      Get them. Help save these pieces of wrestling history while we still can. I really miss collecting magazines. It was a bitter sweet moment when I completed all the issue’s. Yes, I achieved my goal to find them all, but now what? The hunt was the fun part. I missed it. I had new life in me when I started collecting Japanese issues. They were/are a challenge to find because they are all in Japan and very expensive. Like triple the price. Today all that’s left for me are a handful of event programs that I’m searching for. Not so much because I need or want them, because I don’t want the hunt to stop. Thanks for watching

    Bill seems as if our respective crushes when we were younger worked against one another. As I recall Fallen Angel wrestled Debbie Combs for Polynesian Pro which was The Rock’s grandmother’s promotion. Obviously so sad about Nancy. Debbie is still with us, working as a bounty hunter out of Florida. Still a total badass apparently. Thanks for the video!

      Well if I remember correctly I’d say Angels match against Debbie was more of Debbie destroying Angel lol, she had no offense and Debbie didn’t go easy on her either. I forgot about that. I have the whole show on dvd. Now I gotta pop it in and watch it. I think she also got in the ring for a match for the ICW the Savoldi company in New England. Her Kevin and the Haze wrestled there a lot in the 80s while they were in Florida they’d go back and forth. When she came to the ECW we had to fight for ringside seats because of her lol.

    I know you didn't like wrestling much in the later years, but what did you think of Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero and Bryan Danielson?

    • @prowrestlingmags
      @prowrestlingmags 2 дня назад

      Well, there’s not a very good way for me to say this, except for the truth and how I truly really feel. I keep the channel about the magazines only. It’s not a place to debate who’s the best and who sucks and why. Those lame and shallow discussions are infested all over social media and all it does is start an argument for nothing. That’s why there’s non of that here. I try to stay in the middle with my likes and hates but sometimes my hate spews out a little bit. I very much like wrestling in the later years. It just wasn’t as easy to find as the entertainment that some called wrestling. I’ve only ever “watched” Guerrero in the WCW, I never paid any attention to him because I’m not into smaller wrestlers who flip and fly around. I never watch a single match with Angle, I find him too nauseating. I don’t see any related to the WWF into the 90s. Mania 3 was the last show I ever watched, I’d catch a few tv matches here and there til 88 or so. But by 1989 the initials WWF no longer existed to me. Danielson, I never heard of him, I’m assuming he’s a WWF guy. I won’t watch anyone with the stench of the WWF on them. For a long time I’d only watch Japan and certain Indy companies. Anymore it’s old tapes and rarely venture out of that time period. When I hate something or someone it gets completely erased from my life. It’s hard to explain in a message let’s use a president for example. A lot people get so caught up in their hate for the president that it consumes their lives. He’s constantly on their minds, they follow his every move, they watch every interview, and then bitch about how much more they hate them. That’s insane to me. When I hate something, I don’t even think about it. It’s not longer thought about because it puts me in a really bad mood. There for my hatred and distain for Vince McMahon prevents me from watching anything related to him or any of his “superstars.” I’m quite sure this is not the answer you wanted to hear. But speaking honestly that’s how it is for me! I have nothing good to say about today’s guys, because I don’t know anything about them nor am I interested to watch them. I love pro wrestling, I only follow the times that I loved. As hard as that may seem to believe l can’t name 5 ppl in the WWF. (I say F because I’ll never speak that “E” bullshit. Quite frankly, I’m glad they changed the name and separated themselves for it. Because the entertainment comedy acrobat hour is a slap of the face to the men who wrestled before them..

    I may comment more later, but just wanted to note the Woman/Nancy Benoit thing. No offense to fans (or Randy Savage or Lex Luger) of Miss Elizabeth, but she never really did anything for me. Woman on the other hand really made me think certain thoughts probably better not written here. It took awhile before there was anyone that matched her for me and by then I was largely out of wrestling.

