    I just returned from visiting both Bilbao and San Sebastián. Very different cities and experiences. The beauty of San Sebastián was mind blowing. Being a life long admirer of Eduardo Chillida and seeing his foundation, just a few minutes outside of San Sebastián, was nothing less than a spiritual experience. Don't miss visiting this area.

    For the past weeks, I'm not sure how there's a surge of Lux videos on my feed. All were encouraging to the point I told my bf that we should try looking for a Lux job. And being the richest country in EU, I'm aware of the hight cost of living. But thanks to your video, I got more insights of actual Lux living. Now it's making me think twice. Yes, we are looking for a better career opportunity. But we're also looking for a great place to live in. I easily get bored, so not enough places and events to go to is a big no. I don't want my bf to blame me for recommending boring and expensive country. Don't want to be part of that divorce rate either. 🥹 So, again, thanks for the heads up! Thanks to algorithm as well 😅

    Find a place out of the city, Sandweiller, niedanvan or even Bereldange, public transport is really good, so living out of the city is no problem, if you’ve got a car, like any city, parking is a true pain. Remember there is one heck of a lot of cross border workers, from France, Germany and Belgium so driving at commuter times is mental....get the bus or train.....when I lived there I purchased a scooter just to get in the city, parking for motorbikes is free😂🥳 and lots of bike only spaces too. There are Aldi supermarkets and really expensive ones too, the ones that each Saturday the locals and top earners like to dress up and prove to the rest that they exist😳😫😫😫 If you fly into Lux, don’t get a taxi from the airport, use the bus, it’s only a 15 min journey to the centre city and is way way cheaper. When the new airport terminal was constructed it was planned to have a train link to the city but the taxi union blocked it😳😖😖😖 a lot of local hotels have a link service too, which is free, just ask.... There’s even a dedicated British shop, on the outskirts of the city, expensive but good. Try out the Grund, for an evening out, the Britannia pub, obviously British, maybe not bobs, brilliant food, on the American theme and the irish pub, locally called the Pyg, short for Pygmalion...and of course Scott’s bar... Be prepared for a fun night 🥰😂

  • @qbarnes1893
    @qbarnes1893 2 месяца назад

    Iff your skilled, go to Australia. Worked in Lux for a long time, no more, it’s way way more expensive than you’d believe, but it’s social system is excellent. If your looking for a decent sized 1 bed apart close to the city then be prepared to pay up to 2k per month😳😱 if you can find something small for under 1500euros your doing well. Top tip, if your thinking of commuting, don’t choose France to live, Germany is way better.

  • @qbarnes1893
    @qbarnes1893 2 месяца назад

    An honest personal account of this country. Spent 20+ years working there, started a a skilled engineer and was truly shocked after my first months salary, too over 10 yrs to equal my original pre Lux wages. That said, the social system is really really good, great hospitals and brilliant public transport. Because of its very nature and size, it can become ‘boring’ but then, can’t any country? It’s how you live your life that matters.... Got some amazing memories of Lux but happier now I’ve moved away,

    Sorry David, some corrections. 07:49 Is not that Fortaleza de Santa Cruz de Barra? A bit too far Rio de Janeiro from the Mediterranean sea. 08:40 That lighthouse is in the same island, but 17 km west. Hard to believe you can see Africa from there when earth curvature, at sea level, barely allows you to see at 5 km distance and from there to Africa there's 235 km... You can see the mountains of Africa (like Jbel Mouse, 840 m height) from Tarifa, Cádiz. But that's only 20 km and the mountains elevation is quite serious. How you see the relations between the Basque Country ans the Central Government of Spain is quite wrong and quite superficial. There is too much History (centuries) behind and tons of shit vomited from the Spanish nationalism (especially the far-right one) and the Basque nationalism (right-wing, left wing, middle wing). The first ones use to complain about "some kind of new privileges" that are not new and not exactly "privileges" because they hate everything different of "their Spain Kingdom". And the Basques have some right to talk about repression and persecution, in especial since Franco's dictatorship. This is a very long discussion the size of northern Ireland or Scotland with the UK. The Basque Country, the little, small, Basque Country, is the fifth autonomy in GNP. In other terms, 2 million people out of 47 million population (that's around a 4%) produce more less (depends on the years) almost 7% of the total richness. Why? less political corruption, more industrial fabric, a good tourism: gastro, culture, nature... no hooligans, crazy parties, drugs and alcohol. And about the Independence thing, only 30% of today Basques believe that is a good idea. I'm sure some far-right voter will feel the need to answer me about this. I'll just grab a coffee and sit here. I almost forget about famous Basques you didn't mention: Paco Rabanne, Balenciaga (fashion designers), Simón Bolívar (Basque ascendant and Liberator of America from the Spanish Kingdom), Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xabier (both co-founders of Society of Jesus Order), Edurne Pasaban (first woman to make the fourteen eight-thousanders peaks), our famous Basque Cuisine with international known chefs (Arzak, Eneko Atxa, Subijana, Berasategi, Aduriz...), artists Maurice Ravel, Oteiza, Chillida... And two of the best European Museums: the Fine Arts Museum and Guggenheim Bilbao. And yes, Javier/Xabier, García, Eche-whatever surnames, Aguirre, Iñaki, Natxo, and a long list of names and family names have their roots in Basques, as well as Spanish (and other languages) have many words (and rules) from Basque language: izquierda, five vowel sounds, mochila, mus, pacharán, bizarro, perro, etc. The average Basque loves Cantabria, not the same to their Franco nostalgia you can even feel today with some intensity. And..... That's all. Nice video BTW!

