Thank you for being you~ I think you're very special.
Hi Laura, First of all, your English is amazing! I'm so impressed. I was an exchange student for a week with a German host family in Munich during my junior year of high school. They didn't speak any English, so my fellow student and I were constantly looking up German words. They had two sons-one was already on his own as a policeman, and the other was in Gymnasium. Although he had been studying English for years, he spoke very little with us. I'm considering hosting a student for a school year. Do you have any suggestions for me as a potential host? If I ever get to Germany again, I'd love to take you out for lunch or coffee if you're interested. Best, Paul
Where did you go in Texas?
👍
I'm from Southern Germany (Village) my Famelie goes to church nearly every Sunday (I hardly ever miss two in a row), now one makes me go it is my choice. Sometimes I go to a Youth service that is ones a month on sonday evenings, and on sunday morning, our church has about 20 people who attend regularly, besides me (19) and my brother (17) everyone of the regulars is over 50 and most are even retired.
We're getting prepared to host a girl from Germany next year and I've been watching all of your videos to help prepare our family. Thanks for all your content, it's been a big help so far!
how do you convince your strict parents to let you go because i am 13 this year and i really really want to go and i dont think She will let me
I feel bad for exchange students who end up in the south. The United States is a very very big country, and each state is almost like its own country. You’re going to have a very different experience in Oklahoma than you are in Minnesota or California. If you’re a white exchange student, you’re likely to have a tad bit more of a positive experience than if you are a POC in the south. It’s a hit or miss.
Hey! What do you recommend when you only feel homesick at school? Not homesick but just like sad . I’m in the USA this year and school is the hardest part, because it’s impossible to make friends in classes, and the ones I have I can’t only see in lunch or after school, so idk what to do because I just don’t have anything to distract myself with in class and feel lonely all the time while I’m there
how long before you plan to go should you apply?
hi laura! did u have to take any mid terms or exams? thats the one thing putting me off.....
very helpful
It's been 1 week and 1 day since I arrived and it's been so hard for me. I'm crying all day, idk what to do
Is it better now?
Thank you for making these videos! I am 14 and planning to go to usa when im 17 im so excited already even though i dont think il going to get there tho cuz my parents dont have money for that, but its a dream.
Who else is watching this under the age of 18
Do I have to go to a private school to become one or could I be from a public school?
Hay Laura! I just wanted to ask: do I need to bring my exchange student to every hangout I go to? It’s been a couple weeks so far and I have invited my exchange student to every hangout and it has been so much fun. However, I am hanging out with my one friend this weekend and I sort of just want one on one time with her. Is that ok? I’m a bit scared of what my mother will say when I ask so some advice would be good as well. Thank you.
Thanks, one question; I’m thinking of being an exchange student when I’m 17 so I have enough time to think of this decision. My only question is can you become and exchange student if you have a condition? Not like anything that bad but I mean l struggle with NF1 causing me to grow a tumour in my brain. And obviously getting surgery for it. Will it be safe to go for an exchange year in the United States? Or would it cause issues if I need surgery if I grow a tumour?
Your English-language is great
What about pocket money and in your video what to pack for going to us you said that it would be great to bring 400 hundred dollars with you but what if you cant afford to bring that much how eould the things work then
Europe is not tiny by comparison to the US.... as a whole it is roughly the same size as the US. Maybe you meant that Germany is small by comparison....
lol if a continent is the same size as a country its obviously 'small'
What about pocket money how much will it be and if you cant aford to bring 400 hundred dollars so what will i supposed to do then
Based on her American accent, I thought she was going to tell us about the German kid they hosted.
My exchange will last for 1 month, so this video comes in hand A LOT
@aericorn_ It didn't even happen yet 😂 And I need to be the top student of my school to go, so there's a chance I will not go lol. But don't be scared, stuff is way easier than what we might think, and USA is so culturally diverse that even if your english isn't that good, chances are people are going to understand u a lil bit 🤠👍
I'm 14 and I'm going on an exchange to the us for 10 months next year september , staying with a host family and going to a high school . I'm really looking forward to it and this video was very helpful . Thanksss 💗
I prefer starting host tourists come to Tanzania ( Zanzibar ) sometime next year .
