Main thing is that you were both back safely. Till next time. 🎣 🦑
Very true mate👌
The Aux debate is a real dilemma. I don't use one and luckily have never needed one in over 20 years (that's me jinxed!). It would alter the way my boat balances and I think affect performance and efficiency of the main engine. Having said that if I broke down without one I would no doubt immediately regret it! Great to see the help you received and the boating community looking after one another. I am sure you would do the same for anyone who needed the help. Be good to hear about how you coped with the situation as it arose and the action you took 👍
Thanks Gareth, I didn’t want to film as the situation unfolded as safety was my priority but I will give a full rundown when I’m back on the water. It’s the first time I’ve needed a tow in and I was lucky that an expert skipper responded to the request for help put out by Falmouth Coastguard for me. I got rid of my auxiliary engine as I thought it couldn’t very well be relied upon due to the fuel going stale (despite intentions to run it every fortnight!). Someone on here advised me about Aspen fuel, which is ethanol free and long lasting so I’m currently having a rethink about the aux engine.
Bad luck Rob. Sounds fuel related to me, maybe the cold snap has caused some separation. I also don't use an aux, as it is a lot of extra transom weight to drag around for almost no use. Hope to see you out there again soon, and hoping our weather will be kinder for the rest of the winter, as I need to get on the Skerries for some Spurs.
You’re right mate, I have it back from the boatyard now but not on the water. Looks like a fuel or fuel tank issue which I need to investigate a bit more before I re-launch. Hope the weather gets better soon for those Skerries trips👍🎣
So pleased you are well and both got back safely, thank the Lord 👍
Thanks John👍
Always enjoy the videos, bad luck on this occasion. Will you be considering an auxiliary in the future after this problem?
Thanks Mark, yes, I’m definitely re-thinking the aux engine. I got rid of my auxiliary for two reasons: first, my replacement Yamaha should be very reliable and limp mode should get me home in most circumstances (but not all, as I found out to my cost). And secondly, when I previously had an aux engine I found it difficult to keep the fuel fresh so the aux engine couldn’t really be relied upon. From comments on here I’ve heard of Aspen fuel which looks like a good option for the spare engine so yes, after this incident I’m definitely reconsidering an auxiliary engine.
Store the fuel separately in small gerry can and use the fuel every 3-6 months and refresh it! Use it in car or something or have a way to take a feed from your main tank! If you have a petrol engine @@fishingsalcombe
Hope it's nothing to serious with the engine and you are back on the water soon. Going to have to go back to the bit explaining the tides, weight and lures etc bit until I understand it but thanks for explaining.
Thanks Bob, my videos are off the cuff so I hope the tide explanation comes across ok when you re-watch it. 👍🎣
@@fishingsalcombe Yes, your explanations always make sense but just takes a while for it to sink in with me, and it things like that which are not talked about which can make a big different. Many thanks.
Nightmare! Good to see Ness though. Hope the squid is tasty
Thanks Bri, the squid was very good!
WOW, now that is a stroke of bad luck!!! Thank god you got help from a fellow fisherman aided by the coastguard, massive thanks to both of them otherwise you might be drifting who knows where to and for how long. You are an experient sea angler but i think for Vanessa it must have felt very frigtning. Hope she feals better after this event and hope she understands that she was safe all the time 👍. Not only because of the help you received but i am sure, seeing how calm you always are in your video's, your precense must have helped her aswell. Hope this was a fluke and will happen never again. Hope to see you "here" soon again. Greetz from Stipo
Thanks Stipo, I will definitely be back and Vanessa will go boating again but maybe in summer next time!
Would love to see a follow up video up what happend with the engine and any repair that was needed, Thanks for the video - L C
Thank you, I’ll definitely do that when I’m fully sorted and back on the water - sometime after Storm Bert has passed through!
Ahh bad luck hope you get all sorted
Thanks mate, almost sorted, just need to get to the bottom of a fuel tank issue.
@fishingsalcombe I take it you do have a racor fitted and that it's easily accessible? These are really necessary on all boats, saved my bacon many times
Yes mate, no sign of water or contamination in the bowl though.
Hope it hasn’t put your stepsister off I know you’ll not be too worried it’s part of fishing and these things rarely happen pleased everyone is ok and not an expensive engine fix
Not put off but I think it might be summer and daylight for her next trip out!
@ yes that’s when I’ll be out next it’s snowing like hell up north today
Spare 8 10 hp will take you away from rocks and get you home stay safe always
Yes, I might have to re-think that one!
Not a good day ,glad you got a tow back and are safe , hope the engine is not to expensive to repair
Thanks mate, ok with the engine, I just need to pin down how I had a fuel contamination issue.
Glad you got back safe rob. Hope the engine isn’t to bad or to expensive to repair 😊
All ok thanks mate, fuel contamination which I haven’t got to the bottom of yet.
@ I’m sure your get it sorted 😎
Hope the engine isn't too bad mate
Not too bad mate. Injector clean at the boatyard from contaminated fuel.
Used to fish on the first Anglo dawn with Ted cook he knew his stuff, lovely squid you caught thanks
Just ate the squid tonight - very good! Ted Cook certainly pulled some fish out and the Anglo Dawn is still a great charter from Salcombe.
