Tuna is a very loveable 5 year old Tabby cat who had a severe accident to his left front leg. The leg unfortunately could not be salvaged and had to be amputated. Thank you SOso much for this video. So much. My cat who is my everything might have to have his entire left arm removed as we'll just like Tuna. Literally crying seeing how happy he was. I also told my doctor to do whatever we need to do, even if it means losing his arm so long as I could have him for years and years to come. Thank you Doctors for all that you do

      We are 3 days post op. She was rescued with hind leg trapped in a picket fence. A few small puncture wounds were also found. My guess, desperately trying to out run a dog or large cat ☹️ Our vet said it's sadly common with picket fencing. Hope your cat is doing well. I'm amazed at our progress in 3 days 😊

    Greetings! Great video! Question, I understand that removal of the ovaries is a sterilizing procedure... but why not just perform a laparoscopic hysterectomy and leave the ovaries behind? Would love your response as my dog is soon to be spayed! Thank you!!

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 5 лет назад

      Thanks for your interest in our video. There would be very little (if any) data for dogs getting a hysterectomy alone since it is rarely performed. It could be done via laparoscopy but would require a larger incision to remove the uterus since it is quite a bit bigger than the ovaries. I believe hysterectomies are performed in women with endometriosis or other uterine diseases, but this rarely occurs in dogs. However, those small ovaries are what drives many of the hormonal influences in the body including a roughly 30% chance of getting mammary cancer in adult unspayed female dogs. This risk reduces to <0.05% if the ovaries are removed prior to their first heat. An ovariectomy is ideal since it prevents any heat, pyometra, pregnancy and virtually eliminates mammary cancer when performed prior to the first heat and is far less invasive than removing the ovaries AND uterus as in a traditional spay. I hope that at least partially answers your question...

    My 10 year old cat got diagnosed with an osteosarcoma tumor in his front right paw and they'll be amputating his leg next week. Love my pal too much to euthanize him or let him keep suffering with the cancer so amputation is the only option and this video gives me hope that he'll still be a happy, able cat with a long life ahead of him following the surgery! I was told he'll need to slim down so he can balance better with 3 legs so he won't be happy about going on a diet though

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 5 лет назад

      Cats are amazing creatures and adapt very well to an amputation. You are making the right decision and you will likely notice a dramatic improvement with your cat's quality of life despite being 3-legged since the pain from the osteosarcoma will be gone..... Good luck!

    My pup is having a traditional spay surgery tomorrow and this is very interesting. However, I worry about pyometra with leaving the uterus as even stump pyometra can occur although rare, after a dog is spayed and has the ovaries and uterus removed. The stump left behind still has the possibility to get infected. I would assume even moreso of a chance for a full uterus left behind? Correct me if I'm wrong. But great work! I think it's awesome that this method causes less pain and an easier recovery and a smaller incision. My vet is very skilled and can do a traditional spay with a very tiny incision however as many can so a traditional spay doesn't always have that much bigger of an incision but it absolutely can depending on the surgeon and anatomy of the individual dog. Great educational video! Thanks!

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 5 лет назад

      Thanks for your interest in our video Claire! The chance of a dog getting a pyometra (infection of the uterus) or a stump pyometra is almost zero once the ovaries are removed with either a traditional spay or laparoscopic spay, especially if they are spayed before their first heat. The hormones in the ovaries are responsible for stimulating the lining of the uterus, and once the ovaries are removed, the remaining uterus shrinks and remains quiet. This is the reason why ovary removal is one of the common treatment options for women experiencing endometriosis. Ovariectomy (ovary removal) without a hysterectomy (uterus removal) is the most common way to spay dogs in Europe for decades and is the reason why we know so much about what happens to the uterus once the ovaries are removed. Uterine cancer is still possible for both procedures, however it is very rare in dogs and cats.

      @@morgananimalhospital4430 Okay, how do you prevent spay incontinence? I'm seeing that leaving the ovaries to preserve hormone function, while removing the uterus for sterilization, as is done with the partial spay (as it's known), should prevent spay incontinence???

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 4 года назад

      @@Starry_Night_Sky7455 Thanks for your inquiry Bonnie. There is no way to actually prevent spay urinary incontinence. In a 2013 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, they found that 5% of dogs developed urinary incontinence after a traditional spay. A laparoscopic spay will likely have very similar numbers because the ovary in removed in both surgeries and the ovaries produce the bulk amount of the estrogen in female dogs. However, when urinary incontinence does happen in these 5% of dogs, it is an easy issue to treat with close to 100% efficacy.

    I live in Alaska. The compassionless compensation motivated barbarians here couldn't spell laparoscopy. Where are you located? Any chance you would do a laparoscopic bilateral partial salpingectomy, just like the millions of procedures done on human females?

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 7 лет назад

      Hi Woodrow, Unfortunately we are a little east of you way over in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It may be a little too far for you with this procedure. We do not typically perform a salpingectomy procedure in dogs. The benefits of that procedure is that the dog would not get pregnant, but they would still go into heat which most owners do not want to deal with. The dog would also still be at risk for a pyometra which is common in dogs. Thanks for the question!

  • @drummerinthepark9641
    @drummerinthepark9641 7 лет назад

    What about pyometra?

    • @morgananimalhospital4430
      @morgananimalhospital4430 7 лет назад

      Excellent question! Research has shown that there is no increase risk of developing a pyometra when only the ovaries are removed (i.e. ovariectomy). In Europe, a traditional ovariectomy has been the standard method of spaying for decades without any increased incidence of pyometra. In the past, North America veterinarians have performed a ovariohysterectomy (removal of ovaries and uterus) as the method of spaying, but research has revealed that removal of the uterus is unnecessary since the ovaries are what initiates a pyometra.

    I got a cat in 2008 and in 2010 she got cancer in her foot and it was spreading up her leg. We took her to the vet and they said we could either get in amputated or she would be put to sleep. The 2nd one was not even an option! She came home after the procedure and it took a little bit to get used to it and now she is perfectly good! She can do everything she did before it happened!
