The Best Paper for Fountain Pens (Testing 8 Premium Papers)
The Gentleman Stationer had a Fountain Pen Day promotion of a testing pack of 8 popular premium fountain pen friendly papers, and in this video, I put them to a head to head test. This was a nice variety of papers and I got to try out some new options like the onionskin paper.
I test 4 different pens and an ink swatch across all 8 papers.
You can find these papers at The Gentleman Stationer. www.gentlemanstationer.com

As a result of this bleed through, it is making it a single side of the paper use, which is no...

    I have been buying Tsubame notebooks for creative writing and composition notebook type stuff. For even rougher drafting, Staples Composition Notebook (at least the Sri Lanka -sourced ones) are fountain pen safe. (And a dollar.) For one-off scratch notes, Rhodia A5 and A4 pads. For letters, I just use Claire Fontaine. Cost is a factor in all of this. :) The composition / B5-sized notebooks are very cost effective. And Rhodia and Claire Fontaine are reasonable. Campus notebooks are interesting, but I just don't like how they look. Even their more "professional" notebooks are ... Tsubame are nice looking and great.

    Hi, very nice video. Is there a way by which a Japanese eyedropper prevents blurps/leakages during writing, as compared to traditional eyedroppers?

    • @dwrdnet
      @dwrdnet 2 дня назад

      I have not had any of mine burp, and since you can shut off the main ink chamber, iI would say that could heavily reduce the chance of burping, as if you only open the shutoff slightly, ink will still flow and you shouldn't have an air bubble to deal with. On a standard eyedropper, there isn't a way to restrict the flow of ink, so it is more likely to seek the only way out which is via the feed.

    So many great papers that the sampler paper didn't include. One of my favorite papers is Cosmo Air Light and Cosmo Air Snow. I'm also a big fan of Kokuyo's papers. I use the little Campus notebooks all the time and their paper is so great for fountain pens. And for cream colored papers, Midori MD is the bomb (but not ALL Midori paper is great for fountain pen though, like some of their stationery/letter writing paper I found to not be awesome for fountain pen. it's specifically the MD line of paper that seems to be universally loved). Shame that the new Tomoe River paper is just so hit or miss now days.

      @dwrdnet 3 дня назад

      Oh it would be impossible to have some of all of the great papers for sure. This was a nice Fountain pen day gift for buying a certain amount in the store. I loved getting to try the onion skin paper. That was a fun experience. I have an A5 Kokuyo journal that I haven't yet started, but I look forward to using that paper too. At least there are Tomoe notebooks like the Lochby or others that have paper that acts as expected.

    Were you and Beth getting this pen when I met you at The Gentleman Stationer a few weeks ago? Personally, TWSBI will never get any money from me again. The fountain pen using community is small enough that it behooves us to at least treat each other decently, which TWSBI did not do, and for no valid reason. So I'll nurse my little grudge and buy pens from other sources.

    I can see the ghosting but not much bleed through. This is expected even with the old 52gsm Tomoe River Paper. There have been many issues with the new Tomoe River Paper which was taken over by Sansen. This is just the way things are with this paper at present and not much anyone can do about it except move to another brand like Midori, etc. etc. I am no paper master, but I have been writing with fountain pens for over 52 years and counting and there is always a give and take on better fountain pen friendly paper. Too thin, too rough, and just right it all comes down to personal choice. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Kudos from NYC.🗽

    Though I own several limited edition pens, that is irrelevant to my decision to get them. Unless there's a valid reason, like time and skill for making it or rarity of materials used in a pen, creating FOMO and inflated demand by limiting the number of items seems like a marketing fraud, and I generally disapprove. When Lamy released the Safari in 2016, its first purple color, dark lilac, it was claimed to be a limited edition for European buyers only. I got one. Then, seeing how popular it was, they said (though probably in German) "Ach! Let us make and sell lots of these plastic ink sticks, and sell them to gullible penpeeps worldwide! Today Germany, tomorrow, the world!" or something. This changed the meaning of "limited". Then there are the MontFake pens marked with run numbers and item numbers, easily fake since the edition and the numbers are both identical and way too large. I'll bring a few and show you.

  • @ti2809
    @ti2809 7 дней назад

    sir this is not "rare" there are almost two thousand of these out there and considering how small the fountain pen community is, this was probably made with the market in mind that only a few thousand people would actually want a churchhill edition fountain pen. i wouldn't call it rare i would call it made to spec. many fountain pens are made in small volumes and it's just not advertised as such. sure you can say that compared to a Lamy this is rare but we're not talking one of one here.

