Red Hat Shoots Itself in the Foot Again
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Red Hat shoots itself in the foot again by announcing that they would no longer allow the general public to download the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This will cause problems for the RHEL clone publishers, such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. It has also caused a huge backlash from Linux users, and at least some have already decided to switch from the RHEL ecosystem to community-base...

Demystifying Ubuntu's Uncomplicated Firewall
Просмотров 7832 года назад
Ubuntu's Uncomplicated Firewall, or ufw, is a handy front-end for either iptables or nftables. As the name suggests, ufw vastly simplifies the process of setting up a basic Linux firewall. You can also set up more complex firewall configurations, but Ubuntu doesn't do a good job of showing you how to do that. Note that ufw is also available on Debian and Debian-based Linux distros as well as on...

Keep Linux Processes Running When You Log Out
Absolutely not. After the kernel maintainers purge, Linux is a losing preposition
I think I asked the question, I was thinking of python too. Shell's piping abstraction is so good that I use that concept in other programming languages.
If the shell command line matters, then wouldn't shell scripting matter?
If it works, it's good!
Hey Donald. I've been experimenting with ansible playbooks which can push configs to thousands of target machines. I'm currently using Virtualbox to push linux configs out to target machines, and it works great and is quite easy to grasp. The idea is similar to bash scripts. Have you given it a go? P.S. I purchased your e-book "Mastering Linux Security and Hardening" and I'm slowly working through the labs and I'm learning a lot, so thanks.
That is one incendiary thumbnail text. Cheers mate!
Yeah, it is. But, it it's also the exact question that the viewer of my previous video asked.
@@beginlinuxguru7354 😆
Just bought the book, The paper version (And with the e-book) I will soon start to read it! Thanks!
Excellent! Congrats on finishing your book. I'm making my way through your "Mastering Linux Security and Hardening" book, and it's fantastic. I'm sure this one is as well.
My thought is to avoid all RHEL/RedHat related. Red Hat is trying to extend their market to the SME space. They plan to gobble it up. They also want to capture more enterprises. They will not stop. The drama will ebb and flow, but Red Hat WILL subsume or consume Rocky and Alma. Red Hat Dev. will see the license numbers change. First 12 from 16. Then ever downward to 5 or less. If you stay in Red Hat’s realm, you’re gonna be sorry.
Great stuff, I will check it out, thanks! :)
Impressive content, BeginLinux Guru. Looking forward to your next upload. I tapped the thumbs up icon on your video. Keep up the fantastic work! Your insights into shell scripting for various environments are invaluable. Have you considered including a section on best practices for debugging scripts, particularly in cross-platform scenarios?
First, many thanks for the kind words. And yes, I did include one chapter on cross-platform portability, and one on debugging.
Linux newbie here (but had some Unix grasp long time ago). I am looking forward for your book plus i've already subscribed to your channel. My best wishes for your new book!
Isn't this like very obsolete? Anyway, good luck with the book, I might buy it.
Oh, no. It's not obsolete at all. I mean, shell scripting is a very old language that's been around forever, but it's still very powerful. Yeah, you could do a lot of the same things in more modern languages like Python, but shell scripting is way easier to learn, and is faster to code. And, shell scripting uses the same programming constructs that more advanced languages use. So, learning shell scripting as a first programming language is a great way to learn the basic principles of programming that you can apply to those other languages. Anyway, thanks for the question!
your sound is utterly broken
That's weird, because it sounds okay here on my end. Anyway, I'll replace this video with a new one next week, and I'll use a different microphone.
Bummer. $98 on Amazon in Australia. I’ll have to pass for now. Who makes up these prices?
@@VideoGigs I have no idea. Your best bet is to wait until the book is released next week, to see if the price drops. Also, check out the price on the Packtpub site as well as Amazon to see if there's a price difference.
Excelente libro, saludos desde Colombia :)

Outstanding sir
Great Video! Thanks for mentioning your channel in Mastering Linux Security and Hardening. I might never have found it otherwise.
Igual yo, encontré este canal gracias al libro
Good one
I've hunted all day for Chkservice for My Linux-Debian 12 and can't find it anywhere....? =) Something must have happened since May of 2018...?

