    Good day, I have been researching the victron Cyrix to partner my Victron 12 12 30 dcdc charger. My reasoning is that I'm using it on my winch truck and need good charge kept up but also need power of both batteries to power the winch. Are any of the cyrix dual pass through to allow both batteries to be used for powering the winch for more than a few seconds. Thanks hope you can help

    Great video Martin. I'm usually not one to pipe up, however, this video reminded me of situation at work many years ago. I'm an Ind Eng by education, but life took a turn after Uni and I ended up managing surveillance teams here in the West Midlands for many years. Lots of battery work required, including making up series and parallel systems to secrete in varied and unusual locations to power surveillance equipment, that (back in the day), might require it to be left for days and weeks without return to it. So a good knowledge and understanding of all elements of DC was essential. I had one member of staff who I trusted along with myself, ex car mechanic, , to do this. However I sent all my staff on an electrical safety course to understand the basics and particularly the safety implications. I had long advocated within the WMP snr management, that the charging systems used were inadequate and dangerous, using inadequate basic store bought chargers to charge and maintain resources! Having spent over £1k on a multi charger system, where others were spending £60 on poor quality systems with NO safety features. Roll on 6 months, and surveillance officers from Coventry were rushing out to set up a job , and whist setting up a trap car with batteries just taken off one of these chargers, it exploded in her face, and she was left blind in one eye and her face scarred for life! They even tried to blame her by saying she had connected the terminals incorrectly, which caused the spark that set off the explosion! I had spent the previous 12 months highlighting the dangers of taking batteries off chargers and immediately using them to set up systems, whilst the batteries were still effervessing hydrogen! Suffice to say, AFTER this incident, I created merry hell, pointing to the reckless incompetence exhibited by senior managers! Zero training, and reckless abdication of ensuring safe systems at work! Even after I had pointed out this very issue 12 months before! An officer lost the sight in her eye! Well done to you for highlighting this issue. These batteries were building up hydrogen gas in the battery cases, through the electrolysis! That hissing was pure hydrogen escaping! Thank goodness you don't smoke! Great video, and as a boat owner myself, delighted to see you going through the heating systems! I have an old webasto system, you have brought very clear focus on! I'll be going through your back catalogue of videos to upskill myself! Every day a school day!

    Amazing video! Hope the project is still doing along? I had a question also, you’ve bonded the inverter to the hull in the event of a DC short to the case, do you also need to have a DC Neutral from your battery bank drilled into the chassis on a separate stud so you’ve linked your AC and DC bonding systems together? Only ask as I’m in the middle of something similar at moment on my barge. Thanks, Joe.

    • @narrowboatelectrician
      @narrowboatelectrician Месяц назад

      Hi Joe. I take the AC earth and DC bond to separate points on the hull. Just so they are identified as two different protective conductors. But in essence they are both connected together.

    Great video, I was wondering why you included a battery to battery unit? The Fogstar lithium battery has a BMS built in to it that acts in the same way as including the B to B system. I’ve had mine a while as an auxiliary battery charging direct from the alternator no problem. 👍🏻

    • @narrowboatelectrician
      @narrowboatelectrician Месяц назад

      Hi, Fogstar recommend a buffer battery and B2B, even if they say different on their web site. I have had a few conversations with them on this. Without the buffer battery, the alternator is very much at risk. A BMS is not a B2B

    My webasto 5.5kw hot water system went kaput in my window cleaning van just after 18 months of use from brand new. Its pretty difficult to diagnose without being there in person. Unusual to see a lot of smoke coming from exhaust unless there is lots of unburnt fuel in there. Which can happen if the glow plug failed so combustion never occurs. You'll really diagnostics plugged in to see whats going on.

    I'd be tempted to wire a 12v outlet with maybe even 5v usb somewhere to that buffer battery. Then if the system does ever lock up (BMS) and they have trouble resetting it at least they would have a full battery of 12v and usb 5v to charge stuff up with. It would then be a buffer backup battery.

    I had a works van that had 5 victron 220Ah batteries. I took 2 out after finding out how far overweight it was. It was still just over with a full fuel tank. 3 years ago the remaining ones got changed for some lifepo4. Wow what a difference. That was 280kg out and 44kg of lifepo4 in. Swapping 4 x 6v trojans out of the boat and fitting a lifepo4 i now have 3 inches less draught. Great for shallow canals.

