Autumn has arrived and I, the midlander in the mountains, return to two wheels to explore the Hohewand and bring you glorious Autumn colours and views. This plateau is located a short drive from Vienna and is perfect for bikers and hikers who prefer a less strenuous walk in the gorgeous autumn sunshine. Join me on my journey, with new camera angles, before the BMW R75/6 has its winter break.
As a young air cadet I showed visitors around the Lanc at Blackpool airport, great fun sitting in the cockpit. We still used the radio sets as fitted to the Lancaster etc in our cadet HQ at Poulton 2459 those colored dials are easy to recall, talked to other cadet units across the UK.Sign offs to Fleetwood ususually ended by conforming a meet up later at the Hotel Charlie (High Cross Pub)
Hi, The building you enquired about is a pyrotechnic store & is from the airfields WW2 era. There is usually two of them normally not to far from the Control Tower. Thanks for posting this lovely video. Great to watch a video from someone who not only appreciates the history of the airfield but also the buildings as well. Excellent!! Strubby is thankfully still a great example of an old RAF station as your video excellently shows. Cheers, Steve an old airfield 'geek' ;)
Lovely to see so much remains. Cracking video.
Thanks Mike. All done on the hoof so to speak.
On a Staff Navigation Course at RAF Manby in 1970, all the flying took place at RAF Strubby
I knew it ! If I asked loudly enough I'd be lucky enough to get a view of my film from somebody who actually worked at RAF Strubby. Albeit on a course is academic, you were there. Your comment actually led me to another youtube channel the Royal Institute of Navigation which has two great videos from David Pike and David Broughton about the staff Navigation course. Sounds damn difficult, and lots of hard work, not too many nights in the mess drinking beer but plenty studying.
Lucky sod you got to have ago on one
Worth queing and for a great cause. Winner, winner chicken dinner.
I love a stream fair been to 3 this year, takes me back to being child again as soon as I smell the air, never was keen on the organs remind me of horror movies 😂 and make my head want to explode. I love the pops and whistles of the static engines.
Just wish I could thank again Rob Saxton, the man who owns the steam engine Freda. Hope somebody shows him this film.
Would have been nice to have seen / heard the old girl airborne. So important to restore and cherish this aircraft and in fact everything on site.
A lot depends on the airframes condition.
It's part of a ten year plan Marcus. Might overun a bit but I'm confident this lady will fly again. So many people are involved and I don't mean just financially. The ground crew that look after this old girl are a video in themselves and although I won't get the chance it's a film I'd love to make, the story of those who work on Just Jane. There are some real, and I mean real characters supporting this 'frame' as we used to say in the RAF !
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this well put together video, especially the touching tributes of the brave soles who went before us for us. Wouldn’t it be nice if some of those photos could been restored / replaced.
Agreed.
In 1969 I was with 156 Sqdn ATC at summer camp at RAF Manby, we spent the day at Strubby flying in Vickers Varsity’s over Lincolnshire and the North Sea at low level, a fantastic experience
Another comment from somebody there when the station was operational. Brilliant ! What an experience. Can you imagine what you'd have to pay for that now ? Not even sure if there is a Varsity still airworthy.
I spent my holidays here spotting at the end of the runway in 1969 and each year till it closed and at the national model aircraft championships just after it closed. I have a lot of photos of the Varsity’s and cine film and I also taped the aircraft in the circuit for hours which is great to listen to. There was a Britannia there on one occasion and the flight checker Argosies RAE 125s and JPs and Dominies from Manby. There was a Varsity fuselage WL622 on the dump with a Hastings.
If you get the chance to get that film uploaded to RUclips Graham people would be extremely interested to see it. I'd offer to help but I made this film whilst on holiday back in the UK a 6 years away. I now live in Austria so unfortunately can't help. However you are sitting on a bit of history there.
Cracking video and well worth a visit, ive been going their for over 30 years now and it just gets better,i also played my small part in getting the Mosquito from Elvington to East Kirkby.
You can't leave me hanging there Mike ! What do you do to help them relocate the Mosquito ?
@@vonhewittfilms2668 Hello mate, sorry its taken a while to get back to you,i picked up most of the support frames and a box of things all that were needed to move the Mosquito. I picked up the load from ST Albans and took them up to Elvington for Tony the owner of the Mosquito. A great time for me. Take care.
