WOW! Antonio Tony Newton...You guys were fabulous that night. I love that album. Your bass playing was and is incredible. Velvet Darkness was the first Allan Holdsworth Album that I purchased as a teen. Incredibly, it was in the cut-out bin's and I went back and bought a few more copies for my dad and a couple of friends who were musicians. Thanks for sharing this information with us!
I was a 16 year old kid, a guitarist who sat every Monday ( ? ) night by the radio in my bedroom listening to the “ Live” concerts from the Village Gate that were broadcast by WRVR….Les Davis……..and I recorded them on my tape recorder……….when this concert started I lost my mind, called my musician friends and told them to turn on WRVR.I had that cassette tape for years……..life changing moments………thanks to Tony, Tony, Alan and Allan. Forty six years later and I’m still the 16 year old kid sitting on the edge of his bed hanging on every note. Great memory.
the description for this amazing clip says "Here's Allan on his first tour with Tony Williams" ... I recall seeing the Lifetime at a Long Island (NY) club called My Father's Place not too long after the "Emergency" and "Turn it Over" albums were out, so I was very much interested in seeing if the power of the LPs came across live ... the group that performed, however, was a quartet that featured a tall, lanky guitarist whose name I didn't recognize (AH) and a bass player named Bunny Bunuel (who wore glasses with a striking bright red frame and had a scowling look on his face most of the performance) ... of course, 10 seconds into Allan's playing and I was floored, just adding to the exhilarating overload of seeing Tony live for the first time I'd love to hear from any commenters who were at -- or know of -- this particular gig to put it in the proper place in the group's time line
There was a young guitarist watching this gig and he was mightily impressed with Holdsworth... quote...he ripped a whole in the guitarists space time continuum....the guy in the audience... Joe Satriani
In the very closing passage, Allan signals his love for 'trane, the best voice there was and is, and his desire to take that forward; did he?. So brave, so normal, so foolish, so english... !!! Love to Allan from a fan !
God!!! What can I say? I don’t know what it is about this song: the cord progression, a simple melody that seems to be rather powerful, the interplay between the musicians, the solos that are full of feeling? It’s just I’ve herd the original version of this song countless times, and although it is kind of short, it always seems to put me in this mood that I can’t describe, like a mix of hope and dreaming and optimism… it puts chills down my spine. I had what I think was a head trauma after a stupid but difficult four wheeler accident, and I’ve lost touch of time, awareness, even a bit of memory, till yesterday, and I am still recovering from an ever present sense of frustration and confusion. Today that I got back into my phone again, I decided to listen to the Believe It version of this song, and it got me in the mood as I was talking about. Bun man! A few seconds after the keyboard solo by Allan, I suddenly started crying and kept doing so for like a minute. Sorry for the somewhat long comment, but my question is: Do any of you know where to get this album At Village Gate, either as a download or a physical copy like a CD? I'm asking because most of the few recordings that I think I’ve found of this particular day on youtube sound more heavily distorted or pitch altered, and I’m afraid of just going to the first Discogs link and buying a version of the album that I am not happy with. This recording sounds perfect to me, and I would definitely get a free version of the album in a streaming platform if I could. But this people are real inspiration to me, and I would buy it if I could. And apart from this date, can any of you refer me to any live album or recording of this band to listen to? Thank you.
Wow! Astonishing stuff Allan is playing here. The entire band is so tight and so on point that the musicians can go off and add things, more like freestyling in the context of the song. Amazing recording! Thanks for sharing.
My favorite fusion album of all-time! Still have it on vinyl. Bought this in 1979 and I was instantly hooked on Holdsworth! Of course, I already loved Tony Williams the band was incredible, and you can now hear the less of the blues and the mature Holdsworth legato style with incredible FIRE!. Thank You!
I saw many of these early shows, we had bootleg cassette tapes of this exact sound. To this day, I’ve never heard ANYTHING LIKE THIS! Most amazing sound, band, I’ve ever heard or seen. Allan just goes off on this, Jeff Berlin’s bass and Wackerman’s drums create the most over the top rhythm section EVER. Your hearing extremely complicated, energetic and LOUD trio music being performed emotionally and with improvisational approach. EVH heard these guys and lost his mind, as did Rush, everybody else.
Well, this just made my day!! And to get the inside secret from Tony Newton that this was a warm up for their historic recording of one of the greatest jazz albums makes this a crazy historic document. THANKS!
A classic album..live wow.thank you posting this what a treat to hear this live.Everybody in that band was in equal standing, all for one and one for all.
Very interesting to listen this 'transition phase' of Allan's playing. He got some great classic rock licks and tone with Coltrane inpired lines. Amazing. Thx for posting.
@@radjet Chanced upon this last year. An undiscovered gem of an album hidden away for 40+yrs 😮 As a holdsworth fan of 42 years plus of TW this is some of my fav of them together ruclips.net/video/OnV6o_KDMHY/видео.html
This for me is EXACTLY like listening to Coltrane in his younger years when he was experimenting with trying to get his "sheets of Sound" technique together.........I see where Eddie Van Halen grabbed alot of his stuff,..and this is 1976.............And when Eddie heard this it was brand new,....NO ONE was playing like that!
Whoa !! There is hope for the internet ! (i've never heard this so i'm in hiding) ... this could be witness to the end of music as we know it ... ! These guys finished off music, giving us what we got today.... No-one else could play this s_it, having never been near M., or 'trane, after seeing them as idols,..... Allan is using the short scale on that SG to absolutely burn on (Mr Pasqua's) signature fusion tune (the head's in 3/4 and starts on the two, right?).... and Alan (P) demonstrates his undervalued-by-some but in-reality-the-epitome credentials yet again with a prototypical ep solo in which no extension is left untouched, #9. #11#1,6,2,5, b4, b17.... that rhodes sound is BETTER than his moodern and portable, but dry and sh_tty (at the end of the day) Nord, thru' overdriven 'twins muthafucka!, lets face it !!! Back to the seventies ! Spears and caves ! lets get together people and do this all again !!!!!! AMmmazing post and Antonio was here but I missed him, bummer, but the post remains gold !!
I believe that people used to play a Gibson SG knows that this guitar has a strange feature: a very short decay. For me it's very clear that Allan is "struggling" with the guitar. He's literally in the middle of the path of his "almost-violin-tone". And this guitar is not helping at all!
@@alfbarroso I think mine is 2008. It's got a very thick neck, which I enjoy. Still very wobbly, for better or for worst. It's also lighter than other SGs I've tried. I don't buy the "heavier=more sustain thing" either. I feel light instruments are often more resonant. Anyhow, I only owned the guitars I've owned.
@@user-oy7gz5bf2h yep, totally: this instrument seems to have a life of its own. You don’t play it: you tame it. Sometimes it can evoke a “strat-fourth-pickup-position” tone, some others it simply doesn’t happen. It’s a big mistery, indeed.

That Tony Williams Lifetime “Believe It” album changed my life.
The most perfect synergy. a band of real listeners. Allan is joyous.

utterly brutal solo from holdsworth

Tony Newton (Bass), Tony Williams (Drums) for this show. It's Tony Williams' Lifetime, 1975 before they recorded their first album.
Music so energetic it sounds like it's on the verge of exploding. The drum sound 😳