      Yes! I’m with you and hope Kevin or anyone is making that pos eternally miserable. I always found her murder very eerie. I know her Fallen Angel times were just a gimmick, but the end that she meet was ironic and very much the work of the devil. I just hope it was quick and no one suffered. As a teen in the 80s I thought she was the hottest thing in a dirty way. Thanks to him when I see her now it’s depressing. Thanks for watching man.

      Ahhh No, nothing personal against the Dog. Always loved JYD. I don’t pre plan these videos, my minds is racing a mile a min. And that is another reason I dislike a posed cover. They don’t set me up much for discussion. It’s much easier to talk about a match/feud in progress on a cover. I don’t think JYD was ever used right in the WWF. We missed out on what could have been some awesome feuds like he had in mid south. I thought the feud with Funk was gonna be a bloody war! But sadly that never amounted to much. Thanks for watching.

    Fun and informative as always. Are there people that actually complain about the length or is it more your time you are cognizant of? I feel like if you broke these up and had even longer sections, most of us wouldnt mind. A few things: Burt Randolph Sugar wasnt my favorite guy, but mostly because he seemed like a caricature and seemed to have a really high opinion of himself...but I am also being introduced to him relatively late in his career as a guest on shows. Earl Maynard -- never heard of him and wow did he have the look! Fake apartment wrestling? My day is ruined...j/k

    • @prowrestlingmags
      @prowrestlingmags 7 дней назад

      Well knot knowing of Burt til later is a good thing. It gave you less time to hate him lol. He was always like that. I feel the same way about him as you. Especially when he’d always trash MMA. He trashed it because he knew MMA would surpassed boxing and it did. Fast too! He was hurt by it, because he loved boxing so much. It crushed him to watch it weather away and take a backseat. I kinda get it and feel for him in that sense. Kinda like McMahon did to us fans. Burt had great stories and was extremely knowledgeable in boxing, he was just too much of a douche for me. Actually like you said “a caricature” that’s perfect. I respect him for his efforts to combat the corruption in the sport. That’s another reason he disliked mma. Because no one can be bought off! It’s one person, Dana. (Dana McMahon) lol. The UFC doesn’t have match 15 makers, promoters, councils, associations, politicians, and the mob to deal with. He had the balls to take on state athletic commissions to make more honest and fair rankings of fighters. He tried to put a stop to mob ties and influences they had over the Ring Magazine when it came to ranking fighters to make them appear better than they really were, and sometimes worse than they really were to sway the bet odds. He and Cus Demato both exposed that in court. They are lucky they weren’t killed. But In the end, the crooked promoters who ran the sport won the battle, but Bert made them pay in blistering editorials he wrote and on live TV telling it like it is and exposing things. About the long vids. I was told a long time ago when I started the ch by other RUclipsrs to keep my videos short. About 20 mins they said. I was like 20 MINS?? I can’t talk that long wtf will I say? I just wanna show the covers so collectors are exposed to each issue. Well as each video went on people would ask me to slow down and talk about certain topics, because they found it interesting. I was like geez OK I can do that. Then people started asking me to make videos about certain topics and I started doing that. That led me into making videos over an hour. But I always remembered in the back of my mind the people telling me keep them short. I didn’t wanna make it boring for people if I talk too much. I know that can be rather nerve-racking for viewers if they don’t feel like hearing what the person has to say. When I set out to make a video I try to make it under 40 minutes but the time goes so fast and I don’t pre-plan what I’m going to say. I just show the cover and let the magazine do the talking through my mouth. It’s all shot with my iPhone. I don’t know how to edit anything so it’s all in one take. If I I make a mistake, I usually correct it in a pinned comment. I often feel like I’m talking too much. Kinda like in this reply here lol, I’m speaking to text, I don’t have my glasses on, so I can’t proofread it. Please excuse any mistakes in spelling and grammar.