    Hi! About those old windowed facades, some landlords get permission from the town hall to add the balconies to the room. I have seen this several times: the renovation creates a cosy reading area with natural light, a space for chatting or just a larger living room. · The citizens of Bilbao are ashamed of Zubizuri Bridge. It is a catastrophic bridge designed by a botched architect. Probably the worst architect in the world. Always with cost overruns, doubling or tripling budgets, buildings with leaks, facades falling off, no emergency exits, auditoriums that only have one lift, expensive mechanical elements that never work, etc. If it were up to me, I would dynamite it. Any other bridge in the city is better and/or even more beautiful. · 10:49 two buildings, in front of the Iberdrola Tower, designed by Rafael Moneo and Alvaro Siza, two of the 7 Pritzker Prize winners in Bilbao. · Puppy (we say poo-pee 🙃) was made in 1992, but is there since the Guggen was established in 1997. · Actually Don Diego is not the founder of the city but the Lord who gave the category of Villa with privileges similar to the ones of a city. That means that Bilbao existed very very long time before as a port town. It's circa 1300 that the city wall is built up surrounding what today is called Casco Viejo or Siete Calles (Old Town or Seven Streets = the first seven streets of the city).The street you are biking when you said the name Don Diego, is in fact Gran vía (we just say this for shorting) de Don Diego López de Haro. · 16:07 that's the Palacio Euskalduna para Congresos y Música or Euskalduna Jauregia (in Basque). It was awarded as the best congress centre in the world in 2002. It has several performance halls with seating capacity from 600 seats downwards and an auditorium known for its excellent acoustics with a capacity of 2164 people and a stage of 1770 sq m. The opera season is celebrated here from Autumn to Spring. · 16:41 on the left the Itsasmuseum (Maritime or Sea Museum), on the right the red crane by name Carola. Formerly that space from there to (behind you) the Deusto Bridge was where the Euskalduna Shipyards were located, and that is where the Auditorium took its name. · The Vizcaya Bridge or Transporter Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (in the Industrial Heritage category). It was the first ferry bridge in the world and today, I believe, only 8 are still in operation.

    Bilbao is not the capital of the Basque Country. However, it is the biggest city in the said region / community. Vitoria is the "de facto" capital city of The Basque Country. The Basque Country comprises of 3 provinces which are: Bizkaia (Capital City: Bilbao), Alava (Capital City Vitoria) and Gipuzkoa (Capital city: Donostia / San Sebastian).

    • @oskarobit
      @oskarobit Месяц назад

      Not close to accurate dude. Gasteiz/Vitoria is the official capital of the autonomy; the seat of the Basque Parliament is located there. Bilbao is considered by some people the "de facto" capital for its population and in terms of its turnover and business network, and now also in terms of culture/tourism. In the other hand, after Francoism Spain was divided in autonomies with no so much fortune. The Basque Country is historically between France and Spain. In Spain, it comprises the autonomous regions of Euskal Herria (‘País Vasco’) (Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba) and 'Navarra'. In France there are three more provinces: Lapurdi, Nafarroa Beherea and Zuberoa.
