      Yeh its a strange one, doesn't seem to get covered often. One of the hardest tunes for me to get sounding close to the OG because of the 2 weird-ass sound effects in it; the one in the left ear thats like a group-shout or chant, and the one in the right ear that's a sort of metallic 'clunk'. Took me ages to get those sounding vaguely similar to the OG, think they're really important for this track to sound 'correct'

    Grreat video Josh. In your opinion is Addictive Drums good enough to use in a proper song? I'm debating what plugin to use to substitute live drums as hiring session drummers for each song is quite expensive. What do you think?

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 9 дней назад

      Yeah I definitely think you can, I personally used AD2 for all the drums on this album for the same budgetary reason! ruclips.net/video/3dpPJ0ngLic/видео.html Personally I think they're pretty convincing, I would usually prefer to record a real drummer but in this case I was really happy with the sound of AD2, considering it cost me a fraction of the price of recording a full album's worth of real drums in a studio. But I guess its not really for me to say how convincing they are, that's up to listeners to decide :)

    I tarted trying to do this on ableton but even with the same model as you M1 Pro MacBook Pro with buffer at 32 samples, the latency was still too bothersome for me. And acoustic finger style guitar is the main core of my sound so I just couldn't deal with it. I don't know if there's any other tricks I could have pulled. So in the end I used the UAD Apollo to get a few zero latency effects where I really needed them, then used Ableton for reverbs, delays and granulation effects. Things that don't mind having a small amount of latency. That has worked pretty well for me. I use the Morningstar MC8 to turn on and off all the ableton effects. Thanks for the video, interesting to see your setup.

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 19 дней назад

      Sorry to hear that, I also play fingerstyle acoustic through the same setup sometimes! There's a degree of latency doing things this way, so I think it's a trade-off with the creative advantages available by having the signal in Ableton, at the slight cost of timing-responsiveness. But there's some tricks or things I can point out to try & help mitigate this, 1- Certain types of FX or plugins introduce a lot of latency to your session, even if they aren't on your guitar track. Pitch-shifting plugins and limiters for example, or things possibly on Master/Stereo Out channel can add latency to your guitar input. 2- Ableton has tools to deal with this, in Audio Preferences it'll tell you in miliseconds how much latency is in your session and you can counter-act this by delaying your input signals to balance out the latency -- for example, if there's 50ms latency overall, you can use the Track Delay feature or the Input Latency adjustments to delay your guitar signal by -50ms, getting you close* to 0. 3 - I say close* cos certain plugins, no matter what, if they're active in your session they permanently add a feeling of latency that you can't get around, even at super-low buffers like 32 where you shouldn't really be able to feel it. Worth checking the latency of your non-UAD FX or processes elsewhere in the setup to see if there's something interfering.

    This is giving me ideas. I suppose you could bounce dry tracks and have some of the original VST controls to automate live. Thanks Josh!

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman Месяц назад

      Nice! Yeah for sure. Sometimes you might want to run a synth/VST plugin from your original track actually live in real-time, so you could do that by grabbing the MIDI from your original project and putting it into Ableton as a clip like this, and load the VST so you can tweak the sound of something live by changing parameters within a synth plugin, for example. I've avoided that here and only used Audio tracks with a couple FX on them to keep the CPU cost as low as possible; some VST synths are very CPU-hungry and I wanted this method to work for anyone without needing a powerful machine, but if you can its fun to experiment with!

    1 could this perhaps be due to ableton clips sticking to full bars while the pedals recording length is slightly longer or shorter? i mean i have this happen a lot when i use recordings because i hit the space bar (stop rec) too late or too early in the clip for them to match. its starting a 3 second clip and a 3.1 second clip lets say so as soon as it repeats the first one 0.1 secs before the other, they drift apart (cumulatively) by that amount each time the first one finishes?

