    In dense cities with good public transit like Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and NYC car ownership is an expensive headache. I live in Center City Philly and haven't driven a car in 12 years. I walk or take transit everywhere and the amount of money and time I've saved by not owning a car is HUGE! A car-free lifestyle can be wonderful, and I think many Americans would agree if only they could/would experience it.

    I guarantee if they expanded the public transit network particularly the passenger rail and MARTA lines, the city of Atlanta businesses would see a massive increase in profits. Nobody really wants to hangout in the city anymore just because there is so much traffic and its a hassle. Especially if there was a connection from Kennesaw and Marietta where the 2nd largest college in the state is.

      Pretty broad statement and one that I beg to disagree with. There's lots of dead space in the city and those dead spaces are chock-full of cheap all-day parking. Most areas with expensive parking are near to a train station and those trainstations connect directly to subsidized park-n-rides.
      That's me speaking as an in-town resident, but I often travel (by train) to adjacent areas like Reynoldstown, Doraville, and Buckhead where I can also see plenty of cheap & easy parking within walking distance of a station

    • @heysilly1341
      @heysilly1341 5 месяцев назад

      @@MasterChaoko ok but please remember that I said that the empty parking lots aren’t safe. From the scams to the robberies, the “cheap” parking lots are empty for a reason. There isn’t enough safe parking in Atlanta.

    • @KCH55
      @KCH55 5 месяцев назад

      @@heysilly1341 Yes, but there is such a thing as too many parking spots, look at malls to give an example, when they were built they've over built parking. Even the heyday of malls they were slow down times where half of the parking wouldn't be there and people forget that when they're like.
      I actually think it creates a vicious cycle because when people see an empty parking lot or a near empty parking lot they think it must be, not be a place to shop.
      I watched a lot of nostalgia mall channels and I noticed some commonality people weirdly I'm not one of those people cuz I hated crowds growing up and still do, actually liked the business of malls. Malls tend to build parking lots for the holidays or back in their peak era. It's not that they need that much parking on a regular basis. It was just the idea. Well, we'll need it when we need it. Like I said, it might seem strange to say that because we tend to think there's not enough parking, but that's usually because when we show up it's in peak hours or times where we want to go or when it's near holidays. Instead, parking should only be built as you need it on a regular basis, not for the exception.

    It's a tough sell for a lot of sun-belt cities. You need a car because things are so spread out, things are so spread out because everybody needs a place to put their car. Breaking that cycle in Atlanta takes courage and forward thinking. I would love to see some content that calls out specific Atlanta City Counsel members doing the right and wrong thing.

    • @nathandaven
      @nathandaven  7 месяцев назад +5

      It's definitely a tough sell, but Atlanta's probably the best sell out of all of them. MARTA is very usable, especially on weekdays if you live or work near a rail station, or a frequent bus. In a future video I'm gonna go over TODs, we really need to focus new development near rail stations. Overall think as traffic gets worse and worse more and more people will start choosing alternatives, and developers will follow, it's just a slow process unfortunately.
      Some council members are awesome like Jason Dozier, I believe he spearheaded the ordinance I covered in the video -- but honestly its the NIMBYs that are more counterproductive than the council in a lot of areas. Half of it is education and awareness, I grew up in the burbs here, and it took me a long time after moving to the city to realize that there are other ways to get around, and a lot of the stigma I grew up hearing was pure dogwhistle and misperception. thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @williaml6307
    @williaml6307 7 месяцев назад +4

    Feeling called out ngl as someone who lives on top of a car parked in a parking podium in Midtown... it's an interestingly vicious cycle where higher rent means people more likely to have a car which means less people using transit and more pressure to build parking in the new buildings. people like me taking space in the only areas of Atlanta where its viable to live car free but also where I end up using my car for a lot of trips anyways (maybe less than half though? havent done the math). increasing rents and pushing out the people who would benefit the most from living here (like...people who cant afford a $2k/mo studio apartment)... if there is anything to be optimistic about though, the parking maximums seem a bit overkill. the garage in my building has a fair bit of empty space, might even have a majority of residents living car free? (and no it isn't full of airbnbs) maybe the market will see that you can cut down on parking podium sizes in Midtown

    • @nathandaven
      @nathandaven  7 месяцев назад +1

      I wouldnt feel too bad - i also own a car and live next to a MARTA station. It is a viscious cycle, and a slow one to correct as we build new housing and walkable retail centric neighborhoods. We should be building denser housing regardless, but the point if the video is to point out that we could get there quicker if we stopped building so much parking!
      Definently the maximums are overkill, i was trying to infer. They should probably be way lower, or the city encourages less stalls / underground with other subsidies. Theres ways to go about it but when i was pretty surprised when i started this script, realizing we actually didnt have parking minimums near stations! Thanks for the comment 👊

    I am always excited to see when you post. I think you need to have more of a social Justice lense on your content because new urbanism has been commercialized by big corporations in luxury apartments and lifestyle centers. You mentioned banks incentives to only finance luxury apts which is a good start, but if you don’t address social Justice perspectives some people may think that you are indirectly promoting gentrification.

  • @DamianLewd
    @DamianLewd 7 месяцев назад +2

    None of it matters if all they’re building is luxury buildings. Who cares what percentage has parking. No one can afford to live there. I’m not worried about the amenities on billionaires row. The problem is always the city counsels not even the banks. They can approve you Luxury mammoth but if our representative did their jobs a repressed public interest this would be a conversation. Banks would have to rethink what the decide to fund if they can’t make returns on these monuments to wealth
    ..that ruin the environment to take up space and house basically no one.

    • @nathandaven
      @nathandaven  7 месяцев назад +2

      These luxury housing buildings are tomorrows affordable buildings -- the building will deteriorate and become more affordable in the following decades. Same thing with todays older rental houses and small apartment buildings, theyre cheap now but they were definently market rate at the time of construction. That's why its important to push for more units on a plot -- these buildings gonna stick around awhile and building so much parking only sets us up for failure

  • @DanSolowastaken

    I think it is an important distinction to separate parking podiums from surface parking as a problem for a city. An at grade retail floor, parking podium, then as-tall-as-you-can-get-away-with residential block is absolutely ideal. I agree that we have to many parking spots totally, but that issue is minimized when making a 3D city. Atlanta could have twice the parking in podiums if they''re in the middle of the "sandwich". That would barely register to average citizens. That 1/4 surface area could completely disappear and if there was abundant parking within one or two blocks of trip generators then there would be significantly less traffic. We need to remember the 1/3 of cars on the road in a city are just looking for parking.
    So what would that do for Atlanta? It would make far more opportunity to diversify an economy and allow for people to walk or bike to work. All trips are now 1/4 shorter. Living a half mile in one sandwich and working in another. Seeing as half of jobs in Atlanta and half of employed people are going to be work-from-home that means a ton more diversity in available 3rd spaces.
    Anyhow thanks for teaching me about the Texas Doughnut. I have a lot more to learn.

    • @nathandaven
      @nathandaven  6 месяцев назад

      They're definently different scales of evils -- I would much rather have a city of parking podiums with street retail and housing involved over surface parking lots for sure.
      But when you compare somewhere like Midtown with somewhere like Fairlie Poplar district, you can really tell the difference there! thanks for watching!
