First Braille Machine, Second Edition: The Hall Braille Writer, Lovely Example, Updated Features
Просмотров 2672 года назад
The joyful example of the first mechanical braille writer made its way to Charlie’s Desk from Ontario Canada. It seems to be a later generation than the previous example, as the construction seems to have improved to compensate for some of the failure points in the design. Gone is the giant lengthy spring for tension, a more conventional typewriter component was used. The escapement mechanism i...
Low Vision Division: Laundry Tips - Easy to Measure Detergents - Chores

Measuring detergent is always a pain. It can be even more annoying if the product is not accessible. There are several options for laundry detergent that are more convenient to use if you are doing your laundry non-visually. Probably the most familiar option to people will be something like Tide pods. But I find those to be a little gross, and they still contain liquid, so they are pretty heavy...

The Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind, August 1930 Issue: Agnostic Oasis in the War of the Dots

The Matilda Zeigler Magazine endowed by Electa Matilda Ziegler was deeply influential in the development of print technology for blind and visually impaired consumers. In the 1930s through the early 1960s, the magazine was printed in three different methods of tactile reading, the familiar braille, New York Point, and Moon Type. I am also wondering if the size of the printed space on the page o...

Thank you for sharing. It's hard to find such video
So nice of you to say!
That's where you're wrong, sir. the Moon alphabet actually has its own set of punctuation that mainly consists of dots.
Awesome! Love to hear it!
Your videos are always a treat! I'm doing some research on the history of braille, where could I contact you?
sure why not
@@CharliesDesk I came upon an old braille book that has what looks like cut pages in the middle, but when you read it there is no missing content. So I was wondering if this was some old method of preserving braille? ie: Cut some pages in between so that the two braille pages dont touch each other and the dots are preserved? Did you happen upon this method in any old braille magazines/books?
This video solved my many years question how this works! Thanks!
Glad it helped!
It applies a voltage, not a current.
Ah, yes, that’s correct! Thank you
wherr can i acquire/buy the cell module?
No clue! Ebay?
I own a Perkins Brailler, and I repair and donate them. I believe that these machines are an important tool for anyone that may benefit from it's use. everyone should have access to the tools they need to be successful in life.
Agreed! They are incredibly important. Monopolies limit the access of people to braillers, and that’s what has occurred with perkins. They can do better, and hopefully they will.
A great demonstration of using a long white cane. I got jabbed and the handle hit a healing wound. Then, a couple of days later, I fell drown (launched) three stairs. I landed on my elbows and knees. I had an O and M lesson a couple of days later and had a lot of confidence. Then, I went back to work and have not trusted the cane. I think that I use my sight too much and do not concentrate. I stopped practicing this summer. , As it has been over 100 degrees.
Commit to the cane. Keep your head up. Use your vision for orientation. You’re vision is no longer able to help you avoid obstacles and keep you safe. Thats scary, but is ok. It is much safer for your physical self to embrace the cane. Good work!!
Ecxellent video. Where did you buy your pins? Thank you in advance.
I scour ebay!
@@CharliesDesk Thank you, i love your videos and wish that I younger and had the money to go into O and M. I was obsessed with the long, white cane after my first lesson. Originally, I was not going to have O and M training. My sister and my specialist suggested that I might not need the white cane now, but I’ll need it in the future.
If you need it in the future have fun learning about it now. O&M graduate programs are often fully funded by grants from the government. Either from the rehabilitation dept or the education department. Just look up your nearest program if you’re interested
Thank you for being honest. Braille is difficult. I’m trying to learn at an older age in case my eyesight gets worse.. I might try jumbo braille to label items.
Like your channel. Please do a video on the new Ambutech Pathfinder 360° 2-Inch rolling ball. It rolls in any direction.
As a white cane user with low vision the lack of audio on this video makes it inaccessible. A white cane is a tool for independence however the lack of audio on this video means I'm dependant on someone with sight to replace my elastic- very disappointing.
Thanks for your feedback. This is an unpaid passion project. Receiving comments such as this is why I have taken a break from making videos. The energy you bring to the internet connects with real people on the other side of the screen.
I would love to get a complete system dump of your SD card.
lol thanks!
How'd you come across this unit and what required its disassembly? I've got one with adb enabled and accessibility services disabled and am trying to perform a factory data reset.
just goofing around
Hello, can i ask more about how this braille typewriter works? I was wondering if i pressed 3 keys. Does the writer already print the dots or it was waiting for the keys to be released? If the answer is the second option, then i was wondering again if i released one of the 3 keys that i already pressed. Then the expected output is 2 or 3 dots??
When you press any of the six dot keys, they create a dot. It is very direct.
@@CharliesDeskThankyou for the reply
thanks for a heritage video.. useful
So nice of you!
How much is the moon writer worth
depends how many exist, depends who’s interested, its not really about that. They aren’t particularly collectible as of yet. Really its more about the history
I heard that this was the original version of braille
Not really. Different concepts but both tactile writing methods. There were other attempts prior to both.
I have a white trecking pole with a red tip. it is for ID and stability and I love it.
why is my brailler making ghost dots
Needs servicing. Lubricant has dried up, and there is dust in the embossing assembly
Thank you for sharing
Hi Charlie! I just wanted to thank you for this sharing your knowledge! I'm visually impaired , recently with Stargardt disease and was looking to get some different monoculars than the 8x16 I got from my local clinic, and was struggling to find an affordable brand I felt I could trust. Seeing the ones you linked though, I see that they look identical to my Mattingly monocular just without the name, and at literally a tenth of what I was charged! Emboldened by the safety of Amazon's return policy, I'm looking forward to trying these and comparing! Basically just wanted to say thanks for providing a information and a link to what brand you guys actually recommend for people to get for themselves! It helps a lot, especially with how little information on these devices is out there in general for low vision individuals, let alone information aimed them instead of aimed at physicians / instructors. Anyway, hope you do well in things! Subscribed and checked out some videos like the one on the Moon Writer. Super neat and informative videos you have here!Thank you very much again for this video and it's description!
I learned about this from omniglot, but it's really hard to find information about it, even videos on it. I wish it never have gone obsolete because it's so beautiful 😍
Cool! What’s omniglot? Thanks for watching!

