I'm an aspiring filmmaker, attending the Cinematic Arts program at the Colorado Film School. I want to seek out the people, places, and stories in the world that connect us to ancient wisdom and culture, that give us an anchor to something timeless in this ever changing modern world. I'm interested in the beauty of nature, the words of our elders, and the archetypal stories that remind of us our shared human experience.
First Flatiron Free Solo - A Short Film
The First Flatiron towers over Boulder, Colorado. A 1,200 foot angled block of sandstone, the First is home to one of the most well-known free solo routes in the country - the Direct Route (5.6), a mega classic.
Come along on this cinematic, meditative journey as I free solo this beautiful route.

Hiking the GR5 - Vosges Mountains and Alsace, France - Dad and Kids
Просмотров 19621 день назад
It's our third year walking the European long-distance hiking trail, the GR5. This year, we're in eastern France, picking up where we left off near Nancy, and walking 100 miles across the remote countryside and across the wild and beautiful Vosges Mountains, ending near Strasbourg. I upgraded my film equipment this year and am excited to uplevel the quality of the film to better capture the vib...

Ep. 5 - Colorado Cabin Build - Building the Floor, Elk Herd, Project Pause
Просмотров 12 тыс.9 месяцев назад
In this episode, snow has come to the Colorado Rockies and transformed the environment. I'm making good progress on building the floor, but unfortunately have run into an unexpected situation that forces me to pause the project. I'm building the floor using 2x10 joists spaced 24 inches apart. I attach the joists to rim joists and then insert blockers to prevent twisting of the joists. After the...
Ep. 4 - Colorado Cabin Build - Beams, Wild Turkeys, Winter is Coming
Просмотров 33 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In this episode, I get all the 4x10 pressure treated beams up, positioned, and fastened together and to the straps embedded in the concrete piers. The beams are super dense and heavy - it's a real workout to maneuver them into position. To get the beams cinched up tight, I use ratchet straps (with the help of a friend) wrapped around opposing beams, then nail in the metal corner ties to secure ...
Ep. 3 - Colorado Cabin Build - Concrete, 32-Hour Road Trip to Get Beams
Просмотров 9 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In this episode, I fill in all the trenches with dirt and remove the pier braces and batter boards. Concrete is poured into the piers and footings to prepare for beams which will support the entire cabin structure. I place straps in all the perimeter piers which will secure the structure to the piers. I can't find any of the beams I need anywhere within 1200 miles, so I take a 32 hour road trip...
Ep. 2 - Colorado Cabin Build - Fall Colors, Foundation Work, Firepit
Просмотров 21 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In this episode, fall colors are in full effect here in the mountains. Excavation is complete and now I'm building out the 15 piers and footings upon which the cabin will rest. I use a laser level to get my strings level, and prepare the footing forms and tubes that will make up the foundation. I also build rebar cages to go inside the piers. I get around to building a firepit and enjoy my firs...
Ep. 1 - Colorado Cabin Build - First Visit, Excavation, Site Prep
Просмотров 9 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This is the first episode in a series documenting my journey building a cabin on my land in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, by myself and with no prior experience. In this episode, I introduce the land and cabin site, lay out batter boards and strings marking where the foundation will be put in, and do the excavation work to prepare for concrete piers. I hit a ton of rock (they don't call them th...
Hiking the Kerry Way, Ireland - Dad and Kids - Killarney to Caherdaniel
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
My sons and I spent five days hiking about 50 miles of the Kerry Way, from near its start in Killarney to the seaside village of Caherdaniel. The Kerry Way is Ireland's most famous long-distance trail, a 133 mile long loop around the Iveragh Peninsula in far southwest Ireland. This was my younger son's first introduction to long-distance hiking (my older son has logged over 500 miles on long-di...

Still waiting on that return on your cabin build.
Unfortunately still on hold, trying to work things out
@ryel-kestano my husband and I just found your cabin build series and were looking forward to following your progress. Would you be willing to share what happened to bring it to an abrupt end? Thanks and take care!
@@LauraMichellez sure, I ran into permitting complications and it's taking a long time to resolve
@ryel-kestano My husband said that was likely it. We are going to start our build journey soon in Colorado.
Beautiful video.

