a “guy flick” (as opposed to a chick flick lol). It’s frustrating that it flew so far under the radar. Hopefully someday people will get a clue and it will get the recognition it deserves. It also sucks that I have to pay for Netflix whenever I wanna re-watch it since there aren’t physical versions of their films. Triple Frontier is just too damn good to be stuck on a streaming service. Especially one that might delete it from all existence someday to “make space for new content” or whatever.
