Self-driving technologies offered by Tesla, Waymo, Cruise, and others are impressive but they beg the question: what problem are they solving? Since Waymo just began testing here in Atlanta, let's discuss if self-driving technologies will _finally_ fix traffic. Waymo has just begun testing here in Atlanta, Georgia, and I stalked and chased them around for weeks to get just a few seconds of B-ro...

Atlanta has Midtown, Bucktown, and also Perimeter - Sandy Spring. These are newer and more bustling commercial areas. Downtown Atlanta has never been The Move. Atlanta sprawl vs a tighter city core in Chicago Loop might be due to zoning.

Ayy an Atlanta transit channel! I live in Portland now, but I moved to the west coast in 2021 after living in ATL my whole life. Lived in SF for a bit. Obviously things are a little better over here, but I'm still holding out for hope for my home city to seize on the massive opportunity for improvement! Not just new transit, but improving the existing transit. I got around without a car in Atlanta for years, but it just sucked. I think the thing that made it frustrating was that I knew it didn't have to

I worked in downtown Atlanta in the late 90s and early 00s and it was full of people, small businesses, and action during the day and evenings 7 days a week. I went back to downtown I believe last year and the place was completely dead. I understand a lot of cities have become like this since Covid. But still...Atlanta seemed like another level of dead. I was in downtown Denver a few weeks ago and it felt so lively and active. Speaking of Denver, in 1990 Atlanta had 45 miles of rail transit while Denver and Dallas had 0 each. Today, Atlanta has 51 miles while Denver has 113 and Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex has 177. With such horrible traffic, metro Atlanta should be ashamed of itself.

Atlanta native here. Downtown Atlanta has been this was since at least the Urban Renewal era beginning in the 1960s. Most of the major buildings downtown - the CNN Center/Omni Complex, World Congress Center, Apparel Mart/Merchandise Mart, and numerous hotels built by the late architect John Portman Jr., (i.e. Hyatt Regency, Peachtree Plaza, Marriott Marquis) were sold as a silver bullet solution for downtown's woes during the era in which they were built. So much of the historic fabric was lost during that time period and what remains consists of canned, corporate businesses marketed to tourists and business travelers. So, yeah, this is not a new problem.

Yes I live near the eastside beltline and I do not want the rail. I don't see a single successful example of a well-maintained and safe public transit in this city. I'd love to use Marta, but I can't because each time I am harassed or I'm witness to an incident. Unless it's for a concert or sports game, using the Marta system feels very unsafe. I believe it will be more of the same with the beltline rail.

One issue not adequately covered is the I-75/85 connector. Between the Mercedes stadium / park / aquarium on the West and the Connector on the East, the effective downtown area is relatively small. Subtract Georgia State University, the large hotels, and the government buildings and it is tiny compared to something like Chicago or Seattle downtown. Yes, as mentioned here, there are actions that can be taken but it'll never match these other downtowns. That said, Midtown and Buckhead are thriving. They'd be considered downtown-like in most US cities.

Look at also the big flop of Brutalism. It was created to try to add more communal spaces, but nobody wants to sit in a concrete courtyard, on a concrete bench with concrete walls on 3 sides of you. There's a lot of leftover structures/spaces that embody this architecture style inside cities, so in general they are inherently less pleasing for community living. We're just now getting around to figuring out that suburbs are also the spawn of Satan. It's a learning process, and an expensive one at that

IMO United States is a very amazing place. All cities have something special. Crime is everywhere but it can be more controlled here. Out the country is a different beast. We get to see these countries under the privilege of US wealth. Outside of those resorts are nothing put poverty! I live New Orleans, Chicago, to all the small cities in between. United States is the land of opportunities. It's hard to grow at times but not impossible. I love the United States. We just need to clean it up a bit.
