Simplified Bee Drying Method - Straight from Alcohol with No Washing
Просмотров 2404 месяца назад
Previously we've posted methods for washing and drying bee specimens that involved washing them in soapy water then drying and fluffing up with hair dryer. Those methods work but they are time consuming and come with the risk of over drying bees making them crispy and easy to damage when pinning. This new method is for bees that are stored in alcohol and cuts out the washing in soapy water step...

How to Wash and Dry Bees with the Bee Drying Vortex!

Bee specimens are often covered in pollen and have matted hairs. Both of these can make them difficult to identify. To get the most beautiful specimens that are easy to identify it is necessary to wash and dry them so they are clean with fluffy hairs. Nash Turley leads a tutorial for a cheap DIY methods for drying bees with minimal equipment, primarily a jar with a screen top and a hair dryer. ...

    • @BillyBobBrockali69
      @BillyBobBrockali69 3 дня назад

      For labeling the most important things to include are the location where you found it and the date it was collected. That’s the basic info needed for anyone studying your collection later. If you want to go a step further, you can also add your name as the collector and a few details about the habitat like 'in a garden' or 'near a river'. The more detail you can provide, the better.

      Yes we are pinning them and storing them in insect drawers. I've posted some other videos on this channel about washing, drying, and pinning bees. Note however, insect should only be collected if you have a plan in place to get them properly procesed, labeled, and deposited in a natural history collection.

    i retrieved my drowned cicada killer specimen from a pool and didnt put her in any alcohol. its been a couple days and i think shes losing her color. should i rehydrate her and put her in isopropyl to keep her from rotting any further, or is it too late?

    • @NashTurley
      @NashTurley Год назад

      some bugs loose their color when pinned unfortantly, and I think that is true of cicadas (from my memory of seeing them in drawers). A bug could be pretty dry after a few days and would be too brittle to pin. If you want to pin the cicada then either rehydrate by putting in a container with moist paper towel, or put in 50-70% alcohol for a day or more. Being in alcohol will rehydrate enough to pin and may also have the advantage of getting rid of fungus that may be on there.

    Hi. I’m actually doing my thesis on bee diversity in our local area. Sadly, I couldn’t find someone who can identify and certify my bee species for me. So I’ve been on a limbo trying to decide whether or not to pursue this. But do you think I could use online resources (which are, like yours, from foreign countries) to assist me in identifying my bee species?

    • @NashTurley
      @NashTurley Год назад

      I don't know about the specifics of your country / region, but in general resources from other countries could be helpful for identifying bees to genus level, assuming your area has similar genera (which may or may not be the case). Species-level identification would require resources / expertise from your area.

    • @NashTurley

    How long should I put them in the alcohol?

    • @NashTurley
      @NashTurley 2 года назад

      Having bees in alcohol is not a necessary step, for example sometimes bees are killed by freezing or with a kill jar, but storing in alcohol is often convient or makes most sense if they are already wet (like from a trap). They can stay in alcohol perhaps indefinitely, but in some cases alcohol can make them brittle (especially if 90% or more) and more likely to break when pinning, but rehydrating them before pinning can get around that issue.
