A strong machine which is even more impressive in person! Maybe next time you can show it cutting a log to size.
Yesterday was " show and tell day" Carl and his friend came over to try it out and they had so much fun that they split everything I had cut !
Way cool, buddy. You dun got you one heck of a setup, right there :) . This reminds me of an idea that I wanna try, where you mount a 20 ton wood splitter, upside down, in place of the excavator bucket, so you can process, and shift, the logs - from the comfort of the operator's seat :) .
Hello my old friend, yes, this setup fills the gap of managing all the the logs that arrive at our yard. The good, bad and ugly all have specific processing methods. This machine is well designed to eliminate the strain on the body. We all like that idea ! There are several brands of splitters on the market which mount on excavators such as the idea you have. I still have the original hydraulic splitter which I built in the 1970's . It could be used in a vertical or horizontal position. Right now it sits , a monument to one man's idea that there's got to be an easier way.
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 Yup, there has got to be an easier way, and a safer one too. Over time, you have honed your systems, and improved their throughput, while keeping the really hard work to a minimum :) . One of these days, I'll need to set up a few machines, so as to take some of the strain off, while dealing with these pesky little woodgas bug hiding places.

Good to see you out there and staying busy. That new splitter is a good answer for the big wood problem you’ve had to bare with. Thanks and have a great week
My retirement plan. " Chop 'til I drop". Don't let the "old guy attitude" take hold of your life.

9 years ago. Rest in Peace my beautiful girl.
The old wartime gasifiers stuck on the trucks just used hay and dry grass, when they got too dirty they were chucked in the fire, and then replaced with fresh stuff.
What is the displacement of the engine? You can hear the generator slows down a lot under load 14 amps is a pretty good result thought 😊
The engine is a Harbor Freight 420 cc, 13 hp. Turning a 60amp Delco 1 wire to charge 8 6VDC deep cycle lead acid batteries. A/C output is through a 3000 watt pure sign wave Samlex inverter. I'm in the process of switching out the batteries for LiFePO4 batteries.
@nhhbbyloggr5022 That's pretty good stuff you can do a lot with that . Have you seen that the engine has more power at 2500 to 2800 rpm than 3000 rpm . Mine certainly struggled whit a 3 5 kw load at 3000 rpm en quickly stabilises around 2700
@@oscarverwey I have not had enough run time with this set up to find a sweet spot. I suspect I will at some point when we lose the grid power and I'm forced to make load choices . That said, I'm glad it works on any level for now.. I have installed the new modified water/steam injection nozzle which should boost the " octane" of the gas.
Positive pressure system is always better for startup then one can see the leaks 😅
The beginning days of my wood gas journey. Every flare, every engine start brought happiness. Live it, breathe it, sleepless nights going over what make this thing tick.
@nhhbbyloggr5022 yeah I agree i feel the same way its a awesome hobby. I watched quite some of your videos today. En I'm glad I found your channel.
@@oscarverwey We also have a charcoal gasifier too. The entire filter is a small ammo box before the engine. No tar ! Where are you from ? I'm in New Hampshire, USA.
Running noce en lean 😊
Waaw, that's a nice gen-set you got there .whatbis the max power output. i love the sound. Do you plan to run it on dual fuel or even convert it to spark ignition?
It's a 16 Hp single cylinder diesel spinning a 12KW ST generator. I have a 30 KW Chrysler slant 6 225 Hp which runs on propane or wood gas. This Metro diesel would do well running on a diesel / wood gas mix. I have a lot of diesel fuel on the farm so this is a good choice for long run times if needed. Thanks for your comments !
Well done, my fellow woodenwatter, and charcoal current creator :) . As you have already learned, pulling on the starter cord is a good idea, before starting the engine, just in case......... I wood like to suggest the use of a little mirror, for looking into the ignition port. That way, you will be safe, in case of any bursty pops that might emerge from it, when a woodgas bug gets overly flatulent ;) .
Good idea using a mirror. I did have my safety glasses on but they would not have saved the mustache or the handsome smile. I'm going to pull out the air/water nozzle today for an inspection and make sure the passages are clear. It's raining here for the next couple days so I get some shop time.
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 I learned about the need for a mirror, the hard way, when one of my gasifiers blasted a load of hot goodness - directly onto the surface of my left eye! To my amazement, the eye was still there, as I was sure that it had been destroyed. The next blast launched the charcoal to a height of at least 30 feet, so I duly invented mirrors :) . Keep yer smile, and yer mustache safe, lest the woodgas bugs get them! Enjoy the rain my fellow addict. It is raining here also, which gives me the time I need to study up on a construction project that I have here on the farm.
@@CNCmachiningisfun Lucky you, I would say ! Aside from the safety aspect it would be a great help to me not having to get down on my bummed out knee. I pulled the air/water nozzle out yesterday to check its condition and no signs of degradation . I also added a check valve between the nozzle and the water tank to prevent water or steam percolating back into the tank. Test run today !
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 Indeed! Being able to see those woodgas bugs approaching, is a good thing :) . Yup, my knees are useless too, always have been "Thanks", inheritance! That's good news about the solid condition of the nozzle. With due care, it ought to last quite a while, methinks. Your system, and mine, differ in one obvious way. Yours appears to let the water run thru a valve, to be converted into steam, whereas mine is more like a kettle on a stove, producing steam, that gets piped to the nozzle.
@@CNCmachiningisfun After installing the check valve to prevent percolating I fired up for a test run. there was a gain in perceived power, as I had to increase the air setting at the A/F mixing valve with a notable gain in RPM. This Nozzle is made from 1/2 " pipe sleeved inside a 1"pipe forming an inner chamber between the pipe walls , then welded at both ends. A very small drill hole in the 1/2" pipe allows the water/steam to vent into the incoming air along the inner pipe of the nozzle . The water feed tube from the tank supplies the water between the two pipes. The heat boils the water then allows steam to flow into the coal bed. Big gains !
Glad to see you give her a spin! You'll find once that water comes steaming out of the jet you'll get a major gas potency boost. Might be as good as running the engine off of propane. Plus the water keeps the nozzle from burning away so thats a bonus.
Interesting to see how this gasification project has evolved. For a number of years I lived it, breathed it and became totally addicted. I'll be adding a check valve today to see if the water flow is better regulated. Imagine, a digital performance readout to fine tune the run ! Thanks for the comment. I do keep track of DOW to see what you guys are up to.
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 I'm going to try and make a big boy version of this nozzle for my old Square Body. I may have to change the steam vent to allow thermal expansion for the water. I have a feeling the boiling will be more violent and would just spit the water through the nozzle.
@@cetate93 Oh boy,Here we go ! Do I hear " Injection Pump" to meter it with constant pressure flow?
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 I'm not very capable of that, I was thinking of just introducing water at the bottom and have an exit up top with a little room for expansion and a metal tube for the steam to vent into the nozzle. Not as elegant as the way Matt has laid his out but essentially the same in principle. I'd like to keep it as mechanically simple as possible, if I could find a low pressure relief valve I think that would help. Something to just hold back the gravity pressure of the water but allow the steam to exit.
@@cetate93 I fabricated the nozzle from Matt's design and will be adding a check valve between the tank and the valve . I'll keep you posted.
Great to see you get out the gasifier out and get a good handle on the operation. Try not to work too hard during firewood season and save a little time for the gasifier 😁👍
It has been gnawing at me all summer to get this unit running. Now I know ! It works. I still can't believe how stable it runs. A constant load makes the difference I'd say.

