Allan Holdsworth: Guitar Chad Wackerman: Drums Jimmy Johnson: Bass Mar 25, 1984, Hunt's Club VT This version of “Devil Take the Hindmost” has some fun rhythmic interplay (there's a funny little cock-rock groove for a sec in the beginning of the 2nd chorus) - and Allan's tone seems a bit more "sinister" (?) somehow. Allan Holdsworth: Guitar Chad Wackerman: Drums Jimmy Johnson: Bass June 19, 2007, BB Kings NYC (The title card says July, that was a typo, it is June) "The Insomniac" is a tune which has never been released in its studio form on any Holdsworth record. One of the special things here is the way Allan uses the harmonizer effect to intermittently "highlight" a few phrases here and there. It's subtl...

Allan Holdsworth: Guitar Jon Hiseman: Drums Paul Williams: Vocals Mark Clarke: Bass February 11, 1973, St. Gallen, Switzerland, Kongresshaus Schützengarten The song "Brothers" comes from Tempest's debut album from 1973. In this band Allan got the opportunity to play in a kind of progressive "acid rock" band. Allan soon quit (to be replaced by Ollie Halsall) but during live concerts before that ...

Allan Holdsworth with Steve Hunt (keys), Gary Husband (drums), Skúli Sverrisson (bass) September 13, 1992, Chicago (China Club) This is a super-rare live version of the extended suite from the album "Metal Fatigue". Allan delivers a beautifully lyric solo in the first part, followed by Steve Hunt navigating the Holdsworthian spaceways in his own way. Allan dedicated this song to his father (tec...

Allan Holdsworth: Guitar Gary Husband: Drums Skuli Sverrisson: Bass Steve Hunt: Keyboards Here's a great live version of "Pud Wud". Allan recorded an earlier live take in 1990 ("THEN! I like it when he takes a deep dive and it's not so clear if he will make it or not. That's...

