Bluebird Bridge - Good Lovin'
Written Rudy Clark and Arthur Resnick
Music Arrangement by Winthrop and Kathleen Chamberlain
In the 1970s when I was first exposed to the music of the Grateful Dead, they played the song “Good Lovin’” often. They sometimes would jam on “Good Lovin’” for long periods exploring the musical possibilities of the song during those 1970 shows and I loved it. According to SetList.fm The Grateful Dead played “Good Lovin’” 442 times over thirty years beginning at Magoo’s Pizza Parlor in May of 1965 and playing the song the last time in Auburn Hills, Michigan on June 28, 1995. Their rendition always got me up from my seat to dance. I have not sure when I first heard them play the song but I remember ...

    Reading the comments, just saw you did all of this in Blender. No joke, this is an incredible creation. Blender was the hardest program I ever tackled. I built a couple of Dead ringtone apps about 10 years ago for the same reasons you mentioned. I did everything in Blender. What great memories They should run this at the Sphere one night!

      Thanks for your kind remarks. I am retired so I took the time needed to learn how to use some of Blender's features. I have much more to learn. For example you can use Blender to map a video so that you can insert 3D objects into it. I need to learn that from some RUclips Blender Tutorial. Bobby says they are not capable of rendering video in the Sphere that has been animated with the band's audio in real time. I am not sure that is completely true if they were to use MIDI to animate. In The Grateful Dead Jerry had a MIDI pickup on his guitar and I think Bobby used a MIDI guitar too. But I don't know. I rendered this video in 1920 x 1080 pixels. It took 14 hours to render 6.5 minutes of music at 30 frames per second. The Sphere boasts 1.2 million pixels.

      Thanks so much for watching. "Bluebird Bridge" is the name of our two member husband and wife band. I chose this show because Dead.net posted the separate tracks of all the boys and Donna. I can use the audio of each of the tracks to animate in the video. It was a blast for me to create this and it's one of my favorites. I don't know why it didn't get as much attention as the music videos I made the same way from "Eyes of the World," "Mississippi Half Step," "Stella Blue" and "China Cat Sunflower." The jam is just incredible in this version of "Playing in the Band." Anyway, The Grateful Dead taught me about many realities and now I can try to create them and give something back at the same time. My only problem now is I have to think of the next surreal video.🐦

      I was there imbibing too. I finally finished school at 50 years old and many of the teachers I had, who were my age, understood that the Grateful Dead was a great band musically but the young students not so much. Twenty years later, there seems to be more interest from the young people. But, back in the day you even had to be careful what you said about them.🐦

      Yeah, the lyrics of this song takes that feeling you describe into one of deep solitude. "Stella Blue" always made me feel so alone without words to describe reality because words are just mere metaphors. And then, "when you hear that song..." I begin to feel connected again.🐦

    • @BluebirdBridge
      @BluebirdBridge 5 месяцев назад

      Good idea, I've thought about that for years. There is one big problem and that is latency. There will be a delay that jamming musicians cannot tolerate in the audio. As I understand it today, you have to be physically very close to the other musicians for the delay to be minimal. I watched a live stream of Wolf Bros concert from Bobby's Tri-Studios a year ago. The delay between the band and the audience was over 30 seconds. I have often thought about using MIDI instead of audio. Maybe, in the future when everyone has a fiber internet connection it will happen.🐦

      Thank you for your nice comment. I use the program called Blender at Blender.org that I have learned how to use over the past few years since I retired. There are thousands of Blender Tutorials on RUclips. From these tutorials I learned out how to animate the skeletons using Mixamo.com animations. I have also added some animations of my own. Blender allows an audio file to move or animate anything. You can animate the arms of the skeletons or the colors in the kaleidoscopes. Once I have the Blender file created it is rendered frame-by-frame which usually takes 12 hours to make the movie on my PC. Once these Blender files are created they can be added to and reused for other music. I also use Cakewalk Sonar for audio mixing. I learned how to use that a long time ago to make music with my wife. I really just wanted to make music videos of our music but then The Grateful Dead put out that "Separate Tracks" on Dead.net - www.dead.net/playingintheband so I used the tracks in the same way. Actually, the animations for our music are a little better because I have more detailed audio recordings and I have a MIDI track for the piano.🐦

