Getting back to my teaching roots by passing along what I have learned in my journey to improve my Pickleball game
Can we beat the lobsters? Game 5 of My first 4.0 pickleball tournament
My pickleball partner Drew and I played the 4.0 division (50 and over) of The Lake Geneva Spring Break Battle Round Robin. We medaled in both the 3.5 all ages tournaments we played in last year so decided to move to up and see how we would do. This is game 5 from that tournament with my analysis, what I learned, and our team statistics from the game. See how it goes when we attempt to beat a team that likes to lob.

This is episode 1 in "The Breakdown" series. The breakdown uses actual game play and does analysis on it. Episode 1 goes through the steps of any doubles pickleball shot. Goes through the anatomy of a pickleball shot.
Wow, a couple of bangers, not much skill displayed!
Curious why you both players don't switch sides after a point is scored? Also I have mobility issues so I can't ever play single but I can cover about 90% of half court. Been having fun playing my half vs an able bodied person play full court on the other side.
You stay on the odd or even side based on your score to make it easier to figure the score and mix up the angles so that both positions on each side potentially serve to both positions on the other side. In doubles pickleball you never serve straight on but I think that is an interesting lack of angles to have to navigate which works on your straight on attacks. This game is great for people with mobility issues and I applaud you for getting out there and having fun which is what the game is all about.
4.0 ? No top spin, no flicks at the kitchen. I could go on! I question your claim to 4.0!
I agree that the worst game I have ever played is not at the 4.0 level. We are in the the 4.0 bracket at the tournament so by definition are 4.0.
I really like the presentation style Coach Bill - well done and good luck with the channel.
Thanks for watching and taking time out for a nice comment.
I like the dry humor infused with the match commentary.👏
Thanks for watching and commenting. I am glad you get it. My humor is Sahara like
4.0???
Yes, anyone can say they are whatever level they want to. It does not get any more 4.0 than to get into 4.0 tournament. If you go undefeated, then you can probably move up to the next level. If you don't win any games, then you signed up for a higher level than you are and should go down next time
As you mentioned, court spacing is a problem. You are planting in the middle of the court rather than shading the ball leaving the back side open constantly.
So many pop ups. Frustrating to watch but I get it. I am guilty myself. Gotta cover down the line. A lob every now and then on a deep return can work nicely.
Thanks for watching. Yes frustrating for us also because we are usually much better and keeping the ball safe. Just gripping a little tighter due to lack of tournament experience is enough to cause a bunch of popups. If you like the third shot lob then you will like the team we play in game 5
Cool videos guys. I will say I did think a couple of those balls were in, however I won't harp on that too much. We're all human. I guarantee you've missed line calls, I've missed line calls, everyone who plays pickleball has missed line calls, it happens. But I like the analysis, and that you were willing to put a game on RUclips when you were not playing your best. It happens, keep on pickling! Games in which we do not play particularly well are the ones we can learn the most from.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yeah, we are definitely both human. I learned a lot from this tournament and some things I did not pick up until watching the video back.
Much enjoyed your comments and video. Boy, does Drew have good hands at the net. You're not shabby either.
Thanks for watching and taking the time for a nice comment. We do a lot of drilling hands and can usually hold our own pretty well.
I thought you guys played well. They got on that streak at the end ran off those last points really fast. Not surprised they won the tournament. The 4.7 was dominant, he didn't miss much. Thanks for posting 👍🏻
Thanks for watching and commenting. We did a poor job of keeping the ball away from him and his partner hardly got any balls
Level of play by both teams was 3.5 at best but still good info by you coach Bill.
I agree with that assessment. The team we played was not close to winning any other games in the tournament and I played very poorly. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Love the premise told with a sad Eeyore sounding voice. When I play bad, I get Pickled. You were competitive in spite of that. Make less than half as many unforced errors, and you win the match. My experience is the competence trajectory from 3.5 to 4.0 is steeper than it looks and my record of losing to 4.0's reflects it,
That sad voice is my normal voice even though I am generally a happy person :) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I am always seeking to play against better competition to help me learn and grow
I'm surprised you didn't run into more shake and bake at a 4.0 tourney. We see it around here at the 3.5 level sometimes but 4.0 all the time. Probably because we have a lot of strong tennis players transitioning over. Shake and bake defense it mostly about keeping the 4th shot block low and/or away from the baker (ideally both). Low is the most important part. Mostly just need to make sure you're contacting 4th block in front of you. If your hitting your 4th against the drive behind you it's probably going high....on a couple of those drew looked like he was swinging against the drive instead of just blocking it back.
