Bicycle Touring: The US Gulf Coast
Hello Everyone! This is my next and FINAL video concluding my very first bicycle tour from New York City to New Orleans. It's a bit long, so more like a movie, but theres some great coastal beach scenes, some swamps (look out for the alligator!) and even some cotton fields from southern Alabama. Here I cover my ride from Montgomery, Alabama to New Orleans, Louisiana, with some quick scenes from the trip back home, as well as some final stats on my journey.
The tour itself was a very happy and adventurous experience as I'm sure you could tell from watching my videos. I really loved sharing my experience on RUclips. Not only did it give me something to do, but I feel like I picked up a coup...

    I will agree. The C&O tow path is the worst when it comes to cycle touring. I did the GAP and C&O with a couple friends in 2017 and the Paw Paw tunnel was closed. That meant a 3/4 mile hike-a-bike (fully loaded) up over the hill to get back on the trail.

    You have a kick stand on your bike and you missed some dirt roads. A USGS topological map on a CD is the way to go. Use Google street view and satellite to add additional information Nobody paints a yellow line down a dirt road State DOT record daily traffic volumes on maps that are available on line. VTrans Traffic Data Management System, MASS DOT Traffic Volume and Classification map, AVcog Maps Maine, ARC Gis maps NH, etc. I have called town governments up to ask if a dirt road is still a public through-way East St/Maple St from Bennington VT to Arlington VT is really nice.

    Enjoy watching your videos. Very well put together. May I ask you how are you funding your tour? Keeping up with whatever monthly bills you may have, and then having the funds for all the needed expenses out on your tour? This is a topic that I feel many bicycle tourers don't speak on to inform and encourage others to go on their own tours. Thank you for your reply. Hope to hear from you.

    • @12carza
      @12carza 6 лет назад

      Hi! Sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. For this tour, I funded it by working my seasonal job as a beach lifeguard in NYC and living as minimally as possible both on and off the bike. I do not have a car, or any loans that I have to pay back. My monthly expenses are pretty minimal and I'd say I can comfortably tour on 20-30 US dollars per day and that's still very bloated. It can be done for cheaper. There are some hidden costs though like equipment and such. I probably overspent but I paid probably near $2 k for my bike, panniers, and extra stuff that I wanted/ needed for this tour.

      Don't get pissy Christian. I wasn't trying to insult ya. I had a yellow slicker as a kid and hated it. You want to ride around looking like an ambulance that's on you dude. I prefer to be able to blend in when I want. - imgur.com/a/HpCo6wW

    • @rb1179
      @rb1179 6 лет назад

      According to the experts, yellow is the most visible on the road, so I say go for it Christian. Personally, I don't want to blend in with my surroundings. Getting hit by one truck in broad daylight is enough for me.

    • @brianbassett4379
      @brianbassett4379 6 лет назад

      I completely agree with being seen... when you want. I too was punted to the pavement by a Dodge Durango at noon on a dry hot sunny day in the PNW. That kept me off my bike for close to a month, I'm old and don't bounce back well anymore. Bounce? I wish! I hit the pavement like a ripe avocado. I was still laying on the ground trying to think of something witty or cool to say when the woman ran back to her car and drove away in front of God everybody. I guess my being alive was good enough for her. Colors can help draw attention, like lights and reflective surfaces or a big tall flag on a fiberglass pole, orange usually, not yellow. Maybe someone should tell them about your "experts" theory like ambulance companies obviously have. Their kinda yellow, if electric screaming yellow is a color. It's not just about being seen though. Lots of drivers don't seem to care much about bikers safety. A friend of mine zip-tied a pool-noodle to his bike hanging out close to 3 feet on the left. He swears that it helps keep cars at the legal distance. I say record it all and if anyone touches the noodle they get fined and the rider splits it with whoever issues the ticket, city, county, or state. I just picture riding past a long line of people and hearing the steady wack, wack, wack of the noodle. I wasn't discounting the "power" of yellow... I just associate it with something that I learned to dislike as a kid. I certainly wouldn't kick a babe out of bed for wear yellow panties. And my blue and gold macaw has yellow all over her and she's beautiful. I went a different direction with my bike. I find that being able to blend into the environment can be surprisingly helpful. - imgur.com/a/uOZpUZJ

    Sure thing do your planning because this so many back roads I mean when I call back roads the not really but secondary roads is what they are and yeah maybe when you get time and you got your major root mapped out touch base with me and I'll give you some places to go off your primary root I'm up in a town called Old Town if you've ever heard of Old Town Canoes well that's where they make them is where I live if you've ever heard of the University of Maine at Orono where I'm like 10 minutes from Orono I'm not 10 minutes from their college but just the town from Old Town there is a bike path that leads to the university in Bangor in the summertime has concerts on the waterfront you might want to look that up online is Bangor Maine so there's a lot to do and see here although I'm not the type to get out and do that now if I lived in another state or whatever I would definitely be traveling around more than I do but I was born and raised here in Maine I was raised in the southern part of the state and the people up here in the northern part of State much more friendly much more friendly alright I'll let you get going thanks for touching base with me preciate it as I see some of your other videos if you have any I'll make comments on them get back to me when you can no big hurry I will talk to you later

    The other thing I like that you talked about occasionally be really cool if you did a video on it how you've never had a license and that never owned the car and that you ride your bicycle everywhere are you from the New York City area is that why you never really needed a license or anything like that and have you ever been to Maine have you got future plans to come to Maine on a tour just curious get a ride through Vermont if you ever come to Maine then a roundabout way but definitely want to hit Burlington and Rutland all up through there and the Killington area anyway look forward to your reply

      Hey! Thanks for keeping up with my trip and for viewing my videos. I am just itching to get back out there and start another bicycle trip/ documentary series. Been working a lot these past 2 years so I haven't been able to leave for an extended amount of time but I hope to start traveling again soon. Still don't have my license... Yes I am from New York City (born and raised in Queens) and have never seen the necessity of having a car here when riding a bike is faster and generally more enjoyable. Cycling culture is growing here but it's a fact that we live in a motorist dominated culture which makes things difficult as a cyclist sometimes... I'll still take my bike anywhere over a motor vehicle. I would absolutely love to take a New England trip and skirt through coastal Maine and into the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Thanks for your input.