Great job filming the hike, amazing landscapes!
Hello there , such a beautiful hiking trail....I noticed boys are walking fully into the water with their light shoes ? Not to wet inside after ? Greetings from France .
Good job guys and good luck for the next parts of the GR5 😀
You're sharing an interesting story in that movie. I hope you're going to finish GR5 together 💪🏻 Best of luck to you!
Hi Ryel I miss your Videos ! When you come back? Can't wait to see the next video from the astonishing building ! From Switzerland Daniel
Hey there, still subscribed and waiting for your next episode
looks like he is not going to finish the house
Can't wait for the return of the cabin build videos
Looks awesome, hopefully you will pick this up again
Wow that's a long way to drive
Hopefully you pick this up in the coming summer
Re-watching this again, this ended way too soon
great video!! I would recommend getting the boys' feet checked because they seem to have flat feet. As someone with this issue who hikes a lot now, i wish my parents did something about it when I was a kid, would have saved me a lot of knee and back problems.
We have a responsibility to get our boys out there! I love this it’s so inspiring. If we want to help our environment and look after ourselves, we must expose our young to nature. Thank you for the video 💪
That is a nice part of Colorado. What area are you located in? Looks like southern CO.
when is elk hunting season?
♥️😇💟⭐❤️💝💙💖❣️
Did you advertise you haul to destinations on your route?
check the location of the sun's angle to benefit solar panel installation on the roof or on its own rack.
Genial 👍🤩👌

Great work very excited to see completing your project .. greeting from Kuwait
One note here, put rocks over the tarp all along the sides to prevent the wind from uplifting it
Stay warm n safe….greetings from down under Australia…🎉
That is going to be one nice cabin 😊. That was one nice elk 🫎 herd.
That's too bad. Hope you get things worked out. See ya when you get back.
We live in Highlands Ranch, and we’re always looking for land to do this ourselves. Your videos are encouraging and filmed/edited really well. I’m starting from ep 1, and subscribed! Great job!
Thank you! Hope you find some land, it's pretty life changing to get out of the city
Great job, so far. Hope everything works out ok for you and we will be here when you get back.
Thank you
Enjoying this channel take care see you when you get back
Take care we will be here when you get back!!! Hope everything works out OK be safe
Like you. I have always built things just as strong as I can and money will allow. I love seeing things that Inbuilt forty or fifty years ago and please to see that there isn’t any sag, leaks or movement of any kind. I will be keeping my eye out for you just to see the rest of the build. Good luck, God Bless you. May all your troubles be little ones. Later
Thanks so much!
That open looked a lot like NCAR and the Flatirons...if so, hopefully the delay is "just" permitting. Can't wait to see you continue.
Thank you, much appreciated!
One day you will be done good job
🇧🇾 🙋
I’ll be waiting for the return of your videos. Best of luck!
Great work. For future reference stagger your blocks between joists to be able to nail each side. Makes it easier. Can't wait for next video.
It doesn't look as nice, but then again you're not going to see them anyway right
Just curious, do you have a well and septic in place? Most Counties require that before you can start building, you might not get a certificate of occupancy.
Greetings from Switzerland ! I ts allways a pleasure to see how you working on your Cabin. Have a good one Daniel
Hop to see you soon,al the best.
You're doing such an awesome job sometimes those hiccups come especially if it's in dealing with permits and land property I don't know just guessing hopefully everything will work out for you blessings to you be glad to see you in another 3 months take care 😊👍🙏

Great design on the foundation. On your pause from the project. It's all part of the journey. Be grateful everyday you are here. Take care and hope everything works out.
So grateful! Thanks, it will work out for sure
You’ve done one heck of a job on the foundation, joists and the rims, solid as heck. Those pesky life responsibilities sometimes have the absolute worst timing! Take care!
Indeed :) Thank you, I'll be back soon
