    For hunters who thought about hunting the big woods but nervous especially hunting alone. What are some thoughts and advice that you can share when it comes to hunting where there are wild predators such as bears, wolves, and mountain lion? What should I be cautious about, and effective ways on how would I deal with them if I have close encounters with them?

    • @gfalk3972

      Carry bear spray.

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman 2 дня назад

      I don't want to tell anyone what to do in this situation - not my area of expertise. I will say that I would only go places you feel comfortable and only use protection as you feel comfortable. Bear spray, side arm, knife, etc. During rifle season I wouldn't worry too much but I can understand why bow hunting is a different story. Did you hear about the bow hunter from Buffalo count, WI? The one who I believe shot a mountain lion for self defense. Crazy stuff happens.

    • @splurtagious
      @splurtagious 2 дня назад

      Predators are often times more afraid of you than you are of them. Unless they are starving. You most likely will never encounter one. I’ve hunted the same area for 30 years with a known wolf pack and I’ve never seen one in the wild. Only on game cams.

    • @outdoorhabits
      @outdoorhabits 2 дня назад

      @@RelentlessSportsman Ok. I may tend to think of worse case scenarios like being attack by giant black bear, or a pack of wolves who pattern you in the big woods and what to know what you should know what to do or understand the animals a bit more to stay safe

      I am glad you asked this question as I am curious what other bow hunters do as well. I hunt the UP alone and have had wolves around me and also came up to one as I rounded a corner in dark. It backed away but my adrenaline rush was intense after I settled in stand. My buddy did have a bear pursue him so I’m thinking bear spray. Don’t really want a hand gun etc.

    I seem to be in the deer, at least as much as you can up north. There are a lot of empty places too. My big issue seems to be entrance/exit and where to setup to see or get a shot opportunity (I bow hunt off the ground using natural cover). Late season I see nothing, even though there's sign all around me. I've been trying to get closer to bedding since they don't seem to be moving much in daylight now, but I think I've been getting too close lol. Where I live it's a clay plain with steep, deeply eroded river valleys and boreal forest with some mixed hardwoods. Even the creeks can be in 100 foot deep valleys. There are usually deer trails along the top edges of the valleys and also partway down. The does are bedding in the big river valleys, not sure if the bucks are also. But the wind in those valleys swirls and is terrible to hunt. Then south of here it's more of a pothole landscape with oak and pine. Always out there trying to learn! But I do struggle to see deer up north, if I see five on public all season I'm doing well. Trying to get one in bow range is even harder and I haven't been able to get doe tags for public up here, so I feel like taking a buck with my bow is almost an impossible task. Gun hunting is much easier because I can still hunt or track in areas with good sign. You're right on the swamp edges, when I get down farther south in the pothole landscape I've been finding good sign around the edges of black spruce bogs. But I think my entrance and setup as far as scent and noise isn't where it needs to be yet. These deer don't seem to tolerate any human presence. I refuse to bait even though it's legal here, that's just lazy hunting to me. I would rather learn to be a better hunter. Thanks for the videos!

Moved here from MN in 2023 and there's so much scouting and exploring I want to do. Barely scratched the surface so far even though I spend a ton of time in the woods. @@RelentlessSportsman I'm sad that I missed the old days when deer numbers were better up north. They were already falling when I learned to hunt in northern MN. But at least I learned to hunt difficult conditions and still get excited just seeing some does! I try to have realistic expectations and am happy with smaller bucks, but it sure would be fun to bag a mature one. Plus getting out in these big areas of public in the northwoods is really fun. I'm sure you're familiar with it if you learned to hunt near the UP. We need some wolf management for sure.

      I select cut my hardwood about 5 years ago. Native grasses, raspberries and other weeds have filled in what was pretty barren ground. I've tried planting seedlings before, but the deer browsed them off. This year I'm buying mature conifers (5 -6') and planting throughout the timber. (40 - 60 trees). I found a wholesale farm for those. I'm also tilling parts of the timber to get the seed bank to help populate under brush, but since I don't want to wait for another t years, I'm planting switch grass as well. The south 3rd of my property has been growing thicker on its own with pines, oak saplings, autumn olive, etc. And you can already see that does are spending more time on my land rather than just passing through. I've got 3 clover foodplots that suffered through a dry summer, so tending to them will be key. I will hit them with potassium and let them grow, then kill the grasses and weeds with a selective herbicide that won't harm the clover in June.

    I’d never tell myself that all those rubs came from one buck. The ones in the same direction, maybe ! The ones that loop all around from other directions I would definitely think it’s more than one buck in there. Nevertheless it’s a prime area to set up 👍

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman 10 дней назад

      It is definitely possible that it could be multiple bucks. My experience tells me otherwise. There are multiple areas I hunt where there is one dominant buck that does the majority of the rubbing. In those areas, the dominant buck has his rut loops. The smaller rubs are from subordinate bucks. Again, this is what I've learned from my experience, where I have scouted and hunted.

