Bellringing at Birmingham, St. Martin's in the Bullring - Bristol Surprise Sixteen
Просмотров 6 тыс.10 лет назад
A little bit of Change Ringing on the world's first ring of 16 bell hung for English Full Circle Ringing. This was recorded one Sunday morning in late 2013 when, in addition to the talented local band, there were a handful of first-rate ringers at the service ringing. Although the quality isn't great - this was recorded on my phone - I hope that this shows some of the music that is possible wit...
Bellringing at Manchester Cathedral
Просмотров 7 тыс.11 лет назад
In the bellringing world, Manchester is famed for the superb ring of 12 bells it has in its Town Hall. However, it has several other good rings of bells, including the ring of 10 at the Cathedral & Parish Church of St Mary, St Denys & St George. The bells here were all cast by Gillett and Johnston of Croydon in 1925, and the tenor weighs 27-3-6. (For the non-ringers here who have no idea about ...
Bellringing at Welshpool, Powys.

Skip the first 40 seconds to get to the start of the ringing. Outside of England full-circle change ringing is far less popular, with most churches in the rest of the world having bells hung for other styles of ringing or no bells at all. Wales is something of an exception, due to its location next to England and the fact that large parts of it have, over time, become greatly influenced by the ...
Bellringing at Hoar Cross, Staffordshire
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.12 лет назад
The village Hoar Cross is a scattering of buildings across a square mile or so of Staffordshire countryside. It's not a very large place and one might expect it to have a quaint little church. Yet it doesn't. The church is a vast, imposing building, built of local red sandstone, and featuring a large central tower. It looks a bit like Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on a smaller scale. The church ...
Can YOU figure out the tuning of these bells?
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.12 лет назад
The rather unusually tuned bells of Blisland church in Cornwall, being rung to some Norwich S Minor. Much as I tried, I couldn't figure out what the tuning for these bells was. Any ideas guys? Incidentally, Blisland church is rather nice, with an impressive chancel screen and a picture of Jesus which opens its eyes after you've stared at it for long enough.
Bellringing at Werrington, Cornwall

Werrington is a speck on the map on the Devon/Cornwall Border, just north of Launceston. The bells in the church were all cast by John Taylors of Loughborough in 1898, and are very nice. So here's some ringing on them. The piece in question is part of a touch of Plain and Little Bob Major. I don't normally record bell videos from outside, as watching the ringing inside is more interesting. But ...
Bellringing at Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire
Просмотров 10 тыс.12 лет назад
"Hello, these bells are good!" The small city of Lichfield is not a particularly famous place, but it is well known amongst Bellringers for having a very nice ring of 10 bells in its cathedral. They were all cast by John Taylor's of Loughborough in 1947 and the largest bell weighs 31cwt 2 qrs 9lbs (about 1.6). They were a gift from the Freemasons of Lichfield, which replaced a similarly sized r...

12/11/11 was 'Britain in a Day', where people across the UK were asked to record what they did on that Saturday in November 2011. This is what I got up too... This video is simply the 12 videos I already uploaded to RUclips stitched together into one big video. It includes some church bellringing, some dancing, some pubbage, and a lot of me talking. The footage is unedited, and was shot entirel...

The entertainment at the dinner that evening was a Ceilidh (Pronounced 'Kaylee') band, which is traditional for LUSCR. So here's an example of some of that dancing.