Thank you for watching! I hope you can find something near you. There is not much of a big market for braille writer repair unfortunately. Maybe you can learn more blindness education and rehabilitation skills and add them to your braille and braille production skills.
I literally just came across your video while I was searching for reviews on the 32 cell from Maxi aids… I knew I wasn’t going crazy when thought that I I saw one of these little critters!! Lol! Great video!
They’re so cool, huh? Ya I feel like there’s a market for something nifty like this today.
Where did you get your ID cane? I can’t find any short lightweight ones
Ambutech website
Interesting. I've seen people learn moon if they don't have enough touch sensativity to learn braille, but I've never seen anyone actually write in moon.
Wow, where did that happen? The RNIB store just stopped selling all Moon materials a couple years back. They only had labels at that point anyway
@@CharliesDesk The last people I knew who learned to read moon were at my primary school in the mid to late 90s.
How interesting! Jumbo braille is what the data supports for tactile sensitivity. I don’t was never intended to be taught to children, at least not in the 20th century.
Congrats Charlie on your latest addition to your channel! It was a most riveting tale! Soon you will have a rather big channel! See you soon!
These devices are made by METEC. They are piezoelectric devices operated by a DC voltage of 200 volts. They are not current operated.
Thanks John I gotta make a new video! I just finished moving so I should be back at it and can provide more accurate information. I was just having fun taking it apart.
@Charlie's Desk Hey, please make a new video with the links of all components that you will use ...
It's a memory metal. Run a current through the "tweezers" and the metal on once side contracts, causing the tweezer to bend and push up the dot. Remove the current and it straightens out and lowers the dot.
Thanks Jim!! Gotta make a new video now
@@CharliesDesk For even more fun, connect a power supply across one of the tweezers. Set the voltage low to start and just enable output for a moment to see if it moves. Up it by 1 volt each attempt until it pops up. That would really enhance your video!
@@salbahejim this is a wonderful idea and I recently started working with a student who can help me bring this content more effectively! I really appreciate the comments and information!! Have a great day!
Hi! just wondering have you made it work? I mean do you have a video where you apply current ?
Nope not yet
Is there a particular corner we should be marking? Is punching the top right of the bill the standard?
Honestly I wouldn’t use this device. I would use a reader, and fold my bills using the system, and then put them in my wallet that way. I actually think this is a pretty bad product. Whatever works for ya
This was so interesting. 🦯
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I hope you subscribe. I am about to come out with some new stories!!!
Ha, been calling my mobility care and id can for years. Didnt know there was a difference
Well, the mobility cane does both, so both you and yourself are right. Haha
Hi Charlie! Thanks for this. I just happened to acquire one of these by chance...had no idea it was rare. It seems to be in much better condition than yours (apologies)...though it came to me atrociously packed and the paper support arms have broken off. I was wondering: do you know how to disassemble this machine enough to clean it? I checked your vids but if you have anything I wasn't able to locate it. I've found such a video for the Perkins, but am afraid to just try to follow that willy-nilly in case something about this machine is set up differently.
