SIMPLE TRICK TO FIX WORN/CORRODED CARBS THAT KEEPS FLOODING YOUR SAW BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW CARB!

This is a tip I picked up from an old school two stroke mechanic. If you’ve rebuilt your carb and still have issues with flooding chances are your needle and seat are worn out or dirty. The tip I show on here is a good thing to try before you go ahead and buy a replacement. IS THE MS170 ENOUGH FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON?
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.21 день назад
I bought this STIHL MS170 a while back and have been asked about how the saw preforms. For me personally I’ve found the weight to power ratio is enough but does struggle in larger trees where a 50CC range saw with more pep may shine. In the video I list some of the pros and cons compared to my Husqvarna saws and some of my other STIHLS For example the classic 024. It’s a light saw that has its ...

😅 the one i just bought is missing the center piece on the steering wheel too.
Ive a 170 i got free, guy hadn't used it for ages, got a new saw etc. cleaned the carb fresh and plug its a great little saw! Open up the exhaust a little and make sure the idle screw is set right. Also if you do keep it you can change the chain tensioner position to the clutch cover like the bigger saws very easy bout £10 for the part 1123 007 1000, dont buy a knock off one cheap as they're rubbish.
I'm having a problem with mine. Bar and chain both come off and the clutch cover.
Might have to reef on those 19mm nuts pretty hard. If it’s a 170 like mine and has the plastic clutch cover I’ve noticed on mine you need to tighten it up pretty good compared to a regular aluminum cover.
In changing the blade and chain you may have to switch out the the drive wheel as well. More expense.
On mine it seemed to match up. It’s got a weird style of clutch compared to a traditional one. From what I understand they are meant to be a wear part or cheaply made enough that they just are. I’ve seen of some people going to a conventional drum but I don’t think I will, it’s 20 bucks for two drums and I’ve got 17 sharpens on this chain alone plus the last one before this. And the clutch sprocket has just started to wear grooves in it to where it needs replacement. I got lucky, but yes when upgrading bar and chains the fine details do matter as you stated.
I've been thinking about opening the muffler on my 170 please update on the performance of yours like to know that it's ok to port the old 170 ,I just keep mine maintained... 👍
You can expect a video pretty soon 👍
Timing advance and single ring does em some good too!
@@JeffreySimundsonthis one’s going to get a timing advance soon I just haven’t got around to it yet.
@@FiveSpeedGarage you won't be disappointed
Chances is soon as u go dog in a 170 it will bog
Will have to see I suppose. With the bigger chain it will bog sometimes, I just lift it up a bit and let it clear out. I’ve been playing around with it putting various pressures on lit so it would be interesting to see how it would do dogged up into a tree.
The ms170 is a complete piece of garbage , stihl knows it and keeps on selling it because you dumb assssses keep buying it to save a buck or two , buy the 261 and never look back
Almost EVERY starting problem that exists with the Stihl saws(even much older models)involves the multifunction lever and the placement of it during cold starting. The choke MUST be fully closed for enough fuel to be pulled into the cylinder. The multifunction levers can pop out of place, break or otherwise become discombobulated generally as the result of rough use. It should NEVER, under ANY circumstance, take more than 3 pulls to pop and 2 more to be running once put into “semi choke” position. A warm saw should start with ONE pull, anything else and something is not right. It doesn’t seem conceivable to me that someone would take “10-15 minutes” to start a saw. That’s a lack of understanding about when to look for a problem or take it in for service. Sometimes I wonder if some of these responses are from competing model dealers or someone just looking to flame a certain brand. Stihl has built its reputation out of 100 years of innovation and solid reliable engineering. The MS170 is the pinnacle of 30cc saws, no other saw in that class has the power, reliability and longevity along with ease of use that this saw has, doesn’t exist…don’t look for it. My own personal saws are a 2011 MS170, a 2022 261-C,a 2023 400c and a 1995 064AV. Every time I load up to go do some tree work I look at that 170 and think to myself…”WOW! What a FANTASTIC saw.” And it is.
@@wizardsofwisconsin7400 Couldn’t agree more. I have a few bigger saws 40-60cc and I always end up grabbing this one. It’ll do everything the others do maybe not as fast but with the 16 bar it’s a very capable saw. Very light which I find nice for falling tree after tree you can go a good while and not even feel it
You can't buy a 170 new anymoore... they have been replaced..
Yes, there are a quite a few on the market still however. At least where I am they come up for sale decently cheap. I’ve found a good portion of them have been lightly used, again probably depends where you are.
I have the opposite experience....got the 170(new) last year. From cold, ever since I got it - it always takes me 10-15 minutes to get it running before I can use it. Very annoying. I rented an echo for a day to just compare - and that was no problem, starting/stopping whenever I wanted all day long. Maybe I just got a lemon - the dealer couldn't figure anything out.
