It's pretty spooky to see this footage knowing what was to happen to him less than two years later after this show. He looks almost just like a black version of later, heavier Elvis, complete with the 1970s white jumpsuit. They were actually only about 6 months apart in age and obviously were great influences upon each other and had such similar ends at roughly the same age. Jackie Wilson's life was perhaps even more chaotic than Elvis' and he experienced a level of poverty and of course racism that Elvis didn't (even though obviously Elvis' family was white working-class poor with a lot of chaos of its own). Both looked like much older men by their late 30s and there's a foreboding sense of doom and desperation in their performances from that era.

I got to know Ruby Nash in 2008 when we were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall Of Fame. I was inducted as one of The "Original" Duprees. We became friends as we walked around, arm in arm backstage at The Chevrolet Center. It is one of my fondest memories. She was and is a charming, talented lady.

As well as the Intruders, Delphonics, Blue Magic, Labelle... Hell, all of Philadelphia Int'l,, Stax, Motown, and all in between.

I loved the record big time when I was a kid in the 60's. Still a fine tune. Wow, now I see how badly those great backing vocals were so regrettably buried in the studio recording. Way way overdoing it with the brushes on that snare drum way up front. That Wurlitzer in the bridge with the chimes stop pulled all the way out and riding too high on the gain is just obnoxiously dreamy to my ear now. They were selling that record as a "safe" love song to white Bandstand teenagers, Mickey Mouse Club pre-teens and their moms. "Our day will come if we just wait a while. No sex for us, think love and wear a smile." That was still also a time when Black artists were fairly accepted in crossover charts, but the idea of "race music" wasn't so far back in the mainstream that very few, like Little Richard and comic groups like The Coasters were really permitted the "Black" sound. The authentic acts all had their music co-opted by white producers and acts like Elvis, Bill Haley & the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, and in the most pathetic of all cases Pat Boone's "rendition" of Little Richard's Tutti Fruity.