I enjoyed your video. I'm right in to ww11. All the history about our brave boys and girls too. Look forward to seeing your next video. I live close to tees side airport. Back in ww11 . It was Middleton st George. The Canada fly from there. Ghost squadron.
Thank you for your comment. This film was made very quickly whilst on holiday back in England. No idea when I'll be back there to make another airfield film but more films from Austria (where I now live) will be along soon.
Just Jane is Gorgous and it would be great to see her Fly but I do prefer her as a Taxi Queen , the Merlin run up was Awesome ..
I really hope they get this old girl flying as itll be lovely to see two in the air again over the UK
Thank you Peter for your comment. When I visited East Kirkby I heard that although the project may overrun from the original ten year plan all being well she'll fly again one day. If I'm alive and available I'll be there !
@@vonhewittfilms2668 .... They're doing an absolutely terrific job on her and I know and appreciate it's with limited funds it's just the return to flight always seems to be just around the corner every time you read up on it .... Still the main things she's being well looked after and repaired to a proper standard
Why are you blurring out the edges of the video just like the BBC ??? I have a whole screen to view things , absolutely pointless !
Blurred it out simply as a screen filler because it was mobile phone footage. But now I've been compared to the BBC, I'll be quite reticent to use it in future !
A nicely put together and informative video. For us RUclips film makers it's not always easy to remember to film and take photographs in landscape orientation, I've done it myself on occasion 🙄
Thank you. It was just supposed to be a little taste of Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre for those who had never visited. I'm truely overwhelmed by the number of views.
Only just discovered this channel and I can't wait for more airfield videos...
Hi Andy, I'm terribly sorry but actually these videos were just what I did on holiday. I'm English, but now live in Austria and I make videos here about local things. I wish I could make more airfield films, I really do, but I don't live in the UK anymore. However there is some silver lining....I've found your great channel and subscribed. Thank you for your videos.
There is another a/c being restored at East Kirkby. A very rare HP Hampton in one of the side hangers. It`s been on hold for several years now. If you search for Neville Wheeldon on youtube, he does a weekly video update of the restoration, and in his 250+ playlist, has covered some little known areas of JJ and East Kirkby. For example, he did a video on the German searchlights in your film.
Thanks David. I must admit I did actually see Neville Wheeldon that day and spoke to him ! It was an absolute pleasure but we spoke more about his camera set up than anything else. The German searchlights were a real surprise to me....how they got to East Kirkby. Anyway thank you so much for watching this film as I very nearly didn't publish it as I felt it wasn't good enough. It was just a run and gun film from things I did on my holiday, the next one was about a steam engine and I hope a few people enjoy that too.
I have passed it by many times on the way to Mablethorpe. Never realised it was in use until 1972. Not much evidence of more modern accommodation or facilities. I wonder if the personnel were accomodated elsewhere and it was more of a satellite airfield? I was in the Fleet Air Arm in the sixties and also did a stint with the RAF at Watton/Cottesmore and the buildings at Strubby certainly look wartime era but most airfields were updated around the sixties but Strubby looks as if it was left??
Just did some quick research and indeed all personnel were accommodated at RAF Manby hence the lack of more modern buildings. That small building with the shelving could have been for the boxes holding the Cartridge starters? Canberras certainly used them.
That was the point I was trying to get across in the film so thanks for acknowledging it. It really is a piece of history and I forgot to mention Woodys bar at the caravan park is site of the old telephone exchange.
Thank you for the info. I didn't know that but a quick google search suggests they were called Coffman engine starters and you're quite right the Rolls Royce Avon engine in the Canberra used them. Canberra's were sadly before my time in the RAF but I've seen these starters , which I knew as shotgun starters, used to start a tractor.
@@vonhewittfilms2668 Generally any small building sitting on its own held something flammable or dangerous. If it is near the dispersal chances are that is what it was used for. Or possibly ammunition. It wasn't a storage building more for use on the line and they would be kept on an ammunition dump in blastproof buildings. Yes I was on 360 sqdn at Watton/Cottesmore and the cartridges were quite large at app 4" diameter and app 12" long. I handled quite a few and also changed a few starters as they used to have a fuseable link and you didn't know they had failed until the next start up.
