How To Rivet Leather, Soften Leather, Dye Leather - Leather Movie Prop Repairs
Repairing some other leather props for Mr Dog Poop's Studio, maintenance man demonstrates how to use copper rivets, oil leather for softness and how to use leather dye.
We acquired a bunch of costumes and props and now we have to make repairs on some of the items. We took the opportunity to share what we know about garment rivets in this simple repair video.
We also go through the process of using neatsfoot oil to soften and preserve the leather.
One of the repairs requires that we add some color back, so the end of the video shows how simple it is to change the color of leather.

      Not every test makes the final video cut. We did other videos with the HF kit on our studio channel and we had it on a steel anvil on the floor and could not cut with it. We had to resort to cutting it with a razor blade and that is messy and not as strong as a properly cut hole. The point of the video was to show how to do it, not test every single possible tool to a point of exhaustion.

    I've been looking on ebay UK for the green press as you have got, and it appears. that there's a whole punch die with the machine. Did your green machine come with the die punch? And you just decided not to use it. I think I need to do more investigation before I invest in one of these machines.

      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 4 месяца назад

      Those presses are available in so many configurations and with various parts it is overwhelming. The press alone is about $30 so depending on what they package with it the price will go up. The one we purchased did not come with a hole punch. We opted for the 1500 grommets and just purchased the hole punches separately. I woudl assume if it comes with punches they would be pretty good and not like the cheap kit which is basically just disposable after using.

    So... this is partly true, but there are other reasons. If you're having significant trouble inserting the key, then yes, lubrication is the easiest thing to try first. However, a lot of time the reason you can't remove your key, especially on non-padlock cylinders, is because the retaining cap is loose, or it's that the two screws securing the actuating tailpiece to the back of the key cylinder are loose. The ability to insert the key, turn the cylinder core, and then remove the key requires a specific amount of in/out "play" to be there. If there is too much tension, it binds the moving parts and prevents correct function. If there is too little tension, then the core of the cylinder, the part that rotates, will be able to move in and out too much. This creates a situation akin to one of those finger trap toys that won't let you simply pull your fingers apart in order to get them out. In a lock, there are different length pins that correspond to the depth of the valleys in your key. When you insert the correct key in the lock, all of those pins sit in the bottom of those valleys and create a level surface that is the same height as the lock core, which is called the "shear line". That is why you can turn it, at that point. When the retaining cap/screws on the back of the core allow too much in/out movement, it allows the key to start lifting those pins above the shear line and into the main housing that holds the spring loaded "driver pins" and prevents the key from being removed since the harder you pull on the key, the more trapped those pins become. So, to remove your key you'll have to push the core into the lock cylinder with one hand and then use the other hand to pull the key out. This will simulate having the correct tension on the core, allowing the key to be removed. If this is what is happening, you'll either have to call a locksmith to repair it, or you can do it yourself if you feel confident in your mechanical abilities. If your lock has a spring loaded pin engaging a geared cap on the back of the core, you'll need to press that pin down and turn the cap until it's tight, then you loosen it 2 notches, allow the retaining pin to seat, and test the key. If it turns smoothly with no drag, and you can remove your key with no issues, you're set. If it sticks a bit when you try to pull out the key, tighten the cap 1 notch, and if it feels a bit tight when you turn the key, loosen it one notch. If you have screws holding a tailpiece in place, just tighten the screws and you're done. I'm a locksmith, and this is one of the more common issues i see. As for lubrication, stay away from WD-40 as it tends to get really sticky when it dries, which causes the lock to bind up. I really like tri-flow, super lube, or Houdini lock lubricant. Everyone used to use powdered graphite, but i don't like it because it's SUPER messy and has s tendency to clog up the lock, especially if you accidentally use too much.

    In my job we drill hundreds of holes a day and "walk it in". Start it more slowly and gently til you have enough of a hole to easily drill. Just takes a second vs grabbing a whole other tool .

