    The part around Lakenham Mill was known as the Cock after the pub which was near by, such a shame to see the state of the river there with all the trees across it. As a kid in the 70's we spent hours playing in there.

    Nice watch. I put that sign up on the cattle drink about no canoeing some twenty years ago when a fishing group rented the field, also most of those trees at the start were planted a sapling around the same time as part of a habitat restoration project.

    Really enjoyable listening to you negotiate all of those issues. You talk of the proximity of car parks to launch points. Do you always inflate your boards at your car and carry them to the water or do you ever inflate them at the water’s edge and carry the pump with you “on board”, so to speak? I’m a new SUP purchaser all kitted up about to go for my first paddle…somewhere in Suffolk. Did a two hour taster on the Stour and didn’t fall off so I’m brimming with confidence! (self deprecation).

    I used to live in Bures, and fished the mill pool every Sunday during the season. This was back in the 80's, and the part around the weir itself was NEVER accessible. It was private and out of bounds to the public. The deck was there way back in the 80's too, and was used as a fishing platform originally. The fence was always there behind it too. I fished that whole stretch from the rec all the way past the weir to the farm up near Wormingford. This brings back memories.

    We canoed this stretch in July 2022. It was very overgrown, possibly more so than this video shows. It took us 9 hours in a Canadian canoe and was hard work in many places due to numerous trees blocking the river. In some places we used loppers and a saw to clear a way through and in others it was a matter of hauling the canoe over the obstacles. The water level was low due to previous weeks being hot and dry and we had to take the canoe in a few places. Challenging but satisfying to make it to Thetford along a beautiful section of water.

    Thanks for this upload, actually planning this trip tomorrow and was wondering how you get from Hellesdon Mill car park to continue upstream as we want to go upstream first. Looks like you take the Tudd then hopefully join back to the Wensum although you didn't show it you didn't indicate any hassle so hoping it's OK.

    How refreshing to read a civil and considerate exchange between two competing interests. In part this could be because Tengisgol Angling is both a paddler and an angler. There should probably be more people with feet in both camps! But, either way, the dispute won't be settled soon. FWIW, I would love to be able to canoe on any stretch of river. I'd like to think I could be courteous towards any angler whose lines I passed.

    Just for the avoidance of any doubt (and I am not passing judgment!), and having watched the footage, save for the specific entry point at Swanton Morley (which I am uncertain about) every other piece of bank/land in the footage is 100% privately owned. This includes upstream of and including Elsing Mill (and the surrounding fields), and immediately upstream of the old bridge at Lyng (both banks), and all of the land save for the road bank which you cannot reach without going onto private land. Technically, there is zero passage, and no way of traversing this route, without trespassing on private land. The creator of the footage makes reference to not being certain about whether the land is private or not, and is therefore uncertain as to whether it would be trespass, but I can unequivocally confirm that is the case. I also appreciate that trespass is a contested issue as well, so I am just pointing out the facts and not starting a debate I promise.

    • @oliverlawer4694
      @oliverlawer4694 3 года назад

      Thank you for the extra info! Yes, like many of the rivers in England, the riverbed is owned by landowners for large sections. Many landowners accept that paddlers have no other option than to turn back or trespass to continue downstream. And some make it easier for paddlers to cross their land. In the case of Swanton Morley to Lyng (Mill Street), they’ve kindly mowed a pathway through the weeds :) In other cases tho, such as near Harleston, they’ve placed a ‘private land’ sign and locked the gate, even though it is an established BCA route, which is a shame. Unfortunately some other river users, namely fishermen, can be very rude. But we always keep it polite. We are all there to enjoy nature and the river and we do what we can not to disturb the peace as much as possible. I believe the BCA have an active campaign to clarify the legal position of paddling a river where the riverbed is owned. England in particular, unlike Scotland and much of the EU, has a special issue with rights of navigation. Until it’s resolved, no-one really knows where they stand.

    • @MrPhumm
      @MrPhumm 3 года назад

      I'm not so sure the mowing was intended for the benefit of paddlers ;-). There are two schools of thought around paddling where the riverbed is owned - the BCA represents one side of the debate and the Angling Trust the other. I'm not sure it will be resolved soon because I can't see the mechanism that would be used to get a judgement. I paddle (Old Town Pack and a couple of Galaxy kayaks) plus I fish. Personally, I think we all have a common interest in healthy, clean rivers and considerate use of them for recreation and conservation. The latter of course requires time, effort and...money.

    • @oliverlawer4694
      @oliverlawer4694 3 года назад

      @@MrPhumm absolutely! It’s an interesting one. Tho from what I can see the BCA’s position is welcoming to all river users, whereas the Anglian Trust’s position is only welcoming to their own. But I can also understand it. It’s like the residents in the Bernard Matthew’s house. For years they’ve enjoyed their garden being private. And now they’ve got a load of visitors staring in at them. You’re right, the law does need clarifying, but it’s unlikely the change anytime soon.

    Hi, what about the permit to launch a canoe or other personal water craft from ringland river gree? i just had a look at the ringland parish council page and it says you need to apply for one, and also need permit from them to fish, i tried getting in touch with them on the phone and nothing.

    • @wildernesspaddles8023
      @wildernesspaddles8023 3 года назад

      Yes. It’s £5 a year. You can get the permit here :) ringlandparishcouncil.com/Commoners-Rights--and--Access-to-Common-Land.php

    • @wildernesspaddles8023
      @wildernesspaddles8023 3 года назад

      Yes, I believe so. There is no information about this at the location, so unless you hear on the grapevine, it's hard to know sometimes what permits are required. Personally, I'm not sure why you would need a permit to launch, when families who use the same area for pinics and swimming do not need a permit, but such is life. Here is the link you need: ringlandparishcouncil.com/Commoners-Rights--and--Access-to-Common-Land.php