Thanks for the comment and advice. We started seeing it when we played the teams that medeled. It was the one guy that did all the damage against us even though we tried to keep it away from him
A great learning experience. 🎉
Yes. That also sums up life
Yes it was!
Good feedback/narrative. Doesn't sound as though you counted the early shots you chose not to go after as unforced errors. I believe they are, as they should have been put away. Always best to be analytical about one's play and you did a good job!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to reply. I did count the leave that ended up going in as error #2. I do believe that a bad leave is an unforced error
That block return of Drew’s smash at 1:21 wasn’t out. You’re both watching it drop into the baseline!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Stay tuned to the rest of the games in this tournament to see if you think we missed any more calls
This is such a great drill! Much appreciated 🙌🏽
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Grab a partner and give skinny singles a try.
I wish that was my worst game at a 4.0
Thanks for watching and taking time out to comment. Drilling is my number 1 game improvement tool and I have several videos for ideas on how to do that.
4.0 don’t think so 2.5😊
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. This was an actual tournament and the level was actually 4.0. Sounds like you would have won gold if you were in it. You should sign up next time.
Always a clown that doesn’t have the stones to post their own videos that chimes in with a good trolling. Keep putting it out there coach!
Love it!
Thanks. Stay tuned for more...
Well done, thanks coach!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I wish I could play this good! Love your analysis.
Thanks for watching and the nice comment. I believe the fastest way to improve is to drill and I have a bunch of video on that subject.
Worst game? Pffff....thats my play every day! Hehe 11-9 isnt a blow out. Dont be so hard on yourself.
Thanks for the kind words and watching
Great stuff! In the stats at the end, what does "GS" stand for (e.g., "forehand GS")?
Very good question. I have always been against the use of acronyms and initialisms for the reason that the audience needs to know what they stand for but yet here I am using one. In this case GS was short for GroundStroke which is more of a tennis term anyway. I am changing it to the full word "drive" going forward which fits nicely both in size and description. Thanks for watching and helping to improve the channel. I am not using AI to analyze and do it the old fashioned why by watching and making judgement calls on each one. I think the stats can help to quickly see what went well and what needs work.
My guy said the other angel says that it's out. LOL, These boys cheated their way to a victory
Thanks for watching and taking your time out to comment
I didn't think you played that bad at all. Some of the unforced errors, to me you looked late to get to a ready position. Your videos and analysis keep improving with every video 👍🏻
Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for more tournament action
The volley (from an opponent's drive) you missed at 9:00 I would probably call a forced error, it was hit very low and hard just over the net and not an easy one to handle.
Thanks. Forced versus unforced is subjective and I really debated that one. I ended up going with unforced because I uncharacteristically mishit it so badly (almost whiffed) and have so much time when the opponent is at the baseline line which is probably not a a great argument. If would not have been the worst game I have ever played if the other 7 were that debatable.
Way to put it out there brother. I don't know of many coaches willing to use their own mistakes as teachable moments and I love it. Your partner needs to lighten up a bit :) Where are your bad line calls!?!?!?!?
Thanks. It is a lot easier to critique other people than to do it to yourself.
Honestly it wasn’t that bad of a game!
Thanks for the positive comment and watching.
Hi Coach , I appreciate your growth mindset and found your analysis helpful! Thank you for taking the time to record edit and post.
Thanks for the watching and taking time for some kind words. Unfortunately, I had a lot of bad stuff to analyze in this one and hopefully it will be more of do what I do instead of do what I say in the future
Ouch. This hurts to watch, but I appreciate the teaching moments and your explanations of what went wrong. Nice approach to coaching!
Thanks for watching. Hoping to get the next game out so you can see if things get better
100% playing with lower rank players over a ling period of time gets you to become less dialed in when playing someone higher or same level. Happened to me when recovering g from an injury.
Thanks for watching and validating
I think I’ve been ranking myself too low
I don't think this game was a great representation of any of the players top potential. Stay tuned for more games to see if it gets better or worse.
Bill, you are lifting the ball in your serve…..
Thanks for the comment. I am continuously looking to improve my game. I am not sure what you mean by "lifting the ball in your serve". Can you elaborate?
Bill, I think that the inference here is that you have a slight lift of the ball as you are tossing for the serve. Very subtle. Hard to tell at normal speed. Try slow motioning this? Anyways, kind of a nit if that's the reference
Good analysis.