    • @narrowboatelectrician
      @narrowboatelectrician 3 месяца назад

      LifeP04 are perfect for a van or motor home, weight means less in a narrowboat but if you gained 4” on your draft that’s definitely a win. More and more, I am installing lithium as energy demands increase in the boating world. Think my van was over with the 260Ah batteries in as I had other batteries in for other jobs.

      Yes, I am doing more lithium these days. But now the price of the battery is about half of the total swap out. I wont connect lithium without right fusing and B2B chargers. Weight in a narrowboat is not really an issue as it is in a motorhome, so AGM or Lead Carbon is still the cheaper option.

    I have spent nearly 40 years working in the fire and security sector. Working in some of the largest buildings in London. I spent 10 years of that working as a technician, specialising in fire in the marine sector, working on anything from a super yacht to an aircraft carrier. I have also worked on some of the largest oil platforms around the world. I am now recently semi retired and was looking at getting into the marine fire alarms. Being self employed. Do you have any suggestions as to how I would get started? Btw I have just recently purchased a houseboat, and I am horrified by the state of the electrics onboard. But this is not a bad thing as I was intending to re wire the boat, making everything, including starting the engine voice controlled. Obviously with manual overrides built in!

    • @narrowboatelectrician
      @narrowboatelectrician 3 месяца назад

      Hi Tony. Interesting! Fire detection on boats is mainly the domestic detectors and C0 alarms. Obviously there is requirements for extinguishers and fire blankets, size and locations should be to BSS. Commercial boats must have more sophisticated systems. I would contact British Marine on this, that will be a good starting point.

    • @tonyw.6813
      @tonyw.6813 3 месяца назад

      @@narrowboatelectrician Hi, thank you for your reply. I will contact them. Also, I will mention that during the lockdown, I trained as an Electric Vehicle technician, up to Level 4. Here I gained a lot of knowledge regarding electric motors, inverters and batteries. Especially on Lithium Ion batteries. I don’t know if you use these much. Me personally I would not have these batteries anywhere near my boat, and in my opinion these should be banned. I a car I would liken them to be like driving around with a bucket of petrol, and a lit candle above it. But I am sure that a lot of boat owners will swear by them, not knowing the dangers of how they can combust without any signs of doing so. If a lithium ion battery fire starts, there is no way you would be able to extinguish it with a fire extinguisher, or even ten fire extinguishers. This phenomenon is known as a “Thermal Runway”. There seems to be a media blackout on this type of fire. Suggest researching a ship called the “Felicty Ace”. If you do have to install these batteries I would suggest that you fit the batteries on a steel plate, with a fire blanket next to it. If a fire starts from here, the boat is lost. All you can do is try and give yourself extra time to abandon the boat.

    What an interesting and informative video. I have recently purchased my first boat, with bow thruster issue. Which I have yet to attempt a repair on. I got a very interesting insight into how a bow thruster is wired. My background is that I am a qualified electrician on land, (although I might add it was a long time ago)! Also the mere fact that you are using a Fluke digital test meter, tells me that you know what you’re talking about! Thank you for producing this video, which I found by searching for bow thruster issues. I have subscribed to your channel and will work my through your past videos.

      Hi Tony, welcome aboard! Bow thrusters are pretty straight forward but overuse keeps me busy with them. Replaced a controller panel yesterday on a Vetus unit. I always trust Fluke, this one is auto ranging and works well. I’ve seen some meters that have quite an error on DC, and when faultfinding on charging can send you right off the rail.

The advice kit didn’t have the fuel filter in it for some reason, don’t know if someone had robbed it. I did remove for inspection and it was clear. (Filming on the job can miss bits n pieces) the burner gauge is correctly installed but you do have to get the assembly out as the green o ring needs replacing. The heater was in good condition seeing as it has never been serviced (even though owner thought it had been) impressive really.

    A question for you. BSS require a 2P RCD. I’ve tried ringing them to clarify, but can you have an isolator switch and a board full of AFDD RCBO 1P+N breakers instead of one Double Pole RCD and MCB’s? I realise this isn’t quite the same as a 1P+N breaker in the event of a fault on the line conducted will trip both poles like a double pole breaker would but unlike a double pole breaker in the event of a neutral fault a 1P+N breaker wouldn’t trip as far as I understand. A double pole RCD monitors both the line and neutral individually and when a fault occurs on either it trips both poles. Is it this functionality (the monitoring on both line and Neutral) that is required in a marine installation or would a 1P+N AFDD RCBO breaker still fit the bill with all the added protection. Thanks.

