How a Chronic Pain Loop Gets Wired In: Hebb's Law
Hi there,
Today I talk about an easy neuroscience concept that explains how a chronic pain loop gets wired into your system.
It's called Hebb's Law (or Hebbian Theory), and it explains why chronic pain and symptoms seem to happen without your control.
It's not just about pain either. Functional symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastric reflux, migraine, eczema, chronic fatigue, and dysmenorrhea are also subject to Hebb's Law.
There's good news though, you brain wired in the pain and symptoms, and your brain can wire them back out.

      Hi, According to pain researcher and author, Alan Gordon, when symptoms flare up after exertion, it's most likely TMS. The brain has made an association that walking leads to pain. Hopefully his words will reassure you. And remind yourself how resilient your body is, walking is safe and won't do tissue damage to your feet. Thanks for being here and don't stop trying!

    I have dry eyes and feel pain when I watch television or read books. Doctors have noticed a decrease in oil in my eyes, but the pain is sooo annoying. I have various other pain problems in my body which is assume to be TMS, but could dry eyes also be a symptom?

    • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 2 дня назад

      Hi, I had an ophthalmologist say something to me one day that made me believe dry eyes are another TMS symptoms. "Some people have very dry eyes and no pain at all and others have only mildly dry eyes and have a lot of pain." Also, symptoms that show up at the same time each day or with specific activities are often TMS. The glands that affect the moisture in your eyes will be influenced by the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance in your nervous system, so using these techniques to dial down the danger response in your brain can help!

    Hey Christine, thanks for putting this together! I recently heard or TMS and have been diving into "Healing Back Pain The Mind Body Connect" by John E. Sarno. I have been told I have a bulging disc and a protruding disc in my lower back. Ive been dealing with it for the past 8 months and nothing has been working. I've tried everything except for surgery. I relate to a lot of the symptoms of TMS although what is holding me back is that my back is not tender to touch and it is very swollen and has been for a while. I read in the book that inflammation is not a symptom of TMS. I have tingling and burning pain in both of my legs that randomly throughout my legs. Sometimes both, sometimes just one, etc. I can only stand and sit for about 20 minutes without the pain becoming way worse.Also my butt has never hurt and I heard that is common for people with a herniated disc and TMS. I'm confused if I have TMS or the pain is truly coming from the bulging discs/nerve irritation/ inflammation.

    • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 2 дня назад

      Hi, I'm glad you found my channel, and thanks for the note. You describe a lot of clues that this is TMS. Remind yourself that almost every adult has some form of bulging discs whether or not they have pain. It's a common "normal abnormality". Even if there was an original tissue irritation that started the pain, 8 months is enough time for tissues to heal. Any remaining pain is being generated by the brain. The randomness of the tingling and burning is another strong clue for TMS. It sounds like you check many of the boxes from the FIT assessment. You may also like reading Alan Gordon's book, The Way Out. He went through symptoms very similar to yours. I assume that you've had imaging like x-ray, CT, or MRI to rule out anything unusual. As long as you've done your due diligence, you can move on with both feet in the TMS camp.

      There does seem to be a correlation of neurodivergence and chronic musculoskeletal pain/fibromyalgia. But, don't let that make you think you can't be helped. The neurodivergent brain has a lot of characteristics that can contribute to chronic pain, but the brain is very resilient when it comes to learning. The personality traits of chronic pain and ADHD/ASD also have a lot of overlap. But again, we can take steps to turn down the dial. Thanks for being here and thanks for sharing that knowledge with us here.

    Hey dr Christine . Do you think taking a reactine every day for itchiness is doing the same thing ? The thing is I know my itchiness /alergys is another symptom that I have had from the beginning of this mind body journey (13 years ish ) only thing is I have tried not to take reactine before and I can’t make it past 48 hours . • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 4 дня назад

      Hello, Itching, like pain, is a common and normal reaction to a sudden event, but you have to strongly suspect it's a mind-body symptom when it doesn't go away after the typical amount of time required for healing. It's possible you've gotten stuck in a loop with the medication and the itching. You're brain may assume you will itch if you don't take it. As you know, feeling itchy only gets worse the more you think about it, focus on it, or get frustrated by it - all common features of a mind-body symptom.