Thanks for the reply sorry I'm late getting back to you. I knew their would be a mind of information out there in the comments if I asked, cheers.
Caffe has been moved to tent and shop is in a converted ww2 shelter as of 14 of September for refurbishment of original
Cheers for the update 👍🏻
thanks for the tour of Strubby....whilst i have a couple of accounts from there in my files, i have to admit that i experienced nothing or nobody in spirit when i was taken there back in 2012, i found it a very tranquil airfield, well worth a look around though - C
It is tranquil Chris, and I love the fact that the Stubbs family allow people to come and visit the memorial and see the buildings. Thank you for your comment 👍🏻
Hey Craig, it was so lovely to see you this year again! It was a bit of an abrupt end unfortunately. Later I couldn't find you anymore. Will you come to visit us at the Kelten Tage in August (24.&25.)?
Yes Kathi I certainly will. 👍🏻
Hi Kathi, sadly I now can't be at Keltentag due to an injury but please write to me at vonhewittfilms@gmail.com and I'll explain all ! Kind Regards Craig.
OMG!!!! You best have been wearing lederhosen for this edit! A NAFFI Spar 😅, where are the subtitles?
It's not Midlander in the Mountains its on my German speaking films play list. However if you click subtitles and change auto generate German to English you might understand something. But it wasn't made with my usual audience in mind. Just enjoy the scenery and incredibly good film making 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best Film 🎥 ever!!! Congratulations Craig🎉🎉🎉
Thank V.M. for your comment 😘 Best produced so far but lots of room for improvement.
Very nice and informative video. As a Trattenbach-Nebenwohnsitzer we will definitely follow your paths!
Danke !!! 👍🏻

Got to say it's not for me, despite being half Celt, but each to their own 😂. Another good video mate, I'm sure that there were MANY sore heads the next day!
I can't please all the viewers all the time lol 😆. However I enjoyed myself and I learned a lot. If I could have filmed it with a movie crew it would of looked much better but handheld has its charm. But if I had a film crew I'd be professional.
Hey Craig, thank you for capturing all those wonderful moments! This way I could enjoy the games and fire too ❤ Can't wait to watch more of your videos and learn about all the amazing places around me 😁
Heeeyyy Superstar ! Without people like you and your Dad I can't make these films, it was great to chat. I absolutely loved Keltenfest again this year and I'll be back next year....it was an absolute pleasure to meet you and your family.
Thanks for another film opening a window into your world, it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves. You really captured the atmosphere and feel of the event, just like you did with the Winter festival a few months ago.
I'll keep trying to improve it Ian. You can watch you tube videos all day about....how to make you tube videos but there is no substitute for experience. I learn everyime.
Great video Craig. Looks like a fun couple of days. Keep the vids coming 👍
What a bonkers thing in the middle of Austria!!! Maybe we’ll come and see it next year, I love a festival!
This place would be soooooo you Kirsty !
Another very insightful well put together and presented video.
Mate....I had a ball !!! Thank you. 😊
Nicely put together video, really enjoyed that. Brought back childhood memories seeing that Simca 1501 (the dark red saloon) in its natural state with the bonnet up. My dad had two, a bile green hatchback which didn't like the damp, followed by a Dijon mustard estate with a handbrake by the steering column poor Dad kept bashing his knee on. I rarely asked for lift.
PMSL ! Mercedes Benz used the classic handbrake by the steering column for years and still do on the Vito Minibus 😉. Although I must say the Simca 1501 has an appeal in regard of its looks alone. Thank for saying it was nicely put together. It was thrown together really as an exercise in quick short filmmaking. Everytime you go out you learn. I spoke to the owner of K.I.T.T. on Sunday and he was thrilled so I spread a little happiness baby.
Knight Industries Two Thousand if you weren’t aware 🤦🏻♂️😆 one of my favourite TV shows growing up. I enjoyed this but I’m not a fan of fake cars ie not kept original. Some beautiful cars in this bunch. Once again a lovely put together video 👍🏼
I get your point but Marcus Ulm has poured his heart and soul into this recreation and it is impressive. We have to remember K.I.T.T. wasn't real either lol !
@@vonhewittfilms2668 you make a good point and I applaud his efforts it’s just more the none originality around cars that a true car enthusiast would notice.
