Interesting thoughts on Henry James. I read The Turn of the Screw years ago before I knew much about him or other Victorian literature so one to come back to.

This was so great! And yes, I feel like the thing that has stuck with me the most from News from Nowhere is William Morris’s certainly that socialism would make all women beautiful. Oh, the Victorians 🤦‍♀️ If you have a pdf of Aimee Furness, I would love that read that one.

Sooo glad you loved the Whale Rider! I hadn't realised the audiobook was an updated version, that's how I experienced it and I thought the narrator did a great job but now I'm intrigued about how it might be different 👀

Such an interesting, varied bunch of options as always 😄 glad the research is letting you back toward enjoying some fiction too. I have read Elatsoe & House of Shattered Wings, and liked both. Elatsoe is a pretty different take of all the elements you can expect from standard urban fantasy, I loved that even though she's a teenager it isn't loaded with angst or hiding things from parents, and the adults around her are super supportive. House of Shattered Wings, I read with a group and I think we all found the writing kind of slides thru your brain 😅 it was hard to get a hold of things for a bit, but I did get increasingly until the story as it went on.

Interesting what you said about reading different translations to get a better picture of the source material. That makes total sense but I'd never really thought about it before. I find translation so fascinating.

I wasn't keen on The Secret History, probably for very similar reasons. I do really want to read Villette now though!

I think Old English could be worth looking into for a language that isn't so comprehensible to others. Same roots as German, but I think pretty different from both modern English and German.

"donna sweet" lolol... another weird coincidence, i was watching a very funny snarky riverdale analysis video essay yesterday😳 re: languages i wonder if there are other ancient versions of current languages like the ancient greek situation that would be far enough removed from current speakers to not be understood but also have enough record to learn them fully? i'm also thinking with so much heartbreak of all the lost indigenous languages and also how communities are trying to revitalize them which is incredible, but there's probably so many places where there would be no chance of encountering a speaker in the wild :((