    Oh very nice pen! Regular fine with just a little flex. Now that is more up my alley. I like bouncy and flexy nibs. If it didn't flex, I'd probably would prefer that in more of a medium nib. I know you love the Extra Fine nibs, but those are too fine for my liking. Gorgeous pen. I don't have anything like that in my collection sad to say. But pens in that range are just a bit rich for me to justify. Of course, if I made a trip down to Vanness, or up to Atlas, who knows how much I would drop on a pen if I could sample one first haha

    Thank you for talking about what you use the products for. I'm due to go back to NYC in a couple of months and will need to check out some of the places you mentioned. I did buy my two Lamy AL Stars from a local pen store. Interesting that he didn't have a big selection of ink, but to be honest, I think he's more into selling expensive pens as there are "men of means" in that office building location. But I wanted a new bottle of ink, so I picked out a Sailor ink called Koke, just to get one from there instead of buying from Amazon. The bottle is beautiful (to me) and I really like the ink. I wanted a light, but not too light, blue turquoise and this exceeded my expectations. - Regarding Grand Central Station, I did a tour, and the history is amazing. It was going to be torn down, but a famous person in history saved it. There are a lot of other interesting stories as well about it.

    • @dwrdnet
      @dwrdnet 10 дней назад

      Some shops are like that, but there are others that are more directed towards getting you matched with the right pen for your needs. For online inks, check out some of the great store websites like Vanness Pens, Gentleman Stationer, and Atlas Stationers. They are all small businesses who have a great online presence as well and they all follow the thought of match you with what is right, vs force what has the best margins. I hope you find some cool stuff in the stores when you are in NYC. I want to go back to see visit these and maybe some other stores that we didn't make it to this last trip.

    Most of what I have experienced with the Tomoe Sanzen paper has been ghosting - which is something that has always been the case with Tomoe River paper for me and I enjoy it. I don't have a problem writing over the ghosted text and it's not a big distraction - but I understand if that's a distraction or problem for others. However, this year, I have had one pen (a Kaweco Sport with Kaweco black ink) that actually bled through the paper to the other side and that was a shock to me. I've never had actual bleed through in a Hobonichi product (I am using a Hobonich HON).

    • @dwrdnet
      @dwrdnet 13 дней назад

      Yea I have seen people talking about the full blued through. I have not had that issue, but using any sort of dark ink, it is hard to read around the show through for me.

  • @mollymollie6048
    @mollymollie6048 14 дней назад

    I’ve seen quite a few people with Weeks and Cousins that are having similar or worse problems…including with fine gel pens, and even the Uniball that Hobonichi gifts with it!! They have also contacted Hobonichi and received the same “too bad, so sad” response. Really glad that I was one and done with Hobonichi last year. I switched to Sterling Ink (which is also TRP, but the 52gsm) and I’m not having any problems with it, and it’s performing with less ghosting than my 2024 Cousin (which I barely used because too many colors, too much quote, too visually distracting for me. I wouldn’t go back to Hobonichi for anything with the poor customer service they’ve shown with the disaster of a year. Other planners that use TRP are also having problems, I’m not sure if they went with the thinner version or the regular, and it seems to be hit or miss with bad batches, etc. Somebody definitely fell asleep at the quality control wheel. I’m also surprised that they wanted the paper even thinner as it already ghosted to an extent that was annoying to someone who used Rhodia or similar thicker papers that didn’t do that. If you’ve noticed also, the colors of ink when swatching look flat and dull, and swatches bleed horribly (even when the writing isn’t feathering or bleeding.) So, I imagine this is going to be a great opportunity for other fountain pen friendly paper companies to start selling their goods to planner makers because I think many, many people are really frustrated with Hobonichi, and with TRP in some other small planner brands.

    Thanks for your video- I am having issues. . . I just sent Hobonichi an email letting them know how sad I am that my 2025 weeks is not fountain pen friendly. I’ve used Hobonichi for years and have loved their paper till now. I’m making do this year as well - using ball points. Will be looking for weeks size in other brands - they are out there somewhere!

      @@VesperJester I just looked it up and while it does look similar, there is a review showing it next to a weeks, and due to its bigger size, I am not sure that it would be as easy to back pocket carry sadly. I might still order one to try the paper at some point though.