Hi April, congratulations on owning a wonderful little piece of history. While they are not impossible to obtain, they aren’t always available and the conditions vary considerably. It is certainly possible to do more damage to than good when pursuing amateur restoration work. There is no video record, or instructions that I am aware of that are readily accessible on the internet. I imagine they exist some where in an archive. If you’re interested in proceeding with tuning it up, your best bet is to work with a professional restorer of type writers from that era, or begin to learn for yourself some of the principles of type writer restoration. Just make sure you are ok with altering your machine before you start. Sometimes while they are designed to be taken apart, and to be fixed, bolts and screws are a bit frozen. Good luck! Thanks for watching, and have fun!
Thank you so much for the information! I recently found an almost identical piece of card with a Bible verse Sandwiched between the pages of an 1890s Bible. Rather fittingly it was Isaiah 42:16
Oh, please share a picture! There aren’t so many examples available of Philadelphia Line. Religious text is the most widely available, which is cool, but its fun to see quotidian daily life stuff like lists, and adds, a personal notes.
Very informative video. Thanks for the background of the Cane. I really enjoy the identification came . Are use mine as well, and crossing the street or connecting with buses.. Don’t necessarily need one for mobility just to let others now that I am visually impaired.
Totally! Glad you found it help. From my perspective, using a cane for ID is using a cane for mobility because it makes travel through the community easier. Just food for thought.
I lost some vision about a year ago and have resisted the cane because I can see, I just can't see everything. I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that using a cane is a good way to let others know I am visually impaired. Life can be easier when other people know to look out for you.
Sadly RNIB haven't sold or made braille pocket watches for decades now, but I'm glad you were able to get hold of an old one.
They’re really fantastic, aren’t they?
ᴘʀᴏᴍᴏsᴍ 😓
I dunno what this means
thanks !
Really impressive... Thanks for sharing it!
How do I mark my $100's
Hundred’s are marked tactilely in the US.
The C is for $100s
I recently learned about black cutting boards. It was super helpful seeing it in action- the high contrast makes such a big difference!
You could try opening a Dot watch , they most likely do not use piezo , I’m curious to know how the Braille cells work in that watch .
I think I’d wear one if I got my hands on one tbh, but yes, it would be v cool to see whats inside. Sent me a broken one, eh?
Where do buy the red, reflective cane? Thank you.
You can purchase red retroreflective tape on Amazon and apply to an existing cane, or you could special order an all red cane from Ambutech which has a few custom colors. Whatever you do choose, make sure it is retro reflective
@@CharliesDesk Thank you. I'll get the tape. I have a white one, but it does not have the red tape on the bottom like one for someone who is vision impaired.
I just took one year of German, and the translation seems pretty spot on, but the one word seems to be Punktschrift. The capital P and lowercase R are weird in this typeface, as see in Oskar Picht. The word now translates to braille, but is made up of "punkt", meaning point, with some connotations of poking, and "schrift", meaning writing. So more literally, point/poke writing, which is pretty apt.
Oh wow that makes so much sense! Thanks!
Really enjoy your videos! Will you ever open up an Orbit Reader 20 as these don’t use piezoelectric cells? I would be curious to know how they work, maybe some kind of solenoid with a locking mechanism.
Thanks for watching! I am glad you are enjoying the videos, that is great to hear. When I can get my hands on an Orbit Reader that is broken, I’ll make a video
