The Cagiva 125 used a different bore and stroke than pretty much all the Jap bikes. The Cagiva used a 56 X 50 while most of the jap engines use 54 X 54.5 Don't know if that's the culprit in it running a little better or not, just worth pointing out.

One of my favourite bikes of all time

I know more claim to have been at the legendary Saddleback the day that Bruce Bunch and Rick Hemmed on RM80s beat the 125 Pro lap record than were actually there. It wasn't that busy that day and I was there. You could feel the hardpack clay shake when they went through Webco and then the left to go back down. Those kids were damn fast. It's like how the Ford Falcon and classic MINI Cooper can compete with each other. A smaller, lighter, and more nimble vehicle with a talented driver can be competitive. The YZ and the WMX would feel so different. More time riding the 500 would really improve that time. The rider seemed a bit unsure with the throttle at times. I picked up my 500 from the Cagiva N.A. warehouse still in the crate. It's #56 and I still have it. I just need to restore it. Cool video, great to hear the 500 again.

Not a good representation , it was Tom first go on a 2 stroke 500 and his second lap ,, and it scared the shit out of him near ending it up over a jump ,, that said if he had got use to it maybe he would be quicker ,,, Cagiva GB ,,

Nice video. I really sympathize with the driver. Feel the adrenaline almost like the rider himself hahahaha....... It was almost as if I was driving myself, but I would be by far the last. Thank you for this video.

It was an excellent motorbike at the time but on the sand of fast tracks the older Gilera C1 motorbike managed to beat it

from minutes 4-5 you dropped 4 places even though you were faster than them, you kept on rushing them at the corners and losing drive out thus you got overtook on the following straight, learn to slow corner entry when behind someone in order to maintain momentum and overtake on the next straight.
