Join me as I ride around Taiwan drinking coffee, reviewing products, interviewing bike industry folk, checking out awesome routes and events, and generally exploring bike culture here in my adopted home. Former professional cyclist, I now work at the Taiwan Cyclist Federation and on the Taiwan KOM Challenge and as an editor for a magazine, Bicycle Club. I'm the head coach at Crank Punk Coaching Systems and also the official coaching provider for Everesting. Hope you enjoy the videos, many thanks for watching! Check out my site at crankpunk.com/
CYCLING IN FUKUSHIMA JAPAN / TROPHEE DE FUKUSHIMA NOVEAU!
I HEADED to Fukushima in Japan to take part in Japan's longest road race, at 211km and over 3000m of climbing!
Not all went to plan however, but that didn't stop me having a great time and meeting some lovely people, and also learning more about this beautiful area that was so affected by the tsunami in 2011, and how the local people re-built their towns and their societies.
Many thanks to Bicycle Club Japan and the Fukushima Tourism Board for the invite!

CYCLING & CULTURE TOUR to FUKUOKA & KITAKYUSHU

Part two of my recent trip to Fukuoka Prefecture on a 5-day cycling tour, all on town bikes, and with visits to local cultural spots also. I fully recommend heading to Kyushu and to Fukuoka Prefecture in particular, the food is nationally renowned - even by Japanese standards the local cuisine is incredible - and the cycling also is great ;-) Thank you also to www.kyudensangyo.co.jp/ for organi...
JAPANESE KEIRIN! KOKURA STADIUM VISIT in FUKUOKA
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Though it's been an Olympic sport since 2000, Keirin racing (literally meaning 'bicycle racing') remains a rather mystical discipline in the cycling world. The very first Keirin event was held on November 20th, 1948, and I was invited as part of an entourage from the Taiwan Cyclist Federation (for whom I consult as marketing director of the well known Taiwan KOM Challenge), to head over to Fuku...

129KM CYCLING from CHIANGMAI to PAI, THAILAND!
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
#gravelcycling #cycling #chiangmai 5 hrs and 51 minutes it too me to haul my very heavy gravel bike loaded with bike bags on the paved road from Chiangmai to Pai, the isolated and very lovely small town up in the north west of Thailand. The route is almost entirely flat until the last 50km, and after that there's a whole bunch of climbing to be done! Join me for the journey, as I huff and puff ...
CYCLING IN PAI, THAILAND / DOWNHILL GRAVEL RIDE

#gravelcycling #gravelride #pai Gravel cycling in Pai, northern Thailand, is AMAZING! I came to Thailand for three months intending to stay in Chiang Mai, but then after cycling up to Pai intending to stay for three days, I loved it so much that I've decided to base myself here. The town is lovely, the food great, and the people are fantastic, BUT the real draw is the seemingly endless array of...

AN INTRODUCTION TO GRAVEL CYCLING IN CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

#gravelcycling #gravelcyclingthailand #cyclingchiangmai I took my new gravel bike out to Chiang Mai, Thailand, for 4 weeks not having any real idea what to expect and though I spent most of my time on the roads, when I did venture onto the trails, I discovered beautiful tracks to ride on. How To Cycle Up Thailand's Doi Inthanon & Survive!
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.2 года назад
#cyclingthailand Some people rate Doi Inthanon as the hardest climb in the world. Rising 2565m over just 39km, this mountain is Thailand's highest point. Personally I didn't like this climb at all! I suffered something rotten with the altitude and my 12.5kg gravel bike, and found that the lack of almost any beautiful views and the car park at the summit meant that cycling up here was memorable ...

I travelled to Chiangmai in Thailand for 4 weeks and took my bicycle with me, riding almost every day in and around this beautiful city. Yep.
@@crankpunkrides5434 What is the frame material, Chromoly, Hi-ten or Alloy
Maybe check their website?
Price is inconsequential relative to quality. I purchased a retail $380. Dollar pair of shoes for $45. On sale. Marketing fools you to believe the contrary.
Soo, is it safe to park the bicycle around the temples visit and places to eat?
Yeah but always take a lock and eat at places where you can keep an eye on the bike, same anywhere you go ;-)
Is Lycra a requirement?
Fantastic video, really enjoyed it. Thank you. It's interesting to note the subtle differences between this discipline in Japan vs. how it's ridden in the rest of the world and the olympics too. For example, I believe Japanese Keirin riders have to say beforehand what their strategy for the upcoming race will be and this information is made available to the gamblers ahead of time so that they bet based off of that. There's also a lot more physical contact allowed too (hence the super padding bodybuilder-esque outfits under the bigger jerseys). It's really cool to me how it goes back to the 40's in Japan and how many of the master frame builders from Japan actually spent time in Europe to learn how to refine the classic track framebuilding skills to such a high level from old hands there. The fact that they allowed technological time to 'stand-still' and insist on all steel frames, cup and cone high flange hubs, tubular glued on tyres with toe clips and straps etc was obviously a decision based on total parity of equipment to make gambling fairer but it also affords vintage track bike nerds the opportunity to observe a little of the golden heyday of track cycling nostaglia.
I loooooove Chiang Mai
i dont know why but these tiny bikes make me so happy
Hey man love your review! How is your shoes now? I just start cycling, do you still recommend this comparing to cheapest Shimano?
I'd go with Shimano, better materials ;-)
🌲Man, I don’t know how you did it. You’re just a better seasoned biker I suppose. I just biked to Chaing Dan from Hang Dong (CM) and it was brutal. Gassed out, HEAT and ended w/ painful cramps. Not nearly as tough as your ride.
Hello, After 3 years of the review how is going this shoes? I just find the exact same model in Aliexpress. Thanks!