    • @patrickm7483
      @patrickm7483 3 дня назад

      @@prowrestlingmags Great stuff! For me boxing and pro wrestling were my first loves. I was all in for MMA for about 5-10 years. I think my problem goes to the "Dana McMahon" the more it acquired and became the standard, the less I started to follow. Maybe it was a bit of too much (TUF season after season, free events, PPVs, etc.) and I missed the way it used to feel for me. I guess it's a little like pro wrestling. (Also, at some phase, they all just felt like kickboxing events -- I know it's not, but everyone is so well rounded these days that it seems like standup is the match focus often). Boxing still scratches that itch in a way it has no right to with all of it's shady past, present, and future. Though, being in Omaha, I do get to lay claim to Bud Crawford! (Apparently his kids are really good wrestlers and he's no slouch, so maybe there is an MMA future for them.) Always looking forward to more videos.

I'm looking really forward to seeing what you have in store for us in 2025. It's cool that you are collaborating with Bill Apter and I can't wait to see what that leads to on your channel. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for sure. I'm a boxing writer and did a story a few years ago on Joe Frazier's exploits in professional wrestling that resulted in him reffing the Flair/Dusty million dollar match at Starrcade '84 and, naturally, Apter was one of the people I reached out to for info on the subject, which is incredibly scarce. As you said, Bill is a busy guy and hard to nail down in one place for very long, but I had a nice chat or two with him on the phone about his personal experiences with Frazier, Ali, and others. Very nice guy and generous with what little spare time he does have. Anyway, keep up the great work and I'll keep watching!

All the struggles, challenges and triumphs. Physical injuries and handicaps such as being blind in one eye, lacking mobility, and strength in his left arm from a serious injury that went neglected and forced to heal improperly on its own. How the fuck do you beat Ali with a bad left arm and blind in one eye. That’s something else. A couple years ago I was talking to Bill about boxing. He took some phenomenal photos of Ali over the years. I was hoping to hear about his experience with Tyson. But he said he didn’t deal with Mike very much after he won the world title. But did get to do a few shoots with him for the magazines in his “rookie year”. He said Mike was just a real nice, respectful, quiet kid, who could kill you with one punch lol. Joe Louis also did some stints with Pro Wrestling in the 50s as well referee

      @@prowrestlingmags I'm from Huntington on Long Island, Gerry Cooney's old hometown. I agree with everything you said about Joe Frazier. The guy was a walking, talking testament to resilience and a never say die work ethic. Interesting backstory to him refereeing the Flair/Dusty bout. Joe worked some mixed matches against Carlos Colon and Victor Jovica in Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively, and reffed two Colon matches, one against Hercules Ayala and the other against Bruiser Brody. Possibly some others that aren't documented. I'm also a huge fan of Joe Louis and did a piece on his short stint in pro wrestling as well. Cowboy Rocky Lee damn near killed him when he stomped on Joe's chest one night and broke a rib which almost punctured his lung. There are quite a few boxer/wrestler crossovers, Primo Carnera probably being the best known. Archie Moore's last fight was a legit boxing match against Iron Mike DiBiase. Too bad there's not enough meat on the bone magazine-wise for you to dedicate an episode to boxers vs. wrestlers, but there's lots of amazing stories out there. I was born in 1970 and didn't start watching boxing and wrestling until I was about 12, so I missed out on the heyday of Frazier and Ali and the great 70s heavyweights, but the 80s had plenty going for them with the wars between Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, and Duran, and the rise of Iron Mike. That's cool that Apter at least rubbed shoulders with Tyson early on. I've met Mike a few times, as I believe you have also, and found him to be a nice guy despite his reputation.