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman 11 дней назад

      Thank you for supporting the channel. Depending on the public land, I have 4 methods. 1. Utility cart - same cart I use for hauling firewood across my yard, etc. This is used when public access/logging roads take me waaay back. 2. Otter sled - makes dragging 10x easier, even when there is no snow. It helps keep the feet and antlers from catching on things. I've also used an otter sled to bring deer across small rivers/creeks. They will float if you balance it properly. 3. ATV - my four wheeler will get used if the public allows for ATV access. Which most of the public around me does not. Northern WI usually allows for it so when I rarely go up there to hunt, I would use that. I've also pulled deer out with my 4 wheeler, with the deer in the otter sled. That's really the best combo. 4. Boat/canoe - crossing bigger rivers. There is one good location across a large river that a boat or good size canoe is necessary. Biggest thing I've learned is after I shoot a deer, I find it, mark it on OnX and then bring all my other gear back to my vehicle. Then I come back with the sled, cart or whatever. I definitely do not drag out the deer with my stand and bow or gun - too much weight for me. I hope this has been helpful.

      Sometimes it's multiple sometimes just 1, heavy cutting buck. Use trail cams to confirm and pattern him. I hunt NC military installations and can't use cams so I walk the look until I jump him unfortunately. I'll find my stand location and come back a week later when he returns. But after you find the loop then set up the cams to find out his pattern.

    I appreciate how your content is simple, effective, and low budget. I think people get way too caught up in complex strategies and crazy expensive gear when really it dosent take that much to kill good deer. I ground hunt 90% of the time and I prefer to let my tracking/scouting determine where I hunt and not sit over trail cameras and corn piles, to me that’s not hunting. All the stuff u said I have found to be true in my experience as well. The only thing I will say tho is I hunt some public land in south central Kentucky and hunters are relentless, idc if you swim across to a remote island to hunt there is gonna be at least a few hunters there. Great content tho buddy keep up the good work.

I agree that the ver edited, produced and scripted content takes the ‘realness’ out of it. You mentioned all the pressure and people willing to go anywhere and everywhere in Kentucky. Luckily that hasn’t caught on here in WI yet. Some places, like SE Wisconsin that can happen. Less public land and more people. By me, most hunters won’t cross tiny creeks even.

      @@RelentlessSportsman Yes, of course! I had a website up for around 10 years where a person could search the scriptures for specifically the King James Version, the Tyndale Version (New Testament), and the Wycliffe Bible. It's constantly on my mind to get back to it. It was written in an older scripting technology. The fellow who had hosted it actually passed away, and I hadn't gotten back to putting it online again. Finding a host that supports the technology is what I have to find. For the handle "desiregoodministry", my oldest son decided to make a Google email for me. He decided on his own arbitrarily for that handle. I use it here on RUclips as you see. I don't have a 501(c)(3) or anything official. Like you, I am on my own with what I do. It is a hobby at the time. I love to write. However, I am older and want good health too, which includes hunting and gardening as well as knowing about health, which is why yours are some of the channels I follow. :) As far as profession of faith, I am a believer in Jesus Christ. As far as Desire Good. It can be pretty simple to understand. Desire is an action, which can be akin to hunting deer, for example. Through desire, a person can go to the end of himself to try to understand the hunt. A person can feel the longing to hunt, the sense of loss in it, the sense of regret, the sense of hope, the sense of query, the sense of mystery, the propelling notion that causes him to push, and push, and push until he finds what he hopes to finds - exploring, discovering, scouting, planning, etc. It is definitely a choice as well as a feeling to desire. Good is a result but not just any result. Jesus, himself said no one is good except God in heaven, so the good He spoke of was not one of a quality as in bet (good), better, best. Actually, the word "good" means "to gather", which means that only God, the Father, knows his own desire in how to gather how He wants to gather. If that be so, then "evil" means to "ungather". When looking through the scriptures of the Bible, the Father gathers and ungathers. He does good, and He does evil. He allows the rain to fall on the righteous and the unrighteous. But to be mindful of how a person literally moves in intent, in spirit, in will, and in choice - to realize that through the powerful choice of a person's will, the torque of it, a person moves supernaturally (behind the scenes of the physical in a way that the physical senses might not perceive). "In him we live and move and have our being" as the scriptures state. We may not see our will in action in the physical, but our will in action in the spiritual is the basis of desire. A person could be paralyzed physically and still move the spiritual world greatly by choice of will alone. That coupled with choosing the Father's plan of what He wants gathered is exactly the position He desires of us to be, to work, and to remain ... to long to choose to do His plan when and where ever he needs us. web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/desiregood.com