Mate, this isn't Holdsworth. He'd left the band and suggested his student to join instead.
I love the chords at 9:17
Oh wow….what a prog influence! This was wonderful!
WHAT A SOUND FROM THE WHOLE BAND.........! spectacular
What a solo! Like a man possessed! Hahahhah! I love it!
This is truly mind-boggling! What a crazy guitar solo that was!
Fantastic. I wonder if the was part of the "Snakes And Ladders" album, or the other unreleased one?
Thanks so much!💚👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼👋🏼
Thanks so much for posting this rare gem.
Absolutely astounding- thank you so much for posting this, and all the other great performances of Allan.
Thanks so much for sharing this musical treasure.
There was a young guitarist watching this gig and he was mightily impressed with Holdsworth... quote...he ripped a whole in the guitarists space time continuum....the guy in the audience... Joe Satriani
Yet another reminder of how magical a musician Allan really was; every show and recording was a renewal of the greatest inspiration imaginable. I can't imagine getting over the loss; the most important musician to me, out of many greats; he had something, as Santana once said, totally beautiful.
Super cool. thank you for sharing.
Saw Allan on this tour at the Arnolfini in Bristol. In addition to Allan’s stunning performances, I was also taken but this young drummer who hit the kit so hard, breaking a stick in the process, which flew into the audience and was caught by someone I became great friends with some years later. Allan didn’t look happy on the gig and appeared to be drinking quite a lot. I learnt he was fed up with his struggles in the U.K. and not long after moved to the States. Of course Allan continued to play with that young drummer for decades to come, the uber talented Gary Husband. RIP Maestro🎸🤘🏻
In those days, seeing Gary in a small venue was to take your life in your hands, especially if you sat close to the stage. At one gig I went to, Gary lost so many sticks that Allan had to ask the audience, "Can we have our sticks back", like a kid who had kicked a football over neighbour's fence! Some of the best gigs I ever saw, that trio.
Hey Tony How there is no live video footage from the 1975-1976 era you guys knew that you have to keep this a secret and not film because it was too good to be true is that true? @antoniotonynewtonmusic
This is Pure Gold
Paul Carmichael on bass !? This is rare ! Thanks for shareing!
People who got to see this line-up live were ultra lucky
The funky swing everybody is locked in from the start, driven by Wackerman, is addictive af
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
The ever expanding
Long live the legend
The musicality of Vinnie with Allan at this point in their carrier is at an all time and being musicians who are considered being one of the best on the instruments they play and having them come together in the late 80s instead of the late 70s Is much better "coming from a prog fusion fan" I have to go with this period because of the musicianship level and musical approach by this time. Having them play at this level is hard to think of musicians who can take music to these heights. Just makes you think of If they had an opportunity to preform with a concert AV recording rig would of been one of the best live musical treasures on film.
Jesus, is that Alan Pasqua? What a beast...aghhh! So fucking good.
Good stuff
Kewl again.
Cool
Love love all things Allan Holdsworth, especially early IOU material with Jeff Berlin. It literally changed my life musically. I’ve never heard anything the same since. This is high stuff, great composition, improvisation, great tones, all of it is exemplary.🎉❤
My favorite track ever! And Live!!! Wow!!! Allan greatest musician ever existed!!! Was fan since I was teenager and I'm always fan despite the Maestro left us couple of years ago. Stay my hero forever!
as much as i AH did subsequently his IOU stuff just gets to me
Agreed. For all that he suffered in the UK, I think his music lost something when he moved to LA.
Holy flaming fingertips Batman!! he is utterly in a league of his OWN!!!! There aren't enough exclamation points in the universe.
And when you think about what everyone else was doing in the 70s and 80s???
Holdsworth is just So far ahead of anyone else in every respect! The more I hear (of his music and of everyone else's music) the more I realize he is at his own level entirely. No wonder thousands upon thousands of musicians (and growing) are studying his music and learning his stuff decades later.
God!!! What can I say? I don’t know what it is about this song: the cord progression, a simple melody that seems to be rather powerful, the interplay between the musicians, the solos that are full of feeling? It’s just I’ve herd the original version of this song countless times, and although it is kind of short, it always seems to put me in this mood that I can’t describe, like a mix of hope and dreaming and optimism… it puts chills down my spine. I had what I think was a head trauma after a stupid but difficult four wheeler accident, and I’ve lost touch of time, awareness, even a bit of memory, till yesterday, and I am still recovering from an ever present sense of frustration and confusion. Today that I got back into my phone again, I decided to listen to the Believe It version of this song, and it got me in the mood as I was talking about. Bun man! A few seconds after the keyboard solo by Allan, I suddenly started crying and kept doing so for like a minute. Sorry for the somewhat long comment, but my question is: Do any of you know where to get this album At Village Gate, either as a download or a physical copy like a CD? I'm asking because most of the few recordings that I think I’ve found of this particular day on youtube sound more heavily distorted or pitch altered, and I’m afraid of just going to the first Discogs link and buying a version of the album that I am not happy with. This recording sounds perfect to me, and I would definitely get a free version of the album in a streaming platform if I could. But this people are real inspiration to me, and I would buy it if I could. And apart from this date, can any of you refer me to any live album or recording of this band to listen to? Thank you.
Michael would turn in his grave if he thought you'd credited one of Don Grolnick's greatest songs to him. They were close personal friends and Don was Michael's mentor. Other than that, Allan's playing rocks and really captures Don Grolnick's harmonic sensibilities, but Chad's drumming is frankly wooden, despite Alan Pasqua's best efforts to get him to swing. A mixed bag.
Saw Holdsworth & Bruford in 81 or 2 in SF @ a tight little club on Broadway.. Fabulous!! but separately. Allan with his band, Bill with Crimson. Both Outrageous Shows!! The Talent Oozing from those Two Projects was Overwhelmingly Awesome & Spendid to Behold. Thankyou to All of Them... 4/9/24.. Illinois, USA..
What instrument is that?
Thank you for sharing such an amazing music.
nice!
This track by Allan is new to me! I once thought about making my own (metal?) cover of Coltrane's music and this exact track was the first candidate. A Love Supreme is a materpiece, but this part (the second one, if I'm not mistaken) is some kind of a message from a different dimension.
All the amazing nuances of the greatest jazz would be completely lost in a "metal cover". Might as well do JS Bach in the style of Kiss, or Van Gogh in the style of Yoko Ono; the visual Yoko, not her "music".
@@Gregorypeckory it depends on how you rethink (not cover) it.
@@MrTarlecon you're the one that said you wanted to cover it. Now it's "rethink". That's fine but next time you want to correct somebody on their word choice, maybe make sure they weren't quoting you, because you corrected me on the word you chose. I don't doubt you could use a jazz melody or progression for the basis of a metal tune. It just wouldn't be jazz at all. The rhythmic and dynamic approach that requires close listening and attention to subtleties of all the players in jazz is pretty much the opposite of the sledgehammer athleticism of every metal genre I've ever been exposed to. But if there's some new form of metal that values subtlety, dynamics and swing, I will have to reevaluate my view. Not being a fan I can't really keep up with every sub genre. But if there's one that's compatible with jazz, I don't even know what would make it recognizable as metal.
I saw Holdsworth live a half dozen times and this lineup was my favorite concert out of all of them! A weird side note: When I went inside and got ready to pay, the guy collecting at the door said, "five dollars." I said, "WHAT?! That has to be a mistake!" Well as it turned out, the first half of the show was a Chad drum clinic (which I was aware of, but I showed up in time for the band concert). The guy at the door said it was $15 for the clinic and the show and $5 for just the show. RIDICULOUS! How many hundreds of dollars does it cost to see someone like Taylor Swift?! But that's the world we live in. The first and last time I was ever mad for being under charged!
Having seen Allan six times & having watched him closely mostly from close up. First time with nucleus in 1979 was one of the best, I realised he was playing like a man possessed. As they said of Paganini selling his soul to the devil to play as he did. Not that I'm into mystical explanations. It wasn't affectation as with so many other players. He was digging far far far deeper than anyone else & that most players in comparison don't improvise. They just copy each other. Unlike unique one in ten billion genius Allan
The most perfect synergy. a band of real listeners. Allan is joyous.
not perfect - but pretty cool
Elton Dean is great at comping on the Fender Rhodes
Beautiful stuff. Pasqua's comping behind Holdsworth's solo is perfect.
I thought that Allan wasn't in the group by Sept 76?
I think the passing of Allan is the end of an era of the greatest improvised yet compositional highly original music. No one else comes close.
It truly does feel like that. Allan truly was the perfect cocktail of a musician. The perfect blend of inhuman technique, alien harmonic language and phrasing, and the artistic vision to write and play what HE wanted to, no matter the possible financial loss from not “confirming”. Truly a once-in-a-millennia human being, and with a level of humbleness and kindness not found in almost anyone else. I hope wherever he is, he can look back and be proud of his work here on Earth, as he has touched the hearts and souls of so many.