Right you are. Nice to find the time once in a great while to do the fun stuff. I could easily spend a week working on this project.
Another successful test of the Predator.
This unit is very easy to get up and running and the performance / stability factor is a real plus. Now to make more charcoal ( that's the elephant in the room )
Glad to see your back and you got your eyes fixed. I know you are sure happy with that. That emergency power system is just the ticket and will be very helpful in an outage. Wow, that wood splitter does a great job, nice work on that. That charcoal gasifier is an awesome tool 👌😁👍
These wheelie Chairs are just the ticket. I converted one years ago with hard bottom and wire rack sides to bring firewood into the house. I can stack three days worth on it , pull it up two steps into the porch then roll it right through the house and park it next to the wood stove. I think this power supply set up will work out well ( just have to keep them warm ) Thanks for checking in and hope all is well down your way. Been really too hot for me to do much this summer.
Howdee, my fellow woodenwatter :) . It is nice to see you and Ralph, boning up on all this woody goodness. This is watt we have come to expect, in your neck of the woods ;) . About alternators: Those things are mighty tough, and I think you wood have a hard time burning one out. 24 years ago, I built a rather large, diesel powered, self propelling, arc welder/power plant. It weighed well over a ton, so it needed to be independently mobile. Anyway, it had 6 * 60 Amp alternators in it, for a total of 360A welding current, at 50V DC, at 100% duty cycle. Now, try as I might, I could never burn up any of those car alternators :) . Them there is tough customers! Keep up the woodwork, oops, I mean good work :) .
I have so much to give and so little time to do it, so I make things much more complicated than needed. And look at you 360 Amps at 100%, no wonder you needed a diesel engine to drive them. I'm planning on using the little Predator engine/Alternator on the Chip gasifier to charge the L-Batts and I think the draw down would stall the engine, unless I were to charge the L Batteries using a long length of smaller wire adding some resistance. A few minutes ago a thunderstorm with a lightning strike nearby caused the lights to flicker which got me all excited to possibly have to trot down to the shop and highwheel the new power supply into the house to take charge at " Central Command ".
Maybe just in time, too. Did you ever get that feeling??? ruclips.net/video/NKXYZvb2Kus/видео.html
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 Indeed. So many projects - - so little time! For the alternator-engine stalling issue, resistance is an OK choice, and the more robust choice may be a different pulley ratio, so it spins a little slower. With mine, I used electronics to manage the load, thereby creating watt I called an electronic clutch. It worked nicely, and saved me a fortune in long, thin, wires ;) . Your chair of wheely-power is gonna save you a lot of pain, especially if those power cuts, and sunny spots start to mess up the national griddle!
@@CNCmachiningisfun We are due for a major catastrophic event , I have the wiffle ball racket at the ready to fend off those pesky catastrophe bugs and then wait for the earth to turn over.
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 It is good to be ready for the worst that nature may throw at us. One must always keep a fluffy towel handy, also ;) .
Good ol' yankee ingenuity
You have to see the size of those trees in person to understand the scope of the challenge you are facing. We are all looking forward to seeing your progress.
Bill I remember going through this mess here at the compound when the storms rolled through this area. We got all of the trees removed that were near structures and as far as any trees that fall in the woods, I let the Lord sort those out for me. When they do finally fall and can be safely removed, they become firewood for the house.
Once these Pines are down they will stay there and provide nourishment for the woods thriving organisms rather than eating our house.
Oh, what a nasty situation! Your recovery strategy sounds pretty solid, so I reckon you'll win this battle soon enough :) .
The plan this morning was to start cutting the access road from my property but I was pretty much overcome by the heat. I did get the Farmi winch hooked to the tractor to yard out the small stuff but nearly passed out from the heat. First day for the A/C in the house.
@@nhhbbyloggr5022 Yes, the oppressive heat of summer can be too much, for even the toughest of us! Hopefully, you can work on it in the early evenings, so you can relax a little, as you bring this beast to its trees, oops, I mean knees.