    Can TMS work if you get numbness in your feet ? After standing for a while I get pain in my back then numbness in my feet. Dr. Told me it’s stenosis and you can’t cure this 😢

    • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 4 дня назад

      Hi, Numbness is a very common TMS symptom. Are your feet actually numb, as in you could step on a piece of glass an not feel it? Or is it more of a tingly or burning sensation? As long as your medical doctor has ruled out serious medical conditions (like diabetes), move forward with trusting that the sensation is being generated in the brain. I think the video that comes out next (on Thursday 10/17) is going to help explain what's happening.

    • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 4 дня назад

      I have one more thought. While x-rays or MRIs will always show stenosis in your spine, that doesn't mean you will always have symptoms. See if you can separate the two. So the doctor was only partially correct. The stenosis isn't going to change. BUT the symptoms can change because of the TMS work you're doing.

    I agree that we excel at learning, but I'm not sure I agree that we're better suited to rewiring. If anything all the research on reduced pruning of autistic brains would lead one to the conclusion that it's more difficult to rewire, because old pathways and such aren't being 'cleaned up' as much. That's why autistic minds are sometimes referred to as "sticky brains" (hate that term btw!) Anecdotally I did Primal Trust after self-studying TMS/Norman Doidge/etc, and then moved onto Haven more recently (which has been incredible). I learned all the information extremely quickly, and within my study group everyone looked for my help on that front. Despite learning the material more quickly and deeply, and integrating nearly everything, I still feel that I struggled more than the average person (that was actually trying) on the rewiring front - I've noticed the same in my fellow autistics. While I made incredible symptom progress (I went from not being able to roll over in bed sometimes week 1, to not able to sit up for more than an hour, and within a few weeks of that I was sitting up for 10 hours per day), I found that things such as phobias, many symptoms, emotional repression, limiting beliefs, exiled parts, and general inner work were much more difficult for me than others. I started mentoring people that needed it (for free, of course) 6 or so months into my journey, and everyone I mentored got better at a faster rate than I did. I'm about 1.5 years in now and I'm just now starting to see solid progress on the lingering symptoms and psyche 'blocks'. It's very possible this is a personal issue for me due to how severely I repressed and pushed my entire life - there were (and still are) a LOT of layers to get through. Other people I worked alongside seemed to almost instantly be able to work through these emotional things, while I was constantly bumping up against invisible walls. It took a lot of time, trial, and error to slowly dismantle everything and start to really change - and I can feel I still have a ways to go. Parts work, somatics, and my therapist hammering in self-compassion for a year straight were what seemed to finally push me through my stagnation phase. Even seemingly small breakthroughs end up creating huge progress down the line, so I'm continuing to celebrate every win. Just wanted to share my 2 cents!

    I don't know if I am neuro divergent but, since a young child I have had insomnia, anxiety and been very sensitive to discomfort. One of my earliest memories of this was when I was about 7 and I got some lace up shoes. I drove myself mad trying to get both shoes tied up exactly the same tightness. You mentioned about this type of thing in one of your previous videos. I have had numerous TMS symptoms over the years and chronic pain for 29 years. Your videos are giving me so much hope. Thank you.

    • @drchristinebradstreet
      @drchristinebradstreet 4 дня назад

      Hello, I can relate to that experience! I find it helpful to, little by little, practice being comfortable with the discomfort. The brain can pay much more attention than necessary to a minor nuisance like shoelaces, and it becomes a "danger signal". Thus, the sense of urgency to "fix" it. If you practice sitting calmly with that minor nuisance, the brain learns it's not in danger, and the urgency settles down. That can have spillover effects into less pain, dysfunction, and anxiety in other parts of your body and life. You don't have to make yourself suffer, and you don't have to force yourself to try to be comfortable for the whole day. Just practice it for a few minutes at a time with various things, and over time, your brain will become less reactive. I used this technique to train my brain to not be bothered by bright lights, sunlight, smells/scents, and motion. Thank you for being here and I'm glad my videos give you hope!

    Thank you for this video. I am plagued by uncertainty to the point of extreme difficulty making decisions. What if this, what if that, what if the other. It invades everything from which item to order for lunch in a restaurant to which flight to choose for my vacation (and before that, which destination!). But interestingly, I have just recently noticed that when I wake up in the morning, most of the time nowadays, I hardly perceive my tinnitus but by the end of the day, usually, it’s going to seem louder, especially if it’s been a decision-heavy day. Can it really and truly be as simple as telling myself repeatedly that whichever I decide, I’m really going to be ok? Cuz at the time, it feels VERY consequential. I mean, I do truly know that it doesn’t make any difference at all if I have the burger or the quesadilla but it FEELS (in my brain) like there’s an actual right decision. Pfewf…Im tired just being me. 🤦‍♀️😊

As simple as it sounds, keep working at really knowing that all will be ok. Try getting quiet and asking yourself some probing questions. Do you trust yourself? Can you look within for answers instead of looking to others? Are you afraid of making mistakes and why? As you grow your internal sense of strength and power, I think you're day to day decisions will become easier. Thanks for being here!

