This channel shows many of my hobbies and products I have built to make these hobbies even better. I'm excited to share these ideas with you!
I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, and I like to apply my engineering skills in my everyday life to build things that I either can't buy, or that I believe I can make cheaper or better.
I live in Minnesota, and have a cabin in the remote northwoods where I spend a lot of my time. Many of the items I make are for activities that take place up there.

Milwaukee Drill Battery For 12V Depth Finder (Waterproof!)
I spent many an hour pushing my Husky 288 through wood with an Alaska mill. All I can say is if I added up the cost of the saw, mill frame, and gas and oil (major gas hog), and wasted wood with that big kerf; I wood have been farther ahead buying a Wood Mizer.
Simple and effective. The one on the left (looking from our POV) is more solid. It lacks the space for a mattress, though. A couple of ideas: recessed legs and a ventilated board under the mattress
Yeah the one on the left is definitely more solid. Not sure what you mean by recessed legs? And what would the ventilated board be for? Just airflow while sleeping?
Hello, I have built a groomer similar to yours for my Nordic ski trails. I am considering adding a snow knife, but my system will likely not be adjustable. With your experience, would there be an ideal cutting depth under the groomer to fix the blade?
Hi, I would say about 1.5 inches below the bottom of the groomer. Will you be able to remove it easily or do you plan to just leave it on all the time?
@ Thank you for your expertise. I am considering creating a model on a square steel tube that will be pivoting. On one side, there would be the blade; on another, there would be bolts to loosen icy conditions; and there would also be faces without a knife nor bolts.
You seem to have a kinda 30 degree angle on the blade? Is this pitch adequate?
@@nikesava yeah that angle has been working out well for me, i have never had to change it
Thanks for the video and plans NorthWoods Engineered. Built a ski tracker using your design with a few modifications last weekend and itching to get it out to try. Thanks!
You are welcome! I hope it works out well for you.
Do you have the plans?
No I do not sorry, but you can check out the related video I have attached to this short. It shows the whole process
Great video Please post the manufacturer of trailer runners? Where can a guy order from? Thanks Dave
Thank you! There is a link to them on Amazon in the description of the video! I also found them locally at a farm and fleet store, specifically Mills Fleet Farm in Minnesota.
Very inspiring, makes you want to get out and build something, great job.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic idea!
Thank you!
why is the music so loud man, watching to see project, not to hear music
Sorry man!
Nice 😊
Thank you!
Nice design on welded unit. What diameter culvert pipe?
Thank you. I used 8” double wall
@@northwoodsengineered Looking to build one myself, but have 12" pipe. Will be very heavy (about 10-12 60# bags.)
Yeah that will get really heavy. Mine is pretty heavy and tough to roll around by hand.
This is awesome
Thank you!
Innovative! Thanks!
You are welcome!
Nice and simple. Thanks
You are welcome!
How much did it cost to build
I don’t have the exact number from when I built it, but I would guess $250
Great video! Do you have a link to the gate henges you used for the folding bed with mattress thanks
Thank you! It’s called a “gate tee hinge” from Home Depot.
I’m going for that same idea so I can use the bed with my motorcycle loaded
Great engineering, but that is a chainsaw killer…look at the dust coming off of the saw 🤔 should those be noodles type chips? I could be wrong… To much pressure to saw bar at once. I'm not badging the design… but it’s not practical. Repair shops hate those saws to repair.
Yeah it’s definitely not the best thing for a chainsaw, but I really don’t do it that often.
How much strain does towing it put on your sled? I'm building a very similar one, but scaled the width up to 56". Hoping to tow with a Polaris Indy Lite Deluxe 340. 15" track. Mostly going to be on flat open field with little elevation change, but I'm a bit worried about getting bogged down in deeper snow. Thanks!
Hey, my sled is a Indy 550 adventure long track and it pulls it really well. The only time is struggles is if the snow is a bit wetter and heavier and it piles up on top of the groomer. In dry snow, I think you will be able to pull it with the 340.
Where did you get the spare tire mount
It came with the trailer as a factory option.
@@northwoodsengineered found it. Thanks
Just don't stop inventing :)
I won’t, thanks!
I have a 225 Amp buzz box welder for you, if you're not too far away ! Genius should not be constrained !!
Thanks for the offer, that’s very generous! But I do have access to a welder when needed.
Genius!! That's all that needs to be said! Thank you for the great video.
You are welcome, thank you!