    When I heard the my very first song played by Grateful Dead live at a concert at RFK Stadium in 1973 we did not need our tickets. There was a huge crowd and they were letting us all in slowly when a fan, already inside, opened a gate for us to enter. I thought it was just crazy so when the band began to play and I did not recognize the song’s sound from their albums, I thought one of these crazy yahoos had climbed up on stage and they were banging on the Dead’s instruments. But then, this wonderful sound began to emerge and I realized it was in fact The Grateful Dead. I had already learned to play guitar a little and I was playing folk tunes and the like on it. This was my first exposure to improvised music and right then and there I decided I wanted to play like that. This was no light inspiration. This was what I wanted to do with my life. It was that bolt of lightning in the Grateful Dead Stealie that occurred right inside my head. I realized that this band sounds completely different at different times and I became a Dead Head. 🐦 Here is a different version of these two songs my wife and I heard at The Philadelphia Civic Center later on down the road. The Dead played through the Wall of Sound PA at this show. Philadelphia Civic Center - Philadelphia, PA 08/05/1974 Soundboard archive.org/details/gd1974-08-05.151039.sbd.eaton-miller.flac1644

      Thank you! We had some snow down here too but not as much as in NJ and NY. I love Eyes of the World too. In fact we just recorded our version in space and put it here - ruclips.net/video/OjSFy4q1sn8/видео.html. This isn't AI. Don't get me started on an AI rant. As Michio Kaku says, "AI is nothing but playback from a tape recorder." I used a free program called Blender - www.blender.org/. It's 3D software that allows you to animate. I have been learning how to use it in retirement for the last couple of years. Blender is math heavy though. I use a sine wave to animate the bending of the wings for example. Blender handles all the math needed for the cloth dress and the hair. This video took 13 hours to render on my PC. The audio from the separate tracks on Dead.net - www.dead.net/playingintheband is used to animate the lower jaws of the singers and the hands of the musicians. The rugs are kaleidoscopes that are simple to make and the audio changes the shapes as the kaleidoscope rotates. The Dead used something similar on the big screens behind the stage at their concerts in the 90's.

      I agree wholeheartedly! The first time I played it on the guitar myself it sounded so good. It's a song that just draws you into it's sonic beauty. But, those lyrics, they pull you in further and your left unable to do anything. You just dream.

      Thank you very much. I made them in Blender. I first created a 12 segmented UV sphere. I structured the UV map of the texture that colors the object in a triangle so that when the texture is rotated in makes a kaleidoscope. Then I used a Wave modifier to make the stars ripple. I saw kaleidoscope music videos on RUclips a couple of years ago and I just had to figure out how to make them using Blender. The Grateful Dead used to put up colorful displays with kaleidoscopes back in the 1980's and 1990' at their concerts on a big screen behind the stage. It was ahead of the times then.

    Mr Robert Hunter my friend

    • @BluebirdBridge
      @BluebirdBridge 7 месяцев назад

      I have long wished I could write a lyric like Robert Hunter. He is the best. He can draw you into a song, twist and turn it so you have no idea what he meant and then leave the you feeling as if some grand wisdom was imparted. That wisdom is given many times over and can be of a different nature upon listening to (or singing) that same song again and again. 🐦

    Lyrics not written by Garcia

    • @BluebirdBridge
      @BluebirdBridge 7 месяцев назад

      I thought that typing the credits that way would imply that Jerry Garcia wrote the music and Robert Hunter the lyrics. Although, I always heard that it was a collaboration. Sometimes, I have read, that Robert Hunter had music and lyrics to a song already written and Jerry added more to the music.

      No, the video was created using Blender. The keyboard player and guitar players hands were animated with the audio from the separate tracks posted on Dead.net. There is a "Bake Sound to f-curve" feature in Blender that can move any 3D object. The violin players bow swings back and forth with a sine wave and then the audio track of Vassar Clements is added to the movement. AI uses heuristics which generally use Bayesian probability calculations.

    • @BluebirdBridge
      @BluebirdBridge 7 месяцев назад

      I am not sure what you mean by "vox." I did remix everything from the separate tracks on Dead.net (www.dead.net/playingintheband). I mixed in using Sonar which is now distributed free by Bandlab. My mix uses some compression on the vocals but no other effects. I always make a 5.1 surround version mixed with Sonar which can be found at this link on Archive.org - archive.org/details/surround-music-videos-with-music-from-the-grateful-dead . @@timothyryan6018

      I noticed all movements were in sync to the audio too. That would have been a nightmare to hand keyframe everything in something like Poser. But the audio speech function in that program is similar to how you did it using waveforms. I've also used a home brew motion capture system using 2 Xbox 360 Kenect sensors with some success, but it doesn't track hands.

    I was about to publish the finished music video on the web when a network switch locked up my whole network. I took me two days to troubleshoot and reconnect to the internet. During that time I experienced what I would call synchronicity. While my network was down my wife and I discussed the fact that Donna Jean Godchaux had provided vocals to “Stella Blue” in 1973 but she was not included in my video. Had the network switch not failed I may have left her out. My wife and I saw her sing with the Zen Tricksters in 2007 in a small idyllic setting on the Potomac River just down river from where we water skied for years. We danced with her that night and shared life. I am so glad that switch failed when it did because it looks so cool in this video.
