How I Remove Stains and Fix the Vintage Linens I Buy
Sigh. Twix. Really?!? Oh, well.
I’ve had a lot of questions about how I get the stains out of the linens I thrift. Sadly, there is not one true method. And since, chances are, you have no idea what the stain is or how long it’s been there, it can be a challenge. Products I use include:
Bleach
Oxi Clean
Woolite ( to wash them in)
Follow me on Instagram and check out my Etsy shop. I have a new line of garments and bags made from vintage linens coming in October.

    Your cat talks to you like mine talks to me! Mine is black/white, a tuxedo cat. I love the old linens, but sometimes if you buy them online you get odors and sometimes it's hard to get rid of them. I will only buy them now if they say no odors. I have learned!! Ha! I did see another You Tuber who said for stains, she put in the sink some Cascade dishwashing liquid and Biz with the hottest water and let it sit for 20-30 minutes to get the stains out. I tried that on some and it worked. I couldn't find the Biz, so I used Oxi Clean powder instead of and it took the stains out. I have some more I need to do. I love the old linens, they are so pretty, and thanks for the advice!!

    That is helpful -- thanks! A question, and sorry if I missed it, but does the direction of the stretch when sewing on knits? If so, what are some of the best ways to think about putting different pieces together?

    • @lynnephelps2370
      @lynnephelps2370 9 дней назад

      I'm not sure what you're asking. All knits have crossways (horizontal) stretch but it is important to have the crossways stretch (selvedge to selvedge) going sideways around the body for the greatest comfort. Knit patterns may be too tight if the crossways stretch runs vertically on the garment. Many knits don't stretch much vertically. 4-way (or vertical AND horizontal stretch) is less common, and needed for swimwear, yoga pants, leotards, and other close-fitting items designed for movement. So yes, the direction you orient your pattern pieces is important. HTH!

    • @carriemeaway9837
      @carriemeaway9837 8 дней назад

      @@anirabunbury4940 the stretch should always go around your body. Normally, this is selvage to selvage, so if using pattern pieces, the grainline arrow should be parallel to the selvage. When sewing seams together, I have found that it does not matter in which direction you sew. Just don’t pull on your fabric as you sew or you will probably end up with a wavy seams.

    how do you determine grain on sheets? LOVE the channel btw

    • @paulinelarson465
      @paulinelarson465 Месяц назад

      The horizontal grain is slightly stretchier than the vertical grain. Go to fabric store and practice on new, bolted fabric. Pull on the known vertical and horizontal grains until you can differentiate. Vertical grain is equivalent to the straight-of-grain marking on patterns. All fabrics react the same way, even knits. Knits do, however, also have an up or down to them. For up-down orientation, look at construction/ orientation of the knit stitches. Observe loops in a bulky sweater to know which way is UP. Some fabrics, like corduroy, velvet and flannel have "nap". Run your hand lightly over the vertical grain and you will notice the surface 'fuzz' moving up/down. Usually a napped fabric's 'nap' should run, lay, downward. Make sure that the 'nap' orientation is consistent or the garment will look weird.

    I just made a circle skirt from a 1960s sheet. I’m short, and the sheet was large enough that I was able to get a floor length skirt without a seam. I started middle school in 1969. I am in love with textiles from late 60s through early 70s. It’s always a joy to find those sheets. unfortunately, this sheet had a little polyester in it, but since it won’t be tightly fitting my body, it likely won’t make me hot. No, you can make a half circle or 3/4 circle skirt if you need to remove a stain. I don’t like cutting up some precious handwork but much of it won’t get any love in a drawer. I do have textiles from other countries which are of a type that are no longer practice, and I don’t cut them. I imagine myself a textile collector on a very small scale.
