    The Mazda driven by Yoshimi Katayama and Allan Moffat was having front brake trouble and dropped out of contention to win, well done to Peter Brock and Larry Perkins for the win.

    If I am not mistaken, one of the factors behind Caltex Chase being added to the circuit was following the death of Mike Burgmann during the James Hardie 1000 in 1986, am I right?

    Shame Morris went that hard, he was catching the DJ car with plenty of time to pass Gibson without taking risks like that. Would have made a hell of a finish if he didn't crash, and caught up to French.

    Old Aussie here of 73 mechanic & went to these Races many years in a row & Loved Alan Moffit ! Very fast ,very smooth ,Reliable despite what many may think ? Very conservative ,Very humble & organised much he did himself,so knew the Cost & effort Required it took to Win ? Possibly because of his Nationality ,many didn't understand him ,took many things for granted about Him,which over time,proved incorrect ! Always Cared for his car & nursed them often to get home ,where many other drivers would not do? A master to watch ,in Concernt_ ration , placement ,control to get the job done ! Thank U for these old Races ,I will never forget them or the great Drivers !

      Chris Economaki is a highly regarded motor racing person no doubt! But it sounds like You don’t know Mike Raymond very well then? He has been a big part of the Australian car racing landscape since the 1960’s! Not just a commentator!

    geez man these cars were basically stock, still have the rear seats and passenger seats along with the stock dashboards. only thing not stock seems to be the engine, suspension, tires, and brakes, looking at the cars in the pits, they didnt even take out the sound dampening material from the cars.

  • @cameronelliott9709

    God Seven were crap in following the race, the Johnson pass on Perkins was one of the few changes in the lead and not only did they miss it it took them a lap to figure it out. Year after year you'd have to figure it out yourself where everyone was running and the gaps.

    • @chalkandcheese1868
      @chalkandcheese1868 4 месяца назад

      Yeah they pretty much missed everything back in those days, they were obsessed with fucking racecam, we only found out from Alan Grice himself about an hour later that his car was actually bumped off the track, which you didn't see from inside the car. Nostalgic but infuriating

    The podium with John Goss hardly able to even shake the bottle after holding himself in place because his seat was broken. For at least a couple of hundred race kays and at the end still holding Brock at 30sec. And how Gossy grabbed that brass ring and didn't let go.

    Allan Moffat as a commentator worked beautifully, it was a pleasure to hear the intelligent in-car with Dick Johnson. I had just finished 84 pt2 and Dick had stopped from lack of fuel, the stupid commentator doing the in-car just went on and on about how bad is it for you Dick. And Jill in the pits being scrutinized in the hope she'd cry or something. Been watching all the earlier Bathurst telecast's as well and Evan Green was good value, can't even bear listening to any from the last twenty years coz they commentate for wood ducks who know nothing about cars. And everyone has an O added to their name Gibbo, explain why they need air in their tyres Larko matey. No criticism of Mark Larkham intended, he's the real deal.

    These old Bathurst videos are great, watched it on the day and a coupla times since then. It's hard listening to the commentators sucking up to Prince Leopold with the His Royal Highness stuff but. He probably got sick of it also. Fury shoving Harvey off the track was epic and if you watch the previous year Fury during the in car drops an f bomb and there was no seven second button then, I thought Fury was brilliant.

    After 1980 and a year of Dick Johnson and the 'rock' saga boring everyone to death, all Australians were glad to finally hear the end of it with the start of the 1981 race. But then of course, Johnson drama again when he didn't really win the 1981 race.

    The bits with no commentary originally contained adverts. These breaks are loaded with atmosphere, the camera people are relaxing and you get a feel for the reality of why everyone is there. Normal type people, not preening publicity hounds. This race was truly magnificent, a saga with a cast of thousands. I miss it like I miss our motor industry.