      You and I have a lot of the same interests man. I loved Boxing. There was nothing better then that Big fight “feeling” for the world title. That excitement and electricity to the buildup for the fight was magic. EVERYONE felt it!! Mom‘s dad‘s aunt’s uncle‘s school teacher’s all talking about it with excitement, it was the awesome. I haven’t had that feeling and so long I can’t remember. I love boxing. I love training in the boxing gyms. I love everything about it and I miss it terribly. It’s just not the same “for me” anymore. I hate to keep saying that about everything, It’s just how I feel, I wish I didn’t feel this way. I loved Marvin Hagler to death. He was the first non-heavyweight that I fell in love with. I was so mad after he lost to Ray. So much so that I hated Ray. For no other reason, other then he always won. As I matured and I progressed when I was training, I was able to see fights differently. More with a “fighter‘s eye” rather than a fans eye. It was then that I really became a big fan of Sugar Ray. I love this footwork, the way he moved, his body mechanics, his ability to explode with fast bombs one second and then dance around the outside the next. That is pretty impressive and very difficult to pull off when someone’s trying to really hit you. It’s hard to explain in a text. I have a cousin who was a boxer. And let me make it very clear, he is a distant cousin. I nevermet him or any of that side of the family. My father and his father are a second cousins and we don’t speak to that side of the family. But I’d cheat for him, I’d get excited when he thought. But other than that, nothing excited me until probably the greatest fight ever in my opinion Gotti x Ward. All of them 1-2-3. Incredible!! I’m quite sure you would agree with that one.

      @@prowrestlingmags Absolutely agree that the Gatti/Ward trilogy reignited many people's love of old-school style boxing (myself included), especially the first fight which was an instant classic. I don't know if you've ever gotten to meet Micky Ward, but he is one of the most genuinely nice and humble guys you'll ever talk to. My three favorite boxers when I started watching in the early 80s were Dwight Qawi, Boom Boom Mancini, and Marvin Hagler. Like you, I loved Marvin's intensity and blue collar work ethic. There was simply no stopping or denying him when he was locked in. What a war he had against Mugabi. Funny story: I was talking to Bert Sugar about the Hagler/Leonard fight at the boxing hall of fame inductions one year with Ray and Marvin both in attendance and probably in close proximity to where we were. I asked Bert who he really thought won that fight and he said, although he didn't care for Leonard's hit and run style, that he thought Ray squeaked out the decision. Then he looked around in exaggerated nervousness and said, "Marvin didn't hear that, did he?" Bert Sugar was quite a character. I'm right there with you, though, that loss broke my heart and obviously Marvin's as well. I remember that feeling you described so well about the excitement swirling around the big fights back then that everybody would be talking about. That just doesn't happen anymore, with the unfortunate exception of the Tyson/Jake Paul debacle. Seems like the only time people discuss boxing these days it's for all the wrong reasons. And rightfully so, for the most part. Like you said, It's nowhere near the same as it was when you and I were growing up. And that's not just nostalgia talking. The same goes for wrestling. I checked out of the modern era long ago when it transitioned into "sports entertainment" but maintain a keen interest in the history of wrestling. Which is why I love your channel and will keep coming back for more. Keep up the great work!

    Great vid Bill. I may have had one or two issues of Wrestling Revue back in the day but was never a fan. I guess I was hooked on all of the Weston publications, especially The Wrestler. I do remember seeing the first issue you showed with the Graham Brothers in the back issue section of the mags. And, I coveted that issue because of the cool cover showing the Grahams with the Tag Titles around their waists. It is interesting how a cover is made better by showing a wrestler or tag team with a championship title. To me, that was almost as appealing as showing a real bloody cover. It helped sell magazines. I agree with you, the TV Wrestling with Buddy Rogers on the cover is the finest looking wrestling magazine ever. And, again, it is one I remember seeing in the back issue section of the Weston mags. I always wanted a copy but even back then it was a little expensive. And, with limited finances, I could get a bunch of The Wrestler or Inside Wrestling back issues for as little as a dollar a piece. Oh, how I was counting down the days until those back issues came in the mail. It was like Christmas morning. Back then we waited at least four weeks and usually more before they came to us. The Februrary 1965 issue of Wrestling Illustrated was another back issue I remember wanting but never picked up. When I lived in the suburbs of Chicago in the early to mid 1970s, I watched a lot of Dick the Bruiser's WWA wrestling. The Golden Boy Paul Christy was there and at the time, a fan favorite. I faintly remember a tag team match with Christy and Sailor Art Thomas against the Bounty Hunters. The Bounty Hunters were undefeated at the time. Christy was getting the tar beaten out of him when he finally made the hot tag to Thomas who cleaned house. Eventually Christy tagged back in and briefly put up some offense before he started to get beat on again. I remember thinking to myself why did Thomas tag him back in...lol. But, to my surprise, Paul pinned one of the Bounty Hunters and the fans went nuts. Even if I was not a fan of this magazine, I learn so much from these videos. Thank you for all you do to keep the memory of the magazines alive for us.