Could be you have a lemon or I got lucky, I know in the past I’ve had other stihls that have been absolutely brutal to start. The problem I have with these is if the carb is off from the factory, there is no way to tune it to get it in that sweat spot, which definitely could be the case on yours. Carbs are sorta cheap might not be a bad idea if you still have it to try a different carb before selling it.
@@FiveSpeedGarage " there is no way to tune it to get it in that sweat spot, which definitely could be the case on yours." This is what I suspected. " try a different carb before selling it." Thanks for that tip...I will look into it. But as annoying the cold start is - once running and warm - it purrs along all day no problem. And related to what you mentioned in the video - yeah, I was surprised and how well it tackled the big trunks and trees with very dense wood. This was my first saw, and got me really enjoying chainsaw work. It's like a new hobby and even though getting a new carb will likely work - I think I'm going to try some other model/manufacturer, spending a bit more money this time, for another 'new toy.' This one for the price has already paid for itself many times over. Thanks again for your input.
Absolute shit video
Did you ever get your gauges to work? Im having the same problems at the moment
I never looked into it yet to be completely honest, use my phone as a speedo but I need to get it hooked up properly. Will let you know if I get it fixed up.
That lope they have is nuts
Everything that was wrong with the Ford 2000 for the most part was made right with the 3000. Diesel over Gas everyday of the week.
Sweet. Thanks for the info
I can't operate or engage the landini solis 75 4x4 pto.what can I do
They don't come any better.
Nice video man I am looking to buy a truck soon and def think I will end up having to swap a v8 in. I would love to find a 4.8 5spd already done
Would be a lot cleaner and easier to have a 4.8 already done up and ready to go. They were common back a few years ago still but people have used them as there intended purposes as trucks, and they’re getting to be fewer and fewer that are worth the money to get road ready. The V6’s tended to be a bit more common, at least in my experience. They do come up in either engine size every once in a while, hope you find one they’re a fun ride and just cool.
I bought a Ford 2000 almost 40 years ago. Its been a great machine. Mine has the front end loader. The power steering makes driving with a bucket load easy. It is very handy and helps with my fire wood collecting. Good Luck, Rick
Manual steering went out on mine. If I can't find someone to fix it...I'd sell her w/ attached loader.
Sounds stout
It's odd you claim your gas mileage went down 2-3 mpg. I've done several of my trucks and they all consistently have picked up 2-3 mpg with cam, headers, and tune. Also if you'll bite the bullet and do a truetrac you'll never break that rear end again. I beat the heck out of one of mine with a ls3 stroker and it never gave any problems.
@@heathcarr1105 I definitely see where you come from and I 100% agree you can maintain or increase stock fuel mileage but I’m just giving a base off of what people usually can expect by what I’ve gathered from others with the Texas speed 220R cams in these trucks. My truck can’t log fuel mileage so i don’t know for sure what I’m getting. But the person on a budget who wants it to run well and drive nice that doesn’t have a tune that is near perfect is going to miss out on some of the gains obviously, it’s also a part of driving habits. But I’m just giving input on what I’ve personally seen in daily drivers. I’ll definitely look into the truetrac thing for my next upgrade thanks for the comment.
Sounds good man! I like it!! I’ve got an ‘02 Silverado 4.8L v8
Grow up son and stop spewing immature disgusting vulgarity on a public video! How pathetic.
i am a newbee who has 5 acres of land I want to work. I am looking at getting this tractor. Just bought the shop manuals for it. Is there any particular years or options that you would recommend? how are parts availability and cost? thanks. Any weak points on them I should look for when buying? Also what is a good price? thanks
@@narcissistinjurygiver2932 would not worry about the years, all later models are same. Parts availability is good, you can buy rebuild kits online, most machine shops have seen these industrial fords before as well, and the new Holland dealers have been good around me for having parts in stock of getting them ordered in quickly. Prices are reasonable for a diesel, filters and such are the same price as most other tractors. Not much that can go wrong on these, very simple. When you go to view one of these you want to see it cold if possible, not started prior. They are usually a very easy starting tractor and don’t need starting fluid. But When they’re worn out you can crank and crank and then they’ll fire eventually and usually start easy all day once warmed up. Price wise, look at the condition of the tractor and the amount of hours it has. It’s going to be different depending on where you are. Look at the market value and assess the one you want. This one we paid 8,000 CAD and at the time it was at the high end of what they sold for, but it is a nicer one. Diesel models will always sell for more. Hope this can help, if you still have any questions feel free to ask.
@@FiveSpeedGarage thank you. I am moving to TN so I will be looking for a diesel one.
Also I read where you said you used the v8 clutch’s slave cylinder. Will I have to use a v8 slave cylinder or can I use the v6?
