    460's are cool, just thirsty AF. Dad had a '78 LTD wagon with a 460 4V which was pretty healthy for getting that big wagon rolling quickly. I now have a '90 F250 460 big block that's been a solid runner but seems at times to be an outright gutless turd uphill in 5th gear on factory sized tires. The 460guys injection system seems to be the only real option to stay EFI which I personally despise and I'd prefer a carburetion conversion with my Predator carburetor which I may do otherwise I plan to sell the truck once my '85 6.9l IDI is swuared away. A 460 with aluminum heads and intake come out to roughly 50lbs more than a small block Ford engine. Definitely worth the swap IMO.

    Working on 460 swapping a 79 Bronco, will 460 truck manifolds work without notching the top of the frame on passenger side?

    • @BlackLabGarage

      @@BradyWeatherford Yes! The truck manifolds don’t kick out on the passenger side like the car manifolds do. Plus the truck manifolds use a bigger exhaust pipe flange than the car manifolds do so you can put bigger pipes on them easier.

    I put the FE in trucks 460s have always been slugs. I don’t know why, but the 390 car engine and especially a 410 just had a zing to them.

    • @BlackLabGarage
      @BlackLabGarage 9 дней назад

      If it's a stock low compression 460 which 95% of them out there are, then yes the 460 is a disappointing gas hog. But when the compression is raised on the 460 and the exhaust side of the head is opened up, a 390 can not hold a light to them with pulling. I'm saying this and I own a 390 that I built and it's a great engine and pulls very good. But when a 460 built right, they are very hard to beat!

    I enjoy the hell out of your videos sir. My dad and i have run big block fords for years in our old 1979 F350 wrecker with a 440 Holmes bed. Weve been through many of the 460's and a couple 429's. We always had better experience with the 429. We would always put the 429 timing set on the 460 engine. Im just curious what your thoughts are on the 429 engines. Be interesting hearing your opinion on the 429 vs th 460. Keep up the good work friend. God bless JM in Greers Ferry AR

    • @BlackLabGarage
      @BlackLabGarage 9 дней назад

      I like the 429 engines. Pretty much most all of the 429's you would find are high compression whereas most of the 460's you find are the later lower compression engines. That right there makes a big difference between the two engines. Now if the compression ratios are the same between the two engines, the 429 will rev up easier but the 460 has more low end grunt. But both are really good engines.

      @@BlackLabGarage Thanks! I really enjoy your videos. I have the confidence now to use the 97 efi 460 in my truck without trying to find earlier heads and intake. I have a few things still to figure out. I will be using this as a tow vehicle at about 6,000 feet elevation. I am looking at flat top pistons to gain some compression back and will need to figure out if stock iron exhaust manifolds are suitable for an engine that probably will not see rpms above 4000.

    • @BlackLabGarage
      @BlackLabGarage 9 дней назад

      @ that 97 engine will have around 8.5-8.8:1 compression from the factory. I haven’t dealt with high altitude engines much but a set of flat top pistons would probably make it too high. The pistons you have now are dished but they are a smaller dish than the old models and they have a taller compression height so the piston comes much closer to the top of the block. Flat tops have a little lower compression height. You have to have the deck of the block milled to get the flat top pistons to the top of the deck. Just something to think about because the closer to the top of the block you can get the piston the better quench you will have which means more detonation resistance. Would a set of headers help? They would help but the truck manifolds will work fine for what you are doing. The truck manifolds breathe a lot better than the car manifolds do.

      @@BlackLabGarage Thanks for that advice. I suspect knowing that will save me some serious money. I started thinking ahead about pistons because I bought this truck not running and the rear spark plug on the passenger side was seriously oil fouled. That cylinder might run the hottest as it right against the firewall in there with all the exhaust. If I'm lucky it might be valve seal or guide or something and not a failed piston or rings. I just need to pull the heads and see what is there.

      While they will have the thermactor bumps in them, some have the holes and some do not. It depends on what area of the country the vehicle was going to as to whether or not the holes were drilled or not.

    Some tough love here. I wiped out a 351W flat Comp cam in 10 minutes on a professionally built engine. Also I broke in a Thumper flat cam for 30 minutes on a 400. It ran good but I took the intake off to inspect the lifters and one had slightly rounded edge. All the preload and springs, etc was correct. Went roller on the Windsor. The 400 is still in the thinking process. Howards cams is fairly close to me and I might give that route a shot. Good video.

    Great video. I swapped EFI to a carb on my 1994 F250 with the 5.8 Windsor. I even put a mechanical fuel pump on the motor using an older timing cover and the Mustang 5.0 reverse rotation water pump with the round holes. I left the factory in-tank electric fuel pump and run on a switch when it sits for a while to prime the carb. The mechanical pump will pull fuel through the electric pump otherwise. I used an Edelbrock Performer intake and blocked the heat crossover ports with gray epoxy. I don't use the truck often but it runs great.