    • @joshtrinnaman

      Apologies if I'm missing something or I've misunderstood you, but this entire video is about how to avoid your loops drifting out of time and how to keep everything locked together 😁check out the section on Automating the Looper if you haven't already, that'll solve your issue pal :) It sounds like you're trying to loop by recording directly into Clips in the Session View, instead of using the Looper? It is possible to use the Clips method but it takes some more setting up to avoid the issue you're having; the Looper device simplifies things a bit.

    Hey Josh great Video! I really love AD2. But i usually pur it in multitrack mode. This way you have everything in seperate tracks in your daw Mixer and you can mix it like live tracked drums. Another upside is you can mix every „mic“ with your fav plugins and dont have to stick to the internal Mixer of ad2. What do you think about the multi workflow compared to the Stereo/Internal? Greetings from Germany! Youre awesome :)

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 3 месяца назад

      Thank you! Yeah for a final mixdown I would usually use AD2 in multi-out mode too. I haven’t covered that feature here as it feels like a more advanced part of AD2, and I didn’t want to overwhelm people maybe just starting out with it. Maybe I’ll make a vid on multi-out mode at some point :) Stereo/internal is fine for writing or coming up with an idea or general kit sound, but yeah if you get more seriously into using ad2 or doing a professional song mix that uses it, multi-out mode becomes necessary, I think.

So I have a vid out called 'Using Ableton as Perfect Loop Pedal' which pretty much covers what you've asked :) can check it here if you're curious ruclips.net/video/nrsM_yIA3KI/видео.html - in this vid I'm using a guitar just to demonstrate how it works, but you could use the same method in Ableton for as many instruments you could plug in to your audio interface or mic up, also applies to software instruments on a midi keyboard etc. Also if you're not familiar, check out this artist Binkbeats, as he's pretty much mastered the concept of live looping multiple different instruments in a setup. Goes way beyond what I'm doing with setups ruclips.net/video/Ya9VaE7dE6E/видео.html

    Wicked. I love working in that way with nonsense collages. You end up with so much stuff you could never make on purpose.

    Hey, I'm glad I stumbled on your channel. You are in that strange niche of music that I'm into (where electronic meets "real" recorded music). I'm just curious as to why you don't work solely in Ableton. It's a great DAW. I also have been messing about in Bitwig a bit. Subbed and looking forward to whatever else you have to offer in the future. Cheers, Josh!

      Oo that's a whole can of worms question, a lot to say on that but I'll try to explain it briefly as possible, Logic's the first DAW I learned, so its my main one for that reason. But it can't really be used for live performance, so I got Ableton to play my tracks live and just for that purpose initially. Over time really got into its built-in FX and some creative workflows in it, so now incorporate them into my process. Having used both DAWs for over 10+ years now, for me each has their strengths and weaknesses for different tasks, genres or situations, and there's some small little things in each app where they outdo one another, IMO. I could probs do a whole vid on this as there's quite a few niche things i could compare there, It's a generalisation as both DAWs could be used to make any style of music, but I would also say Ableton feels more comfortable to make electronic music in, and feels geared to that. Logic feels geared more towards recording bands, writing or arranging 'real' music like you mentioned so more like bands, rock, jazz, that sort of thing. So combining the use of both has made sense to someone like me who's into combining electronic & organic styles of music. I trialled Bitwig ages ago and it seemed like Logic & Ableton combined together in 1 app and more. It's really cool, if I wasn't already used to my workflow I'd probably have got into it more!

      @@joshtrinnaman I totally get it. Back in 2007 when I started getting into audio production, I used to use Cubase. I kinda gave up around 2010, and returned to producing around 2015, I got into Ableton. Radiohead's Kid A was the album that blew my perceptual doors open as to the boundaries between avant grade rock music and electronic music. I'm pretty sure Thom Yorke uses Ableton to script his ideas for Radiohead and also his solo work and Atoms for Peace. Anyway, it's always nice to see creators using guitars and analog equipment with Ableton. PS - I still think Bitwig has the possibility to be the future. I just love Ableton's Glue Compressor, Drum Buss and capture MIDI function.

      are you using AD2 in its multi-output mode? If thats the case try experimenting with the pre-fader or post-fader options. If the Kick for example is set to 'pre-fader' then that should come out of its own audio channel as the Close Mic only and then you adjust its level or apply FX on an audio channel in your DAW, rather than in AD2.