The Word Ringing's 11th Birthday
17 Dec 2020 - The Word Haircut's 18th Birthday
I learned to ring at Seaton and it has 6 bells now. I still ring their for practice and fore Sunday service.
They remind me on Bledington on the old "Bells of England" Saydisc recording. But they've been tuned now
NoastoutJa
ReneHollemansstoutJa
sound like belper 8 bells in F# all cast by taylors ho ho ho
i will become a bellringer sometime and ring here
The moment when you pulled the tenor to late
D C B A G# F#
I'm lucky enough to hear these on a regular basis
I was christened in Seaton church in 1952.
Did I spot a young Chris Woodcock on the 2nd?
First off, they're not in Equal Temperament! That might be part of the confusion. I tried working the notes out on a Turkish baglama saz, with 17 notes to the octave, and it sounds like 3rd is a quarter-tone flat, so in btw the minor and major; the 2nd and 6th are also off from ET minor/major, but not a full quarter-tone. This leads me to think that they might've been tuned to something like Just intonation or Mean Temperament, one of those older systems where all the sharps and flats were actually different intervals; ex. F# and Gb were different tones about 10-20 cents apart. I'd say it only sounds 'out of tune' to us b/c we're so used to hearing ET everything. My best guess.
Like these bells they remind me of Addingham, Emley and Shelley
Not far off....these are early Taylors and Addingham is Lester & Pack
i looked at Dove guide to find the notes. I know a little on music theory so here goes. we all know the basic octave pattern which is tone tone semitone. tone tone tone semitone. In music there is what is known as modes so lets look at a 12 bell ring in the key of C. if you ring all 12 or 10 or the back 8 you are in C major. if you start on the 11th which is D you have started on the second degree of the major scale and it is called Dorian and in this case D dorian. In this case it starts on F which is the 4th degree of a major scale and is the Lydian mode so these bells are tuned to F Lydian.and so is related to C major. If you were to go to a say Bow which is in. C major the 9th is in F so if you then made that the tenor and rang 6, the forth will be the treble an you will find the 6 at Blisland are the same notes as the 9th to the fourth at Bow. To take the idea further if you ring the front 8 you are starting on the 5th degree which is G and it is G Mixolydian and it doesnt obey the major scale rule so you need a sharp 2nd which makes the front 8 now G major hope this helps, i dont know to much about music theory but this I do know
C IV & J IV Pennington cast them, possibly a tuning accident.
The Tenor is in F# a bit like the tenor at my tower in Sussex but when I listen to this one , it is a lot like it sounds a bit like F
1, 2, 3, 4 5#, 6#?
I reckon so...
THE TOWN HALL CHIMES ARE EPIC ALONG WITH GREAT ABEL
I am working near Oakham for 8 months next year. Will have to try these bells.
The treble and 2nd bell sound like lots of pigs oinking! Like the front 14 though
@@RingerJake pretty obvious he means back 14...
Tuned to WTF# is what I can say....but the tenor is definalty F# and some have elements of rings in G and F
its the tower with the tenor that does the wonky note on the first strike 0:04
Wonderful.
One of my dream towers to ring at!
Tenor sounds a flat f#. They sound something like D #C B A bG# bF#. Best I can do. Not much of a ringer but I have a vague idea of scales.
I learnt to ring here! 1974
i bell ring here!
amazing
Yeah I kind of like them. But they do sound bad
Lol there bad
I wouldn't say it's not particularly famous ! It's a wonderful small cathedral city know as the city of philosophy for most of the 18th 19th & early 20th cent . And as you rightly point out a great peal of bells :-) thanks for sharing
lunaticonthegrass111 The treble sounds like it is double-striking.
It sounds like F#
Tenor bell d1
Which Saint is it?
+Jane Watson Hey Jane just saw your comment about the bell ringing video. the Church in question is Saint Mary's Church in the Mid Wales town of Welshpool. I live there and if you ever get the chance to visit this wonderful Church I advise you go. I hope this info helps you.
James you are correct..these are good. I have some unfinished business here. I rang the tenor to a lot of a peal and need to come back ho ho ho
Nice ringing, pity the tenor sounds like a bucket ;-)
My great great great great grandfather was christened here in Manchester. Every time I hear these bells they remind me of him.
Very nice indeed, it's only on something like this that one can appreciate 16 bell ringing, I hope to return here for a longer ring than what I had at the RWNYC :-)
the tenor here is one of the best tenors i have rung
I love Gillet bells, including the fine 12 at Coventry and the wonderful 8 in the beautiful Wren church at St James Clerkenwell. Many happy memories ringing for weddings back in the dim dark 1960s when you got the princely sum of 10 bob or what is now 50p a rope. Such a long time ago now and such a long way from home now which is Sydney
A lovely touch of simply the best method, STEDMAN CATERS. This is very well rung, a joy to listen to. I think the bells are the perfect weight not to heavy, not to light and another fine Taylor peal for sure. I think there is something really joyful about 10 bell ringing and I think Stedman is so lovely to listen to.
In my book. It’s Abergavenny For Caters. Christ Church Swindon, for Royal.
