    Golden has a run every year (called the "Climb"), to the top of this mountain. It humbles those who "think" they are super fit runners (like me). I was running 20 miles a week for years, and I worked in this run one year. I WAS greatly humbled.

    looks like he stalled a wing tip due to poor approach . He turned when he should have been touching down and he flaired quite high up causing a lot of turbulance on the wing. straight approach low to the ground and push up when at landing/or approaching stall speed.

    I'm looking at this with interest, I'm still learning my take off and landing in a small school hill. If I analyze this I would think you were maybe long, you pushed your bar and nose to much, not enough speed and not enough head wind for going so slow. Needless to say I would like to avoid such a landing.

    • @flytavo
      @flytavo Месяц назад

      Don’t over analyze. Complacency is the answer. I actually did an effort (attempt of slow low turn) to cause this. For real I didn’t wanted to land long and far from the cooler with beer. Follow the advice of your instructor. Always land with speed and straight and the sport will be safe.

    So here is something I learned by watching the Italians land: fly with high speed close to the ground to get into ground-effect and then change position and smoothly push out. That way if you stall the glider the ground is only a few inches away! Here is a video (though I strongly disagree with the low-to-the-ground-turns!) ruclips.net/video/5u--RwgkTpw/видео.html

    Definitely a good lesson. Broken down tubes, some damage to gear is a cheap way to learn valuable lessons. Glad you are ok. I’m not a HG pilot but plan on learning, I am however a PG pilot (P3, with enough hours for P4 just haven’t taken the test yet, I have all requirements except one, I need to fly 2 more canopies before i can get my p4) but that being said I’ve had a couple “cheap lessons” myself, luckily nothing more than some scratches, light bruises, and a couple hours getting my glider out of a tree. Actually no damage to any of my gear, but valuable lessons learned. Complacency sneaks up on you, and you can think you’re not doing anything that is any different than what you do every time, but like you said, high density altitude will definitely increase your stall speed, and you might be able to float down like that in a valley that’s 2,000’ msl, but 5,000’ msl is a completely different story. Glad that you came out unscathed, at least mostly.

  • @sabhishek1

    Thanks for posting this, Tavo! (We met at crested butte a few years ago :). It looks like your glider had too little energy when you attempted that left turn. You were already on the downtubes while 15ft in the air. It was going to be bad even if you did not initiate the turn, as there was no energy left to flare. I would suggest getting into ground effect with lot more energy (speed, bar pressure) and do not get on the downtubes fully till you are about ready to flare. I can understand how fatigue of a long flight can cloud your judgement. Thus practice practice practice, so it becomes a muscle memory :)

    Good on you for posting this along with the mea culpa. Ignore the negative comments as about 98% of them have never flown a hang glider and have no clue what it's like. I flew them for about 10 years in the 70's and 80' starting with a 17' standard and finishing with a FD Demon. It's a demanding, unforgiving, exhilarating sport, but you've got to be on your game 100% of the time. Clear skies to you.

    • @flytavo
      @flytavo 8 месяцев назад

      By feel. Not kidding. We do have airspeed, VSI (vario) altimeter, HSI but you only use those for navigation. You never look at the speed when landing. Actually when not being sloppy like I was in this video, you should get to ground effect with excess speed and bleed it out at 4 feet or so from the ground.
