Tunisian knit stitch. Left side increase.
Hi mom❤
@@chattye5549 hi 😊
I have slowed the clip down to see where the hook went in and how the yarn was pulled through. Nice stitch ! Thanks !
@@Pouquiloury I hope it worked for you then. I will try to do better next time :) And yes, it IS an awesome stitch!
I love this border !
Excellent video that really helped me make this stitch. Thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful! :)
This is what is called the Chinese Waitress Cast On in knitting. It's my favorite. I had just gotten the idea to try it for Tunisian with two hooks when your video popped up. 😃
Lovely, that you like this! -- I checked the Chinese Waitress Cast On for knitters now. I'm not a knitter, but it does look very similar. Some of the videos include a lot of twisting and yarn between the hooks (needles). I wonder, if that is necessary when you knit?
Hola. Muy buenas tus explicaciones. Me gustaría saber cómo disminuir del lado derecho. Gracias.
Thx. My Spanish isn't good, I hope English works for you. I might make a video about increasing one day (and increasing at right side of the work too). There are more ways to do this and different stitch patterns work better with some methods. You can do an extra yarn-over og hook under the return pass (between stitches). Do this 1-2 stitches from the edge.
Thanks!
thank you so much
Honestly helpful to know what to avoid, thanks 🙏
Question: Will this make a regular chain or a stretchy chain?
I would say a regular chain row IS somewhat stretchy. At the least if you make the first row of stitches in the back bump. The casting-on here has a similar stretchiness as a regular stretchy chain row. If you cast-on using ONE hook (see the video: Tunisian Cast On - Using one hook), and want it to be stretchy, then you need to watch your tension, so the loops under the hook stay loose.
I'm with Cindy. I would have liked to see where the hook was going through on the back side. 😪
Hi, Sometimes we can't get everything in one video. I do have another new video showing a bit more of the backside. Look for "Make the 'right' Waistcoat Stitch Version"
@@StoneGnome Thank you. That is helpful!! Do you find the stitches stack better when you don't include that back bar?
Hi @@joelleamaya7694, yes definitely! I'm certain we are talking about two versions of the same stitch. This is why I made the new video about the waistcoat stitch version I prefer. This week also published a half mitten pattern utilizing the stitch. It matters what waistcoat stitch version you use there. You get a comfy'er and lighter mitten if you use the waistcoat stitch that stacks better.
Tak!😁
Very great help, thank you!😊
Thanks ! Very useful
I have been doing Tunisian crochet for YEARS and it has never occurred to me to do this. For once, I'm glad I kept scrolling cause it brought me to this video. ❤
<3 Nice to be helpful! - You can cast on with one hook also. Look for the video 'Tunisian Cast on - using one hook'.
Well I still can't tell if we insert hook to the right or left of the back bar!?! Can you advise please. Thanks
Hi Cindy, to not include the bar(s) at the back of a stitch, then insert the hook before the bar. If you are right-handed, this will be on the right side of the bar(s). If you are left-handed it will be on the left side of the bar(s). I hope this helps?
Can you do a locked loop stitch when working a double crochet project?
Great explained! Thanks so much!
Can you share the link of the crochet hook you use please
Thanks a lot. I found your channel a few days ago. I learned a lot from your great tutorials. Bosnian crochet and other stitches too.
thank you so much for this video! i tried to follow the link on your blog but it was broken. i just happened to find this by searching for “invisible slip knot” on here!! nonetheless, thank you so much!!! it helped infinitely
Thanks!

I used this video to practice the stitches for your hat pattern, and it has been really helpful. Thank you! I have a question about the gauge for the hat: if the gauge is 14 stitches for 4" (as listed in the beginning of the e-book), then for a hat circumference of 20.5 inches you would need 14 x 5.125 stitches, which equals 71; however the hat instructions say to chain 54, which doesn't work for me. If I want to change the number of stitches from those given in the pattern, what multiple of stitches do I need to make the pattern work? I'm guessing the multiple is 3 or 6 (?). If I can find out the multiple of stitches necessary, I'm good to go. Thank you in advance!
Hi Ruth, glad the video could help you :) Am I guessing right, you talk about Evie's hat? The stitch pattern will make the hat quite stretchy, so the hat circumference needs to be smaller than the head circumference. (see page 15) However, I used Scheepjes Merino Soft, which is very very stretchy. If you want to substitute it with a more rigid yarn, then YES, you can go up in size. (Or use a slightly larger hook). The brim pattern has a repeat using 3 stitches (multiple of 3). BUT, If you look closely at the chart and the final rounds, you will need TWO repeats for this. So, unless you want to wing a little different closure, start the brim with a multiple of 6. I hope this helps you. I'll consider updating the pattern to make this more clear. Thanks for asking! I'm happy to assist if you need more help. If possible, then email me (email address in the written pattern). Sometimes RUclips notifications don't reach me.
@@StoneGnome Thank you so much (and I'm sorry I didn't see your email address in the written pattern). You have exactly answered my question: the multiple is 6. This is perhaps the most beautiful crocheted hat I've ever seen. I'm excited to begin work on it. Again, thanks!
@@RuthHenriquez1 Happy to help! Thanks for the nice words. <3 I hope it works well for you.
This is awesome THANK YOU!! Best tip ever!!!