    I would really appreciate if you would integrate autism into these TMS discussions. You're the only autistic individual I've found discussing TMS, and it'd be really nice if these topics could be brought together, since there's evidence of ASD coming with a 'different' nervous system. I'd love to hear about your personal experience doing TMS and nervous system work, and if you feel that differs at all from a non-autistic experience. Based on my own anecdotal evidence, I see a large difference in myself and my autistic friends that have done this work versus others. I'd love to get insight from someone teaching in this field.

      If an event that happened in my childhood is affecting me , how does one go about solving that problem? I know when was 10 my father had a stroke and our whole way of life changed, but what can you do about that now?

      @@joesedlacek7552 Hi. Here are some things I would consider. I would get quiet for a moment and just sit with what that felt like as a kid. Observe the emotions and feelings. Then remind yourself that it's not the event itself that still affects you today, but your memory of it and the thoughts and feelings the memories keep bringing up for you. You are safe now.

      Hello, There's so much that can be said about this. I'll do my best. Trust that over time, you can dial down people pleasing tendencies. There's not really a recipe to follow to stop people pleasing. Like anything else in life, I think you just have to work at decreasing it gradually over time. As you grow yourself on the inside and as you test the waters of saying "no" you'll gradually get stronger in setting boundaries and living your own authentic life. Give yourself credit for your small wins, and don't get discouraged when it sometimes doesn't go well. As fearful as it can feel that someone might not like you, remember that people will never authentically like you when you're not being authentic yourself. As you stop people pleasing, you'll attract just the right people to you. All the best to you!

The purpose is also to teach the brain to be less vigilant to perceived danger. Regarding tips for the discomfort you're feeling all day, you can find many of those in past videos. I watched your video this morning and related to the examples of the perfectionist type of person. I am definitely the person who straightens out pictures - not only mine or friends but if they are crooked in a gallery or a retail outlet, heck, I’ve even reported crooked paintings in museums. So imagine me, trying to decide to take you up on the challenge of letting the imperfect just be, and learning/practising to be ok with it!! Of course, as you know, when you put these things out in the universe, they arrive for you to be tested. Was at a coffee shop today after watching this video, absent-mindedly went to have a sip of my coffee and missed my mouth altogether. lol…so, I blurbed on my clean white t-shirt, spilled on my purse and also had a puddle on the saucer. My usual response in this kind of situation would be to get to the bathroom and immediately try to rinse out the stains and fret about the possibility that the stain would set or the mess on my purse, etc etc…did anybody see me, what are they gonna think as I’m walking around with a big brown wet spot on my shirt….you know the drill. Today, I just sat there. I took a few breaths and really deliberately sat in my chair, didn’t go to the bathroom, didn’t try to leave immediately. Just sat there and thought to myself, “a you’re absolutely fine, nobody died…so what…this has happened to lots of other people”. I wasn’t happy about it and it WAS actually difficult to do but later in the day, my husband commented that when I spilled the coffee he was shocked that I didn’t get up and go immediately to the bathroom! I told him I had watched this video and that my thought process was that I was just gonna sit with it and let it just be for the moment and that if the stain ended up setting, well, I’d just buy myself a new white t-shirt and be done with it. Not the end of the world. Somebody else reading this comment may indeed think ‘of course that’s what you do, it’s just a t-shirt…it’s just an accidental spill…you’re only human and humans make mistakes and have accidents.’ And you would be absolutely correct. I can also assure you that every other perfectionist out there reading this is high-fiving me and recognizing it’s no small thing. Thank you for these videos…I find the information shared very very helpful.

    Alan Gordon and others touch on this as well. You can't do all this with the focus of just reducing symptoms. It's easier said than done but for example you don't somatic track to turn off the symptom then and now. It is rather as you said, untangling the web, showing and teaching the brain that yest while you feel or experience this funny symptom however it is safe and not from a damaged broken body as well as providing examples of when you didn't have symptoms or how they turn on and off etc. That said, I can do better with that myself, all this writing to further prove to my self,lol.
