The Produce Farmer

Добавлен 12 апр 2020
My name is Ryan Martin. I am a first time first generation farm owner. I have 10 years of experience as a fruit and vegetable consultant. I have always wanted to have my own operation and as of Jan 30 2020 I finally have the opportunity to live my dream. I will by growing approximately 25 acres of various produce including 6 high tunnels with various intensive tomato and pepper crops. I intend to limit my help as much as possible to my family of 5 children and wife. My only source of income to pay off my farm loan will be the produce that i grow. I intend to show how I grow all the different crops and educate on problems and issues that appear through time. I hope this channel is interesting as well as educational. Please subscribe

Building my deer fence!!

The deer are getting into my watermelons and causing damage to the Crop. So I need to install my deer fence system that I’ve used the last couple years and works really well. The system and the supplies comes from Premier onesupplies.com in a few weeks I’ll have to put a fence around my pumpkin crop as well. #Watermelon #KeepDeerOut #deerfence #GrowingVeggies #Farming

Sorry
Did you ever make the video about how you got the free greenhouse?
Not yet hopefully in the next week, I can get that done
Not yet, hopefully in the next week, I can get that done!!
Good job guys😊
Thank you for your support!! We couldn’t do any of it without people coming to buy it!! We try our best every day to grow and produce the best food we are able! Thanks again for your encouragement!
I’m so grateful for everything you all produce. I’ve been buying from you since the beginning (around 5 years I believe) and love watching your farm grow every year. Thank you for providing my family with the best! And your kids are so sweet.
Thanks for your loyalty and support!! We couldn’t do it without you!
Come on give them likes
Thanks, very inspiring =) Im wondering how much one of those greenhouses cost to build? and is it possible to cool it down from 40-50 Celsius to 20-30 Celsius ?
Without the heaters cost range from $15 K to $18 K. Heaters are going to be about $3K by themselves keeping in mind you can only cool it down to the temperature that is outside, but you can get roof vents, which will allow you to cool it down, the way you’re mentioning. The downside is roof cost about $10 K as an addition. These are very nice and I would like to do them in the future, but because of the cost, it won’t happen for a while for me.
@@theproducefarmer8427 ok thanks for answering. Ok so you mean that around 28k with the cooling vents? Do you recommend solar for that? Some months it can get up to 40c so I really need to cool it down to at least 25c but don't know how much solar and vents I would need for that in one of your greenhouses?
I think maybe a greenhouse like yours and with a climate battery would be the best option for me..
Great information. Where is the auction? What is it called? Thanks for sharing
This auction that I was at was called Leola Produce Auction in Leola Pennsylvania
I also go to Weaverland Produce Auction and Kutztown Produce Auction, but they are a little bit smaller
Definitely wasn’t haha
The money looks fake to me.
hi ,where did you buy this system please ?
I bought it from a small Amish manufacture. He is able to FedEx them if you’re interested let me know. I can get you his information.
Nice work! How do you manage fertilizer in your no till fields? I don't remember you spreading any on those fields in your other video.
I will spread fertilizer for the pumpkins about three weeks after they are planted. I plant seven rows each section which is 49 feet wide and so I can straddle the center row and broadcast each patch.
some times it takes some time for your veins of water to fill in. it will probably get better in a few weeks
I hope you are right I will not be hooking up to them until fall probably in preparation for next year, but I really hope you are correct
We’ll have to be content to work with it, I’m not spending any more money right now
Well, the dumb thing is all three neighbors around us had 30 gallons at 80 feet so I guess I was just missing
Wow that is crazy to know that you have to go that deep for a little water. I was praying that things would go better the next day for you
Good idea with the bucket. But, if you have raccoons or rat snakes, they will get those nestlings since there is no climbing protection.
Yes, I agree. This video was taken a few years ago before we moved to the farm, almost all of her houses now have baffles.
She also makes me put fishing line in front of the holes to keep the sparrows out!
Will do!! Hopefully put that together shortly!
Let us know I could really use one
Correction…. 😂😂😂
Yeah, in hindsight, I feel kind of dumb about it, but I was just believing what I was told. Guess you can’t always believe everybody. Made for funny memories though.
Very nice well done boys
❤❤❤💕💕💕👍👍👍👍
Thank you for your support.
Good
Hello. What plastic sheet do you use ? I am using an 800 guage / 8 mil thick transparent sheet
The plastic that I was given is a 6 mil sunsaver clear plus UV+IR+AD
8 mil would definitely be super tough
Good thing you have Tarzan working for you
Very true!! He’s a big help! 😂
Turning out very nice
I'm sorry you got hurt there
Haha I asked my dad what it looked like and he said it’s “nothing” so I didn’t bother with it right away. The nurse told me don’t ask my dad next time. Ha Definitely could’ve been worse though.
@@theproducefarmer8427😂😂😂, hope u get well soon
@@shahzadahmedsahi7311 thanks man, I appreciate it!
Thanks for sharing I hope your spring is going good for you guys
Thank you! You too!
Per green house size and cost for per green house?
Greenhouses are approximately 6000 ft.² and about $18,000 apiece
Why are the side walls not inflated
If I was in a colder climate, that would definitely be something to consider, but most of my loss is from the top and is also the easiest to inflate
The fans in between the films
Yes, you attach the fan through the first layer from the inside
What brand greenhouse is this?
What's the dimensions and thickness of the thickness of the arch pipes
Of my head I believe they’re about 3 inches in diameter
Great video. Hope you still get comments and can respond. When you install the second layer of poly, do you wiggle wire over the first wiggle wire on the first poly, or do you remove it and only use one wire for both poly layers? Thanks for your videos.
Yes, you use separate wiggle wire for both layers. Put the first one in and then you put the second one right over top of it. I do have plans to put up one more small greenhouse this fall… This one I will post videos of the progress, and how I do each step.
Excellent instructional video. Thank you very much for taking the time and your knowledge with us, very appreciated here. Subscribed.
Where did you get these houses from?
I purchased them from Beiler’s Greenhouse located in Quarryville, PA. They are an Amish owned company but they are they have the best prices around and good quality.

