    I think the use of an automatic transmission is a bad idea for standard fitment as they require extra cooling that may not be available because of a fire present a couple of metres away. Bad enough that we once had a electrically controlled transfer case go all neutrals and the truck get caught in a burn over.

    • @davidwarren4569

      Yes. Those AWD auto transmissions are a real problem. The transfer box for 4wd only have about 1.5 litres and 3 have failed here in nsw RFS at a cost of $70000 each.

      Honestly I don't find them useful in forest fires especially because of the hose you can carry and because if the fire front is a little more intense you can't get close and extinguish fire. Ultra high pressure is not that good for forest fires, is also not too safe in case you accidentally point it to someone or to you and it can happen. The best to have is CAFS and in my personal opinion a combined pressure pump. it saves fuel on the truck and is the best of both worlds. I Have been fighting fires since 87 and I have built a few interesting special forest fire trucks that work and they are powerful not like this unit.

    For years, I have been pretty critical over the crapiness of appliances here in QLD but I must say, this truck has finally hit a point of being much better designed. The only thing leaving me lacking is the choice of small GAAM 125 and motor. The idea of a town truck and a bush truck helps with options for brigades. The biggest hurdle is many brigades are told what they are going to get without options, I have sat there in so many meetings where AD's and the RM flat-out refused anything but bloody Danger Rangers.

    • @bentheguru4986
      @bentheguru4986 3 месяца назад

      As mentioned, those deaths have little to do with the need for FOPS. Without kicking off a huge, insenitive argument, FMS training used to include identifying dangerous trees as well as stay away from large trees either burnt, on fire of heat stressed. Training over the years has gone to the dogs and many brigades suffer from poor training and support.

      Seen the findings No preventative measures known in modern fire fighting truck's could have saved them sadly(30 to 40 tones can't be stopped), but we should always try to make as strong as possible trucks, but then we must carry less water 💧 when im fighting fire i want lots of water and a safe and slow driver

    I like what they've done with the pump system - the pressure, the flow, the control panel and remote, self-priming drafting, operational time, water quantity - good build. And, apart from having to set up the wiring to the base vehicle, they have a slip-on module. Very nice execution for a Proof-of-concept.

    Can someone tell me something,I watched the fire at tawoomba burn for days before it got out of control while there was only 40 trucks or so active when I have seen up to 100 trucks active at other times, wouldn't it make more sense to have more of them active all the time? I know this isn't a volunteer issue because there's enough full time fire employees to get more vehicles active and location can't be an issue with this because trucks have wheels,why why aren't more trucks active and only a couple more are out there than how many fires there are almost all of the time, please have more trucks active it doesn't make sense people are dying and loosing their homes

      Hi A J! We reached out to Thermaguard, the manufacturers of the curtains and here is their response: "The short answer is no, the exterior curtains have not been burnover tested like Thermaguard’s in-cab curtains have. External curtains and sprays are strictly an additional measure for bushfire safety - effective in a controlled/laboratory environment, but for reasons listed in this link www.thermaguard.com.au/blog/our-blog/why-in-cab-fire-curtains-are-the-most-critical-com/ the risk of catastrophic failure is unacceptable. In-cab CSIRO/Mogo burnover tested shields are still the #1 tried and tested bushfire protection systems."

    From us at Berserker Fire Service this is a major step forward to keeping fire fighters safe. One thing we would like to say is that we had the twin impellor on our unit and we actually replaced it with a cast iron wet end pump kit from Pumps Australia in WA and we have much better pressure with the big single impellor with pressures up to 150psi. We would be more than happy to show you its capability when you are in Rockhampton
