your a man after my own heart , as i to think its about the hunt not the size of the antlers and there meant to provide meat to us and our families . greatstory line kinda a dying art you did a great job ,

Thanks!
Enjoyed the story! Congrats on a nice trophy! I don't chase horns either, but it's nice to get a "giant' every now and then!
@@RobertEatonOutdoors I’ve always felt like it’s something that you earn. You hunt long enough and eventually you get a good one.

Great stuff really enjoyed it, I’m kind of the same way, it’s not knowing every deer on the property from trial cameras pictures , just the adventure of the unknown.thanks for sharing
@@KevinRedford-g8r it’s like fishing. The exciting part is not knowing what’s under the water.
I don’t know what you talking about that’s a great buck! Especially with a tradbow. Congrats on a heck of a buck
@@Crabbthecaveman thank you!
I liked what you said and the whole story of it but, when you said you were glad you were able to end the suffering of the deer that you ended up getting rather than the one that you ended up injuring and wasn't able to get any meet from it, it kinda made me think then why would you rather have taken that deer, then the one that you injured?
@@wpmissourioutdoors7071 basically, if I have to choose between antlers and meat I choose meat. But since this deer was sick I would rather figure out another way to get meat and end the suffering. That other buck was nice, but ultimately wasn’t the target deer and thankfully his wounds weren’t fatal in the end. It was an odd circumstance but certainly worked out.
Everything you just said I agree with. Trail cameras modern technology is removing the skill of hunting the same way using a crossbow or compound bow does compared to traditional archery gear. However hunting today is different than in the 90’s farmers would give you permission back then. I remember hearing the old timers talk about the what was happening down in Texas with leasing land and charging for hunts, I thought they were being old and crazy. Turns out they were right. America is slowly turning into old Europe, where the wealthy get to hunt. The public land in America has been overhyped by RUclips and tv You literally cannot get way from people in the Colorado mountains anymore. You’re blessed to have property you can hunt.
Preach brotha!!!!
Good stuff. Is that the seat you always use?
@@BigGameVision this season it was yes.
@ thank you. I only got a few days left here in GA and I’m going on the ground. I’m sure I’m over thinking it but my biggest concern was what seat to use and seat height. I got a couple of those but wasn’t sure. Thanks man. Love your content. It’s very helpful.
@ if you live in GA and want some very helpful information, watch my friend Robert Carter. He’s something of a legend down there .
what are those creams around you at the ending of the video ?
People screeching tires.
I have some trees in the lower part of the land that my son's horse decided to debark. They have since died. They have been that way for over a year. Would those be ok to use if they were straight? They are probably hickory, but some are larger than 8 inches in diameter.
Take a good look at the bark cause they are probably oak trees. Horses like to eat the bark off of white oaks for some reason or another. As to them being any good for a bow, hard to say. If the horses have bit into the growth rings then it will be no good.
@@EthanPageHunter I'll take a look and maybe some pictures. Thanks for the instruction.
How does the bark come off of that hackberry when you decide to make a bow? Do you take the bark off right away?
@@aaronhollenbeck2880 I leave bark on for the drying process. You have to carefully remove bark and cambium all the way to the first ring with winter harvest. It doesn’t peel like in the summer.
@EthanPageHunter Just curious. I harvest all mine in the late winter early spring. It slides right off then as I'm sure you know. I don't have a problem chasing a ring but it's a lot more work.
@ oh I much more enjoy peeling bark hahaha
Great information just keep it simple, December January, easy to remember vs all that stuf 😊
I got into making self bows about 2 years ago now and i took my first deer with one this hunting season! Ive never heard this perspective on when to cut staves but you got me thinking i should go cut down another hickory for the stave pile. Excited to see some build alongs in the future. Happy New Year!
@@stevenkeil7869 can’t hurt. Good luck!
Arrow flight is way more about properly tuning your arrow (shaft) to your bow and the biggest key to that is spine than the type of fletching you use. Proper spine is best found by bare shaft tuning by adjusting nock height and trimming the arrow very slightly over and over along with adjusting head weight. Feathers will not be damaged or worn with a properly tuned arrow because they won't even touch the riser. Feathers can easily be treated to withstand water, but even an untreated water soaked feather can fly very well. Even a dramatically damaged feather will fly well. A damaged feather will fly much better than a damaged vane. BUT, you do you and enjoy the flight of the arrow. That's all that matters.
@@ejesoriginal the information in this video was given that you have a properly tuned arrow. Thanks for the input though 🤙🏼
Should I look for the same qualities in a Hickory? We have a few in the yard, but I think some are older. I am pretty sure we have Hackberry. That odd-looking bark looks familiar.
Yes, you will see odd grain showing through bark but on white woods it’s not as critical. You just don’t want anything with a real aggressive twist.
The #1 key is play the wind direction you have to beat the #1 deer defense is the nose!
I might want to come and visit you. I live in south central Missouri ... below Rolla by about an hour. Yes. It is probably a hike to your neck of the wood, but, well, you know, right? :) I read in one of your posts that Hickory works as well. Is this the Hackberry you are talking about: mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/common-hackberry
Why have i read do it in warm weather?
The only advantage that warm months and high sap flow have, is that you can easily strip the bark and establish the back of your bow on white woods. However, it takes months or years to dry.
Happy New Years!

Enjoyed this video! This year was my first of hunting from a tree! I grew up hunting in Arizona mountains, and we stalked deer. We found game trails in the early morning and did like you…hide in the contrast. Scratch tree limbs with antlers, clack them together, and wait! All my deer as a teen were killed by stalking. I do not like tree stands!

May have to steal some hair die from the old lady!
I think deer can see the color blue so idk @EthanPageHunter
@ hahahahahhahahaha you just made my night 😂 most of the younger crowd wouldn’t even understand that one!
Do you know of any brands of face paint that doesn't come off as soon as wipe the sweat from your brow? I quit using what I have, because after 5 minutes it's on the backs of my hands and not my face lol.
I have some Dead Down Wind stuff I am trying. That is definitely the downside to it.
I hear you, but it looks like you are hunting in the summer time, there's not near the cover in dead winter.
Late season definitely demands change in tactics. Even late fall when foliage is off the trees and understory is dead. A good brush blind or pit blind is a must at that point.
I grew up shooting archery because my cousin was an olympian and got me into it at young age. As a young teen I felt very comfortable shooting instinctively. When I was 14 I took a shot at a javelina at close range and missed by feet. I went to using a sight and never went back.
Confidence is everything. With enough practice and maybe using something like the gap method, I have no doubt you could get back out there and be successful.
definitely going to use this on January 2nd
@@thorsalgard9516 best of luck
