I think its fine to ask about someone's heritage or ancestry in the right way and if its ciear that the person being asked is open to share. If the person questioning is forceful and using out of date styles of speech it might come across the wrong way and that person should stop enquiring. At the same time if someone is asking questions forcefully and in a possibly unfriendly manner, the person being asked may have the right to be offended....but not for just being enquired in a friendly way. I would only ask personal questions of someone if i felt they were open to it and I'd be careful with my language and not be persistent. In my experience, some older UK people can use out of date language and attitudes using words that aren't acceptable in today's world, that come across as borderline inhospitable or divisive and seem to reflect an old attitude of colonialism which isn't how modern people see the world. It really is true, that older people can be like this and I've just gone quiet and stared blankly when some particular words of historic usage are suddenly being used again, to describe other people. The person using them didnt even seem to be aware these words are unacceptable in todays world or even think they could be offensive. On the other side, even I've been given the same treatment by others when I'm choosing my words very carefully and respectfully, as if I'm automatically a person of similar nature because of my own heritage.

I work in petroleum, I travel between Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania a lot, there are still Chinese owned restaurants that still don't allow black people inside on the African continent, if you want to talk about actual racists just look at the Chinese.

Lol this apartment is bigger than my American triple decker apartment built in 1930 was only 900 sq ft. The largest apartment I've had was a converted condominium. It was 1950 sq ft. Originally, it was a mill building built in 1908.