Really good video,I hope I can win a competition I have at my school to get a free exchange, and if I do that, this video is going to help me a lot, and possibly, make tears fall from my eyes lol hhaha. The exchange can be to England, Ireland or USA, and before watching your videos, I just wanted to go to NYC, but now, I see the beauty of the south
Will we be getting more videos?I am trying to win a free exchange at my school, in Brazil, and your videos are REALLY good and easy to understand, as I dont speak fluent english
I find it cool that in some countries, language classes at school really work lol, like, here in Brazil, We learn the To Be verb, since the first year of the fundamental school, til the Last day of High-School lol. I mean, the teachers try to teach more, but most people forget like, at the same day, and the classes just focus on getting good grades at the test
We have so many families where the students have to share room because they would love to open their homes and their hearts to an international student, but they just don’t have the room if we take all these out because we shouldn’t be sharing a room then we wouldn’t be able to bring as many students to the US and let me tell you that a lot of students from other regions already share their rooms in their home countries as well. And with your tip number one they will have chores. They probably will have chores than you ever had in your home country. Specially, I am German born and raised so I know I never had to do anything at the house and when I moved to the rest suddenly you have to do chores because most of the kids here do their own laundry, so I say we are not bed-and-breakfast for the students so you are part of the family and if the family helps clean the house, the Exchange students and help clean the house and do chores
Thank you for this video!!
I wonder if it is allowed to wear cultural dress at school?
8:54 As a muslim (girl), it is compulsory for us to cover our heads. I wonder if muslims girls are allowed to wear headscarves?
Guys do you have to have all As?
😒 what are you here ! In this vedio you are the one who should tell the organization and other resources! 😒other things you told in the vedio , we already know them !
Hi! Idk if you still active but since I’m questioning myself I'll leave a comment. I’m kinda anxious about going back in my country cuz I have good memories about how my family dynamic/life was but I perfectly know that he wont never be the same it’s really disturbing… do u have anymore advice?
I wish my family had at least ask their daughters if they were okay with hosting me… they didn’t. Making the whole tougher.
Don't sell yourself short, your English/vocab is better than so many Americans! Lol
Can you do a video talking about how was school when you got back to your country? Like what did you professors said, how long it took you to reintegrait?
My answer to the how was it question would definitely be: life-changing
Thank you for making these videos! We are considering hosting a student someday soon.
We are hosting a teen right now. She showed no interest in anyone we introduced her. Tons of teenagers that we know and she said she didn’t have anything in common with them. She made friends with only kids from her own country. She pushed and not obeyed any curfews. Very rude to us and kids. Rejected all information so she can have initiative in things. Also she feels she does too much at home, and we just ask her to clean up after herself and clean up dinner dishes. I think one thing exchange students NEED to learn before going anywhere, is that they need to respect the home and know that there are different rules in place. It took a lot of talking and stress to get to the point that we can finish the school year.
Did you have in home a monthly visit with the representative of the organization ?
Thanks for this. We have a German girl coming this year for our first hosting. Lots of German descendants here in Wisconsin so should be a good fit
I’m in Switzerland which program would you guys recommend , that covers all of it ?
I am an International Exchange Coordinator ( a person trained to bring students to the US and find host families) from Ohio and just stumbled upon your video. You have done an excellent job on this video and it is the same advice I would have given!! I would add that students should NOT exchange currency at the airport and they should try to use Applepay if possible! There sometimes are issues with credit cards but Applepay almost always works!!! That would be a great subject for another video. Can I share this with my students for next year and other IEC’s? ( by the way - your English is excellent!!!)
Where do you find the kids you place wishing they could have been placed differently? I’m interested in becoming a host family but don’t want to move to the middle of nowhere with not much to offer
You are now active in youtube platform...?