      @@dwrdnet oh that’s unfortunate. Hopefully you can find a hobo dup that’s small enough for you. I know moleskine has their pocket planners and leuchtturm1917 has a6 weekly softcover planners. Maybe that’ll hold you over until you can find what you’re looking for.

    So disappointing. Just curious, does using a pencil board behind the page when you right makes any difference to how the ink reacts on the paper?

    • @dwrdnet
      @dwrdnet 14 дней назад

      It actually made it worse, as the ink has a hard back to soak in more from what I saw.

    I've been using the Weeks since 2019. I am disappointed with the change to Sanzen. It does not perform like the original. I do have bleed through with my darker inks. Robert Oster Great Southern Ocean and Diamine Lilac Night. But, I like the layout so much and the size, I'll continue purchasing most likely. I did purchase 2 Weeks mega with the original TRP before it was discontinued (will just have to re-date.) My curiosity got the best of me and I did purchase a 2025 Weeks. I am curious though, with the technology today, why is it impossible to create paper like the original TRP? As much as we all love TRP, maybe the market is not big enough to justify the cost.

    my pen journey started in fourth grade when my Arabic teacher made fountain pens mandatory for class eventually the mandate was lifted and by twelfth grade, I was last in my class using them then I went to uni and forgot my pen back home (different country) so I started using ballpoints again then one day I saw a video on RUclips from Goulet Pens. so I got curious (up until that point i had only used cheap Shneider and Pelikan pens that all cost less than 3$) I saw the Lamy safari, and after a few months of research and saving up (again student budget) I bought one with a bottle of ink that I though was black (noodlers black swan english roses) turns out i should have looked up samples of but fortunately now it is my favorite red. and since then I have been expanding my collection with my first safari still firmly holding its place within my collection. and a slightly controversial opinion but the Safari to me is the better starter pen since it teaches people the correct orientation to hold the pen (I have seen people default to holding a pen upside down when I first let them try one of mine).

    • @rudolphaswad8723
      @rudolphaswad8723 14 дней назад

      @@dwrdnet like i said i meant it for beginners the people that usually have trouble with the grip are people with some prior experience with fountain pens, so they know how to hold them. a beginner doesn't and that's where that grip comes in, it teaches them the correct orientation, then they are free to buy something else but again that's just my opinion

At first I was like wow, why so many pens…then I decided to go and count how many pens I had in my bags when I went into the office today…29. Twenty nine pens…I was going to say I have a problem but I have proper storage for all of them and they all fit so I think I am good right? Right!?! 😂

    Usually I use something similar to a zippered leather pen pouch from Galen Leather. I have a few, they are rigid too so they protect what is inside. Such a shame about Nock Co., I did get a couple of these before they sold out to Rickshaw. The Brasstown in an excellent pen case. The products from Lochby are awesome also. I think I have three Quattro’s in different bags or near my desk. Love the brown waxed canvas. Evergoods is a fairly new company but man do they have some excellent products, I have several of their bags. I don’t use the 2 liter Civic Access Pouch for stationary, mostly use it like you do for cables, mouse, etc. for when I travel to and from the office. I do use the 1 liter Civic Access Pouch for pens and pencils, I love the magnetic closure.

    Love this pen, it’s so underrated. I think this was one of these best valued pens from last year. I usually prefer the vintage Sheaffer’s but I ended up buying all four, both VFM’s (fountain pen and ballpoint) and both 100’s (fountain pen and rollerball). As for the 100’s, I love the look and the feel. It has a nice heft in the have that the VFM is missing. Also the color matched nib and section sold me on this pen. The VFM section feels cheap and its thin. I will say that I was very happy with the VFM ballpoint pen, ballpoints from Sheaffer have always been great writers (as great as a ballpoint can be I guess), we all need something to write on cheap copier paper sometimes and the Sheaffer VFM ballpoint is it. The 100 rollerball is a really nice pen too but may ghost or bleed through cheaper paper. I think my winning combo would be the Sheaffer 100 fountain pen paired with the VFM ballpoint, you’d have all the bases covered. If you are on the fence about which fountain pen to buy, I would go with the 100. Even at almost twice the price of the VFM, it’s still worth it and at around $40, it is a really good deal. Fun fact I learned recently, Sheaffer is supposed to be pronounced “Shee-fa”. Not sure I am going to pronounce it that way but thought it was an interesting piece of info. All the best!