Thanks for the watching and the feedback
great game, thanks for uploading the game. You started to cover the line more from the guy in the green T, he had a nice agressive cut cross court or down the line shot. good win!!!
Thanks for watching and the feedback
More games please!
Thanks for watching. I will see what I can do. Stay tuned
I've had the same problem with getting used to having to crowd the middle due to a partner getting targeted.
Glad someone else feels my pain. I hope this is reminder to you to not do it for an entire tournament and figure out when watching the video later
@@CoachBillPickleball Looks like your partner had maybe 3 touches more than you over the course of the entire game. Pretty sure that's not targeting. I think your point though, was that you played lower level games previously where you picked up the bad habit. You really put your partner in a bad spot when you crowd the middle and force them off angle.
Yes, my point was that I did not realize that I was out of position until watching the video. That is something that I need to correct. My partner was not getting targeted, I was just used to not getting the ball in lower level games and trying to insert myself
Some one pops up the ball a lot
If you are referring to me then I would agree with you. The crazy part is that I missed as many transition drops in this one game as I had about the whole winter playing rec. It is usually a good shot for me but I did not have it dialed in on this game and was long on almost all of them
@@CoachBillPickleball I beat my 19 yr old grandson on a regular basis, but when he has his game dialed in, he is hard to beat. That is when I put all of my serves and shots to his backhand side where I know he needs the most work. I know my dominance won't last more than a few more months, but at my age,(63), it sure feels good to beat a young buck.
@canucanoe2861 Good move going to the backhand because 95% of players have a better forehand. If you control the ball better than the young buck than you keep winning. Keep getting out there and playing.
Good game!
Thanks and Thanks for watching
I would like to see more games , please.
Thanks for watching. I plan to start on game 2 soon. Please stay tuned
01:21 that ball was clearly in. Actually hit inside the line. And you are staring 1 foot away both of you at it. Can you stop the rampant cheating in this sport? If you tried this in tennis we would cook you for it. I don't have to cheat to win, but the fact both of you were on top of the ball 1 foot away and you both cheated is so sad.
Ball was in easy. 7:52 the guy calls another one out that was in.
I agree that the video looks like the ball was in. I did the opposite of dodging that fact by replaying, zooming in, and putting it in slow motion like they do for a video replay in the PPA. I have watched pretty much every PPA tournament for the last year and have seen a lot of video challenges. I think this one was close enough that should have been video challenged by them if that was a thing in this tournament. I can also tell you that the PPA has multiple angles which we did not. I have a seen a lot of challenges that look in from this angle and the camera from the other side of the court confirms that they are indeed out. I can only say that we are never trying to hook anyone and can only call them as we see them.
@@gavshep71 Yeah, you guys gotta stop cheating. It means nothing to win games if they are all won on cheat calls.
@@CoachBillPickleball There's 2 of you and both of you are literally looking down on the ball at your feet 1 foot away from the ball, so there's no excuse that it was far and you didn't see it. If that was me, I would throw up the "in" call. No matter how much i hate the result, I never hook my opponents. I come from tennis background and there's a code of conduct that pickleball players seem to have zero respect for.
@@gavshep71 This was even more inside the court. This is bad calling. This sport is just full of rampant cheating. I never cheat my opponents. It's better to have a fair scoreline than to win and not know if you really won. This is what children do. I don't know why adults cheat to win.
Let’s see game 2…
Thanks for watching. I hope to start working on game 2 soon
Are points scored regardless of who serves? This looks like a fun game. Thanks for showing it.
Yes, in rally scoring you a point if awarded for each rally regardless of who serves. Thanks for watching and hope you get out and play
I'm impressed!
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment
What is the purpose of wearing 2 gloves? Cold weather? Thanks GOD, Guns & Gumbo
Yep! Coach Bill drags me out in the cold so I stole my daughter’s stretchy gloves. Can’t feel the ball but it makes Coach look better when he wins 😉
@@ajcheris4603 If I remember correctly, it was about 50 degrees and windy that day. Nothing beats a drilling partner that will brave the cold to help you improve your game
This looks like forehand singles.😂

Any tips for practicing solo?
Wall drills can be good for hand eye coordination and even help with hand speed. Ball and paddle drills with no walls can also be good for hand eye and improving your ability to manipulate the paddle. There are some good videos on other RUclips channels that cover these topics. Thanks for watching
It is helpful to see the games being played. Thanks!
