- "Hello, these bells are good!"
The small city of Lichfield is not a particularly famous place, but it is well known amongst Bellringers for having a very nice ring of 10 bells in its cathedral. They were all cast by John Taylor's of Loughborough in 1947 and the largest bell weighs 31cwt 2 qrs 9lbs (about 1.6). They were a gift from the Freemasons of Lichfield, which replaced a similarly sized ring of 10. However, the bell frame - which is the oldest 10 bell frame in existence, dating from 1688 - was retained, hence the large and slightly uneven rope circle.
Lichfield Cathedral was my home tower for 7 years, before I moved away to university in 2008. After that, I still returned to Sunday service ringing and practice nights in the holidays. The ringing in this video was recorded on a practice night in July 2012. It's a 2-course touch of Stedman Caters.
A few other interesting things here are the clock case suspended from part of the ceiling, which gives bells 6, 7 and 8 a shorter draught, and my way of relieving boredom after about 9 minutes of holding my camera trying to make the visual element of this video interesting!
I learnt a lot in my 7 years ringing here too. I've always been rather lucky in terms of access to good ringing.
One of my dream towers to ring at!
Lovely. I enjoyed this very much. Thanks for your patience in filming.
A lovely touch of simply the best method, STEDMAN CATERS. This is very well rung, a joy to listen to. I think the bells are the perfect weight not to heavy, not to light and another fine Taylor peal for sure. I think there is something really joyful about 10 bell ringing and I think Stedman is so lovely to listen to.
In my book. It’s Abergavenny For Caters. Christ Church Swindon, for Royal.
I'm lucky enough to hear these on a regular basis
I've been waiting for a good video of these for ages, great sounding bells.
I wouldn't say it's not particularly famous ! It's a wonderful small cathedral city know as the city of philosophy for most of the 18th 19th & early 20th cent . And as you rightly point out a great peal of bells :-) thanks for sharing
Fabulous bells and some excellent ringing there. Taylors hohoho!!
James you are correct..these are good. I have some unfinished business here. I rang the tenor to a lot of a peal and need to come back ho ho ho
Yes, that's Clive M Smith sitting on the right of the table. Not to be confused with Clive G Smith!
its the tower with the tenor that does the wonky note on the first strike 0:04
amazing
think that, that is one Clive Smith. :-)
I have never been to England and actually see anything famous. But I will always remember England as the home to this style of bell ringing. I am proud to be English by blood.
i bell ring here!

Like, like, like. I used to go to their practice nights when I was 15ish, and learned a lot, especially from the chap who's asleep at the table in your clip.
Is that Cambridge minor with 7,8,9,10 covering?