    • @narrowboatelectrician
      @narrowboatelectrician 4 месяца назад

      Hi, all RCD’s are two pole which break both pole when there in an imbalance in the force!!! Ie current out = current returning. Well >20mA difference. BSS check nothing more as to breakers in the fuse box.

    Hi watched a couple of your videos & feel I can trust your opinion. I have been on my boat for 3 years with no problems at all. I've recently had batteries changed. My boat always started first time so I only needed 6 new leisures. At first I was told I had 5 leisure & 2 starters which I disputed so I was then told that 1 of the leisures is actually the starter. After the work was done I believe they swapped my actual starter for a new leisure & left me now with 6 new leisures &1 old no good leisure. When I complained they just quoted me for a new starter. Could you tell me please if a leisure battery used as a starter would work perfectly for over 3 years? Since this work has been done my engine won't even crank & my solar isn't working properly. I am single female that just doesn't won't to get ripped off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

      Sorry for the delay, I’ve been away. All seems very odd. It would be quite unusual to have two starter batteries unless it’s a 24v system. People do have some odd ideas though. A leisure battery will start an engine, and in some cases, all the batteries are the same “dual purpose” design. These are often installed by boat builders that just buy pallets of one battery. Having said that a starter battery and a leisure battery are designed for different purposes. The starter to give very high currents for short periods of time, and a leisure to give lower currents for long periods of time. It’s impossible for me to know what was and what is now, so I can’t really advise on that. I hope you have it sorted now? There are some really good guys and a whole load of cowboys on the canals.

    Thanks for posting this video - there were a ton of details here that helped me. I’m in the process of figuring out why my new-to-me unit won’t fire but this helped massively with what good looks like. Thanks!

      Don’t think any of those faults were anything to do with boat builder to be honest.

    What a fantastic guy you are. I’m an alarm engineer also have addition 18 I’m doing quite a bit on my narrowboat, which I have had a year. Just doing Victron solar, the raspberry pi way. O you have made me fuse and earth mad. The amount of circuits on this 18 year old boat without fuses from battery. Or inverter and the small solar panel on now, would make you smirk. I love messing with the electrics. I would love more education videos you suggested. One day may have the pleasure of shaking your hand. Thanks mate. Chris from Liverpool

      Hey Chris, what a lovely comment for me to receive! Unfused circuits seem to be the norm on most boats I see.....its only 12v??? I'm on vacation at the moment (Fran and Marts Travels) Be back at it when I restart in March. I'll catch you then Chris, glad you like the channel.

    Sorry but 40% more out put on the tilties is not something negligible. For continuous cruisers its great! I had many clients who actually do tilt them. It made a great difference for them especially in winter. Also mount a small piece of wood onto the metal box rim and mount the fuses? Im so happy ive watched this video! Looking back ive seen soooo many victron 3kva inveters with 70 or 95mm2 cable 😅 and never understood why there's a double bolt on the inveter side until ive red their manual. This video reassured me that im right in sticking to my cablepermanual views. Dont install these often. Most of my clientele can't afford a 3 grand inveter. But that's typical for the East london area. Yea, i collect victron manuals these days. Cheers 🎉🎉🎉

      I get the winter tilting argument. Its a conversation I have with my customers where most decide on the flat mounting. I do this the tilting brackets look awful to be honest, but if power output is #1 then that may be the way to go. Glad you got something from the visdeo, and all discussion is good in my book.

    I notice when they sell boats 10😊😊 15 20 30 years old they never mention the electric which i think on a boat is one of the most important things there have been a few fires they are horrific , when buying a boat this is one of the most important things 🎉

      You are spot on, a lot of my work is when boats change hands and they realize they have issues. I am a big fan in keeping things as simple as possible, to cut down on the masses of wiring needed.

    Great video, thank you so much! I have a few questions if you have the time and patience to help me out? I’ve just received my new lithium 460 ah from another company called roamer which looks the same size as this one in your video. I want to install it on my aqualine, replacing the current lead batteries. The lead batteries are currently outside and I want to have the lithium battery inside under the entrance stairs to keep it warmer than outside in engine bay. It would be next to the inverter. Would it be easier to use one of my exiting leisure batteries as a buffer as I’ve got two alternators? Or connect it through the starter battery?

      Sorry for delay, I'm on winter break. Use one of your existing leisure batteries as a buffer, and keep the starter battery charging seperate. This is the way I have installed lithium on a few boats now. Does that brand of lithium have its own heating?

      Yes Webasto can be controlled by any device with a volt free contact. Webasto have a device called Thermconnect.
