    To sum it up it should work with any MTB 10 speed shifter and derailleur that are compatible with each other and cover the range of the cassette? I'm quite confused since Shimano does not include this information on their compatibility chart... I've Microshift advent x on my commuter and will try it out this winter.

      I do these measurements to help you make an informed decision about mixing and matching parts that aren't officially compatible. I'm not ready to say that this cassette could work with any 10-speed MTB groupset, but based on my measurements, I think there is potential for this to work. The community won't know for sure until someone tries it out, so I do these measurements to help people decide whether it's worth it to try. I look forward to seeing the result of your experiment!

  • @m.talley1660
    @m.talley1660 14 дней назад

    If that GX rear derailleur has a clutch the 39 tooth is probably the limit. Though they look alike the non-clutch and clutched versions have different limits. I've tested both versions with a 2X GX set up on my stock Surly Bridge Club (11-40). The clutched version hung up on the 40t yet the non-clutched version works (also beyond spec). So goat link going beyond these cassettes. BTW I wouldn't be surprised if Shimano left well enough alone regarding backwards compatibility. If shops found themselves buying Cues components trying to integrate them into shifting set ups only to find things don't work ( built-in obsolescence). It would add to the #thanksshimano exposure. I haven't looked but perhaps there's a compatibility chart. Much appreciation for your work👍.

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 14 дней назад

      Thank you for sharing your real-world experience! I think Shimano has made it clear that CUES is replacing lots of down-market groupsets and making it so shops don't need to carry so many SKUs. The compatibility charts say that CUES is only compatible with itself, but it's clear that there is a lot of unofficial cross-compatibility.

    Could you 3D-Print a plastic cover to make a 12 speed Shimano cues shifter?

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 18 дней назад

      Interesting idea! The trick is actually installing the new plastic piece. Shimano parts are not known to be easy to disassemble without destroying them. You might be better off simply cutting the stop. Besides, I'm not sure a 12-speed CUES shifter would be very useful. The 11-speed cassette is already very wide, so I'm not sure there is space for a 12th cog.

    • @levrider9558
      @levrider9558 14 дней назад

      @@boothsbikeprojects Right, in this thought experiment, we'd have to shoehorn another cog between the biggest cog and the spokes. 12 speed cassettes would be of limits, as their spacing is narrower. Maybe someone somewhere at some time made a derailleur with a fitting pull ratio, but now we are already in finicking territory, where we could just use friction shifters if we want it to be difficult. But I still think it's interesting that we could, in theory, have 17 positions, and it's only a plastic cover who hinders us from using them.

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 26 дней назад

      I really should do a video on this since a visual explanation would be helpful. Basically, I know where the jockey wheel is in relation to the mounting point/dropout. I assume the dropout is about 8mm wide, and that the smallest cog is inset about 3 mm more. To find the second smallest cog, I just add the cog pitch (ex 4.05mm for LinkGlide). For the second largest cog, I just keep adding the cog pitch for each gap in between.

    @rickeverett3304 Месяц назад

    May I suggest place a short explanation description in areas like deraileur pull ratios that explains what that means to those that don’t understand Example: Deraileur pull ratio is the amount the deraileur moves relevant to the amount of cable pulled by the shifter. Couple this with your desired shifter to see if you get the right amount of shifting width to accomodate your cassette spacing. It may be ok to have a shifter exceed the number of cogs on your cassette but make sure you adjust the limit screws to prevent mover shifting into the dropout or the spokes. It is recomended you test the combination thoroughly befor committing ,to any setup.

    SRAM introduced these rd designs with their 1X systems. To me they seemed counter-intuitive. My first thought was why would any manufacturer drop the slant from the parallelogram (pun intended)?. The early marketing graphics that show how the it works are really too simple in explanation. It's now 10 years since introduced. Does an observation of built-in yaw mean that the parallelogram is uneven - so slightly trapezoidal? There's a lot going with these mechanisms. Great work - interesting and engaging stuff to follow.

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 3 месяца назад

      I assume that the parallelogram is indeed more like a trapezoid. I don't see any other way to produce the yaw. That being said, I've noticed this yaw on a lot of slant-parallelogram derailleurs as well.

    it's noteworthy that 2.50 cable pull should be the same as shimano 9 shifters (road-mtb, good old times when they were the same).

    So, theoretically, if I wanna use this derailleur on a 12 speed cassete, the Sram SX 12 speed shifter would work fine, right?