Good to see you back in safe
Yes, I was a fair way out when it happened with no other boats in sight. Falmouth Coastguard did a sterling job and Malcolm, skipper of the Anglo Dawn, was a star with an expert tow into harbour.
Hope the engine is nothing to serious
Thanks David, the boatyard has sorted it out, looks like fuel contamination in one tank got into the injectors. The injectors are now cleaned but I haven’t got to the bottom of the contamination issue from fresh fuel.
Brave this week Rob 😮
That was last Saturday Blair, last of the calm days!
How do you fix the bait table onto the back of your boat Rob ?
It’s Railblaza table on Railblaza starport mounts Blair. I have the fixed mounts on the transom which works really well for me, not convinced that the rail mounts would be strong enough.
@ Thanks rob
I have asked everyone what size fenders they use and have never had the same size yet so if you can remember please can you measure when you get a minute. Thank you and I really appreciate it
Hi, I’m not surprised you’ve had a range of answers as the size and shape is down to circumstances and personal preferences, although most manufacturers will recommend a size of fender for the size of boat. I use Majoni size 2 (58x15cm). I think the recommended size is size 1 for boats up to 6m but the size 2 seemed to be a better fit for me. Hope that helps👍
@@fishingsalcombe yes I got told size 2 but in my local chandelier they looked small as if they where marked up wrong so I am going to order online but it’s a minefield. Thank you for the info
@@fishingsalcombe I saw yours on the warrior 175 review and thought they are just what I need.
Hi mate, I'm really enjoy your videos and the advice you have given especially as I haven't a clue what I'm looking at. I bought an ugly stick that you were recommending (12-20lb) but because I'm a bit stupid🤪 I just presumed they were all the same type but have learned that you get them in different sizes even if they are still in the 12-20lb class. I don't suppose you know the length of your Ugly stick and what the numbers printed on the rod actually say as I don't want to buy the wrong type....again😀. as the one I purchased off Amazon is not what I thought it would be. It has the ref number of USSP702M stamped on it and and appears to be very thin/light. Hopefully that makes sense
Glad you’re enjoying the videos mate. Here’s a link to the Ugly Stik that I use: www.veals.co.uk/product/shakespeare-ugly-stik-gx2-12-20lb/?_gl=1*1o7n15h*_up*MQ..*_ga*MjA4OTU3NjcxMy4xNzMwNzUyNzYx*_ga_S6GBFTE91S*MTczMDc1Mjc2MC4xLjAuMTczMDc1Mjc2MC4wLjAuMA..
@@fishingsalcombe Hi Rob, thanks for the reply and the link it's greatly appreciated and sorry I didn't notice it sooner👍 I'll get one ordered as soon as I can, I'll still not catch anything mind but at least I'll look the part!😂
Great channel. My lure setp ups are very similar which is good to know! Just haven't got which lures to use in my area dialed in yet. Keep up the good work.
Thanks bud! If you fancy trying a different lure I fished with a mate at the weekend and had a lot of success with the new Renaissance Eel from Lazy Lures. Same set up, fished over a reef with a knot and a half of tide running. 👍🎣
great stuff here, and its interesting to see how other anglers do their thing, e.g up here in Eastbourne I guess we have much shallower water (60m max), i only use mono for easier knotting, abrasion resistance and as I drift at the same speed as the tide, my lure is pretty much straight down.- my boat is not so affected by the wind, but lighter boats are.... apart from that same rods and reels, (ugly stik 12-20 is plenty) leadheads for shallow water and boom and shad for deeper...
Cheers bud, it would be great not to be affected by the wind, it’s a regular battle down here in the south west from a small boat!👍🎣
Hi Rob , thanks for your help on the gear earlier , loving the channel and have sent it on to loads of people , question please , which ugly stika would you recommend for spinning those sidewinder lures and is your gx 2 12/20 heavy enough for the bigger fish or do you use a 20/30 ? many thanks blair
Hi Blair, thanks for the feedback, glad you’re enjoying the videos. For spinning with lures I use an Abu Ike 7-24 gram spinning rod and I have this with a Penn Clash 2, 3000. It’s great for casting and will also handle a decent fish but I only use it for casting lures or for light work with a maximum of a 4oz lead. The 12-20 GX2 is ample for the size of fish I catch. It will easily manage double figure bass, cod and pollock and I’ve had ling up to 19lb on it this year. If you’re out on the Rutts after big ling a 20-30 will bully them out of their holes quicker but a 12-20 is much more fun I would say. Cheers. Rob 👍🎣
Well done stuck it out in tough conditions just shows its not always fish fish fish when out boat fishing lovely Pollack for your rewards keep the videos coming there great👍
Thank you! Yes, it was tough going but the pollock saved the day 👍
Well, those looked really tough conditions. A great effort. Better luck next time. Thx for sharing. 🎣👍
It was a bit testing mate!👍
It's not just about good boat tackle etc, you gotta be able to fish?😢
🤣🤣
I really like the way you show things warts and all. Good honest real life material which reminds us why its called fishing and not catching! Makes it so much better when the stars do decide to align! :)
Very true 👍
What a superb video, I love your no nonsense way of putting things across, I am new to boating and sea fishing so I have learned so much from your advice
Thanks Stuart, happy that you’re enjoying the videos👍🎣
Good true to life video at least you plucked one out and haven’t got to go to the chippy for your supper nice tip about the frozen bait also
Thanks Kevin, yes, just avoided the blank!👍🎣
A good video all the same i enjoyed the footage especially the time lapse in the river, greetings from Ireland.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the time lapse👍🎣
Well done, Rob. Looked challenging. I planned to paddle out tomorrow, but too windy. Sunday looks doable. I'm hoping for a squid or two, and maybe red gurnard, before they leave for the season. Keeping an eye on the southerly swell!