Thanks for sharing your relaxing day with us. Looks like rain tomorrow😊
Hoping 👍
All your family hard work is paying off. Very nice operation.😊

Hello new subscriber here , I myself would love to have my own ornamental and flowering plant house , I love your videos , very encouraging, informative and straightforward ! Live your dream and May God continue to bless you and your supportive beautiful family 🤗 also despite the green aphids , the flowers are gorgeous, your wife certainly has a green thumb so I think she needs to have her own flower house to live her dream too 😁 ! Stay awesome guys 🌱🌱🪴🌱🌱
Thanks for the encouragement and support!!
Very nice to see the family working together. I was wondering do you start all your plants from seed
Yeah I couldn’t do it without them. I start my pumpkins, green beans, cucumbers and zucchini by seed but the rest I have started for me. Some day I will probably get into that when I have a smaller greenhouse to do it.
@@theproducefarmer8427 thinking about doing an acre of strawberries this fall where would you order the plants from.
If you want plugs to plant in late August, I order them from Rueban Martin I can get you his phone number… He’s in Shipinsburg. He can ship them to you or you can pick them up from him and save the shipping if you want.
Bare roots are cheaper, but you need to plant them here in the next two weeks… and then you need to keep the patch tended for longer as well.
I've never seen a setup like that, did you make the vertical parts? Thanks, Randy
One of the local farmers around here created them, and the produce suppliers started selling them…. They’re a little bit expensive, but I think they work well and last long time.
@@theproducefarmer8427 Awesome, thanks for the reply
Wow what an efficient way to do this! I just found your channel here after stopping to buy some produce last week. It was all very good--and I enjoyed the fresh cheese and yogurt too!
Thanks appreciate it… thank you for all the support! We try and keep everything as fresh and local as possible.