I hv a 2000 Silverado v6 5 speed manual and I plan to swap to a 5.3 v8. Will I be able to use my same transmission and also will I have to have it tuned because you mentioned something about it being automatic tuned to the engine or will it be ok
The 5.3 is a tad bit different on the crank if I recall. They never sold the 5.3 with a nv3500 so you will have to get the corresponding part numbers for the flywheel and clutch. There is enough aftermarket support it shouldn’t be an issue. I would just double check to be certain to make sure everything fits as it should. As far as the slave cylinder I don’t know if there is a major difference but again I opted to go with matching parts (I bought the clutch pack and slave as a package on rock auto) to make sure it wouldn’t have any issues. I would check the part numbers and if they are different I would change it out for the specified motor. As far as the tune you will need to do it yourself or get someone to do it to adjust for changes in idle and acceleration as well as the functions the engine preforms when it has an auto vs a manual trans. It’s pretty simple and lots of tutorials on RUclips.
I’ve got a 63 it’s a great tractor
Nice third pedal
I just bought a place with a ford 3000. It runs!
What loader does it take?
The Ford 2000 could be fitted with a Ford 730 loader.
I’ve got one, I love it!
when you need help with your landini, please mesage me, i have the same tractor
Hey man I just wrapped up my swap up . I got a 5.3 now with the nv3500 from the truck . Originally was a 4.3 v6 like yours I got a 2005 Silverado and an engine off a 2005 so the wiring would fit right but I can’t turn the truck on without jumping the start , did you run into this issue ? I was told a neutral safety switch or something like that

I had the same issue, I never did find out what it was yet. I just ran a wire with a push button switch to the starter. Not ideal but works as theft prevention. On a serious note however I would check the wiring diagrams, see if your getting a signal to the relay. I kinda ruled it out to be a BCM issue with the swap but I haven’t had a chance to look into it fully. It would be worth looking into the Silverado forums as lots of people have done these swaps, it will at least point you in a direction. I would check any safety switches as it could definitely be a factor. I know this isn’t really an answer but as I said I haven’t played with it since, sorry. Hope you find a way to solve it.
Is there a way you can show me how you ran your push button
What's the red wire run along your firewall and under your dash
Did u use the 5speed transmission from the V6 and just added a 4.8 clutch?
Yes, the bolt pattern on the bell housings from the small block and the LS platforms are the same (give or take an extra bolt) so everything bolts up fine. I used the V8 clutch it’s slave cylinder.
Noo never cut any wire. Dont take the fuse box out just move too the side.
I gutted all of the wiring for the V8 swap
Did you have to change air conditioning hoses ?
I did not hook up the AC yet, the compressors are different if I recall. I do know some of the hoses were different sizes between the two. But there is a 5 year difference between the two trucks. But the V8 and the V6 compressors are mounted differently so you would have to do some changes to the system to make sure everything fits right. Hope that helps.
I have a ‘66 2000 gas model with power steering and I love it. It was made to be fixed on the farm and I would not trade this for a modern plastic tractor that has so much electronics. It does what I need it to do
What’s the part number for the clutch kit
I don’t recall if I have it or not on hand but I can check. I just went on rock auto and ordered for the 4.8 and that’s all that was required.
How much horsepower does it have?
According to TractorData the diesel is 44hp w/ 31hp on the pto. Weight is around 5,000lbs. I'm going to go look at a 64 2000 diesel this week.
You can put a ball fitting on steering wheel similar to some forklifts. Alot easier & great for reversing. They have good hydrolic hose for tipping trailer/tools. Mine goes about 20mph which is faster than most that age 1966. 8 speed gear box. Built in Basildon, England.
Great video btw. I never imagined having to do so much on a truck that old JUST TO REMOVE THE FENDER . My guess, that design is what keeps dent pullers and bondo in business.
Don't let the junkyard win bring the old girl back to life
You can add a power steering kit to the 2000 i have added several of those kits over the years it's easy and really helps on turning it. The square hood fords was probably one of the best tractor's ever built and there are still a lot of them on the farms today
Had been a mechanic for a tractor company we never had any ford thousand (1000, 2000, 3000 etc) series come in for work, they are great tractors with very little issues ever..
We bought a new Ford 2000, with the Selecto-speed transmission, in 1965 (I think it was) and used it for raking hay and buzzsawing stove wood at the ranch in Montana until 2000 when we sold the place. It was super reliable, had power steering that gave it a tight turning radios, an lots of choices to help find the perfect gear for the job at hand.
If for sale I will take it!
Dad had a 1966 4000 3 cyl gas with a split grille like yours. Power steering worked great. Pulled 3-14s, 10 ft disc, hauled big round bales. Good old tractors and yeah I think they look great too!