From 1:55 to 4:35 or a full 160 seconds of light beer Jedi mind tricks. Viewer beware.
Ubuntu server, curious that they decided to 86 an offering for time setup during install. I guess simpler to delete it altogether than throw in go/nogo toggle. Nice video 👍
Yeah, I don't understand that decision either. It just seems weird that they did that.
systemd 'get' and 'set' echo PowerShell. Do systemd's 'ctl' functions chain together via pipelines, leveraging object-property blobs like PowerShell? Maybe an analogue to 'get-member' resolving tool is available.
No, the systemctl commands are all stand-alone commands that you can't chain into each other.
Nice video 👍 How about a pinned comment re: 3:26 correction (RefuseManualStop=yes in the auditd.service file in RH Linux but not necessarily other distros) ?
Yeah, I had forgotten that that was in this video. I'll take care of that when I get the chance.
👍 helpful video other viewer - good comment about RefuseManualStop in auditd.service file.
Thank you... You created this video seven years ago, at that time I was a child.
Thanks!
Oracle Enterprise Linux. 'Nough said...
Isn't the Fedora Linux the FREE version of R.E.L.?
Not exactly. It's sponsored by the Red Hat company, but it's more an experimental distro to evaluate technologies that Red Hat is considering for inclusion into RHEL. I like it for desktop usage, but I wouldn't use it for a critical-mission server.
Recommending a book about Systemd wearing a Slackware t-shirt. LMAO.
Yeah, I like irony.
Hi Donnie. Just discovered your channel and I like your way of explanation. Could you please make a dedicated video about nftables for beginners. I feel there are plenty of videos which do not explain either the concepts behind it or the commands only and I believe one video explaining all this in such a way that beginners can start using nftables right away for simple cases would be good idea.
I clicked on his series over all the others solely based on the greatest beard on software development history.
Nice series for someone new to Linux. Quick tip to make this easier to look at, install 'htop' and you get a very clear, coloured, interactive menu in the shell where you can easily search/filter all the system processes and see what's going on a lot more easily.
Is there a reason why you use that HP model? I’m new to the channel
It's mainly because I got a really good deal on it from eBay. A new model that's speced out like this one would be about $2000. I only have about $700 tied up in this one. Other than that, it's a really good machine, and I'm quite happy with it.
Donnie ! .... what in the name of the creator of Linux have you thought, when you selected your terminal colors? .... Dark pink on pitch black ... not very eye-friendly.
how to know how many spacebar taps are required in text editor to divide columns ? Before explaining complicated matters, pls first address the simple ones, otherwise we all drive an Indy 500 car, yet pushing it without rubber
Lol! Started reading your book on safari books and in first chapter there is mention of this channel and i subscribe
Hey, that's very cool. I didn't even realize that my books were on Safari. Anyway, thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the subscription!
I don't think so...Debían still using outdated kernel
what is the link to it so I can report it?
Unfortunately, I don't have the links.
In your vid: All is brown. The car is brown. The book-cover is brown. That's OK. But, SUSE-Green is more beautiful. Green symbolizes sustainability. (Happy with SUSE since 2001.)
openSUSE is good. I'm running it here on one of my workstations.
how to notify using mail with journalctl myservice.service and restart the service any idea?
I bought the e-book version and it is absolutely GREAT. Many thanks.
00:19:00 There is a way, there is a way. Copy and paste works between other apps and Vim. In Vim press i to switch into insert mode and then paste using "Ctrl + Shift + v" shortcut to paste from the clipboard. You just need to add an extra shift key. This is the way we can also Paste in the terminal. So, it is not a Vim specific though.
Yeah, the real difference isn't with vim, but with the different desktop environments. I normally use lxterminal on Fedora with LXDE, and with it I can paste into vim with just the normal right-click menu. But my video creation machine is loaded with Lubuntu, which uses another terminal that doesn't work like that. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for that when I made this video.
Does the 1 minute, 5 minute and 15 minute mean the time u have the computer on?
No, that's just a measure of the load averages for the past one minute, five minutes, and 15 minutes. It has nothing to do with how long the computer has been running.
@@beginlinuxguru7354 gracias!

Yeah, I with you there.
They are all con artists !
james okeef showed everyone what red hat actually thinks about their core customer base. Now they will have to create a new customer base.
That's interesting. I like O'keefe, but I haven't seen his videos on that. Now that I know, I'll have to look them up. Many thanks!
Okay, I finally watched the O'keefe videos, and you're right. They're pretty explosive. It's a shame, because Red Hat used to be a great company, even if it wasn't always perfect. Now though, IBM is ruining Red Hat in every way possible. I find it all very sad.
My daily driver has been Fedora for over a year and really hope that Red Hat and Evilcorp (IBM) don't pull developers and money from Fedora.
I hear you. The LXDE spin of Fedora is one of my favorite workstation distros, and I would hate to lose it.