Short and sweet, looking forward to seeing more classics soon, ta
I was expected a jacket comment.....yes the concept of Run and Gun is exactly that. Cheers 👍🏻
Honest and genuine that will do for me, it would be hard for me to leave such a place. I have visited countless little gems like this over the years. Another well put together informative video .
Thank you Marcus I will endeavour to get the content flowing a bit more frequently but I must say this has been the best film so far as viewing figures are concerned. Over 150 views in the first 48 hours which is terrible by most people's standards but great for a little channel like mine. Thank you 👍🏻
I am biased because I love a car museum, but it was really interesting, could spend hours there examining the various vehicles, especially the Jaaaaags and Americana, as well as the beer bottle collection and the appealing posters😂
I don't reckon bias towards classic iron is a bad thing 😉 I did spend hours there and still didn't feel I had done it justice but I wanted to give the casual viewer a general overview of the museum. Thank you for your kind comment !
Another excellent informative and entertaining film Craig, thank you. Who'd have thought there'd be a motor museum where such a unique collection exists in a little town south of Vienna? Really interesting, well put together and presented, and a soundtrack that perfectly suits and reflects what is being shown at the time. Glad to see you looking so well and living your dream.
The place is a hidden gem Ian and I was surprised how much time I was filming there on my own ! I tried to emphasize the passion of the founder, I'd have loved to have had a beer with him. Everything has its time and it would be very hard to get a collection like that together again. It would be great to see the Graef und Stift recommissioned and back driving but even to be allowed to film it was a great experience, its a very large imposing car.
Another interesting series! Great museum with great classic cars! We have never been there. Maybe soon.
High praise indeed from a filmmaker of your standing. Claudia I thank you !
You voice is relaxing 😁
So long as it doesn't put people to sleep that's great lol 👍🏻😂
I'm binge watching! Thoroughly enjoyed this one as well, particuarly how you set the scene, explained the format and then covered the race. TV interviewers could learn a lot from your format, you asked a question and allowed him to answer and followed up with a question leading on from that. The rider's eye view was superb, and the atmosphere was captured really well when it got dark. Really, really good.
Thank you for your comments, glad you liked it. I learned quite a bit about audio during that video...🤣
I thoroughly enjoyed that, thank you. There's a similar nightime woodland walk in Windsor Great Park, I don't know how commonplace they are these days with the advent of LED programmable lights. The music to the fountains was like a fireworks display, wonderful. You're right in your assessment of it as a winter light show and I particularly liked your use of slow motion in Blumenwald, gave it an ethereal quality. As for "After the mushrooms, things got particularly weird", well, we can all relate to that! Great editing, really well presented. Thanks again Craig, looking forward to more videos next year, wishing you well.
Thank very much. 👍🏻Let's hope I can improve and make films more regularly in 2023. Happy New year 🎉
The music which overlayed the video worked particularly well and the presenter continued to mix being informative, fun and relaxed in front of camera throughout. Another very enjoyable video. Well done.
Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am "here for that" 😂, entertaining and informative again, microphone /sound seems better, I enjoyed the music you overplayed and the mushroom trip too👍
I worked hard on sound this time so your comments are really appreciated ! It's a massive learning curve. Making a 20 minute video on your iPhone is one thing.....lugging 30lbs of camera equipment round a park all day is something else lol 😆
The Fountain of Light is amazing!👍
.....and I thought leaving the whole light display in and not cutting it down might br too much for people. So thank you. 😊
Yes, a very nice jacket 👍🏴
They always wear better secondhand....lol
Nice jacket 😉
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You are welcome Karen, more to come.
Expected to see you joining in, maybe next time. Congrats on passing the 100 mark, 1000 incoming✊🏻, more importantly keep them coming and enjoy it👍, P.S. I thought you said that it didn't rain much there🤔🤣
Yes ! It suddenly occurred to me that both films this summer have been rainy 🌧 But as you know its not always like that 😂😁 Fear not I'll keep them coming. 👍🏻
Didn’t fancy joining in then? Marcus’s feature heavily in your videos which is nice. Not forgetting the “if dad says it’s ok it’s ok “ rule again something I support 😁
The Mayor has 'told' me I have to run next year.....oh boy !
