I started this channel as a method to share some video clips of projects that I work on with family members. I decided to make one of those videos public and had an overall positive response to it. Since that time I have grown the channel and am really enjoying the process of creating informative, beginner-friendly carving demonstrations with a lot of helpful tips that I have picked up over my 25+ years of carving. I also showcase some more advanced projects for those that are further along in their carving journey and are either, like me and just enjoy watching carving almost as much as carving, or are maybe looking for some different ideas.
Back in the mid to late 1990's I was introduced to wood carving by my dad and have enjoyed it off and on ever since. In the last 2-3yrs I have spent more time with a knife in a piece of wood and seem to be claiming that as my favorite past time.
If you like what you see here leave a comment or a like. Thanks and enjoy!

Thank you for keeping your viewers supporting interest in our craft 👍
My pleasure 😊
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride 😂
Thanks for the interesting and informative video on something I've had trouble with and that's strength in my hands. I'm just beginning...again! Ha. I used to carve years ago and found it to be very relaxing.
That's great that you are getting back into carving! I too, find it very relaxing. Thanks for watching!
Congrats on the 1.5k!! =)
Thanks Johnny! Hopefully I can get my house addition done and make some more videos soon.
Whoop whoop. I never win these. But good luck everyone
I got your entry! Thanks for joining in the fun.
Love it hope i win 🎉❤i sent message
I got your entry. It was a good one. Thanks for watching and joining in the fun.
Love your video's!!! Thank you for the give-a-way. Good Luck everyone. Congrats on 1.5K+
Thank you Scott.
So what your saying is, eat more cereal? Edit:Website looking good.
When it comes to recommending what to eat...I 1000% think the carnivore diet is what humans should be following. I bought the cereal just to get the box for this video.
I see a Great Value sponsorship coming up soon.
new one on me Steve ..Now I know some people swear by glass sharpening and stropping ....But I suppose a sturdy material with compound on it can work fine
I don't remember for sure where I originally heard about using cereal box cardboard. It is something that my dad mentioned quite a few years ago that he read somewhere.
Very cool. I have a piece of bark on the way and was wondering if I could carve a piece of it by knife enjoyably. Thanks for the tips.
Your welcome. Thank you for watching!
If it works for you then it is perfect. Good job Steve.
Thanks DanO
Good ideas. Thanks!
Your welcome, thanks for watching!
Great finish Steve. Take care of your back and it will take care of you.
Thank you, I will. Thanks for watching!
Ohhhhhh. Glasses for your carving ... to wear.
Yep. Thanks for watching.
Awesome video Steve!!! Thanks.
Thank you!
😎👍
Thank you for the lesson Steve ,,good carving
Thanks Gene! That means more than you know when it comes from a guy that has done so much for the hobby. I appreciate it.
Try olive oil, it works great for a finish, you can paint over it , and it will close checking cracks.
Thanks for the feedback
Greetings from Utah! This is a helpful video, Steve. Thank you!
Thank you Greg, I appreciate it!
Very cool
Thank you.
The water makes since. We use to put oak lumber in the pond over night. It was a lot easier to use.
Thanks for watching.
Great video ,Thanks for sharing .❤
Thanks for watching, and commenting.
Thanks for sharing! Do you find it easier carving the rough of the arm attached to the main piece/body rather than carving it detached and then glue it on?
There are times where I will carve a portion of the add on piece prior to attaching it. Doing so can make it easier to handle, however, if I carve it after it's attached it helps me "see" How it works with the main piece. If I am carving from a pattern that has been proven to work I am more likely to carve more before attaching. Thank you for the question.
Nice project, can't wait to see how you made the eye glasses.
Thank you. I actually didn't record making the glasses (not sure why), but I will make another pair to show the process. Thanks for watching
Where can I find the first video I only see 2 thru 5
Hello. I am not sure why it isn't showing up for you. If you are on my channel page you should be able to find it in the videos tab. You can also look in the Playlist tab. There is a Playlist for this series and they are also in the Wood Carving Playlist. Hopefully this helps you find it.
I really appreciate this video. Thank you. I plan to start early to try to create a number of these as Christmas holiday gifts. Shaun, Chorley Lancashire UK
Glad it was helpful!
Great carve Steve ..good likeness and thank you for sharing your talent with us
Thank you for the kind words Gene!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
I wonder if keeping your carving in a plastic bag in between carrying sessions. Use the water and alcohol spray. But store your work piece in a plastic bag.