Good luck chasing the squid Martyn, there are quite a few about now👍🎣
@fishingsalcombe thanks, Rob. It's looking good for me tomorrow (small tide and wind). Squid can be frustrating to catch, of course! I'm getting the 12 - 20lb Ugly Stik. Is yours the GX2 one? I think I have a spinning rod from the same range.
Yes, mine is the GX2, they also make a kayak version which I think is just a bit shorter?
@@fishingsalcombethank you. It's crazy how much cheaper Ugly Stik rods are compared to back in the day. I'll do more research😊
Yes, I think they’re very good value for money
Not catching your target species, but still.....getting stuck in the wreck twice, with fish, and retreving it from the wreck with the fish both times. You are either a very good fisherman or super lucky hahaha. I will keep it that you are very very good at what you are doing, but....i would buy a lotteryticket now😊. As usual a very nice video to start my weekend. By the way, what is a "droge" you mentioned early in the video? Greetz from Stipo from Holland
Definitely had a bit of luck on my side Stipo! The drogue is like a mini parachute that you can deploy of the bow to add drag and slow down wind drift. It won’t stop tidal drift but it can take maybe half a knot off your wind drift. 👍🎣
@@fishingsalcombethanks for clarafying this
First time for all three. Nice trip down the estuary good vid again and you can't win all the time. Plus your last video very informative 👍
Thanks Lee, yes, it would be great to have fine weather and lots of fish every trip! 👍
first again, making a habit of this lol. good work as usual, thanks
Cheers mate, first again🤣👍
Great video but please wear a Life jacket....
Hi Andy, I have a full video here talking about life jackets. Please have a look and happy to discuss anything further 👍 The Life Jacket Debate ruclips.net/video/TeY6514pKQ0/видео.html
Great watch for a new to lure fisherman very informative, cannot wait to put in to practice.
Thank you, good luck on the lures!👍🎣
Always great videos, very educational, thanks very much, stay safe 👌
Thanks very much John👍🎣
Informative video - thank you. How long does it take to get from Kingsbridge to the mouth of the estuary? And do you ever fish in the estuary?
Thank you. It’s 30-40 minutes from Kingsbridge to The Bar, depending on the tide. The estuary can be very productive but I rarely fish it as I prefer to be out at sea and not dealing with weed on the line. 👍
Hi what brand and size booms do you use or does it not really matter
Hi, I use Cox and Rawle uptide booms as I find them much stronger than the hockey stick shaped booms. These always straighten with a decent fish on them. I use ones that are about 5 inches long but only because that size fits well in my lure box!
@@fishingsalcombe thanks for that much appreciated currently watching the back catalogue of posts from your channel you seem to have very chilled out attitude towards fishing have watched all of mr lockers and manic fishing and I am enjoying yours equally many thanks
Appreciate the feedback, thanks Kevin👍
Thanks for sharing. Some excellent tips, and all very well explained. A nice mixed bag for the table as well 👍
Cheers Gareth 👍
Your Palomar knot looks like a Rapala knot
Yes, that was my ‘sausages’ moment! I put in the description that I’d made that gaff but you’re right, Rapala knot for the lures, Palomar on the swivels 👍🎣
Very enjoyable session and I'm now very interested in trying lure fishing for the first time. Very informative thank you
Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it and good luck if you give it a go 🎣👍
Another great video, Rob. Plenty of squid about and the John Dory is an amazing bonus! I have a combined 6oz / 8oz ball lead mold if you ever wanted to make your own ones. Not far from you.😊
That’s very kind thanks Martyn, I’ll bear that in mind when it’s time for winter jobs! 👍
@@fishingsalcombe no problem. You'd be very welcome.
What booms do you use
I always use Cox and Rawle uptide booms (Ashby’s!)
just seen you mention them later rob , thanks
got them from ashbys rob , what weight mono on the rig set up ? they worked great this evening off the rocks at thurlestone , couple of cracking sea bass on lures 👍
Nice one! I’ve not had too many takeable size bass this year. I use 30lb mono for the rig body then fluorocarbon for the hook length, usually 15lb
Cracking tutorial on the set up and vid thanks 😊 👍
Cheers Paul, happy that you enjoyed it! 👍
Great video. The loop over the lure is hopefully going to save me a lot of tangles!
Thanks Martin, hope it works for you!👍🎣
