Starting to Understand Yiddish?! | Learning Yiddish Vlog 2 | Workers Circle Yiddish Classes Online

Thank you for coming along on my Yiddish learning journey! This is the next few weeks of Yiddish classes online with the Workers Circle. I'm still an ultra baby beginner in this language, but I felt like I was starting to get the hang of things a little bit during this time (while still being extremely aware of how much I can't do yet). AND, of course, I continue to struggle with pronunciation....

    I am Jewish. I did hear some Yiddish at home more than 50 years ago. No grammar and vocabulary of a couple dozen words. Since I retired I've been learning Yiddish daily, I believe it is my mitzvah, my way to fight Hitler and Stalin. Unfortunately, nobody is around to teach or just to speak to me in Yiddish except my PC. Maybe someone has a different mitzvah - to share his knowledge of Yiddish?

    As somehow who used to be fluent in Russian, and who found it fun to manually translate between dictionaries, I honestly say I have ZERO interest in learning multiple languages now, and there is ZERO shame in being monolingual. Even when I was fluent in Russian, I NEVER EVER liked or wanted to communicate in real time with other people: NEVER liked speaking or listening. Was always ONLY interestied in reading and writing, which can be done at one's own pace. Not this realtime bullshit. Governments all over the world should issue every single person a handheld translation device. I already know 2 languages: English and Math. My brother is fluent in English, Java, Python, C++, and other computer languages. Other people are fluent in one native language + highly technical scientific language. There is no reason no logic to care about saying the same ideas over and over but merely with different squiggles and different sounds.

    Hey! I really like your videos! Boku wa nihongo no gakusee. I hope that's right haha.. I'm in Florida studying my Genki textbooks and watching a million youtube videos about Japan and the algorithm brought me to your channel 😊 I appreciate your advice about going at my own speed and I'm trying to wrap my head around sentence mining and how to do it. I've discovered Anki and have been doing my flashcards everyday (I pretty much have hiragana memorized 100% now) so I'm feeling proud that i can read it.. i just wish i knew what the words meant lol. Anyway, I have a long way to go but I'm hyper-motivated because I plan to buy akiya in Japan in the next year and I'm simultaneously learning about that. Anyway, I'm appreciative of your easy, breezy, and beautiful language learning content and am excited to hear more from you soon! Ps, if you enjoy AoT and Monster (Monster! So good!) you might enjoy Gintama. I'm just getting into it but it's so silly and it really cracks me up.

    OMG, Visual Novels being porn 99% of the time is infuriating, because the format itself, text based, voice acting, is the perfect formula for Japanese immersion. I'm playing an amazing game right now for the switch (on my pc using an emulator), ファミコン探偵倶楽部, voice acting, logs where you can replay the audio of any sentence at any time, fairly simple vocab and requires you to actually understand the story to solve a murder mystery.

    Magnificent video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

    I'm a non-native speaker of English, and the way I speak out loud, when I do so in a casual manner, turned out kinda like yours😂. Like, the sentences you speak are totally what I might have said, and some other idiosyncrasies, even the vocal fry. Learning through immersion is a hell of a ride. 💁‍♂ 🤣 I never set my foot outside of my home-country and I rarely talk with friends in English out loud, but I do practice talking out loud everyday. So, you know for anyone reading this, keep it up my dudes, language learning can be done just with what you already got on your hands. I respect a lot your skillfulness with your Japanese. Here's the YOLO manifest, I've carefully crafted for all the my homies: I never gave a damn about following any formal method to learn English. I simply unleashed the beast within me and went all out with what I call the YOLO method. It's about surrendering to your cravings and getting high on the language like a freakin' cocaine addict. Set the damn language on all your devices, immerse yourself in it, and search online only in your target language. No more wasting time on other languages. Unless it's absolutely necessary, stick to the language you want to master. And when you do indulge, go balls deep! Binge-watch the hell out of shows like The Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, or whatever might be of your liking. The YOLO method requires you to watch the entire show in the shortest time humanly possible, pushing your body to the limit. And here's the kicker - no subtitles in a language you're already comfortable with. Only the target language. No mental translations allowed, just go with the flow. Don't overthink it, just talk to yourself like a complete maniac in that language. Hell, even think in that language. You need to become one with it. But let me be real with you, I'm not sure I can handle that level of intensity all over again with Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, German, Standard Arabic, or Mandarin Chinese. English took a special place in my heart, and I wasn't casual about it. But don't get me wrong, I still take a laid-back approach to expressing myself in it because that's just who I am. 🤣 Okay, that was a bit weird. It just sounds cringe, but it was fun to write. Btw, comments like this was what helped me learn to write better. So, write lots of comments online in your target language, that's always available and you don't need a friend to write to, although, that's preferable. Those days, you can use a Large Language Model like ChatGPT to help you. Although, be aware that it was optimized for English, and in other languages it might sound strange.

    • @tomasgombik3363
      @tomasgombik3363 Год назад

      Good Luck. Duolingo is a great way to get started and used to the alphabet. Although you should eventually supplement it with other resources. I just decided that it is time to start learning Yiddish although I don't have any Jewish heritage( at least far as I know), but I like the sound of the language and I like learning new writing systems. Fortunately Yiddish has a huge library of resources, although mostly older ones, but still compared to some other languages it is great. I also went ahead and bought the In eynem textbook, yeah it is expensive, but by just skimming through it assured me it was money well spend. It has a very modern layout and a great companion website. And it is contemporary so that is a plus. And it is huge, almost like a Bible itself:) So I would recommend it to anyone interested in the language, and they still have it on sale $54 for pdf and $100 for print. which is a lot but not that bad compared to some other language books with far less content.

    Since Yiddish is a mixture of languages, you might be able to connect some German and English to certain words. Like lektsyes is like lecture, classes or education is traditionally a lecture. Lektsyes. German 'wo makst du' is how are you? Yiddish is 'vos makhstu' pronounced very, very similarly. German wo and Yiddish vo are about idential, and the last part is run together. I think you'll get it until it comes to distinctions, grammar, and words like russian, lithuanian, or hungarian mixed it. <3 I'm a beginner, too! Thank you for providing a clear pathway (that I don't have to design) for learning Yiddish, since I don't think there are classes locally.

    I looked up why the Yiddish course on DuoLingo was so controversial since we have a lot of the same path, including Japanese first and then Yiddish. The DuoLingo makes the 'path' easy but they've actually mixed the pronunciation and grammar of two different dialects of Yiddish into something like "duolingo yiddish dialect," a distinct language of it's own.