Hey please are you able to place the road bike cleats without any Problem?
yes no problem
Have a 20inch cheap second hand foldable. Love the riding position. Interested in the Giant Idiom but no longer sold new in Taiwan. Gonna go check these out tomorrow at the Taipei Cycling expo
I'll be there Saturday at the Bicycle Club booth, 4th floor entrance, come say hi if you're around ;-)
Nice video! Do they allow you to cycle downhill now? I heard in the news before that they banned downhill cycling in Doi Inthanon
Did you find the supermarket?…LOL…GREAT video and what a ADVENTURE you both had.
Thanks, and... nope!
I knew how tought over there because last month I joy Inthanon chalenge15. Thank guy.
Terrific video. 👏
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed it!
Is there any jobs involve in cycling in Thailand?
Yes, all that, but, hhhm, seems you left something pretty major out, some of us ride because we have someplace to go, like maybe the grocery store, the library, or to visit a friend.
I'll assume for the sake of it that this is an attempt at humour... if so, try again! ;-)
This was one of the best videos I have seen about the subject 'Why We Ride' or the love of cycling”. I've got to save and share it many times, especially with non-biker friends.
Thank you! Really appreciate your comment, glad you liked it! Crank on!

OMG! Stunning bikes!
Love it! Just landed in Chiang Mai, and this is making me so eager to rent a bike!
At 6'4" I wanted a large frame minivelo. I also wanted to ride buses and trains. Friend in Maine helped design a paratrooper with 20" wheels.
what brand helmet?
This one: ruclips.net/video/aa2hrSWjhmQ/видео.html
I did that ride once with a 34-26 and was dying and then came back with a 34-34 and had a pretty good time :)
Good video. Neat bike. Cool video. Good production values - especially the audio. Well done
Hey Lee - I know you from working with 720armour for many years. Loved watching this and seeing all the roads and terrain that I am so familiar with, having lived in Taiwan for most of my adult life. I literally recognize every single scene in this video, and it brings back some great memories. Major props for getting through the 30-day challenge. There's something to be said for consistency, with which the good days usually outnumber the bad.
Hey thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed it! I know Taroko is beautifiul, but Taipei and Yamgmingshan, that's cycling heaven ;-) Hope to see you out on the road sometime!
Are these shoes 'true' when it comes to sizes i.e. 44 = UK9? etc..etc..
Yeh they fit pretty well to my size, I'm a nine in the UK, 44 was fine.
There is nothing like it, he says. However, the Moulton variants, Bike Friday, the Pacific Reach, and now the Vello bike are all similar in many ways. And they all fold or separate!
Thanks for your comment Robert, I'll have to see if I can get one of those for a test ;-)
Great video ! :) I have plan to visit Chiang Mai in this year. So, I looking for any rentals gravel bike. Do you know that is it available?

@@crankpunkrides5434 ok when i get to Taiwan, i'm ordering a custom bike first to learn to ride; i live in a small coastal town in Oz and arranged my entire career around surfing; watching/listening to your day 14/100km a day makes me realise you will give me a good insight with your parallels so i'm definitely up for a day of coaching before I do the big loop and check all the waves ... as such I will be in contact
Such a great video and explanation - Love it Lee 🤟 - Thank you so much for sharing. I am looking forward to visit you with my Gravelbike... ;-)
Thank you Mao!
great vedeo, where did you rent the bike?i will be to Chiang Mai in 4 days
Brought it with me from Taiwan where I live. Not sure you can rent a bike in CNX to ride this kind of trail. Mostly fairly basic level MTBs from what I saw.
Nice one. I’ve visited some of the same temples. Makes me long to return there
Get over here!
Don't you afraid of the attacking of dogs from village houses? I am very anxious when riding alone in villages...
No, the dogs in Taiwan are much more aggressive than here! The best way to get the dogs to stop chasing you is to spray water from your bidon at them, that does the trick ;-)
@@crankpunkrides5434 Wow! Interesting!
Great video - thank you so much 😊 Looks beautiful. I mainly road bike in UK but also gravel bike. I’m planning a road biking trip to Chiangmai In August but this has got me thinking… looks truly amazing / tranquil but do you think those beautiful tracks might be a bit too muddy in August and if so Chiangmai on the mountain roads better?
Thanks Tommy ;-) Road cycling in CM is fun, I have a couple of videos on my channel showing the road and gravel riding there. I was there in July-August and it did rain a bit but generally I found the trails quite dry, a little moister than in Pai but still not too bad. I am not sure what these will be like in Pai in August!
Fantastic!
Well done Lee
Thanks man!
Love these videos
Thanks Domo ;-)
How are the dogs there? I've heard a lot of people say they're a big problem in Thailand.
So far only been chased once despite encountering a fair few digs in the hills, and the one that did, his heart wasn't really in it ;-) The dogs are chill here... maybe it's the weed?! 🐶