      Hey man it’s good to hear from you as usual. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year brother, I’ll take healthy over happy I guess! That seems to be the most value at this point in my life lol. I’m going to be doing a couple of re-shoots, possibly even a reshoot of one or two rise of videos. The ones that I filmed early on, the ones that got very little views. I think they need to be redone. I agree with you, man I was not a fan of wrestling revue at all.. Sports review yes. Looking back and reading some of them now they’re a lot better than I gave credit for. Back then as a kid it was the eye candy that made it great for me, those awesome photos. the perfect front covers etc. But wrestling revue had some shit covers lol

    The Masked Assassin (Jody Hamilton) or the Masked Assassins (Jody Hamilton and different partners) never appeared on any wrestling magazine covers?! I think I recall an issue in which The Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant unmasked the Assassin #2 (Hercules Hernandez).

      No, he never appeared on a cover of a magazine wrestling, posing, or being unmasked. When I say magazines I mean the issues that were mass released on all the news stands. Not the company or arena magazines. They were on several covers of the Florida Grapevine program (not a magazine tho)

      Thanks my friend. Always good to hear from you. Thanks for continuing to watch each time a vid is uploaded. My biggest challenge for the videos were the horrible glare that I have from all the different lights, windows, and mirrors in my room. But I figured out some ways to make things work and look a lot better than in my earlier videos. So I’ll be redoing a couple of more Videos like this one. Some of the older videos got very low views. Mostly because most people don’t go back into the channel and search older videos. Also I was brand new channel just out of the gate, and the algorithm really didn’t help me at all the first few months. But now the reach is quite broad, I’m happy to say.

    My only critique so far watching this episode is it would be cool to see inside the issues where the masked wrestlers were unmasked. I appreciate your logic, but realistically how many of us have the time or resources to find and buy these issues?! I also have a question for you: my understanding was that to respect kayfabe the industry publications would often not mention, much less picture, an unmasking so as to not jeopardize story lines in the new territory the hooded grappler was moving to (after having been unmasked in the previous, usually distant territory). Is this so?

      “How many of us have the time and resources to find and buy them? This channel is for wrestling magazine collectors. Not entertainment or a history lesson. 99% of the viewers are collectors. There’s thousands of us out there who come here to get exposed to issues they never seen before or are in search of to complete what they are collecting.

    I just found your channel and subscribed. I grew up in Florida watching Eddie Graham's CWF. One of my earliest memories was Bob Roop getting unmasked (he was supposedly injured!). I also remember the Assassin #1 masquerading as "El Santo" sneak attacking Dusty Rhodes. My favorite masked grappler was The Spoiler (Don Jardine). Jardine I believe also wrestled as the Super Destroyer. Man, he was so cool walking the top rope! I also liked how he wore a baseball batting glove on his "claw hand".

      Buddy vs Blassie? I don’t think so. They were both heels they wrestled on opposite sides of the coast East/West. As for the wrestlers you named that are alive I don’t believe I said anything to the contrary about them being alive or dead.