    • @mrdogpoopcanfixit
      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 4 месяца назад

      If you are drilling hundreds of holes, center punching will speed up the process, if you do them all first and not putting down the drill each time to grab the punch. It would also be relevant to the hardness of the material and drill type. Softer materials like aluminum or plastic are much easier to bite. Also the hole size and hand drill versus machine drilling. A small drill will flex and bend and wander and a large drill will be harder to get started but will not flex. Drilling softer hot rolled steel versus harder 4130 chrome molly or stainless will have completely different results. Our practice has always been to center punch even when using a Bridgeport milling machine to drill. If you need precision and production speed it just makes sense in most cases. If you are drilling hundreds of holes over and over, using drill guides is even faster for precision placement. But that requires building fixtures for the job. If each job is unique then that is not an option.

    • @mrdogpoopcanfixit
      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 4 месяца назад

      We actually replaced the long hoses a few years ago and made those ourselves using reusable ends ( www.discounthydraulichose.com/shop?Search=reusable+end ). Those are the easiest to replace because they just loop around pulleys and are easily accessible without having to jack up the forks. to get to them. And again, no need to worry about position, the system will bleed itself. Just install the hose and the hydraulic pump will take care of the positioning. If you do need to jack the forks up, once the system is open, hoses off, you should be able to jack up the forks with any jack or even a winch or come-along. Just be ready for fluid to leak out as you do that, if necessary.

I used it to run GPS, radio etc. I don't like taking the 12v from the center tap because it is an uneven draw and at high amps, could impact battery charging. I have traveled up and down the eastern US for decades and never heard of Buc-ee's until someone told me about it. Their billboards say nothing about food or gas. I am not sure how so many people found them and I was surprised they are in Kentucky or any of the other states.

      So, the truth is, we bought 2 sandwiches, one to take apart for the video and one for the video guy to eat. That sandwich went in the trash. Nobody was killed in this video eating gas station hands. I love Monk, Mr Dog Poop is just as crazy, he buys Clorox wipes by the pallet.

    1st trip - "Wow. This is amazingly big and kinda stupid." 2nd trip - "I'm going to get those things I saw/heard about but missed the first time." 3rd trip - "This is just crowded and I'm wasting 30+ minutes for gas station food." I'll never go a 4th time. Race Trac and Love's are better.

      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 6 месяцев назад

      Yup! That about sums it up. We were impressed when we first saw it, then second trip, $13 for a 7-11 burger? Maybe a bit too much, plus gas was 5 cents cheaper across the street at LOVES gas Station. It is like Disney Land, one trip and you are good for a life time. Been there, done that.

    I dont think they suck at all. Who wants a bulb that has a 5% efficiency producing light and burns our after 700 hours? If you don't like your LED bulb, get a different one. There's an incredible variety.

    • @mrdogpoopcanfixit
      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 6 месяцев назад

      It is a joke really. Minimum wage was $5 in the early 80's and has only gone up 50% in 40 years while everything else has doubled in price every 10 years. You could buy a Big Mac Meal for around $1, I used to buy 2 at a time. Now they are priced as high as $18 at some locations. That means someone in Georgia would have to work 3 hours to buy one Big Mac Meal and after taxes, they would still be short a buck or two. But we did see Buc-ee's was paying $18/hr which is good news for Georgia.

    Very informative video about generator maintenance. Hopefully the old generator can be fixed. Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies carburetors and other parts for generators, and other outdoor power equipment. Maybe we could work together to share more tips on small engine repair to help the DIY repairers in the community.

    • @mrdogpoopcanfixit
      @mrdogpoopcanfixit 7 месяцев назад

      I would love that. This video was just a quick way of how to get it started out of the box. I had to do it, so why not share? Not much depth. My background is automotive engineering and general manufacturing, so doing more small engine and generator videos would be great. The hardest part for us is that we have to have things to show, buying parts and doing repairs can get expensive, so collaborating makes sense.