    Still greatly appreciate your work here. I'm curious - in the spirit of reverse engineering, would mapping derailleur pivots and body dimensions (diagram of parallelogram) provide any worthwhile info to the database you are building?

      It would be incredible for someone to try and precisely measure the parallelogram. I could then benchmark my empirical measurements against a more analytical method. I didn't go that route because it requires more precision than I have access to. It wouldn't be so hard for 1x derailleurs since the parallelogram only moves horizontally. You'll also need to figure the position of the cable stop with a good amount of accuracy. The cable stop can't be at a right angle to the lever arm throughout the range of motion, which causes the effective pull ratio to be lower than simply measuring the parallelogram and the lever arm. 2x derailleurs are trickier. They require that you measure the "slant" angle in the slant-parallelogram design. I remember trying to do some measurements on a GX derailleur and found that small amounts of error in that angle can greatly change the resulting pull ratio calculation. Additionally, derailleurs end up having all kinds of quirks. For example, SRAM derailleurs have that "shark fin" on the lever arm, which would require modeling itself.

      @@boothsbikeprojects Thanks for answering. As I thought you could and have added to my understanding of why it would be difficult. It would be interesting to do a kind of historical thread of derailleur designs. Even as this thought emerged, I realize that would be daunting. It was 60 years ago when the slant parallelogram was introduced. The fact that even the cable stop location introduces changes are beyond what I'd thought of. That and the slant's effect might explain Suntour's indexing failures 35 years ago. The SRAM "shark fin" that ramps-up cable pull is something Ratio Technology Co seems to grasp as well as the mechanism that indexes inside the shifter. I've always guessed that their being based in Germany (where the SRAM engineers are) might have given them some insider info. Again, all these dynamics beyond what I'd thought of - I appreciate your work as is.

    As an engineer I really like your videos. If you find a combination of hydraulic brifters and clutch rear derailleur able to run 10 or 11s LG cassettes would be very nice. People that are using them for MTB are claiming how good they shift under load, so it would probably be good for gravel too. By the way, just for future records, may you want to differ the HG cassete to the new LG ones cause they probably will become common in entry level bikes very soon.

    Hello, I'm looking for a cheap set. I was thinking about the new linkglide CUES CS-LG300-9 11-41T cassette. With cheap Acera RD-M3020 derailleur + old Alivio SL-M3100 shifter. My question is: Will this shifter work with the new CUES cassette? How do I check this? r3020 derailleur has interesting specifications.

      It will not work. Cues is only compatible with cues parts

    Is there a table of derailleurs and shifters, their pull ratios and compatibility?

      I've been compiling a spreadsheet of derailleur pull ratios and shifter cable pulls here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uxu7OSKLG3JzhmOIg-iWHz-p8MW0ou0HCLRWk4BoO04/edit?usp=sharing Compatibility is a bit more tricky. My measurements can help you figure out what /might/ work, but the only way to figure out what does work is to try it out. That being said, Russ at @PathLessPedaledTV is doing a great job of experimenting with different shifters and derailleurs to discover what is compatible.

    Yep, works perfect with all 11 and 12 (Shimano)

      With 11 road yes because it is a 11 speed road derailleur. On 12 speed road not so good because 11 and 12 speed road is not exact the same😊

    Do you have any thoughts on why the cable pull ratio you measured wasn't the same as the GRX 10-speed RX400 you measured? Both of these RD's are exchangeable with GRX 11 & 10 speed shifters, Dura-Ace & Ultegra & 105 11sp shifters, and Tiagra 4700 10sp shifters. How much cable-pull ratio difference matters?

    • @boothsbikeprojects
      @boothsbikeprojects 4 месяца назад

      The Ultegra RD-RX800 derailleur appears to be a bit of an outlier, having a higher pull ratio than I would expect. I haven't published the video yet, but the 105 RD-5800 has the same pull ratio as the GRX RX400. Both the RD-RX800 and the RD-5800 are officially compatible with the same ST-R8020 shifter, but have significantly different pull ratios. I'm still trying to understand why Shimano designed this derailleur this way. My main theories are: - Improved chain control by really pressing the chain against the side of the cog - New ideas at Shimano on how to improve shifting My earlier video "The Problem with Traditional Compatibility" talks about how much pull ratio matters, but manufacturers will generally design the drivetrain so that the result of multiplying the cable pull and the pull ratio is anywhere from 5% lower than the cog pitch to 2% higher than the cog pitch, with about 2% lower than the cog pitch being the average.