I think that would be helpful. You could also store a damp paper towel in the bag with it. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice video Steve! I'm going to mention it (and your channel) in the next episode of Wood Carving Weekly.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
@@S.Hunter My pleasure Steve! Tell me about your video setup. What kind of camera are you using? Are you using a tripod, a harness, or what do you use to hold your camera?
@whittling I am currently using a GoPro Hero 12 Black camera and have been trying different mounting options. I have an adjustable wall mounted boom with a ring light that I modified to mount the GoPro in the center of it. I use that quite often. I also have a GoPro mounting bracket on the front edge of my desk that I use from time to time, it's what I used for this last video. The other mounting that I use is actually a shooting tripod that I use when deer hunting. I found it to be quite handy. It is a Primos brand trigger stick gen3. It came with a 1/4-20 mount that I have attached a GoPro mount to. The nice thing about it is the legs are a tube in tube design that traps air in them making the act like pneumatic cylinders. There is a trigger just under the mounting surface that opens a valve to the legs and allows you to freely extend, retracts or angle all of the legs simultaneously. It operates super smooth and allows me to position the camera effortlessly. For the rotating progress shots I have another GoPro mount on my desk in front of a small turntable. I carve a few minutes and then place the carving on the turntable to record 30sec of thar then carve more....rinse and repeat. The GoPro works OK, but I am considering adding a second camera. Always trying to figure it out!
@@S.Hunter Excellent! Thanks for the details. I've been struggling with staying in the frame during some of my carving videos and I think your videos (including the editing) are top notch! 👍
I love this so much, never seen this info anywhere
Thank you. Thanks for watching
looks good! and it definitely makes me want to source some cottonwood bark. Would definitely enjoy seeing some more bark carving.
Thank you.
Very well done!
Thank you very much!
Thank you Steve great video new subscriber
Thanks for the sub!
Wish I could see the Detail better maybe a close up
Thanks for watching. I had a lighting issue. I will make another version of this video soon.
Great channel. Thanks
Thank you. Thanks for watching
great images Steve and carving
Thank you.
Nice tutorial, but it's a shame the lighting is all blown out such that we can't see any of the detail during the carving - especially the bits like the eyes and the feet.
Noted. I saw that after recording it. Sorry about that. I will make sure that's better on the next one. Thank you for watching and the feedback!
How about something a little more advanced. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and videos. 👍😎
@@stephenwhittier6439 I have a pretty awesome project in mind that would be more advanced...stay tuned!
@@stephenwhittier6439Hey! Some of us are just starting out here!
I still plan on creating beginner friendly videos as well. I enjoy all types of carving from quick whittling easier pieces to complex scenes with multiple pieces, as well as practical or utility carving. Last year I used my carving tools to make part of a toilet paper holder for my camper! At any time if there is a type of project, or method, or if you need help figuring something out with carving please let me know. I will do my best to come up with a video for it. Thanks for watching and the conversation!
Nice to see something a little different carved with different challenges. I love a nice little bearded guy -- heck, I am a nice (not so little) bearded guy, but it's nice to branch out into other subjects.
I agree. My favorite type of carving to do is a scene that tells a bit of a story. They are all fun. In my next video I carve a little basic owl. 1.5" tall. Thank you for watching!
Some of you may have noticed a glitch in the matrix. I published essentially this same video earlier and there were some views and a great conversation started. Now the title is slightly different and those original comments are gone. That's my fault! Shortly after publishing the original video i noticed some video quality problems that i couldn't leave as it was. So I pulled the other video down, fixed (the best i could) the video issues and published it again. So i apologize to the folks that offered the original comments.
Thank you Steve ..Great lesson and teaching ..Thank you for sharing
Thanks Steve for the video on sharpening. However I would like to see some sharpening and honing by hand instead of on the power strop. I do not have a power strop.
Thanks Gene.
@@robertcash7557 Robert he showed you the hand sharpening strop method by hand at first ...
@robertcash7557 Thanks for watching Robert. There were a couple of sections where I demonstrated, however I could have shown more. Great feedback, and stay tuned....
Wow I love how you film these lengthy, explaining things and extremely detailed especially how u show the finished steps in corner pic. Hard to find ones with complete projects being as this patient! Cant wait to show my wife as a beginner carver. New subscriber ❤ 👊🏼
Thank you Daniel. I really enjoy making the videos but am always a bit torn between longer and shorter content. Not everyone is interested in the longer videos. It's nice to hear that it helps you out.
That turned out beautiful. Nice job.
Thank you.
👍😎🤗
Thanks