I realize this is an older video and has been a while since last commented - but I have to say THANK YOU! Your video is the 1st I found that mentioned the concept of working Tunisian with both hands and a double-ended hook (both-handed, without turning). I just tested it and it works BEAUTIFULLY and was just what I have been looking for! I know it was meant to explain why you were showing how-to-work 'upside down', but I CAN crochet both-handed and this side-note was a HUGE boon to me. I'm not as smooth right-handed (though practice helps), but I have been wondering this very question for a while now related to Tunisian + double-ended hook - especially for colorwork along these lines without working in 'rounds' (squares usually) to get a 'flat' piece. Today I finally have my answer! The examples on how the vertical bars slant and making them 'look right' (can't just do TSS back and forth to get 'the TSS look'), seeing how the twisted stitch works, I can just do TSS in my 'dumb' hand (easier) and twisted in my 'smart' hand (can handle more complex tasks/hook-work) - or pattern combinations - as long as I'm paying attention to where the yarn is and where it's feeding from. SO AWESOME! Even working upside down is an amazing feat, and I'm sure I'll do some of that too, but I wanted to let you know that a random internet stranger is SUPER GRATEFUL you made that offhand comment some 5 years ago about working back 'other' handed if that were one of your skills/talents. 🥰🥰🥰❣
♥️ awesome Shelley! Happy it worked that weel for you :) For some it is difficult, but for others this is an eye opener. There is just SO much crochet exploration waiting for us out there :D
Thank you! This really helped me :)
Lovely Willow! Always glad to help out :)
WOW! IT HELPED ME A LOT.. thanks a lot i found ur video.. 🙂🙂🙂
Glad it helped!
I’ve done it in a row. So pretty
This is so blinkin' useful and easy !! ❤️ Thank You so much for sharing...😃 x x
Thank you. Wish it was a bit longer!
Thank you. Do you like Tunisian crochet too? If you do, then there is something similar - but more advanced - in this video: ruclips.net/video/xHcwH6dNNO0/видео.html It might look a bit crazy at first :p
Thank you 💖
Legendary tip! Many thanks!
The music is so relaxing!
Such a shame you are no longer doing your channel. I was keen to know how to do the very last row of the twisted, as after passover row, its VERY gappy and unsure how to complete.
Hi LadybirD loves. I’m still here. I’ve just had busy days (months). I’ll add to my list to show more about this twisted stitch. You can join my maillist if you haven’t already, to be sure not to miss it. You find the signup for newsletters at www.stonegnome.com. :)
All good. Real life has to come 1st. I will work it out. Gotta finish it today :)
@@LadybirDloves Find me on Facebook If you like :)
@@LadybirDloves If I read it right, it is your closing off that is gappy? If so, try to do your last row as either slip stitches or single crochet stitches (what you prefer), with the little twist, that you hook into a stitch as you have done throughout the pattern. Your sides can get gappy too. If so I prefer to add a border.
...and if you already tried this :) then tryr to make your closing around the back pass (the chains) too. I found a site where Kim Guzman shows this - almost at the bottom: crochetkim.com/how-to-end-your-tunisian-crochet-binding-off/
thank you so much for sharing this technique. my chains are always different sizes. so much better now.
Glad it helps you :)
Basically a provisional cast-on!
Yes, it probably belongs to the group of provisional cast-ons that knitters have in their toolbox. It might be done a little different here. Not all types of cast-on work well for Tunisian crochet. So, it's more matter of finding a way that works for you and your Tunisian Crochet project.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Working with Bernat Blanket yarn is a nightmare trying to get that first row. Now I don't have to worry about it anymore.
I’m just happy you can use this!
Thank you so much for this. It's really difficult to find tutorials on this type of stitch, I've found. I usually have to try to follow youtube videos in Russian (yikes!) or from other eastern european countries to get this type of info. I'm off to look at your tutorial on how to eliminate ugly starting slip knot next 😊
I'm so glad I could help. <3 If you like slip stitches, then have a look at some of my latest designs. Tessa's Triangles (Hexagon pattern) gives you a free introduction to very new things you can use the slip stitches for.
@@StoneGnome ❤
Brilliant! Thank you.
Thanks ❤
Thank you. I've used this long tail cast on for starting Tunisian crochet. The crochet cast on in your other video I've used for starting ordinary crochet projects. I have an avid dislike for starting any project with a chain.
You are welcome. I get you. It’s much faster this way. Both are good for samples too, so you don’t waste more time on that than necesseary. :)
Love your designs. I’d enjoy seeing more of your work.
Thx :) You can also follow me on Instagram if you haven’t seen that already. I have more photos there of what this hexagon can grow into :) instagram.com/stonegnomedesign/
Thank you, very well explained. Have you tried this to create 2 color Tunisian brioche crochet?
Thank you so much Nancy. I'm not sure this is in the category of brioche? I will have to look into that. I made a pillow pattern this way (2 pillows actually). If you want to have a look, see here: www.stonegnome.com/2017/11/picky-pillows.html
This is really cool and looks less fiddly then the 2 hook method that I did try but I’m curious as to how long the tail needs to be as I’m not a knitter even though I can knit I usually another ball of the same colour of the other end of the same ball to do tge knitting cast on but I don’t think that would work here. Thanks for sharing these great tips with us I’m about to start an Afghan that’s 180 sts wide!!
Thx Allie. About the tail. You can guess and be lucky or have to try again. - OR - you could make a sample with the relevant yarn and hook. Make 20 cast-on stitches, mark the yarn right before the last cast-on and right before the loose yarn end on the hook. Now frog. Then measure how much yarn to use for 20 sts. ->> Using the other end of the yarn ball might be possible. And it is a VERY good idea. Then you’ll first need to figure out how to join the yarn ends in an way you like. Maybe a simple knot will do? Then untie and sew in later - or make a border and hide it in that. :)
When doing this do the hooks have to be the same size?
Hi April, Yes. For a well-formed border, the hooks need to be the same size, to make the V’s the right size. (If you look at the border after making the first row, you will see something that looks like a row of V’s). HOWEVER, there are other ways to cast-on, if you only have one hook. Here is a link for you: ruclips.net/video/SqhG0oFTLxQ/видео.html
Wow no curl. Thank you !