I know what I am building this weekend. Thanks "NorthWoods"
Great to hear! You are welcome
This is great idea! Thanks for inspiration.
Thanks, you are welcome!
I am making an awning for a pop up camper. How much extra length do I need to add so I am able to extend the supports? Can I make it to where I can raise the camper without opening the awning? Thank you very much for the video, very cool!!
No audio
How much would you charge me for the plans to build?
Sorry but I don’t have plans. Just the video
What are the part numbers for the tee jet spray parts?
The info for the parts is in the description of the video
Well done. Simple and straightforward!
Thank you!
Awesom design! Where did you buy the long aluminum tubing? Home Depot doesn't carry it in that length. I'm having a hard time finding the long stuff.
Thank you! I had to go to a local steel/aluminum supplier to get the longer aluminum tubes.
Awesome Video! Question... How often do you have to resharpen the chain or purchase a new one? (How many logs on average, will one chain last) We are getting into this ourselves and I love your design Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! I bought an electric chainsaw sharpener from granberg to make it easy and you can sharpen without removing the chain. I would resharpen after one or two big oak logs, but if cutting pine you can do a couple more. But there’s just a lot factors. So it’s hard to say how long a chain will last.
@northwoodsengineered Awesome! Thank you! Just wanted a GENERAL time. That works Thank you
What kind of blade do you use?
It’s a granberg milling chain
This is exactly what I want to do in my van! Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
I’ve watched a few of the maker pipe videos. They have the pieces to do this! It’s a great project! I would have to practice with the sewing machine
Super helpful!
Hey bud, I replicated this a few years ago and boy is it fantastic. I’m struggling on the box part now for the x country tracks. Would you be able to give me some detailed dimensions of that part? I see the dimensions of the cutters in your vid…
Hey shoot me an email northwoodsengineered@gmail.com and I’ll help you out.
This is an egineering masterpiece.
Thank you!
put a boat winch on it to pull the frame thru. use a rope that stretches just s bit to keep the saw tight.
Didn't know these existed let alone that I needed one...
The things you discover on the internet!
Anyone find something like this in US to buy? I found a couple of Aussie ones, but nothing this heavy duty for an ATV pull behind.
What size bar are you using?
25”
Cool👍 What about UV degradation on the hinge ? Cheers
The material I used is supposed to be pretty good against UV. I have some outside that I’m aging so that I can test and different intervals of exposure.
What about the water run off under the shower? If left as is, isn't there moisture build up under the shower?
It just soaks into the ground, we use biodegradable soap too. No different than when it rains
I like your spare tire mount. Did you put it in? How?
Thanks, yes it was with the trailer when I bought it, installed on the inside. But then I moved it to the front
I have his hinges on two large 8x4 foot gates with chicken wire. I was waiting for them to fail and they have not. I needed to run an anti-sag wire to my gate which I assume added more stress to the gate hinge when they were sagging. Also these hinges have been in direct sun hot hot summer days over 90 degrees and no issues. My only suggestion is if you could make a hinge that opens more than 90 degrees and maybe a slightly beefier option for gates that are larger. Don't hesitate to buy from him. Great communication and great product.
Thank you for the nice comments! Always great to hear from people who are having success with my product. When did you purchase the hinges? My latest design does allow for closer to 120 degrees of rotation. And as always, if you ever have an issue, don’t hesitate to reach out.
@@northwoodsengineered I purchased them this spring along with the drill guide. All good might upgrade to the newer hinges after this year. I have had a few people thinking of making something similar so I will send them your way for the hinges.
I wish I had time, and know how life you
On the front of the trailer where did you get the spare tire Mount
That’s an accessory directly from the trailer manufacturer, triton
No audio
There's only a right stereo channel.
Do you sell plans for that?
No I do not, sorry
I really like your design and aiming to use it for my cargo trailer as well but wanted to know if you found a structural reason for not extending past six feet?Im, hoping to get out to 8’ if possible, but didnt want to build if it cant handle it, thanks… awesome build!!!!
Thank you! I guess for the distance out from the trailer, you are limited by how tall the trailer is, because the piece that ends up horizontal is about as tall as the trailer wall. If it was any taller it wouldn’t work. But I suppose you could make that one telescoping as well and then it could be longer
Thats what I was wondering if it would be strong enough, thank you sir for getting back to me, you’re a class act!!!
@cabmanist no problem, let me know if you have any more questions along the way. You can always email me if needed.