    Great video, I learned a lot! I have Fairfax vol. 1&2 and Black Velvet. Is there any way to dry up the ride cymbals so I get more ping and less wash and sustain? Thanks

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 4 месяца назад

      Oo niche ask. You could try filtering out a fair bit of the low-end of the ride with the EQ, maybe up to like 1200hz so its mostly just the click of the stick attack and less of the ride's body. And then change the envelope so there's less sustain & release. Maybe add some distortion after that to warm it back up again. There's also the Response control, which I think you can set somehow to only trigger the bell sample of the ride IIRC, rather than the edges etc so you get a bit of a clickier and drier sound more consistently 🏜

    cactuar collective launchpad drumkit.... have you got that for sale with all your smaples included?

      I wouldn't sell that as it's just FF sound effects I've put on a drum rack in Ableton, very simple to do. You can easily download the sounds and create one yourself here www.sounds-resource.com/pc_computer/finalfantasyvii/sound/807/

    If you don’t use overheads at all, your crash and ride cymbals can vanish. Personally i don’t mind the overheads (the room is indeed in need of muting). I always use convolution reverb with a real studio IR.

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 4 месяца назад

      Yeah that's true, for clarity that'd only happen if you turned down the OHs or Room bus faders in the bottom right of the UI, or if you went through every cymbal track and individually tuned off the room + OH send for each cymbal. I'm sure you already know but for anyone else reading who doesn't, cymbals in AD have no close mics and can only route out of OHs or Room, so if you turn those off, you won't be able to hear any cymbals. I find it best to leave OHs and Room faders at unity and instead control what's being sent to those busses, using the send controls on each kit piece. Enables having the cymbals still in the OHs, with all the kick/snare/toms/hats as just the close-mics, gets you the best of both. What reverb do you use? There's some good tricks for that using AD in multi-output mode!

      @@joshtrinnaman Can I move the kick, snare and toms out of rooms and OHs to export them dry separately while also export the rooms and OHs with all of them in there? To emulate the recording session as close as possible? Or do you have any other advice? Thanks! 🎉

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 2 месяца назад

      @@alenvlajnic8076 Yeah that should be possible, you'd have to bounce everything out of AD2 to audio files though! There might be a cleverer way to do this with AD2 in Multi-Output mode, but here's how I'd do what you asked off the top of my head: Remove all OH & ROOM sends from the kick, snare and toms. Solo each one at a time, bounce em out so youve got them dry. Then send them all back to the OHs bus at the level you want, then Solo the Overhead Bus and bounce that out. Boom

    • @alenvlajnic8076
      @alenvlajnic8076 2 месяца назад

      @@joshtrinnaman I did some research last night, and it seems as AD2 bounces dry elements when multioutput (kick, snare, toms) while you choose how much of each element you want in the rooms and OHs cause you get those as unique channels also. I have to check it out in the studio tho. Other logical solution is definitely the one you just wrote.

    • @joshtrinnaman
      @joshtrinnaman 2 месяца назад

      @@alenvlajnic8076 That's correct yeah, you can get the raw drum samples out of AD2 by setting the Multi-Output mode of their tracks to 'Pre-Fader', this'll bypass all the FX chains/envelope shaping and all that stuff in AD2 to put things on their own mono audio tracks - although a heads up that this can dramatically change or kill the sound of your preset if you made it first in Stereo mode using any of the internal AD2 FX, envelope shaping and so on, as it'll ignore all of your internal levels settings. I've seen this confuses some first-time multioutput AD2 users. Can be worth experimenting with setting some tracks as 'Post-Fader' if you're converting it from a Stereo preset, so things don't sound totally different. Or just don't use Stereo mode at all and simply start building your preset as a Multi-Out one from the getgo, so you don't have to deal with any potential headaches down the line :)
